Midcreek, a typical, peaceful town in California, has just been wiped off the map in a catastrophic gas explosion. To the knowledge of all media sources, all 3,421 residents of the town, mystifyingly, are now deceased.
All, as it seems, but several teenagers who must now flee from civilization with a price on their heads.

Plot
In the December of 2013, several Midcreek locals learnt of a political conspiracy that could potentially see the inprisonment of the President as well as several of those working under him. The group who had learnt this information did not share their data and continued to research in to the conspiracy, agreeing to only reveal their findings to the public when they were completely sure that they were correct. However, their research was never complete, as in early March, 2014, the government caught wind of their snooping. The President did not know what to do. He knew that only residents of Midcreek knew of the conspiracy, but he didn't know how many. The conclusion he came to? Kill them all. It was lucky for him that there was a large gas power station by the center of town.
It was the day of the High School Prom when it happened. The explosion went off and quickly obliterated the town center, including the High School and all the students and teachers inside. The government took all the precautions to make the flames spread to every corner of the town. If anyone survived, soldiers sent by the government would throw them back in to the flames. There was not, according to government records, a single survivor. 3,421 dead. Any residents who had recently left town were hunted down and researched - and if they looked a threat, they were assassinated. Any who had left some time ago were left to live, as they did not pose any threat. It was one of the largest disasters in American history. It was a huge talking point. The government were criticised, the gas company was criticised, everyone was criticised.
Ultimately, however, it seemed that the President's plan had failed, and there were survivors. Several, from the local High School, who, for whatever reason, had not turned up to the Prom and had instead had the luck to run in to a man that would save their life. These students, together, fled. Some attempted to find their family - they were killed. Some split off from the group after escaping the town - they were killed. Some attempted to get in to contact with anyone they knew out of town - they were killed. The half-a-dozen-or-so who did stick in the group ultimately survived, but only on constant run from the government, who would surely learn of their existence any time soon. Their lives would never be the same again, or so it seemed.

Opening Setting
It's dark. You're in the back of a van beside several other people of your age. Nobody is speaking. Around an hour ago, you and those around you escaped from your hometown, which is now no more after a huge gas explosion. You don't understand what is going on, but you heard someone mention that you were being hunted by soldiers, and you would die unless you got in the van. So you got in the van. You don't bother over-analysing the situation at hand, you are too focused on comprehending the deaths of everyone you ever knew that lived in the town of Midcreek, including your family. You've been told that if you try and contact anyone, they will be put in danger, and they will die.
The man driving the van took your phone away and snapped it, so you have no way of knowing where the hell you are or contact anyone anyway. After a while, the van stops, and the driver lets you out. He hands you and the teenagers around you several bags of supplies - sleeping equipment, food. It's enough to last a while. You realise you are in a forest somewhere in California. The man solemnly explains why he cannot stay and returns to the van before driving off in to the distance.
You have half a dozen people around you, but you've never felt so alone. You're stood on a dusty roadside in the heart of an expanse of trees with only standard supplies to keep you alive. You look around and realise that you will need to stick together if you want to survive. The path ahead will be rough indeed.
All, as it seems, but several teenagers who must now flee from civilization with a price on their heads.
