Welcome to GEARs: Silent Line GEARs: Silent Line is an RPG set in a far-off time, on a far-off world, where Earth is less-than a legend and 'human' is a term that only exists in language. The world of Arvara is a different one from our own, inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, who know their origins are not those of natural evolution - but not where they come from.
Their world and society is, for the most part, a peaceful one. But not without it's challenges or dangers, both natural, and of their own making. Dark things are rising, and danger seems to closing in. Rumours seem to be gaining a disturbing sense of solid, tangible reality. People are going missing. Dangerous or disturbing terrorist incidents, kidnappings, riots, conflicts and attacks are growing in number. And the urban myth of the organisation, cult, or secret society known as the 'Silent Line' seems to be growing in prominence...
Admidst this, in the small, but proud, modern, and respected kingdom of Solernia, a handful of military officers and members of the Royal Council have decided that enough is enough. Despite opposition from others in their own military, they make a proposition to the Princess, and she grants her blessing. A special unit is formed; their goal: to use both direct and indirect methods to hunt down those missing and kidnapped from Solernia, and find out who is behind this rise in dangerous and deadly incidents, find out what they want, and put a stop to them - before the body count rises higher, or before total war erupts...
Players in GEARs: Silent Line act as GEAR pilots of the newly-reconstituted 33rd 'Ghost Hunters' Covert Operations Squadron of the Royal Solernian Defence Force. Handpicked and equipped with the best GEARs that Solernia can provide, they are sent out into the field to begin a mission that will lead to revelations about the nature of Arvara itself.
There are six positions available within the 33rd for players to take on, as follows:
Human intelligence means knowing how to speak to people, get information through persuasion or threat, having connections, etc. Cyberwarfare involves things like hacking, and other ways to wring information out of computers. Electronic warfare is things like jamming, counter-jamming, use of communications systems to eavesdrop, intercept information, etc. Combat Engineering involves the use of defensive positions, use of engineering equipment in field, breaching and construction of defences, and the like.
I decided to place all of the background info for the setting off-site, so that the editing of it and formatting was easier. While reading all of it all at once isn't necessary, it's all information that will help with picturing and understanding the background of the setting, and acts as a handy reference guide going forward. You can find it here:
Please do not post WIP character sheets on the thread, just post your sheet when it's ready for approval into the OOC. Once it has been approved by me, feel free to put it into the Characters Tab. Don't forget to remove all the OOC formatting! Images are fine for appearance, though please credit your artists, and respect their wishes if they do not want their art to be used for RP purposes.
Name:
Age:Over 21, under 50
Species:See Lore & BG for acceptable species
Appearance: Images can be inserted here; 'furry' style only. No anime beast-people with just cat ears/tails. No photo-manipulated, because they look creepy af.
Height:
Weight:
Personality: Some words about your characters' disposition and general personality; what they're like as a person.
History: Some information about your characters' life up to this point. What their family life was like, did they get into trouble, what kind of life have they had in the military and not up to this point? If you want to have secret things in your history, then please tell the GM - otherwise I can't weave it into the plot.
Hobbies & Interests: What does your character enjoy in their spare time? Gives a bit mor insight into your character, and gives things the GM can add into scenes for your character.
Personal Gear & Equipment: While your character does get standard issue weapons and equipment, what do they carry as part of their role; selected from the Lore & Background guide.
As a basic rule of thumb, follow the Rpers Guide To Etiquette by Lady Amalthea, found on this very forum.
Yes, we know. Furries. But please, leave all your prejudices and expectations at the door. Equally, don't bring furry slang/jokes/bullshit into the game. No 'UwU' or 'OwO' in here please. We're running a sci-fi action game.
I shouldn't have to say this, but keep it clean. I have no problem with romance, and even some light titillation and a bit of tongue-in-cheek bawdy humour, but this isn't a sexual RP at ALL. Don't come here looking for that.
Equally, I have no bloody problem with a bit of fucking swearing, you bunch of cunts, but don't take it to excess, all right, fuckers?
A sense of humour is not optional. Please be good-natured and good-humoured to one another in the OOC.
I'm English and live in England, therefore I will not likely be online at the same time as the majority of people, because time zones are a thing. Please have patience for me to answer your questions and make replies. (Also, the fact I'm English applies to both of the previous rules)
Minimum post of one per week, per person. If you can't post, please mention in the OOC or drop me a PM. If it's unexpected - i.e. family emergency, your internet goes out, etc - then just let me know when you come back, and I'll catch you up. These things happen.
It is not my job to chase you to post.
If you're interested enough to be here in the first place, then it's up to you to post. If you're 'too lazy' to keep up, then I'm too lazy to chase your arse to get you to do it. It's a matter of manners and etiquette.
You don't have to play as a nice character - but don't be surprised that, if you treat people like shit, people treat you like shit. It can be a pretty lonely persona to take on.
All characters are part of the military unit mentioned in the blurb above. No bad guys, no mercs, no foreign characters. This is to make things easier and more straightforward, and to keep internal consistency.
All players pilot the same make and mark of GEAR, again to keep internal consistency, and keep it more 'real robot' style. You do at least get to select your own weapon loadouts.
I have a very low level of patience for belligerance, meanness, unpleasantry and snarkiness towards me, or other players. If you don't like something, then leave. I'd rather that than having to kick you out. This is supposed to be something we do for fun and enjoyment. Be nice to me, and I'll be nice to you, unless you give me a reason to do otherwise.
Don't talk down to people. I don't care how much knowledge of real-world weapons and systems you might have, or how much of an encyclopedia on legs you are about such things. This is my world, and it works how I want it to. If you're trying to be a smartarse because you've found a 'loophole', then you're not playing in the spirit of things, and you should probably leave.
If I don't know about it, then it doesn't exist. You may have this amazing secret plot worked out for your character - but if you don't tell me about it, then it ain't happening. Because I've already got a storyline worked out, and if it doesn't fit, then it's not going in. Same with technology and whatever you 'think' it should be like.
This is a sci-fi game. There is no magic or supernatural content. Please respect the setting and keep it in mind.
GM's word is final. I appreciate people wanting to help, but final approval for plot, lore, and characters comes from me. Though, by all means, please feel free to make suggestions and help others with ideas and information where possible, and point out if something isn't there or working when it should be, because that helps us all.
Guess this is when I start spending hours trying to figure out a good name whereas I can figure everything else about the character in 40 minutes. Heavy Gunner sounds like it'll be the role for the character I am working on. 'speak softly and carry a big stick'. I always liked having either more dakka or bigger dakka when possible
So, say I wanted the Marksman/Recon slot. I’m more interested in the recon part, personally. Would something like a Gear-sized machete or other blade be viable at all?
Personality: Bubbly, excitable, and always so full of energy. She is ever curious about new technology and people alike, and will always try to figure both out with such a focused conviction that she tends to lose sight of her original goals.
Born into your average otter family, Rishun spent her days learning about agriculture and oceanograhy, on the south of Solernia, her family claiming one island off the coast less than a mile in diameter. But despite her ability to learn, she soon found her love for technology much more engaging than even the waves which her birth made her love unconditionally.
She soon found herself in the fast track through school, excelling at all subjects linked to computers and science, though she would be considered a flunk for language classes. But in most cases otters are given more slack. On a whole Otters learn several dialects of their own shorthand language out of tradition.
And so Rishun graduated among the top in her class for computer science and coding. But for her future....nowhere else handled the latest than the military. So, against her family's wishes she enlisted and became one of the rare otters to wear the Solernia military uniform.
Hobbies & Interests: tinkering, fiddling with coding, creating little technological toys that seemed to have a life of their own. But above all else she had a pure joy for swimming at any opportunity. To the point where she wil research the nearest body of water she could swim in if she is given leave.
A case of mini bots that have the ability of flight and with small grippers, and they number six in total, and the case is a charging station along with a computer with programs to change their function. It can be slung across her back and secured like any military backpack across the chest and waist.
A harness hooked around her waist and down her thick otter tail that housed a dozen graphene batteries, which are connected to a series of sockets to the belt around her waist. She can plug in most devices and power them for as long as her batteries hold out.
An optional communications pack she swaps out with the mini bot case can vary from boosting and dampening local communications, while also serving as a mobile access point to the net.
Weaponry, she carries a stun baton on her hip as well as a standard issue pistol, though she is always tinkering with different forms of ammo for it.
I apologize for making a post in the character tab. I was on auto pilot while making it.

Since you 'axed' there is a GEAR-sized axe available, and I'm sure it'd be more than possible to custom-make a machete; after all, it's not much of a reach if there's already a knife and an axe - perhaps our friendly combat engineer could oblige you xP Maybe you could fashion it out of a discarded VTOL rotor blade or something cool like that?
Glad to see everyone picking out roles with no issue, and I'm excited to see what characters you all come up with!
Rishun looks great, and is totally approved. I really like her already, and I can see a lot of personality in her that really reflects what otters come across like too. I also like the nod to your old character with the surname! I'll add her to the list of character in the 0th post.
@Silverwind Blade Okay, sweet~ Could I tech it up later on, perhaps? I kinda had an image of something a little like Raiden’s high-frequency blade.
Potentially, none of the melee weapons in the setting at GEAR or person scale feature anything like that as yet, but who knows what you might end up encountering as the story progresses
Hey I'm afraid that the One Note link to the lore document is broken. You might want to fix that soon, Id love to learn more about this, if you are still accepting
Appearance: Fionn is a very large individual compared to others with thick dark brown fur and a strip of light brown fur running down the back. The length of his fur can give him a puffy appearance concealing his actual strength. The most discerning feature would be a black marking of several interwoven knots on his upper chest, both a reminder of his culture and a symbol of his beliefs.
Height: 2.3 m or roughly 7’ 6” Weight: 265kg or roughly 584 lbs.
Personality: Despite his size, he has a quiet and empathetic personality. He is slow to make friends, but those he considers one earns his respect and loyalty. Normally calm and reserved, few things incite anger in him (such as his friends being in danger). He is rarely seen smiling, rather adopting a stoic expression at almost all times. The trait he holds more value in above all others is loyalty, in this regard he will dutifully serve his country and his unit even when detrimental to himself.
History: Fionn had a decent life. He always had food, a roof over his head, and (largely in part to his size) rarely had problems with others. He always made decent grades in school, not particularly great but better than average. He had no friends, but that never bothered him. He was always fine with solitude. Indeed, he had little to complain about, and yet he still felt a void in himself.
Throughout his past, he never really felt happiness. Only content at best. There was something missing, there had to be right? Others seemed to feel happiness, but it was a foreign concept to him. With the empty feeling in his soul, it was appearant that it needed to be filled with something. Fionn was wise enough to realize turning to alcohol, drugs, and other such pleasures would only offer temporary relief at best. That would mean recurring indulgences and forming an addiction. He would need something more permanent.
He felt he was simply missing a purpose. That he never had a place where he felt he belonged. To him, it seemed the best choice was to join the military. His nation gave much to him, so it also seemed right he give back with his life if need be. At the very least, it should serve a distraction from the melancholy. Hobbies/Interests: A bit of an Armchair philosopher, he spends a lot of time quietly pondering the nature of things. He also enjoys reading fiction, with a preference in Horror and Sci-Fi, and trying to figure out the worldview in them. At times when the stresses of life start to get to him, he likes to go out and last nature with little more than a knife and his pebble (to read a novel or two) for days at a time.
Personal gear/Equipment:
GEAR suit and helmet
RI MT-A1 Thumper Grenade Launcher w/ 6 round revolver cylinder
M57 Shotgun
RI M61 Combat Revolver
Pebble
Personal Survival Kit
@Silverwind Blade Well, it only took me getting sidetracked 3 times on this character, better than my usual 5 or 6. I also thought of another question, would modules on the GEAR be easily changed on the battlefield or is it a complicated process that needs a maintenance bay or something? such as in a potential instance where someone would salvage a perfectly working *whatever* from a fallen GEAR, would they be able to attach it then and there?

Totally happy with Fionn, he sounds great, and I can see he and Sean getting along pretty well too. Feel free to post him in the characters tab ^^
Good question on the GEAR issue too! Not something I'd considered, but a good thing to bring up. I mean, as far as hand-held weapons go, absolutely. It's like picking up someone elses' rifle. Regarding other equipment or weapons, I could imagine it would be possible, but would be less pick-it-up-off-you-go, and more the kind of thing you can do once the battle is done with two GEARs, one to mount it on and one to hold it in place and some simple tools and a few OS options. Hope that answers the question, and seems reasonable!
I know that I said I'd post my CS last night, but I had an RP reply I needed to finish as I'd been dragging my feet on it, and then the sleepies came for me in the night lmao.
It's about 3 quarters finsished though. I can round out the history when I get home tonight. Sorry for the delay and hope you guys like Mountain Goats.

Moutain Goats are awesome, and I'm totally laid back, so no rush. Not qute ready to start yet, and I'm not going to be worrying about chivvying people along to finish their CS just yet :)
