It seems that underrated games are a problem the gaming world will always suffer from. Even though these hidden gems may have a large following, they're often overshadowed by bigger, more advertised or well-known titles, or simply fail to properly create a following. But somehow, these games are always far better than their more popular kin, whether it's for actual gameplay (Cel Damage, Dark Cloud) or just for humor's sake (Dual Heroes, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon). While I was sitting here listening to the soundtrack of Kirby Air Ride (my all-time favorite underrated game) I decided to create a thread in OT about them.

It's not a Bravely Default thread, not an ESO thread, and certainly not a CoD thread. Just kick back and talk about a game (or several if you feel like it) that you feel deserves more credit than it ultimately got.
I get this hunch the first post will be about Dual Heroes, but I logically doubt it

Tecmo's Secret of the Stars

One of the most hated games of all time, from what I've seen. It really wasn't that bad. It had awesome music, and was somewhat cute to look at. You had an option to change your name at any point in the game. :D
Um, it was cartoony, and the game play was just fine for a JRPG. The problems were it had a few bugs, and there was a couple of particularly horrible spots in the story line where you didn't know you could go. It was still fun to play, had great music and nice graphics to look at.

But oh, the music. The music was great.

Someone else who's played Dark Cloud! :D That game had one of my favorite leveling (definitely favorite weapon upgrade) systems I've ever played, and the game itself was great, too (repetition aside...).

Aw man, I remember playing the first Dark Cloud for PS2. It was such a good game, but I unfortunately never got to finish it :/

Hmmm, I dunno if this genre is necessarily underrated, but a lot of people I know did not know about Dynasty warriors/Samurai Warriors.
Also, I really like the Tenchu series :3

TERA is also a really good, free, online MMO :3

Call of Duty was so underrated. Best game ever.

Seriously though, From Dust and Savage Moon. Both are download only games on the PSN, but they're great.

Rise of Legends. Game was mint, but in my opinion, unjustly passed off. Real shame, cause it had lots of potential too. As far as I know with my cuckoo-wizardy.

Way of the Samurai was it for me. Fixed number of days to figure out the local politics between two powerful groups, how you act gets you associated or targetted, and if you survive, you deal with the powederkeg... Ugh, I couldn't believe it wasn't more popular.

Funnily enough, despite the massive amount of sales COD gets, i'd say that in a way they are underrated due to all of the hate they get. The CoD games are fine, its only really been MW3's plot that sucked and Ghosts MP. And even then, Ghosts makes up for it with Extinction.

But anyway, underrated. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale comes to mind. It made mistakes, it felt rushed, some of the character decisions were dumb and some others were really needed but the foundations for a great game were there.

Usually when I do hear people talk of underrated games two come to mind, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Spec Ops: The Line. To me these games should get loads more attention than they've gotten. Wonderfully crafted stories, excellently detailed characters, and such rich and powerfully written narratives. Yeah both games have kept me up for nights on end, but I still hold them in high regard. Oh and they both had killer soundtracks.

Who here has ever heard of the Lufia series? One of the best two video games I have ever played. Ever.
They ruined it with crappy sequels.

Guess I'm about due to post about a couple. Custom Robo, and by extension, Custom Robo Arena.

Both are shooter-fighting games in which each player commands a tiny robot and dukes it out. With thousands of different ways to create your own custom robo (get it?) each player's unique death machine was just as one-of-a-kind to them as their strategy. I personally like pressuring the opponent and restricting their movements while leaping all over the place, but that's just me. That said, both games had amazing soundtracks, and Arena had a pretty decent story given the premise of the game. The GameCube's Custom Robo had an excellent story, on the other hand, with plenty of unique plot twists as the game moved onward and an imposing villain. I've actually been replaying Arena since last night, and plan to start over on the GameCube's Custom Robo again soon. Love that game.

It's a crying shame we don't have any new titles for that series, at least not that I'm aware of. With advances in gaming technology (specifically the Wii U & 3DS) a Custom Robo game could bring on a whole new level of depth and connection with your robo. Dreamers gotta dream, I guess.

An underrated and fairly recent game is Nier. It came out in 2010 and was kind of just forgotten by most people. One of the more infamous 'reviews' gave the game a zero because the reviewer couldn't follow the on screen icon to catch a fish. Nier is a hell of a game. It's made by Cavia who make games that exist to screw with the player And they also made a game that is kind of messed up story wise called Drakengard. Nier is a 'sequel' to Drakengard (and a much, much, much better one than Drakengard 2 since Nier was headed by the guy that headed Drakengard), in that it takes place after the fifth ending of Drakengard. Which, if you don't know what happens it is probably one of the most out of left field endings ever. It's also one of the biggest middle fingers to players in gaming. But that's a different story.

Nier is not the prettiest game and its combat isn't as in-depth as a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta (since Nier is an action RPG and such) but what it does have is a fantastic narrative, a fantastic soundtrack, and fantastic characters. Some of the Cavia dickery is present, mostly in the sidequests that get ridiculously fetch questy, but on the whole it's a great game that flew under the radar. It's a game where a second playthrough is required, not just because it's worth it, but because a second playthrough gives you more insight into the story. It's fantastic and worth checking out.

Also one of the characters is a sarcastic talking book who speaks in a stuffy exaggerated accent. And it is awesome.

Early Call of Duty is great, especially the WW II ones and the first Modern Warfare. After that they went pretty downhil though imo.

Salvation Prophecy. An entire space sim complete with planetary invasions and fleet actions between four factions, followed up with an invasion plot line, strange powers, and of course, a prophecy about the salvation of your faction, complete with two choices about how to end the game.

Made by one guy. If you liked Star Wars Battlefront you'd probably like Salvation Prophecy. :p

The World Ends With You! Easily one of the best DS games, great mechanics, great music, and great story, yet no one talks about it.

They're rated that way not for the games individually, but because we know what they're a sequel of and the COD games build so little off of their predecessors.
Where's it's clearly obvious that the minor changes they made would be more appropriate as updates or DLC rather than an entire other game.

I worship the DW series! You and ishtar are a common yet well-hidden species. The fanfare is just as exuberant as any other, just not as publicly widespread. The general titles had all of Gan Ning's bells and Zhen Ji's whistles regarding gameplay features, and for that reason I favoured those more than the Empire and Xtreme Legends editions - the sixth being an exception, I think the developers were still celebrating five's success with crack. What I can do without is the weapons interchange feature (I value character integrity), multi-faceted musou system and Lu Bu's moulin rouge eye shadow. Orochi Warriors introduced me to the Samurai series; a range I am yet to explore. It is considerably less popular than DW.

The single drop of childhood I've carried over, that I have no one to talk to about, is Perfect Dark on N64. I am aware that if you can't appreciate the 'OOC' type free roam at the menu screen, and awesome (for its time) storyline, it's mostly a carbon copy of 007 Goldeneye. Such is the logic of youth.
