Superhumans have existed throughout history, usually being seen as mythological beings. Gods, angels, demons, or other such things were, in the view of modern historians, just superhumans which the people of the past didn't understand. They believe that the reason pantheons of deities tended to be family trees is that superhumans would work together to rule over past societies, but their decedents wouldn't always get powers, leading to the pantheons losing their power within a few hundred years.

Modern gene mapping revealed three separate "Catalyst" genes, called that because they trigger alterations in the human body. The Energetic variation alters the metabolism of a person's body, allowing them to utilize, store, or control different forms of energy. The Mental Variation effects the brain and sometimes the nervous system, altering perceptions and granting psionic abilities. The Physical Variation can cause changes to most of the human body, altering appearance, giving people enhanced muscles, and the like. It can cause the most varied changes of the three. A person can have any combination of the three or all three, and multiple copies of the same gene will only make them stronger. A parent with an active gene has a 50% chance of passing it to their child, and often it becomes inactive when passed.

While best estimates of past human genetics show that the rate of Catalyst genes within the human population hasn't increased drastically in the last century, the appearance of large numbers of superhumans began in the 1930s. Scientists believe that the activation of the gene requires high amounts of stress or a near-death experience, and that the gene responds by adapting the person in a way that negates some of all of the stress. A person that is trapped in a burning building, for example, may adapt to be able to breath in reduced oxygen environments, be less effected by smoke, become resistant to heat, or even develop the ability to manipulate the flames depending on their version of the gene. These events activated the catalyst genes far less frequently before the 1930s, though, which baffles scientists studying the phenomenon.

Roughly one in one hundred people have a Catalyst gene, roughly one in ten thousand have two different catalyst genes, and roughly one in a million have all three. Only about one percent of people with a gene have an active form, however, meaning that there are roughly 80 million superhumans on Earth. They are common enough for everyone to have met at least one, even in small towns, though rare enough that their skills are in demand.

The existence of superhumans has accelerated the development of technology as well. Energy weapons, advanced materials, force fields, and advanced spacecraft exist, though humans haven't figured out how to travel faster than light yet.

Possible plots for this world: (Suggest something else if you have another idea that could work)

Alien invasion
We are arrested for crimes, false or real, and sent to a prison colony. We band together to survive the other inmates.
Abducted by aliens, sent to hostile planet, need to survive and defeat them to get back.
We are hired for some kind of job (depends on the characters).

Wow. This also looks like a lot of fun!
Kind of reminds of my Hero Academia, but without the school central themes

Sounds like a great muck about roleplay.

What would the themes be? Would it be a dark roleplay or light-hearted like how many superheros and comics are? How would applications work with regards to the three genes/genomes? would applicants have three points to spend on areas but could invest in the same power which would increase it's "power" instead of producing three different powers?

@pokemad1I haven't really decided on a theme. I want something realistic, but not too goofy. Other than that I'm not sure. Kind of depends on which story I go with.

As far as characters are concerned, that sounds like a good way to balance them. Maybe you get a bonus gene if you weren't born with powers, as you would be stronger but have less practice that way.

@TheUnknowable
Though this gives people a large opportunity to have all three - unless you set some sort of reasoning as to why they may wish to choose fewer over more (as in describe the strength of each different power depending on the number of points within the ability). Maybe include the limits of each level of a power; for example a mental gene with only 1 point invested could only affect the user or perhaps someone they are touching, 2 points would allow for range use as well as the ability to move objects or inflict an amount of damage whilst 3 points allows for all concealable range of mental powers thinkable. If you do this then you may want to include a form of monitored improvement to skills, else some people may wish to begin as a Master Psychic, able to melt minds in seconds... or maybe have skill points that are separate..?

Another way could be "archetypes" where some may grant extra points along with other pros but greater cons and disadvantages...

Though that's only an idea to fix the problem of OPness, it is also quite inefficient itself...

For the special genes? I think that maybe a good way to do it would be to have people with fewer of the gene types have stronger brute force abilities while those with more genes have weaker, but more complex abilities.

@jynmi88no, I meant of the possible plots. That way I can write it up for the first post of the ooc.

This seems really fun, interested! :) I like the hired for some kind of job idea for the plot, maybe by someone whose motives are less than 100% what they seem to be - perhaps to try and study superhumans in action to develope more tech/sciencey stuff/prove some kind of point about superhumans (maybe they don't like how superhumans' skills are so in-demand and want to use our characters to show superhumans aren't that great after all) and then our characters have to figure out what's really going on? Just throwing sround ideas :)

What about they're mandated to serve on police forces or military with a faction of superhumans who don't want to follow that mandate.

@Fleet Admiral@2plus2isnot5I was never really a fan of the idea of mandated military service, but we could do something like that.

What if we were private investigators or private security. We could be hired by a man that was attacked by superhumans, but he doesn't want the cops to handle it because he has been exploiting people with powers to try and reverse engineer their abilities. Maybe he's blackmailed them, has actually trafficked in super humans from third world countries, or gets them in debt to a bookie/hooked on drugs so that he can force them to submit to unsafe research conditions?

I do like the idea of private investigators, more than private security, but either could work for me.

@TheUnknowable I like that idea, maybe he's even blackmailing the head of the company our characters are working for, and they slowly uncover the increasing sketchy-ness of the whole thing?

Edit: I also prefer the idea of PIs to security

In that case, I guess I'll recycle an idea from another RP and recreate "Phoenix Security", an Investigation/Security service which specializes in supervillains.

With all of the interest so far, I went ahead and made an OOC for this RP.
