Evaluation Observations:
Tom seems to pride himself on intimidation and likes to throw his weight around when it comes to his interactions with his fellow doctors and staff, particularly those who are below him on the totem pole. Arrogance and bluntness are his two main dispositions. Some perceive this as a way of reminding others of his roots – a respected member of John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore – and that he was less than enthused about making the move out to the west coast to take his current position; a grudge he still holds several years later. This behavior has also earned him a reputation for being a bit of a curmudgeon, something he likes to joke about, or even exploit, depending on the situation.
While some of this attitude shows through when dealing with his patients and students, he tends to be more forgiving in this area, particularly when it comes to the women. He can easily throw on the charm and flirt with the best of them, putting his patients at ease. Perhaps this is why many women still request him even as he’s approaching retirement.
Actual Personality:
Even to his closest friends, Tom is the same as his public persona; he’s not one to hide his pride. He also tends to associate with like-minded people – all very sure of themselves and quick to flaunt their accolades. Sometimes it’s nice to live in an echo chamber. His home life is a bit strained, but after 41 years of marriage to his wife, Beth, they have simply learned to roll with the punches. They may have lost some of their previous passion for each other, but they by no means hate each other. Their three children, along with the grandchildren, have helped to keep the peace.
Of course, there are also rumors running rampant among certain circles of Tom’s illicit activity with women, particularly when he was younger. While Beth is oblivious, their eldest daughter seems to suspect that an affair is/was the true cause of the lull in their marriage. No one has been able to prove it for sure, but sometimes you can hear quiet whispers within the halls of the hospital where he works.
My Dreams Tom has reached the point in his life where dreams are no longer pertinent; he has accepted the fact that if he hasn’t realized his dreams by now, they will probably remain out of reach. While retirement has become a topic of interest at home with his wife, he remains adamant about taking the plunge.
