A weird application for some Scottish-Irish independent state that was force to flee to Madagascar. So now they're presumably independent there. It was clear he didn't make any effort to learn.

You'll have to make a sheet/app. I think the US already has some lore to it, so just write up a summary of that, with some new stuff added to it. Because it has lore, a lot of it is already decided and can't be changed, but you are free to add your own details to it. You are also free to make up whatever has happened in recent times. It's all good as long as it doesn't contradict what has been established.

Howdy sir. The US has been hurting for some good direction. I'm sure you'll do a good job of it.

The US has always been a popular choice with a lot of players, but unfortunately, most of them eventually drop out after they've made vast and often-bizarre changes to the country. For example, the the United States had a socialist president for a term basically because le communism is liek totally epic cool XD. In order to accommodate these changes, initially we would perform some substantial reworking of the backstory just so they didn't seem quite as ridiculous alongside everything else. We've become stricter about this now have new players conform to our lore rather than conform the lore to new players.

We reworked the lore on the changeover. It should be in the OP still in one of the lore summaries. The US is still pretty battered all things considered, and it kept a bit of socialism in its government. But that - even "Americanized Socialism" - got elected out and some other shit happened. Vilage was mostly in charge of that.

He and I tried to iron it out when it was initially a big issue but even then Vilage ended up taking more charge of the nation when he ran his single-character senator.

Yea, but then we ignore the greater implications of the US not really asserting itself on the world stage as it did after the first World War. All industrial growth before hand notwithstanding.
