What begins as a simple job form famed explorer Volothamp Geddarm will pit players to a series of intrigue, combat, and debate with some of Waterdeep's most famous and infamous figures as you unravel the dastardly plots of the various villains and personalities that run the city.

A urban campaign where players are encouraged to use their skills as well as they can their swords. The greatest fortunes require the greatest gamble as you plan to Heist the Dragon!

Waterdeep

Waterdeep, aka "The City of Splendors" or "The Crown of the North", is a major influence of the north. It lays 150 miles north of Daggerford on the shores of the Sword Coast. The road to Waterdeep is well paved and well patrolled. The city is the hub of trading from the mineral-rich lands to the north, the merchant kingdoms of Amn and Calimshan to the south, the kingdoms of the Inner Sea to the east, and the sea kingdoms and traders to the west. Waterdeep's authority extended between thirty to forty miles from its walls.

Waterdeep was named for its outstanding natural deep-water harbor, and the city that grew up at this site became the commercial crossroads of the northern Realms. More than 100,000 people made their home in Waterdeep. The city sprawled northward from the sea, spreading along the flanks of Mount Waterdeep, which used to be home to the Melairkyn, a mithral-mining dwarven clan, and the entire length and great depth of the mountain was riddled with passages and tunnels, most of which were occupied by deadly creatures whose presence in the mountain predated the founding of the city itself. The halls of Undermountain located beneath the city were a popular target for adventurers, who enjoyed the close vicinity of the city's main taverns and temples where aid could be purchased through donations.

Rules:
1. Standard rules apply. Follow Guild rules first and foremost, and my rules afterwards. I'll be the final arbiter when it comes to how I employ rules as well as how I interpret such things like certain abilities, spells, and so forth. I will allow you to discuss them with me, but once I make a final rule it will be set in stone.

2. In these turbulent times I know that we can't always post in a timely manner. When players are not in combat, I encourage that you only post after at least two other people have posted, and if you plan to have a back-and-forth dialog I encourage collaboration to prevent back-and-forth posting. However I expect everyone to at least be able to post something within 7 days of whoever posted previously. This is especially important in combat. If you cannot post within 7 days, I will temporarily take control of your character and do whatever I feel is suitable or most useful.

3. Related to above, please at least communicate if you have some reason you cannot post consistently or simply lack the inspiration to post anything. I won't be too strict on how much you write in a post due to how quickly things can change in a game like D&D, but you must at least show that you are still part of the game.

4. There are specific homebrew/variant rules I apply for my games, and if any of them concerns you or if you have questions for them please feel free to ask me about it.

5. More rules to add as I see fit.

Homebrew/Variant Rules:
1. Drawing a potion takes up your free object interaction, and you may drink a potion as your bonus action, however feeding a potion to someone else requires your main action.

2. I do allow the disarm action variant rule. In short, when you take an attack action you can declare that you are attacking to disarm the enemy of a object or weapon they are holding in their hands. They must roll an Acrobatics or Athletics check against your attack. If your attack is higher, they drop the item. If your attack is lower they are able to hold onto their item. If you are capable of multiple weapon attacks such as through the Extra Attack Feature or Martial Arts feature, you may choose to disarm instead of harm the enemy. It does still count as an offensive attack however.

3. Downtime will be something implemented in this campaign later on. Downtime is when nothing of particular importance is happening during the day, so instead of having to worry about what is happening at the individual moment you will be able to do something in the general time. There are various activities you can do during your downtime to either gain a new skill or earn money. Downtime is split into three 8-hour incriments: Day (6AM-2PM), Afternoon (2PM-10PM), and Night (10PM-6AM). A given downtime activity is implied to take at least 8 hours unless otherwise specified. It is also assumed that these activities otherwise do not require the use of any specific abilities, spells, or causes you any notable harm. These activities do not count a short or long rest even if they are not specifically hazardous.

Doing downtime activities generally require some sort of ability check or a specific skill check. Additionally it may cost money to do certain downtime activities or otherwise require specific conditions to be met before you can try. Some downtime activities may result in failure if you roll too low, or may just result in less success than you would have hoped to accomplish.

Examples of Downtime Activities:

  • Learning a new language
  • Crafting an item
  • Preforming for money
  • Gathering information

4. While I'll mostly be keeping to the book when it comes to creatures and encounters, there may come a time where you face an enemy who is very similar to something you may know about, but for some reason has abilities unlike what you expect. I'll keep it simple: I don't care if you metagame a monster's ability or information because there's a very high probability that I'm changing something behind the scenes or there is some variance I'm adding. Sometimes this can be as minor as changing what spells a certain enemy knows or has prepared, and sometimes this means straight up making up a new monster to fight. If you notice something is off, I encourage that you proceed with caution, because you're probably right that there is something amiss and your conventional knowledge may not apply.

5. Death happens. In the event that your character dies, Waterdeep does have powerful enough clerics who can provide you resurrection services if you are able to make the donation needed to replenish any material costs for the service.
  • Gentle Repose is simple a 10 GP service fee for ten days. Corpses under the effect of Gentle Repose will be safe guarded in specific catacombs where their bodies may be recovered once enough funds have been gathered for their resurrection. Any body that is not claimed or paid for after the ten days will be cremated and the ashes buried. Any possession belonging to the corpse aside from their attire will be donated to the temple.
  • Speak with Dead will cost 10 GP and you must prove to have some close connection to the person, such as being a friend or family. The priest on hand is contractually obligated to not engage in any deception or trickery while speaking to the dead nor are they obligated to keep any information they learn through the service a secret.
  • Revivify will cost 300 GP as an immediate donation. Failure to resurrect due to limited time constraints or issues with the body will not grant you a refund.
  • Raise Dead will cost 500 GP and may be arranged with the temple prior. Like Revivify, any failure to resurrect due to time constraints or issues with the body such as missing vital parts to survival will not be the responsibility of the temple and will not warrant a refund.

6. Related to above, if your character dies or if you just want to make a new character, you are allowed to do so. Stats must be rolled 4d6 dropping the lowest die. You may roll two sets and choose whichever you like most. You must use the Guild's dice roller and send links to each roll.

Items will be determined based off your class plus whatever you gain from your background.

Official books such as the Player Handbook, Volo's Guide, Xanathar's Guide, Elemental Evil, Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Sword Coast Adventure Guide, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica are all legal, however I expect you to be able to show my where exactly you find any information regarding whatever ability or race you're using with those resources either online or via screenshots.

7. You may draw a weapon as part of your attack action as long as it has the throwing property. Other weapons without the throwing property still uses your free object interaction for that turn.

8. More Homebrew rules as I see fit.

@Decker219@Exit@Idea@Skwint

And so at the crack of midnight, I create the new Waterdeep Dragon Heist game. We'll continue exactly where we left off. If you could repost your Character sheets in the Character Sheet Section, that would be grand.

Additionally, since I am now the DM I want to ask you guys: What do you want to do with Yoh? I'm willing to bump him off for one reason or another if you don't like the idea of a DMPC. Personally speaking I still kinda want to use him, but obviously due to my nature as a DM a lot of Yoh's decisions and opinions will not matter as much as the groups, as to prevent obvious DM favoritism for myself.

I see I wasn't tagged - I assume I'm still welcome though, seeing as my character's header is still in the first post in IC?

About Yoh, I'm usually not a fan of DMPCs since it's so easy to even accidentally use DM knowledge with them. But I also feel it's a bit unfair if you don't get to use him at all, since you didn't originally sign up for GM duty. The whole making him a villain thing sounded interesting, but I'm not sure if that'd be interesting for you? Anyway, I won't make a fuss if he stays as a DMPC either.

What do others think?

Ah Dammit, I knew I was one short. I kept thinking “I’m suppose to have five players. One wait I guess there’s me” but I figured I was off. Sorry about that. But yes you can still play.
