[OOC] The Clowns of Valerith

The Kingdom of Valerith. Today it stands as a proud beacon of law, religion, academics, and everything that is good and just! Everything is uniform and as they should be.

Many years ago this Kingdom and its beloved people were rocked and shaken to its core by a horrific revelation. While historians have recorded this revelation, none would dare to speak of it again. This revelation led to the Ruling Family banning all magic from the School of Enchantment. Over time, the fear did not subside. Instead it grew and grew, until eventually, the Ruling Family banned all forms of entertainment.

They reasoned that entertainment was used as a conduit for Enchantment magic by Bards, so it was best to ban the tool for such foul magic as well. Anything that was of the creative arts that did not provide substance to the people of Valerith were banned. So, the people grew up without it.

Our story focuses on those who spit at this ban, and proudly show their colors while making mischief in their merry-making. Their first true adventure is about to begin, and it may lead to more revelations for the people of Valerith.

Hheeyyy. I see you have a bunch of players. However, I usually end up being note taker and with that inventory management. Most of the time I play high cha characters so that I can manage the funds with the best discounts or haggling possible. Just wondering how y'all are going to run the game. Furthermore, if you need it would like someone to bounce some concepts off of. I wouldn't mind helping out. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to play or cogm.

This kingdom sounds very Arthurian. No magic of x, y, and z. I mean in Arthurian lore it was a full magic ban. I imagine there being an enchantment branch of inquisitors who hunt those people down. Same could be said for the neceomncers.

The Mortem Finalem(Final Death) or Absoluta Mors(Absolute Death). Emblem could be a sun with a circle around it. The circle indicates the cycle of life. Undead break that cycle. The sun usually weakens undead. Furthermore it has a cycle.

Surdis Auribus (Deaf ears), Invisibilis Oculus (Unseen eye), Lingua Scissa(Snipped Tongue). These would have the generic entertainment icon of the three things with a line through them. Each face would be in the foreground depending on the branch. Surdis Auribus would have the face of someone stabbing themselves in the ears, Invisibilis Oculus would have the same but for the eyes, and Lingua Scissa would have the same except for the tongue being snipped.

These are just basic concepts and can be applied to other organizations that the kingdom has to hire or gets them forced upon them. Religious sects akin to the Vatican. Zealous, overbearing, they know best, and their faith is absolute kind of people.

After umming and ahhing for a bit, I think I might finally have a character concept I want to play and I'm working on that sheet.

... hope he's not a little too out there for what ya'll are going for ^^; Let's just say one of Haruki's earlier statements about fictitious stories being 'punishable by death' got me thinking.

Based on this Kingdom... is it safe to assume that anyone caught lying is punished with death? Mainly because anyone trying to manipulate others is seen as bad. I mean that is right, right?

Also, if the other two don't join up. I may make an old man, who knows things and drinks.

That is correct. It is safe to assume that. In fact, the fact that people have manipulated others in the past would be another reason that the Ruling Family decided to ban everything of the Creative Arts, other than it just being a way for enchanters to cast their magic.

I feel like with the no lying thing. People could be happier. Example. You have someone say that they don't like being a non citizen or want a career in x but ate required to be a citizen in order to do so. Get into military service in order to become a citizen!

I was also wanting to know if I could make a cursed King old man at the bar type? Thinking Paladin or Cleric. Could be that he broke his oath as a Paladin to save people or some such. He would have sold everything he had in order to survive. So powerful relics, armor, weapons and such. He may have the armor left. Something as a reminder of what he did. Maybe something smaller? I don't know.

Could I make Goku? I mean Vegeta always calls him a clown. jk jk.

Background: Writer
Personality: Already considered something of an eccentric in life, Arthek's resurrection has left him incredibly scatterbrained. The few memories he has left are interspersed with events from stories he's either read or written, he has a habit of calling people by the names of the characters he's based on them or characters they remind him of, and he views the whole world through a somewhat detached lens of an observer rather than a participant, with a tendency to get excited by dramatic twists or traumatic events as fodder for 'plot development' and 'character growth' rather than the painful experiences they truly are... and that's him on his best days. On his worse days, he can be downright cantankerous. While losing a lot of his memories didn't bother him too much, a lot of the details of his in-progress stories have become very fuzzy. This has left him frustrated and eager to find new sources of inspiration, usually at the expense of all else.

Backstory: Much of Arthek's early life is lost to him. In fact, he's fairly certain that Arthek Yarnspin isn't even his real name, but a pen name he used to hide his identity. What he does know is that he had a fascination with stories from a young age, how events from reality could be taken and twisted into something new and that in turn could inform and influence reality. It was this fascination that lead him want to tell his own tales, first through word of mouth and later in the form of novels. Of course, given the ban on entertainment this made his desire a little more difficult, hence why he had to take up a fake name and release his books through very discreet channels. However, he was able to make it work.

At least, until he was found out. He's not entirely sure how it happened, but he, his publisher and editor were all located and sentenced for their crimes. He doesn't remember what happened to them, but his repeat offenses - and refusal to change his ways - lead him to eventually being hanged. That should have been the end of it, but instead, fate had different plans in store: Arthek's spirit woke up in a strange place where the god of stories was waiting for him. The two ended up having a long conversation - the contents of which Arthek is also a little hazy on - but the general gist of it was that Arthek was getting a second chance at life, with the promise that he would keep telling stories. Arthek had no problem with this, of course, and agreed immediately, at which point he felt an odd sensation of some sort of power being passed from the god to himself. Then he blacked out, and when he woke up once more, he found himself in some hidden temple, surrounded by cloaked figures. Turns out, a bunch of his fans had managed to obtained his body and had performed a ritual to bring him back from the dead.

Now with a second chance of life, Arthek is ready to keep writing his tales. Sure, it hasn't been easy. Some of his in-progress tales are a bit fuzzy and he's suffered from frequent writer's block ever since, but he's sure that just the right kind of experiences and muses will help with that. During this time, he at some point caught wind of the Giggle Gang, entertainers like him who were doing their best to spread joy despite the restrictions, and has decided to base his next book on them. Now, all he needs is his own costume...

I'm the person the DM mentioned. I'm in the middle of making a Dwarven Fighter with a Gladiator background. (He was captured by goblins and made to fight in the goblin gladiator pits) I hope to have the sheet down today or tomorrow. The technical mechanics are done, just need to write up the background. Introducing Happy the Clown!

Name: Rockmar Granitehart

Race: Mountain Dwarf
Class: Fighter
Level: 1
Background: Gladiator

Personality: Grumpy. He rarely smiles and is often sarcastic. He tries to keep his emotions hidden away and people at distance from himself. He does smirk when he is performing however. His clown name is ‘Happy’ but he has a frown painted on his face.

Backstory: Rockmar has had a hard life. It started out happy enough. Rockmar was born into a small dwarven clan. The clan lived in a small outpost near the surface of the dwarven realms. They traded with the nearby human settlements. When Rockmar was still young, one day he pocketed a few gems that were to be traded with the humans. As fate would have it, on that same day, a large goblin war party raided Rockmar’s home outpost. Most of the dwarves were killed, but many were captured, like Rockmar.

Rockmar was forced to fight in the goblin’s gladiator pits. At first, he just fought against woodland creatures. But over time he became a better fighter. He would fight against bigger and meaner animals. But he also was forced to fight halflings and elves. There was the one time he smashed a pixie with his maul. The goblins laughed and laughed at that.

He grew stronger in the gladiator fights. Rockmar was good at it. He hated himself for it, but he enjoyed it. Fighting gave him a sense of self worth.He also learned to play the drums. The goblins loved it when he would play.

Perhaps Rockmar would have eventually died in the goblin camp. However, the Knights of the White Rose discovered the goblin camp and attacked. In the confusion, Rockmar escaped and ran off into the woods. He never says that he was rescued. He escaped.

Because Rockmar stole the ‘gems’ (really worthless glass bobbles) Rockmar feared to return to the dwarven realms. He made his way to the city where he now hides out with the Giggle Gang. Even if he calls them ‘the crazy ladies and that dead guy’.
