The year was 1473. All eighteen nations on the main content had been trapped in the worst wars the world had ever seen. Enemy soldiers and monsters ravaged the land. Scared villagers from less defended regions that could flee escaped to the cities, unintentionally bringing parasites and diseases with them. Political opponents used this opportunity to overthrow weaker leaders while warlords from less unified regions saw it as a chance to gain control of their rival’s land. There where enemies everywhere and people did whatever they had to to survive.

Out of the chaos came a discovery— taking the lives of others has an unpredictable and extraordinary effect. The changes were small at first— an injury needing much less time to heal, a small boost in strength, improved senses, and increased tolerance for pain— however, as the fighting continued, these abilities were strengthened and people with new powers appeared. These new findings led to the quick shift in power as stronger nations begun using these individuals as weapons while smaller or weaker countries were either forced to surrender or conquered by more powerful invaders. Villages were often attacked and traveling alone or in small groups without hired protection all but guaranteed travelers wouldn’t make it to their destination safely. Getting stronger was all that mattered.

Because of their strength, supernatural abilities, and assumed amorality, those who gained their powers by taking the lives of others became associated with the other monsters that plagued humanity and became known as demons. They were pretty rare— their actions often made them targets of resentment and the transition itself was a slow process that very few people who weren’t actively fighting in the war would be able to manage.

Many decades passed and, for the most part, the chaos died down. Tensions are present in some regions but the war is considered over, replaced by a new age of commerce, and new systems and have been in place to protect the citizens in towns and cities.

Could be interesting. Do animal/monster kills count for the demonification?

Hm, I am curious to see more of this, especially since you didn't mention much about the "heroes" or demon hunters (I'm guessing they're usually the same, but not necessarily, esp. given you mentioned benevolent demons).

@Duthguy Not enough for it to really matter. They're not at a point to figure it out with science (though some try) and people from some regions have a higher tendency to believe there's some kind of spiritual energy transfer if the victim is human or a transient demon. People who hunt animals aren't at risk of becoming transient at all. With monsters and naturally born demons, any differences can be attributed to experience and the natural progression of skill. Some monster hunters take to executing criminal transients outside city or town walls to get stronger but there's an overall negative opinion many humans have about transients (being transient is proof the person is capable of being violent and there isn't a need for that anymore, they're dangerous/impossible to control/more of a monster than human now, they are reminders of times of great suffering, and so on) many demons or monster hunters are proud of avoiding tricks like that to become successful.

@SilverPaw There were people who specialized in hunting demons in the past but for the most part the ideology was "It's your problem, deal with it yourself." Now that it's more organized, it's become a profession. Many people who were either fighting battles or training for them lost their main reason for doing what they were doing when the war finally ended and people had enough of fighting. The idea of what a hero is or isn't changed very quickly. That's what I was thinking when I had to have of the title, anyway. It's been such a long time since I had to make titles for rps.

I am tentatively interested. Had an character idea in my head for a while now that I think I can use here.

I'm going to wait for more information on the world before I can definitively say whether I am in or not. A few questions come to mind first...

Is the world essentially like a medieval Europe but with the 'demons', magic, and some other things (regardless of whether the names and locations of towns/people/kingdoms etc. coincide with one of IRL)

Is there any sort of 'goal' or direction for the RP or is the story something we will be pretty much making up as we go along?

and when you get around to having concrete stuff on magic, I'd like to know how it works (more specifically what fuels or powers the magic) and is it something that anybody can learn or is it something that only certain people would have access to.

and if your curious about what I was thinking for a character, I was thinking it would be interesting to RP someone that could interact with people through their dreams and have it be mirrored in the physical world. So a Transient/Natural demon here. Think I'll even have some conflict with a split personality. An empathetic, altruistic one, and another that seeks to grow stronger with violence. A duality that often opposes each other, but sometimes may even work alongside eachother. Got a few ideas to limit this so as not to be OP as well.

Whenever you get an OOC or otherwise have more information, I'll prob think of other questions to add.

@Lurking Shadow Sorry it took so long but I needed a computer to type this out on.

I’m still writing out the details but two of the three countries are more or less European inspired. The larger of those also includes regions with people of a variety of ethnic groups after conquering most of its surrounding area. I put it under the medieval tag because of the level of technology the vast majority live with and the traditions they follow. Majority of those two countries are considered monotheistic however there is a good percentage of nontheistic people as well. There will always be zealots but overall it is thought that combining politics and religion is corruptive to both of those things. Their ultimate goal was to gain power, land, and resources. Converting others to their main religion was the business of priests and only for those who wish it. There are some local disputes and differences in beliefs that cause disagreements but for the most part the country is led and managed competently. The smaller one was a former ally they tried to conquer but failed because of their ability to defend their borders along with geography making things difficult. The third country is kind of inspired by feudal Japan with other stuff. The land is broken up between the major families. There is an emperor but most political power is given to the heads of the families due to decades of meddling. There isn’t any fighting now but rivalries and attempts to gain influence makes tensions rise so they’re on the edge of conflict.

I usually wait until I understand the characters before making a list of potential directions the plot could take.

So far I have religion-based magic, tradition-based magic, and item-based magic. The first two humans can learn but it takes time to study and practice. Usually, it’s things like limited healing, barriers, visions of the future, and protection spells and the like. Sometimes a strong demon will pretend to be a deity and act like they’re giving a person powers to mess with them, though. Item-based includes things like enchanted or cursed weapons, seals and other things like that. Item-based magic can be made through religion or traditional based practices are safe for just about anyone to use, but items that have gained their enchantments through surviving a particularly terrible event or existing for a very long time should be avoided. It’s possible to wield or carry such an item but the outcome can turn very bad very quickly. Gaining abilities by becoming transient was much quicker and there weren’t as many limitations. Children of humans and naturally born demons may have innate abilities that are sometimes even stronger than their nonhuman parent’s (they’re considered natural born demons as well).

If you do join with that character, mine could be a foil for yours. Mine’s going through a one soul, two bodies situation with all the traits he tried to suppress left in the original one after an accident.

@layers How would you handle that one soul two bodies things, randomly transforming into one form, a hive mind, or both bodies existing and the consciousness switching between them?

I'm interested in this. The idea of portraying a naturally born demon who looks something like my avatar and has a natural motherhood instinct to try and protect the monstrous demons in the wild from hunters and has a sort of spiritual kinship With the monstrous ones, even to the point of being able to calm the highly aggressive ones springs to mind.

Also reading the phrase "naturally born" again and again is putting this song in my head. Tyvm.
