But, Wait, What About The Canon!? Ugh.
Fine. Let's address this. There's a lot of episodes for people to watch, and then there's the comics too, and there's going to be some new specials coming out at some point. It is safe to assume that while stuff that went down in the show went down,
other things may have also occurred, and so as long as it doesn't contradict something that's established in the show, it's probably good to go. My goal is to make sure that people with only a passing familiarity to the show can play as well.
I WANNA PLAY FINN! And I want to do nothing but eat cake and take naps, so we're just going to have to live with some dissatisfaction in our lives. For what it's worth, I've got reasons for wanting original characters. These reasons are mostly mysterious, but the least mysterious one is "
I don't want people to get into arguments about whether Character X should be like that". The world is a big enough place, even with a chunk taken out of it, and so I want us to tell our own story with our own characters.
How many players are you accepting? I'm aiming for four (or maybe five) players. I'll honestly be pleasantly surprised if I get one.
Why isn't this a free roleplay? Because. I know this is going to look like a silly game, but let's make a bit of effort to write a paragraph or two in our posts. I'm not going to require extensive backstories or things (
I've got opinions on this subject! OPINIONS!) like that, but you need a paragraph or two to fit in some good puns and the like.
What's the tone and theme of the game? The tone is probably fairly obvious, given the setting - it's going to be some light-hearted fun, with some action, some adventure, some time. I'm not going to pretend that I can capture the feel of the setting perfectly, but if you come into the game thinking "it's Adventure Time" rather than, say, "it's Game of Thrones", you'll be fine. Theme-wise, the story will be about would-be adventurers righting wrongs, or wronging rights, or
something. Adventures!
Can I play a- The answer is
probably. There's a lot of different, and strange, species inhabiting the Land of Ooo. That being said, some character concepts aren't going to be a good fit, so keep in mind the general Adventure Time mood when deciding what you want to play.
You didn't let me finish! Can I play a human? The time period the game is set, beyond "After the Great Gum War", is kind of nebulous. If you've got your heart set on playing a human, then we can define the point the game is happening with a little more detail, and set it after the humans have begun returning to Ooo.
Hopefully we can reconcile everyone's desires this way, and if not, we'll have to press the "
Alternate Timeline!" button. If you don't have one of those on your keyboard, that's not
my fault.
Where can I find out information about Adventure Time? A useful resource is the
fandom wiki to look up particular things. Obviously watching the show will help. There's also
ATChronology, which is full of spoilers, but breaks down the timeline of the world in a fairly readable manner. More readable than
this wall of text, I'm sure.
Can I ask you more questions? Yes. Either leave a message in this thread, or send me a PM if you're embarrassed to ask it in front of the others. No judgement here. Well, maybe a
little judgement. A smidgen. I may set up a Discord for the group once we've got enough players to start moving,
but if anyone isn't happy with using it to plot and scheme and poke one another, then we'll just stick to the good ol' forums.
Are there gonna be posting requirements? An order? You want to know how much time you need to commit, that's cool. I'm hoping that I can make a post every few days, so roughly two a week, and it'd be
nice if people can match that. I'm happy enough to be flexible, and will aim to not move things along until everyone's had a chance to post. Let's say "
if I've got to wait a week for somebody to respond to something, we'll move on without them". Obviously if everyone in the group wants to change things up about how often people are expected to post, or if they want to institute a rigid posting order, we can discuss that.
When are we going to get started? At the time of writing this, it's rapidly approaching the dreaded "
festive season" and the awkwardness of New Years. Once that's done and dusted, we can get the game started. I'll still be about and checking the site and what-not while avoiding making eye-contact with drunken and irate relatives, so will be able to answer - or at least look at - questions players have during the winter-y break.
How should I apply for this nonsense? Leave a message here. In the unlikely event the game attracts enough attention to get more people, it's going to be on a first-come-first-served basis. If someone drops out and we need more players to cover them (
there's always at least one, right?), I'll poke people who replied to this interest check in order to offer them a space. In short - if there's a surge of interest in this, god help us, and also not to worry if you don't make it in the first pass.
