Public knowledge is the rumors, theories, and gossip going around about your hero. Things that they have said to either the press or other heroes in a non-confidential setting. The facts that have come out or are common knowledge.
Joel Beck is a controversial figure among heroes. Some find him endearing, some find him annoying, most find him to be completely batshit crazy.
For one, Joel, better known around the hero world as Wraith, makes a lot of outlandish claims that have very little proof to back them up, and honestly sound like something straight out of a bad scifi movie. He claims to have Fatal Familial Insomnia, which prevents him from sleeping or losing consciousness. This is a very rare prion disease that, as the name implies, is fatal. Joel claims to have received an experimental treatment for it that slowed the deterioration of his brain and his inevitable descent into utter madness. But the rest of his claims imply he might already be there.
According to him, this experimental treatment made him clairvoyant. He can use psychic abilities to commune with the dead, along with some other weird shit. Joel can often be found talking to himself, claiming that he's speaking to a ghost. Of course, only he can see these "ghosts".
His wildest claim is that he is in cahoots with the literal grim reaper, who is allegedly a pretty cool guy. Ol' Grim hates having to reap innocent souls, and upon discovering Joel and his weird ghost nonsense, gave him his blessing to stop the death of innocent lives whenever he can. The suit he wears was supposedly gifted to him by the reaper and, as long as he wears it, he can not die.
Again, all of these claims have no solid proof other than the ramblings of an already mentally unstable and chronically sleep deprived man. The general consensus is that Joel is merely a mutant with a healing factor who happens to be very good at detective work, crazy as hell, and should definitely see his therapist more often.
Joel is also notoriously violent towards his enemies, has no qualms with killing the bad guy (apparently the reaper gave him the thumbs up), and is overall not well trusted among the hero community. The only reason he isn't in prison is because he's buttered up the cops by doing their work for them.
Literally the only reason people still talk to this guy is because of his amazing detective skills. He has helped police crack over 600 cold cases. This charity work of his also might be why the police turn a blind eye to the rumors of his participation in illegal prize fighting.
Overall, if you have a mystery that needs solving, or a dangerous criminal that needs catching, Joel is your guy. Just be prepared to deal with his...particularities along the way.
Akeno Kudo is something of an unknown when it comes to Chicago’s heroes. Most people wouldn’t even know she existed and even for those aware of her she would fly under the radar compared to flashier, more well-known heroes. She doesn’t have attention grabbing powers, she hasn’t dealt with any major incidents or appeared much in the news, she doesn’t even have a proper costume; her public presence is mostly limited to a few eye witness accounts from people she has helped and a small number of hastily filmed videos online.
What is known is this; she operates almost exclusively at night, mostly responds to crimes that are already in progress, preventing the act and then calling the police to deal with the clean-up, she knows how to fight skilfully, and she doesn’t speak much if at all during her appearances. Aside from this, her ‘costume’ is made up of clothing that would look more at home in a gym than on a hero, albeit all in white, and she wears a red and white kitsune mask to hide her identity. It would be easy to come to the conclusion that she isn’t a hero at all, rather a common vigilante who thought to put on a mask, were it not for the fact that she does have powers, as evidenced by the burn marks on the people she fights and the witness accounts of how the air around her is searing hot at times.
All in all, she mostly just comes across as a young woman with a power who decided to start fighting crime; though there are some that take her lack of speech, all white clothing and random appearances to instead speculate that she is some kind of spirit, appearing and disappearing when she is needed. She has a small following online, a few people enamoured with the mystery of her who look forward to any new sightings, but since she hasn’t publically announced her presence as a hero she remains something of an urban legend. They didn’t even name themselves, instead being granted a name by the media and people online based off of the mask she wears; Kitsune.

[ New! ] Thread: Who’s your favorite Chicago hero?

WaffleWarrior:
So there’s been a ton of threads recently talking about everyone’s favorite heroes all over the world, but there hasn’t been one talking about hometown heroes. So here it is: Who’s your favorite Chicago-based hero and why is it Grim?
Professional Newbie:
Of all the heroes in Chicago you pick Grim? Sure the guy’s alright but he’s kind of a ham. I’ve seen less dramatic school girls at least they don’t have their own personal spotlights. Isn’t his power shadow based anyway? Seems stupid to handicap yourself.
Groovz:
Grim's drones are my favorite hero: I also self-destruct when anyone tries to get to know me
WaffleWarrior:
Being a ham is his thing and super heroic! It takes attention off the victims so he can get them out safe, and it’s not like the spotlights stay on the whole fight. Plus he has way more solved incidents than we’ve seen, I’m pretty sure he knows when to not announce his presence.
And yes, the drones! They’re super cool, I always feel safe when I spot one overhead. If anything happened in sight of one of them he’d be there in an instant!
Strawberry Moon:
actually i met grim a year ago. he used a lame one liner and finger gunned. huge dork. his voice really is as deep as the clips though. kind of has a weird growl to it i think he’s a cyborg lol
Sylaryon:
omg guys what if grim was the person who gave wraith his suit?? mystery solved
The_Night_Fears_Me:
First of all, that’s fucking stupid and here’s why. Grim's icon is a dog, he has it on his belt and all his drones are branded with it. Given the lack of any Reaper-like paraphernalia the common theory is his theme is based on a church grim - a dog. Do some research for once in your life.
Cubs Fan Chippy:
Sir are you suggesting my fanart of Grim as a dog in a cloak and holding a scythe is inaccurate? Also Wraith’s crazy.
Sylaryon:
If Grim didn’t want us to draw conclusions he should’ve chosen a different name. Of course people are going to think Reaper when he can disappear into darkness and uses shadows as weapons
AvalancheSupremacy:
This thread is going off track fast. Anyway, since Avalanche isn’t based in Chicago I’d say my favorite local is MetalHead
Jack Tailor is a private investigator who works closely with both the police and heroes of Chicago. Nobody really knows much about him except one day he showed up and helped solve cold crimes that the police couldn't figure out. What is known is that he runs a business in downtown Chicago in a small spot in between two massive buildings. With a neon sign reading Mystery Mystic Jack Tailor with a magic symbol boarding the words. He rarely gets paid and is always on the brink of going bankrupt. Even with his need to make money, he constantly takes on jobs with little to no pay due to his inability to see people in need suffer without his help. Although his job is a private eye he has taken on a flurry of different tasks ranging from solving missing person cases to fixing people's problems with their houses or cars who can't afford a professional to do it. Even helping small businesses when short on workers. This earned him the nickname Jack of all trades.
[ NEW! ] Thread: Bouncer is a hero CONFIRMED! New photos prove!

What exactly proves this rabbit-headed spook is a hero? Internet hearsay about her swooping in to save your roommate’s cousin’s best friend’s coworker the other night? The occasional, probably-photoshopped blurry smartphone picture of her standing sorta-close to more well-known vigilantes? She’s a criminal, hands-down; you can’t seriously be trying to convince me someone who attacks cops is somehow a misunderstood woobie with a hidden heart of gold, and that's not even getting into her obvious connection to the Lycanthropes. Clown thread.
SuperPuper
what connection is that, bread?
BreadRangerZero
She literally hangs out at the Wolf Den every single day, mask and all. Like how could it not be any more blatant.

Sorry, did I miss something? What does the Wolf Den have to do with the Lycanthropes? /srs
Nova was a famous and beloved superhero, a household name in her time. Her real name, however, remains unknown to this day. She was found deceased after authorities responded to a call regarding heavy gun fire inside what was supposed to be an empty warehouse. Her cause of death was said to be multiple gunshot wounds, but the whole thing was kept pretty hush hush. There are no post-mortem pictures, or if there are, they are heavily guarded. Her funeral was closed casket. The general, and very morbid, belief was that there wasn't much left.
Her powers drew from a unique energy that she could produce. She could create engery blasts or shields, fly, and even create small scale explosions should there be a need. However, Nova was always very careful to not cause too much collateral damage. The popular theory was that she was much more powerful than she let on.
As far as her personal life goes, there is virtually no information available. If her true identity had ever been found out, it was never released. She was notoriously private when it came to anything outside of hero and humanitarian work.
