Millu'ci'vanda

Blinks a couple times before I answer. "I'm... okay. I've been better, I think." I squeeze my eyes tightly closed again, and set my jaw in concentration. "Sorry. Being separated from the hive... It feels like I'm drifting through a vacuum. What is it you wanted to talk to me about?" That buzzing from before comes back for a moment, then disappears again. I repeatedly close my fists, then relax them.

"If I'm honest? If you'd come back, if you'd leave the hive. Luci..." I hesitate, then continue. "What about Koraline? I know nothing I say about what Becca and Jakito told us about when you fell into that river will convince you, but what about her?"

"K... Koraline?" Fidgets uncomfortably. "Koraline, she... she's likely moved on. What happened between us..." Crosses then uncrosses legs, then crosses them again. "It was a fling. She never... I mean, she isn't the type to catch feelings." I give Jerus a pained look, though it is unclear if the pain is from the memory of Koraline or simply the discomfort suppressing Oroboro. "She's moved on by now, I'm sure. I mean... she must have... hasn't she? I mean..." fidgets more, and again the quiet buzzing flairs up. A small insect about the size of a carpenter ant crawls out from the sleeve of my coat and rests on the back of my left hand. It chirps its wings rhythmically, but I ignore it as I timidly ask, "Does... does Koraline still talk about me?"

"She was last I saw her, and that was shortly after Hunter's funeral." I facepalm as I remember she hadn't been told. "And there's also that. We...we found out Jorg Sucal is still alive. Hunter tried to go toe to toe with a man who turned out to be a powerful Sith Lord and...he didn't survive the encounter." I left out our suspicions about the mind rod since we didn't know for sure yet.

My eyes widen. "Wait, what!? Hunter dead... Sucal alive again..." Overwhelmed, I grab at my head. The bug on my hand flies off and begins to circle me, buzzing loudly. "Gods, I've missed so much! How did all of this happen so fast?" Another insect crawls out from the collar of my shirt and takes flight, then another buzzes out from my coat pocket.

My eyes return to Jerus. "And Koraline... What did she say? Did she...AH!" I grit my teeth in pain. The small swarm of insects wreathing my head chirp loudly in my ears like angry wasps. In response, I murmur quiet words Jerus can not entirely hear. ".... I am sorry...... memories..... past life...... peace..... brought me to...... I don't...... the hive...... I understand...... return to safety...."

I see what's happening and realize that she's starting to free herself. Having no love for the Kiliks, I push forwards. "She said she missed you, that she wished she could have had one more chance to see you. Luci, we need you. No one else will be able to focus if you don't at least try."

I dig my fingers into my eyes, massaging the lids and causing me to see white blotches. The buzzing insects are speaking to me; calling me back to the hive. Part of me wants to swat them away, but their noises are starting to sound like a beautiful song. One I want to listen to. One that promises to take me away from the awfulness I have awakened to, and bring me back to peace. Over the cacophony of sound in my head, I say out loud, "Koraline... I...I want..." I pause, and my nostril twitches. A smell has risen in the air; a very sweet, pleasant smell. In fact... it is the most pleasant smell I have ever experienced. I can not resist inhaling as the insects around my head change their tone, landing on my shoulders and face to chirp quietly.

The expression on our face begins to slip, and the next time we speak, it is in a monotone. "We want to stay with the kind. Oroboro is our new home. Koraline has already mourned Millu'ci'vanda. Giving her false hope that we may ever be the person we once were..." Our head twitches suddenly, and we pause in anticipation of something happen. When nothing does, we conclude, "It would be unhealthy for all parties involved."

"Alright you damned dirty bugs. You're going to let her go, or I'm going to rain fire and death on every one of Oroboro's nests I can find. Remember the damage I inflicted last time just in my own grief? I'm sure that still haunts your collective memories."

The Killik Fingerlings on our shoulder buzz aggressively. "Please, do not threaten the hive. They mean you no ill will, and are willing to make an exchange, if you desire." The insects calm themselves and allow us to negotiate. "If you allow Oroboro to keep us as a joiner, they will share with you a secret. One they believe will help you greatly against your enemy."

I narrow my eyes at Luci. "Let's hear it, then I'll decide if those details are worth the life of someone who we care so much about."

Blinks at Jerus for several seconds. "Our collective memory goes back far. Once, many queens ago, the Kind served another, greater power called..." Tilts head, listening to the voice of the hive. "The Builders. Under their oversight, many nests were tasked with preforming great labors. We worked tirelessly in their service in order to build five great constructs. Factories of limitless potential, devices capable of terragenesis on a massive scale. Even a device capable of enhancing the Force to a near unimaginable scale." We pause, waiting for the hive to make it's offer. "The Kind were among thousands of races to be brought under the lash of the Builders... but we alone have the capacity to remember. Allow us to keep this one you once called Millu'ci'vanda, and we will share the location of these five great constructs with you and your people."

"What's your investment in keeping Luci bugs? While you're not keen on the idea, you've released them before. Besides, how do I know this isn't a trick?" I lean against the wall behind me, crossing my arms. "Be real easy for you to give me coordinates that would drop me right in the middle of a black hole."

"That would be untruthful of us." We say plainly. "We have no cause to harm you at this time. Our offer is genuine. The exchange is weighted heavily in your favor. One member of our nest in exchange or five powerful pieces of machinery..." We pause, listening to the voices again. "Or perhaps only four. Some among the nest report rumors of the shipyard construct known as the Star Forge being destroyed three-hundred and thirty give standard years ago. None among the nest were present for this. We are regrettably unable to confirm. However, the offer stands for the remaining four; those being the battle machine factory known as the Foundry, the terraforming construct known as the Garden, the xenoforming construct known as the Genesis Engine, and the celestial modification construct known as the Tempest Eye. All of these ancient devices shall be yours to command. In return, you do not remove this one member of our hive."

At the mention of the Tempest Eye, I bite back my retort. A solid, real location on the Tempest Eye...not to mention two or three others we could secure to keep away from any one else... This was almost too good to be true, but Luci was the price and I wasn't sure it was my place to gamble that away. "And you've not shared that information with anyone else?"

"No one has ever asked. The nobles of Alderaan see us as vermin at best, a threat to be exterminated at the worst." The insects on our face and shoulders begin to return to their solitude, hiding among the folds of our clothing or in our hair. "Other nests exist beyond Alderaan. Many of the Kind took to the stars long ago. They too once served the Builders, and likewise may remember the constructs of power. Where they now dwell and whom they make ally of is beyond our knowledge."

The implications of having the knowledge was massive, and I saw too many tactical reasons to not accept this, but Luci's life..."Let me think on it, speak with some of the others. Get in touch with...the woman who loved her, see what she wants to do. I'll let you know by the time we reach Alderaan."

"Very well. Now, if you will excuse us, Jerus Je'and..." We do not finish that statement. We simple sit still, all the energy in our body seemingly disappearing as we enter our own heads, listing to the collective thoughts of Oroboro speaking through a thousand voices at once.

MEANWHILE ON DANTOOINE

Republic starfighters streak across the sky, disrupting the normally calm plains with constant noise. Farmers look up at the ships as they pass by, wondering what is going on. All they have been told is that there are fugitives at large, and that for the time being, Dantooine is under quarantine. Inside the starfighters above, pilots preform scans of the planet's surface, trying to locate any sign of a hidden rebel base. So far, no luck.

In cities and towns across the planet, Republic troopers march. They carry their weapons openly, and aren't afraid to show them off to anyone they persevere as uncooperative or suspicious. The leaders of each squad carries a holo display, cycling through 3D images of the fugitives. They have also installed holographic Wanted posters outside heavy trafficked areas such as spaceports and bars. There is a substantial reward for anyone with information on where to find the legendary Twilight Compound.

In space, more capital ships have arrived to join the blockade. It is soon made clear to all nearby systems that the Republic is no longer taking any chances. Unless the Sith Hunters give themselves up, life on Dantooine is about to become increasingly more difficult for everyone...

Back on Alderaan

Zar'kun Je'and

The trio of escaped ships had arrived in orbit over their destination and would soon begin the descent to land, but I was deeply troubled by the communication that my son had given me during the trip over. The killiks of Oroborro were willing to give them the locations of some of the most powerful weapons in existence, in exchange for a woman who was as much family to myself and my former Padawan as the blood relatives we had.

I knew Jerus well enough to know he would have accepted the offer outright if the decision were exclusively his. He would never admit it, but the sun charm that hung from his belt wasn't just for decoration, it had belonged to someone he'd met long before he married Synclair Twilight, someone who's memory he couldn't shake, and was the greatest reason he had no love for the bug people. Since I'd heard the tale behind his hate of the bugs during the war, I knew anything that had to do with them would be handled coldly and logically by him.

And so I meditated in the crew common area, where Iwan could find me if he needed something, as I reached out to the Force for aid from an old friend and my old master, Sevard Salcar. Rare was the time he would answer, but now, I needed him more than I had before, for a number of reasons.

Sevard Salcar

After a long stretch of silence, a disembodied voice speaks to Zar’kun. “It has been a long time, my old friend.” A moment later, a semitransparent man appears, glowing a soft blue. Almost dreamlike, his appearance is not entirely consistent. Somehow, he appears both as a middle aged man with thinning gray hair, while also as a young man with a full head of brown hair. “I have been watching you all for some time. It seems that once again, the Galaxy is plunged into mortal peril, and the Sith Hunters are the o of ones capable of saving it.” Sevard smiles warmly.
