It's a history book. When you get down to it, isn't that really what history books are?

I admit I only skimmed it and thought it was supposed to be a regular novel.

Meanwhile I read Wealth of Nations and take notes.

Legit. I got three pages of notations so far on the intro and chapter one of the division of labor.

Heh, I didn't even take notes when I was in school. I just drew shit in the notebook.

But yeh, I actually like the old aristocratic, somewhat snarky way 18th century books are written. The best part of Wealth of Nations is when he disses Scotland or some other poor country.

Also, you'll be surprised how little that book meshes with the Libertarian idea of what it is. The guy supports the idea of labor unions (in 1776 mind you), and thinks adult education is economically damaging.

Every time I had to take a note about third-world nations I slapped "savage" into quotes just because.

He ripped on Poland too for not having any manufacturing, then somehow made a thinly veiled rip on France to praise England. So that old-school nationalism is there which is funny. In my copy it was like, "While France has better conditions to grow corn than Poland, it is England which is the best and everyone knows it".

Gotta love the British imperialists. Hard as nails yet they worship a fat man with inbred genes who lives on a muddy island.

Someone's trying to outdo us, boys.

Whole RP looks set up with the purpose of fulfilling rape and violent fetish fantasies with people restricted to the Japanese forces.

Even complete with a scoring system. Winner gets to be executed for war crimes!

You have to wonder how the thought process goes to think that's a good idea.

"You know what would be great? A warcrimes RP. But it can't be a generic war-crimes setting; it has to be real-life. And it can't just be trying to SURVIVE it: you're the one doing it!"

At that point I think the focus of the RP could shift away from being any sort of legitimate exploration of humanity in the face of or being forced to commit atrocities and more like a thinly veiled fetish in some manner. Especially when scored.

Now if it were trying to survive and escape Japanese forces as Chinese civilians as well as players also being allowed to play as Japanese soldiers without the pretense that you need to kill and rape horribly if Japanese, maybe I could get behind it. But as it was proposed it's like making a Holocaust RP where you're the Nazi and you rank up through the RP through beating Jews to death.

Pretty much what I thought. I can see value in trying to write about the human elements of a real-world event like this, even on the side of the perpetrators. But just telling people to write atrocities and then scoring them on it? That's fucked.

Found a photograph of the Dire Dawa battlefield. This is standing well outside of Dire Dawa, looking north to Shinile, so everything in this photo and forward would essentially be where the tank battle was fought.

Top comments sum it up.

He sounds more passionate about not wanting Trump in the White House than he was about getting HIMSELF into the White House!

I've been playing with Google Earth instead of doing work, and it has more photos than google maps. So, for instance here's some better pictures of Sevan than I've seen before.

And here's an airport roughly coincident with where the Chinese Pemba base is.

Sevan makes me think of the Armenian Chernobyl exclusion zone. It just looks desolate.

I tried looking up pictures for it once for reference material to do a Sevan painting but all I could ever come up with was the local monastic collage and the lake.
