Anyway onto the Idea
We are taught from a young age that magic, monsters, and all other sorts of things which go bump in the night, are not real. We learn to accept this as truth despite our sense trying to tell us otherwise. That feeling of fear that creeps up your spine when you walk through a dark room alone, The sense that someone is watching you when you are alone, or even that vague sense of Deja Vu when meeting someone for the first time- all proof of something more to the world than meets the eye.
The fact is lost monsters of legend and creatures of the night do exist but by the time we become adults we have learned to ignore everything that does make 'rational sense' to our minds. This is called the veil effect. The Veil protects humans, keeping them from trouble more often than not, but also allows monsters to hide in plain site.
There are a few humans can see through this veil and understand the world as it truly is. Some of these humans are those who can call upon the Aether, often called Witches, Warlocks, Wizards, Sages, Psychics or any other number of titles given throughout the age, they themselves can use the energies of the universe and the veil to do amazing abilities, although risk becoming monsters themselves. Others who are born with the capability of seeing through the veil are called Hunters.
Hunters are born with enhanced physical abilities. Able to run faster, jump higher, and fight longer than average humans, Hunters are the apex of humanity, and more often than not their guardians. Hunters learn to fight the various creatures of the night in order to protect their fellow man from the dangers they can not understand.
Humanity has long feared the darkness. From the earliest days of Man, we have worked on ways to push back the night. From the cave man's early discovery of fire, the burning of gas lights to fill our homes and streets with light, all the way up to the more modern light bulb and electronic devices which help guide us through the dark nights, we have always found a way to help ourselves out of the dark and into the light because in truth, even with the veil in place, our subconscious minds are very much aware of the horrors which go on around us.
Our cunning inventive nature is not the only way in which we have learned to fight away the creeping darkness, nature has provided mankind with an additional means of doing so, by giving us Hunters.
Hunters, or Apex Humans as they should more accurately be called, have been born into this world for as long as Humanity has existed. These alpha beings who have increased strength, endurance, agility, and perception are what have allowed humans to prevail against foes which are not only physically outmatch them, but also remain completely invisible to them.
Hunters are born as regular humans, there abilities and true nature not becoming obvious to them until the middle stages of puberty, usually around the age of 15 or 16. The incredible traits a Hunter possesses is passed down family lines but usually missing a generation or two, meaning a male hunter is unlikely to pass his traits to his son, but his grandson or great grandson may possess the trait. The traits of a hunter are usually only found once within a generation of a family, usually the eldest child (but not always). Even those who possess the traits may not always develop them fully. Some only have one or two abilities and may not even be able to see through the veil at all. These individuals are often called 'gifted'.
In addition to their increased physical abilities and the ability to see through the veil which stands between mankind and the beasts which walk among them, Hunters find themselves resistant to much of the abilities most creatures possess. A werewolf can not make a Hunter into a werewolf, nor can a vampire change a hunter into one of their undead minions or take control over their mind, although both creatures are still capable of ending their life, all be it a bit tougher than killing a regular human. Even the rare humans which learn to call upon magics and see through the veil through pacts with other worldly beings or study of ancient arts find it difficult to sway a Hunters mind with magic. Hunters are still subject to trickery, however, and can be made susceptible to some of the more potent magics if tricked into letting their guards down.
The Knights of Humanitas
An order which was founded in the dark ages of European history, the Knights of Humanitas have long acted as guardians over humanity. They take it upon themselves to take in these young Hunters and help guide them as they learn their abilities, and teach them how to fight the beasts hidden in the darkness. Some gifted are brought into the fold as well, but usually they are left in the dark instead, for their own safety.
Long ago these Knights were funded by the catholic church, using their funds to help raise these children into the brave warriors against monsters, and in turn, these knights would help in the churches holy wars. It became clear to the council which rules over the Knights they needed to distance themselves from the church and any other nation less they become tools of war rather than the protectors they set out to be. That is when the Knights went into hiding, raising funds in secret and acting outside of the laws of any government or agency which could use them for evil. Despite cutting their ties with the church, The Knights retained their religious roots, often dawning crosses or other religious ornaments, some knights believing they are truly soldiers of god (although this view has never been accepted by the Council).
In truth, in the early 19th century the Knights were the strongest they had ever been. Thousands of members, acting all across the globe helping to thin the monster hordes, it seemed Humanity might even be able to erase the need for Hunters altogether. It was at the dawn of the 20th century something changed. The birth rates of Hunters suddenly dropped. Families which had produced Hunters every other generation suddenly found themselves with new hunters being born only once every three generations, some not at all.
Fast forward to the present day, Hunters have become rare. What had once been 1 in every 100 thousand humans being born Hunters or at least 'gifted' has seemingly decreased to becoming 1 in ever ten million, by far most of which are only 'gifted'. The Knights have only several hundred in their ranks now, so their ability to help others has grown thin.
The idea gives the world, but if you want to add onto it and such just let me know don’t be afraid to give your ideas and such. I am a very flexible rp partner nothing has to be set in stone yet, this has just been sitting in my notes and I felt like it needed to get out before it got forgotten again.
