[Dimension 1]

It felt like it had been ages since Jennifer had set foot on Earth, her home planet.

She had met the Doctor when she was trying to write up about alien activity. And their paths crossed on the roof of the mall and then everything was sort of a blur. They did a lot of running and soon she discovered the man was not from Earth but an alien who traveled around in a blue box that happened to be bigger on the inside than the outside. They ended up going back in time to meet a young JK Rowling, they got stuck in a futuristic game show where everyone killed each other, they crash landed into a cave full of murderous statues and they even went undercover at a university to figure out who was controlling the students. And now she was back trying to sort out the mess that had become her life.

Jennifer had been writing about her imagined future with her ex and it had all wrapped up right after she and the Doctor narrowly escaped the Weeping Angels. A man had saved her life and it put things back into perspective. Sure, it was fun to fly around in the TARDIS but she had to remember what she had left behind. Who had left her behind. His name was Andrew and he had just suddenly up and left her without a word. It wasn’t until weeks later that she saw on Facebook of all places that he had moved to Germany without even explaining himself. It sent the brunette into a depressed state and now, over a year later, she was finally feeling more like herself. The passion was back but she felt needed some closure in order to move on and to prove to herself that he wasn’t the one, they didn’t have a future and that there was more in the universe for her.

So she had asked the leather clad alien to take her to Berlin so she could give someone something. It was vague but she didn’t want to bore him with details. If he wanted to know, he would ask or find out sooner or later. Much to her frustration, he ended up taking her a few months into her present when they met, and it was now February 14’th. Jennifer had stalked off to a café and downed a large glass of wine and some chocolate before she gathered up the courage to give Andrew a ring. They agreed to meet at the park nearby and hung up. Jen suddenly felt an avalanche of anxiety overcome her. Was this right? Should she be digging up the past? Did he even still care about her? Was he with someone else? Was that why he moved? She fiddled with her brown hair and looked to the time traveler sitting across from her who was oddly very quiet. “You’re covering the tab for this, it’s the least you can do for picking this particular date in history.” She informed him as she sat back in her chair.

The weather was holding up. The sky over them was overcast but that was the last thing on Jen’s mind. They were outside, the air was light and the traffic was nonexistent. Sitting in front of her was the massive stack of papers she would present to Andrew. It was how she always pictured them, their future wasn’t always rainbows and unicorns but she had written in to be realistic. She had seen them finishing school together and traveling, struggling to make ends meet, laugh, explore, get real jobs, see movies, get promotions, buy a flat together, become temporarily unemployed but still manage, have a family. And yet it was all nothing. It was just words rather than fantasies inside of her head, the ones that had haunted her after he had left. And this was meant to be her saying goodbye and letting go. She didn’t want to but she knew it was for her benefit. He had been selfish and now it was her turn. Perhaps.

Tapping her fingers on the piles of papers, she closed her eyes.

A sense of restlessness welled up inside of her and she decided they should kill some time by checking out the city before having to meet up in an hour. “Come on, I can’t sit here anymore.” She muttered. She grabbed her book and once the man had paid, they headed down the street to do some good old fashioned touring. She tried to take her mind off the impending collision between her and her ex and turned to the Doctor as they walked. “You know, if you want you can go off and do something else while I take care of this.” She said, feeling slightly bad that this might be pointless in his mind. But at the same time, support or company was welcome, no matter how little it was. Her annuity level was steadily climbing and she hadn’t a clue how to feel better. “Is there any sort of alien thing that can just make me not feel for an hour?” She asked him. Sure, alcohol worked on humans but she was already a bit sick from just one glass of red wine.

The Doctor was one who never liked to stick around, never saw comfort in repetition. He liked adventures, he liked to see new places, meet people and explore places where no one else dared to venture. He also liked having someone around him, he liked being able to share new and sometime frightening experiences. Seeing as he was the last of his kind, he often found himself feeling isolate, alone, almost ignored. But that was why he tried to seek out a companion. Someone he could teach and laugh with, someone who could remind him how good emotions were and how fun life could be. His life was long and there were periods where he didn’t have anyone or where death was all he saw. Those were the darker points of his long life, the war, the agony, the cowardice, everything like that he sought to run away from and forget.

And yet with his current companion, he was able to smile like nothing bad had ever happened.

He had met her by chance on Earth, as he usually found his companions he became so fond of, and enlisted her help to discover that an alien race was integrating itself into the culture. In turn, he decided to have her come along with him. They went to Venice and saved the day, they went to Mars, they even stumbled into the decaying grasps of the Daleks in the middle ages and they even fought off the Slitheen again. And now after all that running around, they were on another adventure but he had hoped that this time, there would be much less danger and more time to catch their breath. Considering how she nearly became a Dalek, he had decided to try and make up for that by taking her back in time to when her parents were just beginning to start a life together.

It was a nice thought, considering her parents were dead in her present timeline. The Doctor hoped that this would cheer her up rather than worsen her mood. It was nearly Christmas as they had stepped out of the TARDIS. By his calculations tomorrow would be Christmas Eve day and he figured it might be possible for Summer to spend some time with her parents while being careful of course. Crossing your own timeline was risky and the last thing that needed to happen was for Summer to inadvertently never be born in the future. It was complicated. Time was wibbly wobbly after all. He was taking a risk by going back in time but since Summer hadn’t been born yet he hoped that nothing would go wrong.

Sadly, in his long lifetime of running, wrong things tended to happen more than the right. He tried his best but he was only a Time Lord. It was a big burden to carry around, something he was reminded of when on Mars. He wanted to change a fixed point in time. He knew it had to happen but he changed it and then something inside of him changed. He changed history but in the big picture, he really hadn’t. He had thought he learned that the laws of time were now his to bend, no one could stop him. But then the doctor he had saved still died but this time by suicide rather than for the protection of Earth. And it was in that moment that he knew he could be dangerous if no one was there to pull him back from the edge of insanity. If Summer hadn’t been there, he was sure he could have ruined more than what had already.

“So we’re here.” He told Summer as they sat down at the small inn in the seaside port town. “And so are your parents.” He commented as tea was placed down between them. It was the beginning of the evening. The sun was just descending down across the ocean. The view from where they sat was lovely. They were out of the cold and enjoying the warmth. He looked down at his tea and frowned a little, “We have to be careful though. Tomorrow is when your parents get engaged.” He mentioned, remembering what she had told him about them but it wasn’t something she brought up often in the short amount of time they had been together. “Clearly for you that is a fixed point in time. It has to happen or there’s no you.” He said. “So we can meet them and chat but we just need to watch we say and do around them.” He knew this was a big opportunity for her and he wanted her to enjoy it.

He was really trying to make her happy, as opposed to scared or angry or worried.

Time Lords of Gallifrey. Sentinels of time and space. Once populated in the tens of billions there was now only one. One Time Lord in all of existence. The rest gone, perished in the infernal of the Great Time War. Billions of lives snuffed out in an instant leaving him as the Last Time Lord.

Humans were so silly really. Waging war like it was a game. They weren’t the only species to do so but they were one that he most frequently visited. Killing millions of their own kind to gain small scraps of land or power. It was trivial really. They considered some of their past battles as horrific and grand on the scale of things but comparatively, it was nothing. Nothing compared to what he had seen and endured. Maybe that was why he was so ticked off with people. Everyone going about their lives complaining about insignificant little details like a friend not talking to them or they haven’t had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Seemingly important but nothing compared to what he had gone through.
But that didn’t stop him from visiting them. From protecting them from unknown enemies; enemies that if the people of Earth knew about would strike terror and fear in the world. Perhaps it was the fact that they cared about the insignificant details. Perhaps it was their innocence and naivety that attracted him to them. No, nothing that happened to them would ever compare to his experience, but that was alright. It allowed him to once again see the universe as something other than a bloodbath or sorrow. As something new and wondrous, not scarred and troubled. Maybe that was why he allowed Jen to go with him. Or was it the fact she stubbornly wanted to come and wouldn’t leave him alone?

The Doctor smiled. Oh Jen. Despite his attempts she seemed to actually renew his faith in mankind. She gave him that door to new possibilities and beauty. Sure mankind was still a bunch of overgrown apes who did nothing better than go about their daily business working and eating chips. But that was alright because they had him to watch over them. Him to protect their tiny world. And he did. He battled weeping angels and Krillitanes, Nesting Consciousness and witches. He was used to it. The rage, the fight. Compared to the Time War it was child’s play. Not that he enjoyed it. No. He was so tired of the killing, the dying. Couldn’t just once, everybody live?

As he sat there, none of the inner turmoil made it to his face. Instead, wearing a cheeky grin he watched as Jen fingered the pile of papers she had put together. He had no idea what was in it but whatever it was it seemed to be troubling her. It was something for her ex-boyfriend, he figured. He didn’t know anything about the guy but if it was anything typical of human drama, the man was either a jerk or something petty had come up.

He smiled as Jen complained about the date. “T’wasn’t my fault.” He shot back with a grin. “You said boyfriend and the TARDIS has a mind of her own.” His northern accent, was pretty noticeable. He found it interesting that she wanted him to pay. He was a Time Lord not an ATM. He never carried money. Well… He reached into his pocket. He actually did have some surprisingly. Oh yes, the misunderstanding in Dover.

Standing when she stood, he gave all the money to the waiter. “Keep the change.” He said following Jen out the door. He grunted as she told him he could do something else. Right. He probably could but he was a bit worried as Jen wasn’t acting like herself. He chuckled when she asked him about not feeling. “Nope.” He said. “And even if I did, I wouldn’t give it to you. Feeling is a part of life. There might be times when life gets bad but you have to move on.” He paused, his expression saddening for just a second. “Like me.” He grinned.

Well… He had to move on. There was nothing he could do to change the past. Only moving forward and doing some good might ease him of the pain and sorrow he had seen and caused. Giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze he gave her a comforting look. “You’ll be alright. Eventually.” He grinned again.

The sweet smell of the cool sea air. It was something that brought back quite a few memories; some good, some bad. But this was home. Though some things were different, they did go back in time, not much had changed over the years. The air was still cleaner than in London and it wasn’t as crowded either. Though it was only an hour and a half away from London, Summer hadn’t been here in years. She just never seemed to have time to return, especially as there was not much to return to. But sitting there in the little inn she was glad they returned even for just a bit. It seemed so quiet compared to what she had been doing lately.

It seemed that the past few adventures with the Doctor she always seemed to get into trouble. What started as a simple photograph assignment for work turned into an adventure unlike she had ever had. Slitheen, vampire-ish creatures, crazy Daleks… She shuddered. As they had walked toward the little inn, she discretely glanced at the Doctor. The tall man didn’t look much like someone from another planet. Anyone looking at him would assume he was probably from Britain, possibly even narrow down to around Scotland area, not that he had a strong accent. She glanced away. Why he had taken her originally, she could only guess. It couldn’t be her looks or intelligence. And it definitely wasn’t her good judge of character. The image of the Slitheen she talked him into leaving came back to her. Yeah, that was a dumb idea.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go with him. Shoot, even with all the trouble she seemed to get into, she would gladly continue. The ability to travel to other places, other times, alone was worth the near death experiences she had already been through. She just wondered if he felt the same way.

They entered an inn and sat down. Though set up as a place for travelers the place had a nice tea shop which brought in many a local during the day. Summer listened as the Doctor explained how careful they had to be. He had mentioned earlier that they were going to visit her parents. Had it been the wistfulness in her tone when they spoke of where she had grown up or the fact that he was going to take her home and was going to use this as a way to break the news slowly to her. She didn’t blame him. She seemed like a magnet for trouble. Why would he still want her around?

She took a drink of her tea. The warm liquid brought a slight smile to her face. She used to come here as a young child with her mother. She looked at the Doctor. How had he known? Or did he just stop here because it was a convenient place to drink tea?

Setting the cup down, she placed her hands in her lap. “I’ll be careful.” She told him seriously as he finished. The thought of seeing her parents both excited and frightened her. Excited because though it had been a good eight year or so, she still missed them. Frightened on the fact that one slipup and she would terminate her own existence. She frowned thoughtfully. Would she slowly fade away or just flash, disappear? Whatever the case, it was something that she would be extremely careful on.

She looked back outside. She wondered where her parents were at this very moment. She knew they both lived in Dover. Her father had been working on his degree at the local university while he worked graveyard at the docks. Her mother, taking a few classes on art worked at a local establishment as a waitress, though Summer wasn’t sure which. She looked at the Doctor. Did he have an idea or where they just going to wonder around?

“Thanks for bringing me here.” She told him, realizing she hadn’t said much after he first informed her they were coming. She glanced at her tea. “I haven’t seen my parents in eight years.” She stated quietly. She swallowed and pushed her emotions down. Why had she said that? She didn’t talk much about herself to others. Even her mates back at home, assuming they still would talk to her if she got back as she had left them unspoken for a year, didn’t know much about her past. They didn’t know that when the news that her parents had been killed in a car crash came, the then seventeen year old felt as if she was a small child, alone and afraid.

Clearing her throat, she gave an awkward smile and looked at the Doctor. “So, should we hang out here or wander around looking for them?” She asked, pushing forward. “My mother took me here as a child so she was familiar with it but I’m not sure when she first started coming.” Honestly, she didn't know what she would say once she saw her parents. She would just pretend to be some stranger and say hi. Nothing major. Nothing stupid.

She tried not to roll her eyes but couldn't help herself when the Doctor said that feeling was part of life. Yeah, she knew that. But still feeling like crap wasn't a great experience and not when it was only getting worse. If he couldn't help her, she didn't see a point in him sticking around. Though she more thought about it, there was something different about the Doctor. Had something happened after they got out of the labyrinthine. Sure, a lot of people did die and their vacation had been unexpectedly cut short but she wasn't sure what was wrong with him? Then again, worrying about someone else's troubles was a lot easier than dwelling on your own. Jen let out a sigh and shook her head. It didn't seem like he was alright and she wasn't feeling like pretending she was either.

So what could two people do when they were down on their luck?

Well drinking came to mind but Jen didn't think that was a wise move. When she was upset she did like to turn to writing or reading. But then she wasn't sure what the Doctor did when he was upset. Was the best solution for them to just wander the foreign city and just try not to think about the day at hand. As they slowed at a crosswalk, Jen looked and saw a couple, clearly in love, holding hands and being overall, overly into one another. "Oh god, kill me now." She muttered and resisted making a gagging noise. The last thing Jen wanted right now was more romance. They crossed the intersection and she leaned back, slipping her arms behind her head. "You don't seem like yourself. I mean ever since we escaped that ship inside the cavern...everything okay?"

While her mind had been distracted by the danger and self sacrifice of those they worked with, she had a distraction of things being put into perspective which had pushed her to finishing her novelization. Now that it was done, there wasn't anything left to do but to take into account everything that she had been through ever since she met the alien from outer space. A lot had happened, sure but then again, not much in terms of them getting to know each other. Maybe the Doctor wasn't acting weird at all. After all, when she first met him, he didn't really want to make any new friends. Of course he ran around fighting aliens and saving the day, so she could see why having a companion might complicate things.

"Sorry I got kinda mad at you, I guess it's not your fault it's Valentines Day." Jen reconsidered begrudgingly. Well, she was a little skeptical that the TARDIS had a mind of its own, because if the Doctor really didn't want to go somewhere, well she wanted to believe it would listen to him. Jen brushed that thought aside as they continued down the sidewalk aimlessly. "This is just really hard for me and I've dreamed about doing this for a long time and now that the moment is right in front me I don't know what to do. This scenario played out so much and you weren't in any of them. I mean well...crap. Sorry." She blamed the wine for her incoherent babbling. "I should be thanking you." She muttered.

Her heart was heavy but she wanted to believe that this final gesture, this final encounter would fix everything. But deep down, she didn't think it would. The past couldn't be rewritten, despite the fact she had someone next to her who did in fact have a real time machine. And she didn't think she could ask the Doctor to go back and change Andrew from leaving. And if he was going to leave, maybe it was better they don't stay together. Of course in her mind, he never did. She had it tucked safely in her small pack on her back which left her hands free to play with her brown hair. "You think there's any way we can kinda just go and come back in twenty minutes?" She asked him, pouting a little. She couldn't help but get cold feet. It would be about a year since they were face to face.

"Maybe this was a mistake...I shouldn't have asked you to do this..."

The sea could be a very peaceful place.

He had been so many places where a sea could be many different things. He had been to a planet where the sea was inhabited by mermaids. Of course they not friendly and didn't take kindly to those who lived on the land but sometimes species couldn't coexist. And then the Doctor had been to a place called the Dead Sea but rather than be compared to the one on Earth, this one was filled with rotting muck which did kill you, hence the name. He had then been to one where the sea was in fact a light shade of yellow and it was like that due to a certain chemical found on the planet. The land then happened to be dark red. It looked interesting from far away, not his favorite color scheme but who was he to judge? The planet's people didn't seem to mind and he was happy to go back and visit them soon.

It was rare for him to find a place that could actually welcome him with open arms.

The Doctor had accumulated several enemies over his long lifetime. He had some debts which he could perhaps call upon but he knew more people wanted him dead, than to help keep him alive. The Doctor didn't mind carrying such a burden. He did his best to help people, look after Earth, but in his wake there was destruction and death. Despite his efforts, he was never able to forget the countless innocent lives that had perished because of him. The universe wasn't black and white though. It wasn't just gray either, it was colorful thanks to a large spectrum. And usually he could put on a smile and pretend that his name didn't strike fear in the heart of civilizations.

Still, his mind was old and contained plenty of hardened memories of death and betrayal and loss. The Doctor did his best to enjoy a slow day in which hardships weren't as present. And he hoped that his gesture towards his newest companion could instil some faith and restore some balance to their relationship. It wasn't like they'd find danger in such a quiet little town. Of course when the Doctor thought such things, the opposite tended to happen, such was the Time Lord's luck. Summer soon spoke up and thanked him for bringing her, he smiled brightly, glad to have been able to help. Of course he wouldn't know if he did help until the end product. A Time Lord's mind worked so many possibilities after all.

"You're welcome, Summer." He said proudly as he brought his cup of tea up to his nose and inhaled deeply. Tea was such a simple pleasure. Maybe tea was one of the reasons why he frequented the UK so often. The man took a drink and settled back, he didn't have much of a plan. He usually let things sort themselves out. He didn't think it was smart to ask around for her parents, that might muck things up. Then Summer muttered a sad statement but he didn't say anything about it as she smiled and asked what they should do. He gave a shrugged. "I dunno, don't really have a plan to be quite honest." The Doctor said plainly.

There really wasn't a handbook he could download that could help in such a delicate situation. "I suppose we can just enjoy our tea and see what unfolds." He smiled and took another drink. "Our plans our open, if you'd like to show me around, that's alright with me." He said to Summer. This was for her, and he thought as such that she might like to take the reigns. Sure, exploring the land could be fun but he had a feeling that if he went out and poked around with his sonic screwdriver, he might end up attracting trouble, or Summer might and after the wild mess of events, he would like to avoid trouble if possible. Not to mention this was important to Summer, so if they kept a low profile, it might be for the better. "For the middle of winter, the weather's not bad." He commented.

Perhaps it was the close experience with death that made her seem so reflective. After they had left the planet far behind, she had spent a long time in her room aboard the TARDIS writing, reflecting. Personally, he would rather run than look back. There was too much behind him and to dwell on it would bring back to many things he would rather avoid. However, kudos to Jen as she was able to move forward. When she wanted to meet her ex, he had no objections. Apparently, her disgust for a few humans kissing was brought on by her lack of love life. Though he personally didn’t have too much experience, he did not that humans were a bit annoyed when someone else was enjoying something they wanted. Either that or she just was disgusted with it in general. There were some people like that.

Hands in his jacket pockets, he ignored the slight chill and walked alongside Jen. When she inquired on how he was doing, instead of giving her a cheeky grin, he just looked ahead. She was the one who had faced death in the face with the angels and came out on top. True, his life was just as threatened, but after so many years, troubles, and threats it didn’t faze him as much. Besides, there were times he wouldn’t have minded death. Alone, the last of his kind, sometimes it was just too much. Not that the angels would have killed him. They would have just sent him back in time and feasted on the TARDIS. No. Despite his pain he was not going to give up on life yet. He had a lot of making up to do. Realizing he still hadn’t answered he turned to respond but she continued talking about Valentine’s Day. Content to leave the previous conversation alone, the Doctor just listened.

“I’m staying right here.” He looked at her seriously as she tried to talk herself back out of it. “You faced Weeping Angels.” He told her, matter-of-fact, no impish grin on his face. “You’ll be fine. I doubt he’s as bad as them.” He informed her, a slight twinkle in his eye. He felt bad for her. Facing one’s fears took guts. There were things he never wanted to go back and face. However, he did not want her to let it haunt her for the rest of her life. If she could deal with it and move on, then it will be better for her. “Just think, in a few days, you’ll be done. You can move on and not have to worry about what he thinks or cares.” Well, technically, she probably would. But, that was not the point. He was attempting to be a bit encouraging. “You’ll be glad you got this off your chest.” He told her. “Some things shouldn’t be cared for a long time.”
He looked off in the distance. Even if he wanted to go back, there was nothing he could do. There was no one he could apologize too, no one who would forgive him for his the choice he had to make. No, in his case, running was always better. Especially, as there was no one to go back to. He smiled at Jen. “I’ll be right here giving you support.” He promised.

Though it was curious why her boyfriend had left her and she hadn’t gone after the man. She was pretty determined to follow him when he showed up in her life investigating the plastics. The Doctor smiled. Just for her to go get her stuff, expecting him to stay had been difficult. There had been something in her eyes when she demanding he wait and not take off. Had the boyfriend leaving brought out her determination? Would things have been different if she had gone after the boyfriend or did not go after him?

The Doctor shook his head. He was glad he waited. He was glad she came with him. He grinned at her inquisitive look. “Just remembering when I first meet you. You were fairly determined to go with me even when I was pushing you off.” He nodded at her serious now. “If you can push your way to come with me without me taking off, you can talk to this fellow of yours. And you know what? If he doesn’t like what you say, to heck with it. He doesn’t deserve you. He doesn’t deserve your following up on him.” Though serious, he hoped she took it as encouragement. She could easily take it the other way and just leave. Or get annoyed with him, making her feel worse.

He shrugged. Humans were so complicated sometimes. But then again, that’s why he enjoyed them so much. He looked forward again, determined. Whatever happened, he was going to stay by her side. He fought ‘gods’ and demons. Ice warriors and angels. What a was an ex-boyfriend compared to them?
[Dimension 2]
Summer smiled, not really surprised at the fact he didn’t have a plan. He seemed to be the type to go with the flow. The trip to Venice showed that. Though, in no way did that mean he couldn’t come up with a plan or knew what he was doing. Though he might not have one right away, he always came up with something and she never had to worry about him failing her. Even on Mars, when she had given up all hope of rescue, he had returned. Returned to her and kept her safe. Even against the Daleks, he came and got her out. No, he might not always have a plan but when something was needed, he knew what to do.

She smiled. “Enjoying our tea sounds fine with me.” She stated. “Then I can show you around. Dover’s such a beautiful place. And the weather is perfect for a tour.” Her eyes lit up at the thought of visiting her hometown again and taking in the sights. For some reason, she wanted to show the Doctor around, see what he thought. She hoped he approved of her town, though in reality it probably wouldn’t faze him as much. He was a time traveler. He could go anywhere in time and space and see exotic placed. Dover…well it was just a small harbor town that really only had significance because she grew up there.
In reality, she was a bit surprised at her boldness. It took some time before she warmed up to someone. And even her mates back in London hadn’t heard much about her hometown. She liked to keep things close. But then again, going through life and death experiences several times with someone could make a difference. Not to mention he did seem interested. Thankfully, the waitress coming up saved her from any awkwardness. Setting a plate of warm bread in front of them the waitress, straightened. “Molly had to leave so I’ll be taking care of you.” She stated. “If you need anything, just holler. My name’s Mabel.”

Summer’s head came up. The waitress… It was her. Younger than Summer had ever seen. The young college aged waitress smiled and left, not catching Summer’s surprised look. “That’s her.” Summer whispered a bit stunned. All of a sudden she felt a bit conspicuous. Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea after all. What if she gave something away? What if something slipped? Memories of her childhood flew through her mind. Though the woman she remembered and the one she had seen were different ages, there was no doubt that they were the same woman. She was so beautiful. So much more than Summer. She had taken more after her Father than her mother. She looked over, conscious the Doctor was observing her. “Maybe we should leave.” She said a bit flustered. “I’ll probably mess something up. Say something I’m not supposed to.”

The Doctor’s touch on her hand calmed her slightly. Listening she composed herself. “You’re right. Sorry. I’m just… I wasn’t actually expecting her that quickly and I didn’t think far enough ahead on what I would actually do or say.”

It made sense though her Mother worked her. She had known all the staff and she did say it was her favorite place in town when they frequently stopped there when she was a child. Now some of the little jokes she missed as a kid made sense. The teasing, telling her mother she would fit right in. How she could probably run the place herself… It made some sense now. She looked at the Doctor. “So now what? I don’t know where to begin.”

When he said he was staying with her, Jen couldn't help but find a tug of a smile pulling at her lips. She glanced down at her shoes and found herself really thankful for having him beside her. He said that in a few days it would be behind her. She nodded and looked back up as they walked along the sidewalk. "Yeah, I guess so." It was easy to say but hard to believe in. Jennifer knew he was doing his best and it really was appreciated. For all that he did for everyone in the universe, she couldn't help but wonder if he got the thanks he deserved. Being thanked did make a difference. Knowing that you were worth something to someone, to anyone really. "Thanks." She looked to the Doctor when he assured her that he'd be giving her support.

Then silence fell over them as they stopped neared a bookstore, something that was one of her known weaknesses. She tilted her head toward him as he just explained that he was thinking about when they first met. "Oh yeah? Sorry I was kind of a pillock when we first met." She told him. He then told her that if she could pester him and not let him leave without her, she could face her ex and if he didn't really care then he didn't really matter anyway. Jen grinned a little. He had a point. "Yeah, you're right. As always." She smacked his arm playfully and wandered into the bookstore. They spent the rest of the hour looking through books. Even ones in German or French of Italian interested Jennifer, and the genre didn't matter either. Be it cars, cooking or even crocheting.

Maybe if she knew more, maybe she could be useful to the Doctor. She didn't want their adventures to end, she wanted to be able to keep up with him. That and she just loved reading about anything and anyone. The girl checked her phone and saw it was about time to go and find her white whale. She grabbed the Doctor's hand and pulled him out of the shop. "Guess it's now or never huh?" She smiled nervously and jogged two blocks up to the park where they would be meeting. Once there, she let go of his hand and dug out her book. "You can hang back if you want, I don't...I don't really-" A tapping on her shoulder cut her off and she turned to see Andrew. Now she wasn't sure if she wanted to smack him and ask questions later or kick him and ask questions later.

Instead, she found him hugging her, and well she couldn't help but return the warm gesture. "You came, part of me didn't think you would." Jen muttered and pulled back and handed him the pack of papers. "I wrote this for um you, well for me mostly but then i thought you needed to take a look and see what you missed out on." She quickly said. Andrew took it and looked to the Doctor and before he could ask, Jen cut him off. "Ah, he's the Doctor, super awesome alien guy, took me in here in a blue spaceship that doesn't look like what you're thinking." She smiled. "And we go on adventures and it's awesome and I made him bring me here because nearly dying gave me the push to finish our story once and for all and I came here ready to punch you and yell at you but I don't know anymore."

"I'm not here to get together again or anything cliche like that, And it's not my fault it's Valentines Day and apparently it's not his either even though he pilots the ship." She gestured to the Doctor with a bit of annoyance. "But I just want to know why. I want to know why you left and why I wasn't making you as happy as you made me." She said and realized she was shaking slightly. "I was excited and nervous and scared to meet you after so long-and angry too. You broke my heart and I shouldn't have had to come here to get an explanation, let alone an apology. I know I'm coming out of nowhere here but, you're more in the wrong than I am so just tell me why and I'll move on...I need to move on because you got a head start and that's not fair."

"I can't really explain why..." Andrew said. "I wasn't thinking about it weeks in advance, there wasn't another girl, nothing major happened in my life. I just woke and thought I'd go somewhere else." He sighed. "I'm sorr-"

"No! It's too late for that!" She cut him off. "You can't just decide to go somewhere and not take me with you. Not when we had something really great." She found herself beginning to cry. "You can't even justify why you left, are you insane? Do you realize you killed me? You killed me and broke me and you didn't care enough to say goodbye or where you were even going. You know what, you don't deserve my story. You don't deserve the happy ending I gave us!" She grabbed it from Andrew and marched over to the nearest trash bin and threw it in. "That's exactly what you did to me, someone you loved. Someone who loved you, who would have done anything for you!" She wiped her eyes. "You threw me away and you need to fix the damage."

"This was a mistake..." Andrew sighed and looked off. "I shouldn't have agreed to meet you."

"It breaks my heart all over again to see you're not the man I fell in love with, so thank you, for showing me how lucky I was that I let you get away so easily. I honestly wish you were happy but...I'm done. My heart really can't do it anymore, it can't keep holding on because my mind really knows better..." She walked back over to him. "But this time, I have to go and I don't need to tell you a damn thing." Jen said and turned around, ready to go find someplace to finish crying.

"Jen, wait." Andrew said. "You deserved better. I know." He said to her. "I should have asked you to come, but I didn't."

"I'm here now but you can't ask me to stay." She muttered. The writer had planned it, had thought about it so much it rarely went the way it actually had, such is life. She was sure Andrew could have done better but maybe she had spent so much time romanticizing him that she didn't know the real Andrew anymore. She was confused and conflicted. She missed him but she didn't care anyone. And yet she did. She walked along until she found a large fountain with some benches around it. She sat down on one and sighed, rubbing her face with her hands. Their story was over, finally.

[Dimension 2]

As the Doctor peered down at his cup of tea, he couldn't help but note that he was already almost done with it. That wasn't good. He breathed in deeply and looked to see Summer was alright with his nonexistent plan to do anything. He would be more glad to know that she still had faith him, despite some of the mishaps. He and Summer had met and clicked, the last thing he wanted to do was add her name to the list of companions who had left or died. He couldn't stand to think that he had met another person who's life he would someday ruin. So he wanted to try and make up for what had happened. He wasn't sure if this was the proper way to go about doing it but he was trying and wasn't that enough for now?

The Doctor took another drink and set his cup down. He could sense Summer was getting apprehensive about their situation but he wasn't sure what to do about it. He had been going back and forth about it being a good idea and the more she became uncertain, the more he would in turn feel the same. "Dover seems nice but it's a bit late for a tour, not that this place strikes me as one that would get unruly and restless come nightfall." He mentioned. He then fell silent once more as Summer seemed to get stuck in her own thought pool. He took a bit of the bread set between them and pulled off a small bit off and tasted it. It was good. As a waitress approached him, he smiled to her. "Hello." he greeted and nudged his empty tea cup towards her.

"I've love a refill whenever you get the chance." He said to her. Mabel took it and left. It was then that Summer spoke up and said that was her mother. "Oh!" He laughed a little. "Well it makes sense to me that you two might cross paths sooner or later, you're the same blood after all." He mused and looked from the waitress who was minding another table and then looked to Summer who was growing uncertain about their situation. He reached over and patted her hand gently. "Now come on, if I take us somewhere else now, we'll never be able to come back to this point in time. If you really don't want to be here, we can leave but you'll probably always wonder what might have been if you stuck around. You'll be fine." He tried to assure her.

But he wasn't about to twist her arm and force her to interact with her parents. It was risky but he saw no harm if Summer wasn't even conceived yet. And he didn't think Mabel looked pregnant so he thought they were safe for the time being. Summer once again tossed him the question of what they could do. He rolled his eyes a little but smiled. She still didn't get it. "This is up to you. What we do is in your hands. I'm just passing through, you know the town and the people better than I do. We can go find a place to stay or head back to the TARDIS." He said to her. By now the sunset was over and town was bathed in a deep navy blue.

"Excuse me," Mabel set down the freshly brewed cup of tea for the Doctor. "I couldn't help but overhear you two are a little lost."

"Oh yes, we just arrived and are unsure of how to spend the next few days." The Doctor said. "Any ideas?"

"Well you two shouldn't be alone for the holidays, you are welcomed to come to my house tomorrow night for a party. My house is right down this road, the one with the big wreath and bells on the door handle." She said. "You and your friend can even stay in the lodge next door, if you tell them I sent you I am sure they'd give you a good deal." Mabel smiled to them and headed off. The Doctor grinned wide and took the cup of tea between his hands once again. It sounded like a good plan to him so why not? They could pop in if Summer wanted. It seemed like a good opportunity to blend in and mingle with everyone without standing out or messing up with certain events.

After he took a few drinks, he set his cup down and leaned over towards Summer, "So would you like to go tomorrow?" He asked her. He didn't want to force her but this was an opportunity for her see her mother and even talk to her. And he had a feeling it was something Summer not only wanted to do but needed to do. He stood up and set down some money and looked around the small establishment. It had been so long since he had actually taken the time to slow down. He was usually running and talking and seeing places and meeting people and yet of all places at the time, he was in Dover. It was nearly Christmas and he was in Dover with Summer and somehow it felt nice, weird but nice.

The Doctor was tempted to speak to Mabel himself but he didn't think that would be proper. If he did get a chance to tell her anything, it would be that she had a fine daughter and that he would do his best to look after her. But he couldn't because that probably alarm her and he didn't want to risk it. He headed out when Summer was ready to go. It seemed like they could walk around for a little bit before they decided where they would actually stay. He usually had a preference for the TARDIS but if Summer wanted to stay at the lodge, he wouldn't complain. It was her gift after all and if it would make her happy, why not?

They walked around as Summer pointed out things she could remember about the various places. He nodded and pocketed his hands, finding that he didn't need his long coat, so he had slung it through his arms as they wandered about. The ocean was a nice calming sound to hear. He could recall several places he had visited which had interesting bodies of water. Some were mythical while others were frightening. But thankfully his favorite planet had not been overly polluted yet so he would enjoy it. "Since it's Christmas, well tomorrow, do I have to get you something?" He smiled to her a bit playfully. "After all this time I still can't stop for humans. Zygons yes, humans, eh no so much." He made a bit of a face. Of course he'd find something to bring to the party tomorrow, should Summer decide to go.

It was only right, after all. He had to be a good guest.

The Doctor grinned cheekily. “Of course I’m right. Oy!” He exclaimed as she hit his arm playfully. Smiling, he took it good naturally. It was good to have a companion again. Someone who could keep him on his toes and help him remember the good in life. He had gone so long without a companion he had forgotten the benefits of having one. They helped keep your mind off of stuff you really did not want to remember. He smiled. Jen was good in that way. Little did she know that her being a ‘pillock’ as she called herself and forcing herself on him, helped him. Sure, he probably would have continued on without a companion for who knows how long, saving the world. But it just wasn’t the same.

As they browsed through the bookstore, the Doctor scanned the books, while keeping an eye on Jen. She didn’t look like she was going to use this as an excuse to get out of meeting her ex. No. He didn’t believe that. Not after she seemed to brighten up when he gave her his little speech. No, it was probably just because she was fascinated with books and needed to kill a little time before the meeting. Watching her look through the books, the Doctor made a mental note to show her the extensive library on the TARDIS. Of course, he wouldn’t show her the Gallifrey one. No. That was locked safely away. No one but him could enter. He had coded it so that none could enter. There were too many secrets that should never be reveled in there. No. He would show her the other extensive library. The one with books from almost every civilization and time period. He frowned. Maybe that wouldn’t be a good idea. He had to stir her away from too much knowledge of the future. Sure he could take her through all of time and space but he normally avoided the major capsules that could hinder her if she ever came back to earth.

Before he realized it, Jen had grabbed his hand and was taking him out of the bookstore. This was a first. Grinning at the irony, he just followed along, knowing that the next few moments was going to be very important to her. Pausing in the park, he listened as she started to tell him to wait. However, a young man came up and interrupted before she could finish. Glancing him over, the Doctor crossed his arms unimpressed. If this bloke dumped Jen then he wasn’t going to get any support from him. However, he did grin and give a small wave when he was introduced. “Hello.”

He could tell that the young man was a bit confused as she talked about him being an alien and traveling in a blue spaceship. Yeah, he saw that a lot. People would think he was crazy. However, Jen didn’t give the young man much time to ask about it as she just rambled on, talking to him. It was apparent that she had been thinking about this for some time and she just needed to get it off her chest. He smiled, as the young man was once again cut off. He should just keep his trap shut and wait until her steam ran out. That was the best thing to do. Otherwise, it wouldn’t matter.

As her words flowed out, the Doctor’s expression grew grimmer. There were times he disliked humans. Well not all of them. But a lot were completely selfish. They didn’t care what their actions did to others. This man’s casual betrayal of someone that was supposed to be dear to him irked the Doctor. Especially considering the man had no excuse and was reconsidering even coming. As Jen finished up and turned to walk toward the fountain, the Doctor stepped forward. “Run along, Drew boy. Go back to your meaningless life.” Whether it was his threating demeanor or the fact that the kid didn’t want to bother with anymore confrontation, the boy left.
The Doctor waited a few seconds, watching him go before heading over to Jen. Sitting down, he said nothing, just sat there.

There were times that words and actions were needed. Times were people needed to hear the truth and words of comfort. Some people preferred to hear lies that everything is better they just need to forget and move on. Not that it would help. However, there were other times when it was better not to say anything. When words would only get in the way. Sitting there, the Doctor believed now was that time – at least for the moment. He sat there letting Jen slowly say goodbye to that part of her life. His silence, hopefully her comfort. Staring at the fountain, he watched as the fountain he watched as the water fell into the pound only to be pulled back up and reused. A few other people walked around the park, none taking a second glance at the pair of them.

After a few moments of silence, the Doctor finally spoke. “Some people say that it goes away. That life will move on and this will soon be a passin’ memory.” He glanced over at her. “But there will always be a part of you that will remember this. That will feel the pain you feel today.” He shrugged. “And that’s alright. It’s part of life. Life wouldn’t be anything if there wasn’t sorrow in it. Some of the greatest triumphs and achievements come from sorrow and failure. Look at Edison.” He said waving to a street lamp. “It took him over ten thousand tries to create the light bulb. In fact, one reporter asked him what it felt like to fail. You know what he said? ‘Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp’.” The Doctor looked at Jen. “You can take your pain and anger and nurse it and let it turn into bitterness. I’ve seen it. It’s not easy to live with.” He frowned slightly. “Or you can let it help you grow. Make you into someone better, someone stronger.”

He looked away. It had been some time since he comforted someone. “You did the right thing.” He told her looking over at her. “If you hadn’t you would have regretted it.” He smiled, not his cheeky grin, just a plain old smile. “I’m proud of you.”
[Dimension 2]
Summer appreciated the Doctor’s kindness. He was leaving it up to her. Letting her decide if she wanted to continue or head back to the TARDIS and go somewhere else. Before she could decide, her mother came back. A bit shy around the younger version of her mother, Summer just listened as the Doctor and her discussed what to do for the next few days. When her mother offered the cabin, Summer ducked her head to hide her smile. That was so like her. It didn’t matter if they were strangers. Mabel Fox, or Mabel Jones as was now, had never met a stranger. Another thing that had somehow missed her daughter.

As Mabel left, Summer took a drink thinking on the offer. She remembered the lodge. Shortly after her parents married, they had purchased it as their new home. She had many a found memory until it burned down when she was ten. She glanced up as the Doctor inquired if she would like to go to the party. Frowning thoughtfully, Summer didn’t reply right away. Instead, she waited for the Doctor to pay and then followed him outside. She didn’t see him get the key from Mabel but then again her mind was still thinking on the possibilities of staying or not.

As they walked, the Doctor didn’t pressure her. For that she was grateful. Most people, including an ex-boyfriend or two try to rush her when it came to making decisions. You think to slow. One friend had complained. It wasn’t that she thought slow, she just liked to take her time in deciding certain things. The decision to go or stay was important to her. If she left, there might never be a chance to come back. However, did she really want to risk sticking around? Did she have the guts to take this opportunity provided to her?

She didn’t say much as they walked. Occasionally as they passed something she recognized, she pointed it out to the Doctor. “Dad and I used to fish over there.” She told him. Or, “Mrs. Henderson used to live there. She used to make the awfullest tea.” She smiled at the memory. “But Mom said I had to be polite and drink it.” She made a face. “However, her biscuits were excellent and helped cover the taste.”

It was nice really. Recalling all the old places. The places she used to play. The alley she got into a fight with Tommy Sanders, a bully from school. Sure she got some bruises and her mother nearly threw a fit but she had given that kid a nice bloody nose and he never bothered her again. She smiled. Sometimes she wondered what her mother thought of her. Her looks, her introverted personality, and tomboyish attitude all came from her father. She couldn’t really think of anything major she got from her mother except for her love of tea.

The Doctor spoke up talking about presents and Summer glanced over at him. Presents? She had forgotten that tomorrow was Christmas. Just her luck. She had nothing really to give him. What did someone give a time traveler anyway? She frowned. What was a Zygon? She shook her head. “No. I don’t need anything.” She gave him a small smile. “This is a gift in of itself.” She told him.

Pausing at the bay she looked out over the water. Her mind finally deciding. “I’d like to go.” She told him looking over. His expression, though a bit guarded, seemed a bit down. She chuckled as she realized how it sounded. “Go to the party tomorrow.” She told him. Her smile faded and she glanced out over the water. “That’s if you still want to.” Technically, it was his time machine. Also, he said he didn’t stop for humans. He was a time traveler. He could go anywhere in the universe. Why would he want to stay in Dover and go to a Christmas party? Glancing at him from the corner of her eye, Summer understood why. He wanted to. If it meant this much to her, then he would do it. Why he cared so much for her, she didn’t understand but she was glad he was doing it.

Even though she had her parents almost all her childhood, a lot of memories had slipped away. Just being her had brought some back. Maybe this party would help her get a better understanding of her parents. An outside perspective, now that she was an adult. She looked back at the Doctor. “Well, should we go tell her, we accept?” Her eyes searched his face. She felt relief as he grinned and gave his response. Heart light, Summer turned and walked with him back the way they had come. As they walked, she chuckled. She had never been a partygoer. To many people around. But here she was not only going, but actually looking forward to it. If only for the fact that she knew her parents would be there and that tomorrow would be the day her father would ask her mother to marry him.

She smiled. That was something she couldn’t wait to see.

[Dimension 1]

She ran a hand through her long brown hair and twisted strands around her cold fingers. It really wasn't fair. She had so much faith in him, he was so much worse than what she could recall. What happened? Something had to have happened. It made no sense to her. People didn't just change overnight but it was apparent that she wouldn't get the answer she deserved. And now it was supposedly done and over. Now what? She propped her elbow on the slender metal armrest of the bench and put her chin in her hand and sighed. The Doctor soon joined her but she really didn't feel like talking or being talked to, at the moment. There was silence but not a lot of it. And as predicted, he was doing his best to point out that this was just a tiny blimp on her whole life.

Not to her.

Not when she had fiercely believed that Andrew, the auburn haired boy with beautiful blue eyes, was someone she had really connected with. And now all it was pretty much gone and she was starting to doubt her very own memories. She listened to the Doctor talk about Edison's failures and how he just carried on anyway. Good for him, she wasn't an inventor, she was a very single person just bumbling around the world and if she couldn't count on her friends, who could she count on? She glanced over to him and sat up a bit more, yet still remained a bit slouched into the bench. "I actually don't know how I feel. I don't think I'm angry, I mean I was back there but...I don't think so, not anymore." She wasn't quite sure what to call how she was feeling.

Usually describing things and reading situations came naturally to her but now she found herself struggling to discern whether she was going to cry or scream. Jennifer was in turn, more mad at herself than her ex. "He's usually better than that." She told the Doctor, not sure why she felt the need to defend Andrew. But he was. And how he acted was completely out of character and she'd never know why and that really bothered her. "I mean there's pain yeah but...I'm kinda just...numb to it. I guess I saw this coming a while. Sure, not exactly but I figured I'd get here someday." She shrugged a little and looked up at the blue and white colored sky. Maybe part of her didn't want to appear as though she had poor judgement in people but she knew Andrew was a good person. What she didn't know was why he was so set on not being good to her so suddenly. She felt undeserving of it, to be honest.

She didn't deserve Andrew's misplaced grief. Jennifer looked back to the Doctor who gave her a smile, not one of boyish charisma or glee, but just a simple smile, and it looked good on him. "Thank you." She replied to him. "I really do appreciate your support." But the whole issue had been sort of resolved and it might be as good as it could get, so she wanted to move on and stop feeling so numb and stupid. "And in the end, we're all just humans. Drunk on the idea that love, only love could heal our brokenness." She said. "Christopher Poindexter said that, I always thought his last name was pretty cool in a geeky sort of way." Jen smiled a bit. "Well I guess, I'm using the term human more broadly here." She glanced to the Doctor. "Hmm...anyway I guess there's nothing else to do here, since I picked last, why don't you decide what we're doing next." She proposed.

It seemed since she was ready to go, so was the Doctor. They headed back to the TARDIS which wasn't far. "I wonder what I should write about now..." She shrugged and put her hands behind her head. "I guess I could write about traveling through time and space." She smiled a little though she had no idea how it would turn out. It could still be cool or entertaining at least, even if it was just for her. They stepped back into the TARDIS and she realized she couldn't go back at another point in try again, this was it. "Any moons on Neptune we could check out?" She grinned a little. "Or something like that."

[Dimension 2]

With things somewhat settled, the Doctor had a better feeling in terms how this visit back in the past would go. He had his doubts, clearly but so far, time was on their side and who was he to mess with that? As they wandered around Dover, Summer expressed tidbits of her life and what she could remember from the past, which was to them, in the future. The brown haired male was keen to just listen and absorb the information whenever it was provided. Summer had a lot on her mind and didn't want to misdirect her. This was important to her and whatever choice she made, he would understand and accept it. Humans could be unpredictable sorts, usually hearts filled with rage and confusion, rather than love and understanding. But they weren't all hopeless, many of them were carved into the Doctor's memory from all of his past lives.

And now Summer was making a place within his mind as well. Here he was, a powerful Time Lord, the last of his kind, and he was wandering around the dark bowels of Dover. It was a bit comedic but in a heartwarming sort of way. He looked around and made notes of where places and landmarks were, just in case directions ever needed to come in handy. For someone who did a lot of running away, it was always key to know how to escape from an area. And he wanted there to be no danger in Dover, so he was also doing some recon, alongside taking in the small port town that Summer's parents inhabited. The girl said she didn't need anything, which made him nod. That was good, though he wasn't really serious because he hadn't a clue what would be appropriate and what wouldn't. The topic was thankfully kicked to the side.

As they neared a body of water, Summer stalled.

She said she'd like to go, he couldn't help but frown slightly. But then she mentioned that she'd like to go to the party. Well that was different. He nodded and stood beside her. Parties weren't something he frequented too often, for many reasons. Sometimes it was hard to find a reason to celebrate, sometimes he just didn't want to be around people, but he would go since it meant something to Summer. He headed back with Summer since she seemed eager to give a formal acceptance to the kind invitation. They stuck their head in and told Mabel they would be in attendance and once that was done, they headed back to the TARDIS to get some rest. Well, the Doctor didn't need to sleep so he just spent the next couple of hours tinkering in the control room, thinking about how Christmas Eve would turn out. He honestly hoped it would give Summer the closure she needed.

The next day, the Doctor decided after some research that a simple bottle of wine may be enough to bring to the party in exchange for the hospitality. And he had some stored away in one of the many rooms within the TARDIS. A few bottle had been gifted to him after he had saved the wife of a Frenchmen in the 1930s. When the sun settled once more over Dover, he and Summer met up and headed over to Mabel's house together. The Doctor had kept himself busy during the day and had hoped Summer had enjoyed some time on her own in the town. "I have a good feeling about this." He told her as they neared the small cottage which belonged to Summer's mother. He knocked and stood back with Summer, when it opened, he presented the bottle to a man who had opened the door. "Merry Christmas." The Doctor smiled. "I'm The Doctor, this my friend, Summer. Thank you for having us." He said as they were let in. Many people were in the living room, by a large fireplace, everyone seemed to be exchanging stories of the past year and hopes for the upcoming new one.

The Doctor gestured for Summer to sit down and he would follow. They found a place on the couch and the Doctor looked over at everyone. A thick scent of alcohol and beef and bread filled the area around them. It was very casual and seemed to include all sorts of people. Mabel approached them and gave them a wave. "That was my boyfriend who failed to introduce himself, he's not one for parties like this but it's a tradition I can't just let go of so he puts up with it." She smiled. "I hope you're enjoying Dover thus far."

"Oh yes, it's lovely." The Doctor nodded.

Universe 1:

The Doctor smiled as she talked about humans drunk on the idea of love. That they were. Everyone was obsessed with love. Most with the love of themselves, but some with the love for others. The question is, what kind of love was their idea? The Greeks had different words for love. Eros, Agape, Philia and Storge. Each one discussed a different aspect: spiritual, physical, mental and family affection. But now, most people looped everything under the title of love. From I love my dog and I love my parents to romantic feelings. The irony that the day was Valentine's Day did not escape him.

He glanced over at Jen as she suggested somewhere else. He grinned as he got the idea of where to go. It was peaceful, beautiful and it might help her broken heart. Not to mention that the solitude and serenity of the place might give her some ideas to continue writing. As they walked away from the park, the Doctor mentally marked which trash can she had tossed her book in. Though she might not want it now, there might come a day where she might actually want to go back and read it. Not to bring up old memories but just to reflect on what might have been. Either way, he would get it sometime in the future. Of course he would never open it, but at least it would be there if she ever wished to have it again.

Once inside the TARDIS, the Doctor looked over at her seriously. "Let's leave this Valentine's Day behind." He told her flipping a few switches and activating the TARDIS. His destination was Alterous Nine. Twin worlds orbited each other as they circled a G-class star. Though one of the planets was habitable the other one was not. And as the inhabitants of the system were still in the bronze age, there was no worry of traffic or tourism. At least not yet. He had gone far into the future and both worlds had been quickly populated. No. This was the best time to go. No buildings, no shops, and no one to bother them. He tried to remember the last time he had gone. It had been some time. Long before the war. Before the universe was thrown into chaos. Ah yes, he had gone on his fourth regeneration. He had taken his companion there to give them a bit of R&R after a hectic life and death experience. It was a nice place to visit.

Flipping a switch, he waited brought the TARDIS into real space again. As it materialized on the planet he grinned at Jen. "You'll love this place." He told her going over to the door. "And don't worry. No one to bother you with Valentine's treats." He declared, a wide smirk on his face. Stepping out of the TARDIS, he breathed in the clean, fresh air. Grass grew in all directions and the other planet was clearly visible in the sky. Some clouds blocked part of it, only adding to its beauty. At her gasp, he looked at Jen, happy to see that this place pleased her. "And no one to bother us." He informed her.

Walking along, his hands in his jacket, he watched as Jen surveyed the planet. There wasn't much trees in the area they landed but there was a lot of grass. A wild beast, similar to antelope back on earth, could be seen in the distance. Spotting them, it bounded away not used to strangers in its world. It was so serene. Peaceful. When was the last time that he had actually gone to a place just for some peace and quiet? Not in a long time. He was a man of action. A man constantly on the move. Besides, he had seen it all. Well, almost. Sometimes one did not fully appreciate the beauty unless there was someone else seeing it for the first time. That was why the Doctor had a companion. Well, that and he didn't like traveling alone. But having a companion always gave him a fresh look at things. Jen's appreciation and exclamation of the planet's beauty helped him it in a new light. Not just another planet, not just another location, but a place of beauty.

Walking along, it brought back memories of Gallifrey. Of the bright red grass. The orange sky. It had been a wondrous place before the Time War. Not that he stuck around there much. He was an adventurer. He had to travel. But he had always expected it to be there when he returned. He never dreamed that it would be destroyed.
Pushing the thoughts aside, he looked over at Jen. "So, was this a good idea or would you rather see the moons of Neptune?" He inquired.

After informing her mother that they were coming, which of course, Summer let the Doctor do it. She was still a bit shy on speaking to her parents. She did know she would have to eventually get the nerve, especially as she would be at the party and there would undoubtedly be questions. For a second she worried on what they would ask. Would they want to know where she was from? Who her parents were? Taking a deep breath, she calmed herself. No reason to worry about that now. They would figure something out if it arose. She followed the the Doctor back to the TARDIS to get some rest before the next day. In the room the Doctor had given her, Summer pulled out the photo of her parents. It was the only one she had left and was taken when she was seven. She smiled as she looked at the picture. No matter what happened tomorrow, at least she would get some more time with her parents. She would learn more about them. It was only a shame that they would never get to see how she turned out. She wondered how they would feel about her current life. Realizing that the next day was going to be a long one, she set the photo aside and went to bed.

The next day, Summer took extra care in choosing the right outfit for the time period before coming out. Though they wouldn't know who she was, she still wanted to make a good impression. As the party was latter in the day, Summer found she had plenty of time to kill. Going off alone, she walked along the quite streets remembering. Most people were either at home or church so she didn't have much to worry about on crowds. Thankfully, less people were about back in this era then in her time. She disliked crowds and could never understand why everyone had to be out and about on the holidays. As the sun started to slowly descend, Summer made her way back to the TARDIS. Meeting up with the Doctor, she smiled as she saw the wine battle. "Good choice. Dad was always a fan of some of the good wine." She informed him before growing silent. The walk over was a bit quiet with only a few words exchanged. As they approached the house, the Doctor informed her that he had a good feeling. That was good to know. She had begin to feel a bit of nerves but his confidence helped.

Knocking the door opened. Keeping any surprise or recognition from her face, Summer gave a small smile to the man who was undoubtedly her father. eyes lighting up briefly upon receiving the bottle of wine, the man nodded toward the living room where a few people had already started to gather. Closing the door, he quickly disappeared into the kitchen, undoubtedly putting the wine away. Going into the living room, Summer smiled nervously at all the people, forcing herself not to run and hide. Sitting down, she was surprised that Mabel came over to talk to them. Chatting away, Summer hid a smile. Yes, like father, like daughter. Her father hated parties a lot more than she did but he still put up with them because of his wife. Coming back into the living room, he sat stiffly, though his eyes lit up with affection, whenever he glanced at Mabel.

Realizing that Mabel was still talking, Summer quickly turned her attention back to here the two of them talk about some of the sights. After a few moments of conversation, which was mainly between the Doctor and Mabel, the Doctor excused himself and went to talk to a few other people. That left Summer there with the woman who would one day be here mother.

"I'm sorry, Summer" Mabel said apologetic, having already been introduced earlier in the conversation. "But you look a bit familiar. Have we met before?" She inquired.

Caught of guard a second, Summer shook her head. "No. You've never met me before." She replied honestly. Technically, her mother had yet to meet her as she had yet to be born.

Mabel nodded a bit puzzled at why Summer looked familiar but she quickly brushed it off with a smile. "So, is he your boyfriend?" She asked nodding toward the Doctor.

Summer blushed and shook her head. "No. Just a friend." She replied. "We meet some time back and are just traveling together at the moment. Nothing serious though." She stated.

Mabel just smiled. "But you like him?" She asked. Summer was saved from answering when someone announced it was time for games. Mabel winked and said something about later, before dragging Summer over to participate in a round of games. Finding herself next to the Doctor, Summer shook her head at his grin. He was having way to much fun with this.

It felt good to be back inside the TARDIS. It felt safe. She turned to the Doctor who seemed to have someplace in mind, which was just fine by her. After all, who was she to complain? "Tch, fine by me." Jennifer replied. The last thing she wanted to think about was romance. She watched him pilot the ship and she moved over to sit down, of course she knew as soon as she did get situated, they would already be someplace else, someplace far far away. A burst of excitement exploded in her heart. She was ready to move on now. A better time and a better place would be just what the doctor ordered. Speaking of doctors, the Doctor moved toward the door since it appeared like they had landed already. He told her she'd like it, that there wouldn't be any treats.

"I can't stand those chalky sweetheart candies, I swear you should only give them to people you secretly hate." Jen said and jumped from her seat and jogged over to the Doctor's side as usual. "Although...I couldn't turn down chocolate." She reconsidered with a smirk. He opened the door and stepped out. She quickly followed, pulling the door shut after her. Jennifer looked up and saw a vast deep blue sky and it was framing a big planet which appeared close enough to touch. She gasped and took a few steps forward, the long green grass tickling her knees. "Wow...this..." Trying to find a word for it would take more than a second so she paused and flipped through her internal dictionary of words she had collected over time. None were doing the view justice, which was annoying but the writer quickly cast that issue aside, because the view was just so breathtaking and majestic and beautiful and so so haunting.

"I can't even describe it." Jen said, a bit dumbfounded. It beat Berlin and any other place she had ever been to, out of the water and into a whole other planet. The Doctor said there wasn't anyone to bother them. "I'd be supremely jealous of anyone who gets to live here." She told him as they began to walk along the tall blades of grass. The grass was soft to the touch and there seemed to be nothing as far as the eye could see. It held no hostility whatsoever and that was more welcoming than she could imagine. She glanced at the horizon and saw a creature scamper off though she wasn't worried or concerned. "This is incredible, really really awe-mazing." She told him. Part of her just wanted to shut up because she couldn't properly put into words how great it was. She wasn't ready to give up yet though.

They continued to walk, she held her hand out, allowing her fingers to flick along the tips of the grass surrounding them as they wandered along. Up ahead they came across a small pond, which was only about the side of a tennis court. "Oh no, this is great, beyond great just...I love it. Thank you." Jen glanced to the Doctor as she stalled and just took a seat near the water's edge. It was blue, much like the sky's color reflected above them. It was much easier to forget about her own past when she was someplace so serine. Jennifer laid back and looked up at the sky, there wasn't anything but the other planet, as far as she could see. Still, the brunette was wearing a relaxed smile. If she were a cat, she would definitely want to run around. There was a tree also in the distance but for now, she was fine just laying around.

"This is pretty relaxing.' Jen commented. Pushing herself up, she sat up and glanced to the pond in front of her. "I guess it's hard for you to relax, you have a really stressful life." She noted. She had only been around him for a short time and she was already wondering if she had taken years off her life with all the running and life-or-death situations. But she wouldn't have it either way, she had been to some cool places. And this was just another on that list, though perhaps at the top now. "But hopefully I can make it a little less stressful..." She considered, knowing when they first met, that wasn't the case. "Cause if I'm not being useful, ya know getting the way, you should just tell me and I'll fix it or you can take me home." The last thing she wanted was to be a useless burden.

Now that they were at the party, the Doctor could step back a bit, this was Summer's moment. He would try to be as supportive as possible. He knew she didn't want to ruin anything in her timeline. That was very understandable. And a great cause for concern but he wasn't too worried about it. As long as Summer didn't reveal or hint to who she was, everything should be fine. He had faith in her and was sure that she could talk with her mother if he wasn't looming over her shoulder. So after he spoke with her mother, he excused himself to look around a bit. He found it easy to converse with guests as he just asked questions and nodded accordingly. People really lost the value of conversation but in their time presently, that wasn't the case. People were friendly and welcoming which he could have expected from a nice little seaside town such as Dover. So there were worse places the Doctor could have found himself in.

He kept an eye on Summer, to make sure she was doing alright, not seeming like she needed help. He continued to talk with the locals. He found out their relation to the hosts as well as how they were as people. From what the man could gather, Summer had very good typical parents. She was lucky. Some kids never knew theirs or worse, had parents who lacked the touch of love and just rejected their children. When he was offered something to drink, he kindly turned the offer down and carried on to the next bunch of party goers. Eventually someone called out a desire to play some harmless games before they brought out more snacks. The Doctor looked around, more intent to sit back and watch but seemed like Mable insisted he join them.

It also seemed Summer was going to be involved. The Doctor saw a pad of paper was being brought out and set up on an easel. Then large markers were being passed out. He picked a blue one, the color of the TARDIS. It was then explained they would be playing Pictionary. They were put into teams and somehow Mabel had put him with Summer, which was just fine with him though he wasn’t sure how useful he would be at a game which was more meant for humans with culture awareness, as well as artistic skills. He wasn’t sure if he was even a good artist or not. The first person went on the other team and the Doctor sat back on watched. The man began to draw two stick figures with their arms in the air. Then some sort of net was drawn and then someone yelled out 'volleyball' and a point was given to that team for getting it right. The Doctor made a bit of a face as he looked around to have someone go besides him.

Thankfully someone else went and the rest were tasked with guessing what was being drawn. The Doctor watched and thought about what it could be. There were animals being drawn, or trying to be drawn. They weren't turning out very good but he kept his opinion to himself. Soon it was clear that it was an animal shelter. Someone shouted it out and they got a point. They only had thirty seconds to guess and they had cut it close. They'd need to be more careful next time. The other team went but ended up failing to guess that their teammate was trying to draw disco. Next it was them again and the Doctor was elected to give it a go. He got up and glanced to Summer. He picked a scrap of paper from the hat and read it. It was teacher. He shrugged, should be easy enough. He drew a young woman and then a chalk board with a simple 2+2=4 equation on it and then drew a desk. Thankfully Summer called it out and he grinned.

Mabel congratulated the Doctor who sat back down, this time by where Summer was. He patted her on the back as the other team took their turn. After a few more rounds, it seemed there was a tie and there had to be a tie breaker. Mabel explained that each team would elect someone and they'd draw the same thing and the first team to guess would get the point. Simple enough but could bring on some stress. So far everyone had been fair to one another, enjoying wine or tea accordingly. The Doctor looked to Summer, "I think you should go it a go." He told her. "You'll be fine." He smiled. The Doctor looked to the other team, they had picked a man who was slightly older than Summer but one who probably had the best skills on his team. He had a feeling if Summer did win, it could warrant some praise from her mother. Though the Doctor was sure that Mabel would be encouraging no matter the outcome. This was Summer's night and he wanted her to enjoy herself.

Universe 1:

The Doctor smiled at Jen's pleasure. It was the little things that brought such pleasure. For him, it was nothing to travel to a glamorous sight but for his companions, they took loved it. They enjoyed it. It was new and exciting. And in a way, he was happy because they were happy. "You're welcome." He told her as she thanked him. Stopping by a pond, he watched her sit down and take in the view. Sprawling down beside her he looked out over the landscape though in reality, her expressions, and responses were more interesting to watch. He got his pleasure from watching the joy to others then from the actual landscape. After some many hundred years, certain things no longer touched you. However, humans always seemed to make him smile. Either that or get annoyed. Depending on the human.

When Jen noted that it must be hard for him to relax, he chuckled. She had no idea. He had always been running. Ever sense he stole the TARDIS so long ago, he ran - never looking back, barely stopping for any relaxation. It was funny actually. He really hadn't set out to constantly run into trouble, battle monsters, and help people. No, he had just wanted to see the universe. The splendor and glory of creation among the countless stars. Helping people and stopping monsters along the way had just came along. So he never did relax. Even before the war. And then with the war.... Well, needless to say he was still running. Still going forward, never daring to look back. He frowned as Jen stated something about going home. He looked at her. "Listen here. You're no burden." He told her. "I didn't have to take you and I could have left you back on earth, anytime." In fact he had - to other companions. Those that hadn't died, he had finally taken them home. Never because they were a burden or a hassle, no. He took them home because it was time to move on. Time for them to continue. Or whatever other reason that came up.

He looked at her, face serious. "You know, you're right about one thing. I don't relax. Rarely do. This..." He pointed toward the landscape and the planet in the sky. "This doesn't effect me anymore. I've been traveling the universe for so long I don't see the beauty anymore. Not by myself. Now you." He grinned. "You see it all. It's wondrous to you. Fresh, new. Beautiful. And because of that, I can see it again. You help me see the beauty again." He frowned. "So don't belittle yourself. I'll let you know if you become a burden." He didn't mean to sound harsh, it just came out a bit bluntly. Why did humans always think little of themselves? He had seen a lot, met a lot of individuals and never once had he met a human who wasn't important. Even though ones who did wrong had some potential, some purpose. He sighed. "You lot..." He said with a smile. "Probably the most important species out there and you think your not important." He turned to look at her. "But you are. Every last one of you."

He looked away again. Besides, they were his adoptive planet - though they didn't really know it. Even when Gallifrey was around, he considered earth his second home. In fact, he probably spent more time there then he did on Gallifrey. He leaned back. Though he was rearing to go, he forced himself to stay put. There would be plenty of time to go see other places. Plenty of time later to battle monsters or observe supernovas. Now, this time was for Jen. For her, not for him. And despite the fact humans were a strong species, and he did not doubt Jen in that aspect, he knew that she would probably need some time to relax, to recuperate from her meeting with Andrew, the sniveling little boyfriend. But then again, he did have a purpose. Without him leaving, the Doctor probably would never have met Jen. Selfish, yes. But he was glad he met her. Glad she ran away with him. She helped him to forget.

He sighed and looked over at her. "I'm sorry. That probably came out harsh." He stated. "I've been on my own for a while I forget to tone it down." He informed her. "What I mean to say is that I'm glad you're here." He smiled. "And I wouldn't have it any other way." He shrugged. "Though, if you want to leave, I can take you home. And I'll avoid Valentine's day." He said giving a cheeky grin to lighten the mood a little.
Universe 2:

Holding her marker, Summer watched as a few of the other teams went up first. She looked at the Doctor. She wondered what his artistic skills were like. She was fairly decent. Having practiced a lot when she was younger. She loved art and though photography was still number one, she enjoyed drawing on the side, mostly for her own pleasure. She didn't think of herself as really good, but decent. When it came to her turn, she nodded for the Doctor to go. Though she was good at art, she was not good at being the center of attention. Standing up in front of everyone and drawing was not the greatest idea. She smiled as he started to draw. Good. He was doing easy ones. "Teacher." She stated, though she had to repeat herself so they could hear her.

When he came back down next to her, she nudged him. "Not bad." She whispered. "Thanks for making it easy." They played several more rounds. Thankfully, she didn't have to go up except for once. When it came to the final round, Summer was surprised that they were one of the two teams left. When the Doctor told her to go, she gave him a slightly panicked look before forcing a smile and heading up there. She heard his words of encouragement and for some reason that helped a bit. Going to the center of the room, she nervously held her marker. When the other man let her go first, she nodded thanks and then went to the pad. Quick as lightning, yet flawless she drew. It was something easy. Something that he should easily get. The branches formed and she quickly put a few ornaments on them. Setting an angel on top, she backed away, finished extremely fast. She nodded as the Doctor guessed it.

"That's pretty good." Mabel stated. "You did that pretty quick. And the detail. You've got some talent."

A couple of the others nodded in agreement. Smiling politely, Summer made her way back to the Doctor and sat down. Her opponent, opened his marker and waited to start. Thankful, that the attention was off her, Summer took a sigh of relief. Part of her smiled on the inside at her mother's complement. It felt good coming from her and made it worth standing up in front of everyone. Though, she would prefer it wouldn't happen again.

She watched as the other team tried to guess what the man drew. She could see what it was but his team didn't. Finally the time ran out, making them the winner. Pulling them up in front of everyone, Mabel made them give a little bow before letting them sit back down. Then she took off to get more treats. Summer sat down next to the Doctor.

The next few hours flew by fairly quick. They sang a few carrels, discussed how the new year was going to be. In the mingling and multiple moving around, Summer found herself next to her father near the back. It was actually a good spot. A bit behind everyone, not in the limelight. Glancing at him sideways, she watched as the Doctor chatted with some lady who seemed to be flirting with him. Though she was very obvious that she was interested, he stayed polite but distant.

"Good man you got there." Her father stated, surprisingly Summer.

She looked over at him. "What? Oh..." She shook her head. "We aren't...It's not like that." She stated a bit flustered. It might seem strange that she was with him and others might think the wrong thing but that wasn't the case. Sure, there had been a few times where her emotions got the best of her around him, but no. It wasn't like that. "We're just friends." She stated.

He nodded. The two sat there silently for a few minutes just observing the room. Summer felt content. It was just like old times. As a child, she would sit next to him for hours, the two rarely talking, just sitting there enjoying each other's company the solitude. As the party started to break up. Standing, her father nodded to her before excusing himself. He apparently had something he needed to do. Seeing the Doctor come her way, she stood and smiled at him. "This was nice." She stated.

She knew very well that he didn’t have to take her around, she was grateful that he was. She could be back home just toiling away but instead she was someplace magical. She just wanted to know when it was all over and if he could validate it ending, she would leave on her own without any regrets. She would miss it, of course but the day she stopped earning a spot next to the time traveler would be the day it should all end. There was no point in continuing if neither of them were happy with the current situation. She knew she wasn’t the first and probably wouldn’t be the last either. The Doctor’s eyes were hauntingly lonesome and she hoped her presence helped warm him up, even just a little. Someone so amazing shouldn’t be so sad.

He then carried on and said how he didn’t relax and didn’t get much from places like the one they were in. That hurt. She felt for him, to not be able to enjoy one’s surroundings. She wouldn’t pry now but she did want to know what could have happened to take away such yearning. She smiled a bit when he mentioned that she could help him renew some of the perspectives he once cherished. He said he’d tell her if she became a burden. She didn’t see it as harsh, it was better to know and to change it than to ignore a problem and then make it worse. Jennifer glanced off for a moment and picked a blade of grass and spun it between her fingers, feeling its soft texture. Then there was silence, which she didn’t mind nor took offense to. It was fine with her, silence back home was hard to come by after all. And it was probably for the same for the Doctor.

“Hm?” She glanced to him when he spoke up, saying sorry for coming off harsh. “Oh no, it didn’t come off that way to me.” She waved a hand at him with a small smile. “You should be able to be honest with me after all we’ve been through.” She told him. He said he was glad to have met her which caused her to grin a bit. He said he could take her home if she wanted, granted that it wasn’t on Valentines Day. “Ha, no way. I’m good right here.” Jennifer told him happily. “You know someone once said that thinking you’re the worst person in the world is the same as thinking you’re the best. It’s giving yourself a place in the universe haven’t really earned.” Jen said and gave a shrug. She suppose it was true. “I knew plenty of people who often struggled with under or overconfidence. But trust me, sooner or later everyone gets their mind sorted out properly.” She said.

Jennifer stood up and turned around, getting the feeling they should get going.

So she wanted to take in as much as she could of the landscape. It was incredible. Jen looked at the Doctor and held a hand out for him. “Come on, we can’t sit around here for too long, not when there’s plenty to do and see elsewhere.” She smiled. They headed back toward the TARDIS and Jen found herself in a better mood already. Now they could move on and see what other adventures awaited them. As the Doctor moved over to pick a new destination, it seemed the machine began to pilot itself on its own before anything really should have happened. Jennifer waited until things settled before she tossed a curious look his way. “This ain’t gonna be a repeat of the whole killer video game thing, is it?” She asked him. “If it is, I have some clever words for whoever kidnapped us this go around.” She opened the door.

“Looks like a museum, pretty harmless I suppose.” She stepped out and the Doctor soon joined her. “Any idea where we are, precisely? And why the TARDIS brought us here? A history lesson?” Jen joked.

[Universe 2]

So far things seemed to be going well.

The Doctor was glad Summer was beginning to relax and enjoy this time with her parents at their party. He was enjoying himself too but his mind remained restless while his body stayed put and pretended that he was human and not able to feel the pull and turn of planets and stars and civilizations. But he was going accustomed to staying in one place, even if it was for only two days or so. Humans were a pleasant bunch who liked to plant their roots as well as explore the unreachable regions of the unknown. Little did they know that nothing was out of their reach, that they would spread far and wide in the future and would live on and laugh just as they were doing right now on this simple little Christmas Eve. He left Summer alone with a friendly pat on her shoulder and let her be while he went to continue socializing.

The time was passed with singing and nibbling on snacks. They all began to talk about various things and he did his best to keep up with current events. The Doctor had kept his eye on Summer and saw she was now with her father in the back, out of the way. He hoped she made this count and would find whatever she needed. She was lucky. He could never go back and visit those he lost. They were gone and he was alone. But he had his adventures and memories and his TARDIS of course. And then there was Summer, for now he had her and it did fill him with happiness, a feeling he rarely felt despite his outward appearance. The Doctor’s blunders and failures and dark days were difficult to escape and he had gotten so used to running away that he almost wanted to laugh at himself at the moment.

A woman had suddenly snapped his attention from Summer and they conversed casually. The Doctor found her to be very friendly, almost overly, but he listened to her as she talked about herself. It was then asked if he had come with anyone. “I came with her.” The Doctor turned his head to Summer. “We’re traveling together, she’s very lovely company I’ll say.” He smiled to the woman, not having much to say to her. It seemed this ruffled her feathers and she soon excused herself. The Doctor shrugged and just found another person to chat with. Women could be quite bewildering. Soon Summer’s father left and he walked over to her. “About ready to go?” He asked her, not wanting them to overstay their welcome as some people were already leaving as the night was wearing on. It seemed however that Summer’s dad had an announcement and the Doctor turned to see the man of few words get down on one knee and propose to Mabel. “Oh congratulations!” He applauded along with everyone else.

It was so rare for him to see happy moments and he was so happy for the newly engaged couple, as well as Summer. If it weren’t for them meeting and marrying, then he wouldn’t be standing next to Summer, so of course his grin was quite genuine. The happy couple made their rounds and the Doctor thanked them for their kindness and leaned down to whisper to Summer, “I’ll be in the TARDIS waiting, whenever you’re ready to go.” He then took his leave, sure that Summer would make her goodbyes count. About ten minutes later, she had come back and he had been waiting in the main room. “Hello.” He smiled to her. “I think we should take in a show. How does Shakespeare sound yeah?” The Doctor flipped a switch enthusiastically and they were soon off, relocating to Southwark, 1599. When the machine landed, he glanced to her clothes. “May want to get changed.” He noted.

The Doctor wouldn’t though. When Summer came back, he offered his arm to her. “Looks good. Shall we?” He asked her. He had been to a few plays but hadn’t yet gotten around to meeting the bard himself, maybe they would this time.

The Doctor smiled as she talked about how must people struggled with under or over confidence. That was true, especially among humans. He was glad she realized it though because that meant she would do fine. He looked back out over the landscape. Though it was very beautiful and he was glad for the view, he was rearing to go again. Forcing himself to remain there, smiling, he waited knowing that this was for Jen, not for him. In reality, he was ready to go. See new places, do something. Sitting doing nothing was just not cutting it for him. Thankfully, Jen seemed to be about finished as well. Turning she offered her hand for him to take. Grinning, he grabbed her hand and headed back toward the planet.

“So where should we go?” He asked as they entered the TARDIS. “Time of the dinosaurs? Futuristic earth? The first Mars mission?” He smiled. He would take her anywhere in the universe. Well, almost anywhere. But any time, planet, and place he would see if he could accommodate her. Getting an idea, he looked at her. “Never mind.” He informed her. “I have an idea of where to go.” There was an asteroid that actually sang. She would probably enjoy that. Flipping a few switches and tossing a couple levers he set the TARDIS off. Something for her to see before moving onto the next location. The Medusa Cascade was a sight to behold but he wasn’t feeling it at the moment. Not now. Probably not for a sometime.

The TARDIS jerked and he scowled. Again? She was really attempting to make him look bad. The TARDIS landed a bit and then went silent. Glaring at the console, he nodded understanding. That made more sense. Heading over toward the door, he shook his head as Jen stated how she hoped it wasn’t something like the killer video game. “Nope. A signal. The TARDIS picked it up and brought us here.” They exited and entered a dark room. Finding a light switch he turned it on. The lights illuminated a large warehouse filled with display cases. “Earth. Utah about half a mile underground to be precise." He informed her thoughtfully.

“Alien museum.” He told her walking down the long line of displays. “Someone has quite a hobby. Chunks of meteorite, moon dust. A part of the Roswell spaceship.” He smiled fondly. “That was fun.” He shook his head. “Must have spent a fortune to obtain all this.” Spotting something, he grinned and walked over to it. “Look at you.” He said looking at a metal head of an old enemy.

“Cybermen.” He told her nodding toward her. “An old acquaintance of mine. Well enemy actually. Reduced to this.” He shook his head. “I’m getting old.” He frowned and glanced at some of the displays. “Nothing here sending that signal though.” He muttered, more to himself then to her. “I wonder where it is coming from.”
Jen stating his name caused him to look up. Several armed guards had made their way into the room and were now between them and the TARDIS. “Hello.” He said smiling at them. “I’m the Doctor. We come in peace.” He looked at Jen, grinning at his parody.

Needless to say the guards were not as impressed as he would have liked. Both of them found themselves being dragged down the hall. They were lead into a room where several people were going over different types of artifacts. The guards let them go but kept a close eye on them. Frowning, the Doctor watched as some young kid picked up an artifact and held it. Shaking his head, he interrupted. “Don’t hold it like that.” He declared taking it. Everyone looked at him. “You need to be gentle with it.”
“Because it’s a weapon?” The young man asked slightly worried, slightly excited.

The Doctor grunted. “In one way maybe.” He gently ran his finger over it, smiling as musical sound came from it.

“It’s an instrument.” A voice said.

The Doctor looked toward the speaker. It was the man, who from everyone’s attitude was the man in charge. “Of course it is.” He scoffed. “Not everything that comes to earth is a weapon. Humans.” He grunted. The man snatched the artifact and ran his finger over it a bit harshly. “It does take a delicate touch.” The Doctor declared.
Shrugging as if he didn’t care, the man tossed it aside. “The question is, who are you?”

The Doctor smiled. “I’m the Doctor and this is my companion Jen.”

The man whistled. “My, my. What a beauty. Why are you hanging around him, doll?” The man asked. “You should hang around people of power and influence. Someone like me.” He smiled.
Universe 2

When the Doctor asked if she was ready, she looked around. She did not want to leave so quickly but then again, maybe it was time. Before she could answer though, her father came back in the room. Going to the middle, he cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention. Summer watched surprised. Her father never did that. Apparently her mother was as surprised as she, because she looked at him. “What are you doing?” She asked a bit bewildered.

Getting down on one knee, the man pulled out a box. “Mabel, you make my life complete. With you I have purpose and I can face the morrow. Will you marry me?”

The reaction was widespread, and Summer had to turn so no one would see the tears of joy. Nobody except for maybe the Doctor would understand. Everyone else was excited and cheering. Mabel was just shell-shocked. However, she quickly recovered. “Yes. Yes I will.”

The next few minutes were caught up in a whirlwind and Summer was able to fully compose herself by time her parents came around. Hugging her mother and nodding at her father, she congratulated them both, her smile pretty wide. She nodded as the Doctor stated he would be heading back to the TARDIS. She understood. This was for her. He didn’t know them and though he was happy for them, it didn’t impact him as it did her.

Keeping that in mind, she kept her time there short. Saying thank you and congratulations once again, she gave her farewells. As she made her way toward the TARDIS, she took her time, taking in the sights and smells of Dover for one last time. As she walked, she felt a release. It was if she was ready to move on. Sure, in her heart she would always miss her parents to some point but now, she felt she could move on in freedom without feeling guilty. Pausing at the TARDIS, she turned and looked once more. A light snow started to fall and in the distance she could hear the sounds of ships coming and going from the harbor. A peaceful smile crept across her face and she turned. Entering the TARDIS, she looked at the Doctor. He was already to head to the next place. Nodding, she made her way over to the console and watched him flip switches, press buttons and get the TARDIS going.

She frowned as she realized she hadn’t yet what this meant to her but glancing at the Doctor, she guessed he already knew. Shifting gears, she hung on as the TARDIS flew, her mind already looking forward to watching a bit of Shakespeare. A student of the arts, she had sat in more than one class discussing the attributes of Shakespeare. She thoroughly enjoyed his work and was looking forward to seeing him in person.

As the TARDIS came to a stop, she started toward the door. The Doctor called out and she looked down at her clothes. Laughing, she nodded. “Yeah, they probably wouldn’t appreciate modern female attire.” She declared. “I’ll be right back.”

She dashed down the hall and toward the large wardrobe. It took her a bit to find the time and era and a bit more to change into the right attire. Making her way back, she accepted the Doctor’s arm. “Thank you.” She said, pleased that he approved. Why she felt it was important, she didn’t want to think about. “You haven’t changed.” She noted. No matter where they went, he wore about the same clothes. If she didn’t enjoy different outfits, including older era attire, she might feel a bit jealous. Instead, she just shook her head. “So, what play are we going to go see?” She inquired. “And are we going to meet Shakespeare himself?” She asked as they stepped outside and onto the street. Excitement pulsed through her and she couldn’t help feel a tiny spring in her step.

Since he had mentioned space and dinosaurs, Jen couldn't help but find her interest rather piqued. And had she known about a singing asteroid, she would be pretty interested in that as well. Sadly it seemed like the TARDIS has other things in mind but Jennifer couldn't complain much, it was a time machine after all. And she was so lucky to bumbling around inside it. So as long as she didn't almost die, for probably the fourth time, she would be alright. And she had the wonderful Doctor so she was sure that no matter what pickle they got into, that they would somehow be good. "Does your TARDIS ever listen to you?" Jen joked as they looked around the museum. "It's not on "shuffle" is it?" She joked a little as the lights were turned on. The Doctor specified where they were. "Alien museum?" She repeated thoughtfully.

As they checked out the exhibits and collections, the Doctor found one that interested him. Jen remained smiling, feeling comfortable again. They were back to just roaming and discovering. She was miles away from Germany, in her mind. "Cybermen?" She frowned, realizing how little she knew about the man beside it. It saddened her. How much did he know about her? She shook her head, not wanting to get upset again. "Yeah, super old." She smirked a little. She then heard footsteps marching down a long hall. Jennifer walked a bit closer and frowned. "Uh oh." Clearly they were trespassing. "Uh Doctor!" She called out and backed up closer to him. How was it that trouble was everywhere these days? Then the Doctor introduce them and she let out a snort and resisted an eye roll, certain it wouldn't be welcomed at the moment.

"We can leave if you-" But she was cut off by them grabbing her and the Doctor and pulling them along. "Or not, whatever." Jen smiled nervously and glanced to the Doctor. She wasn't scared as much as she was amused by this whole turn of events. "I can't go anywhere with you can I?" She grinned teasing. "I'm not dressed in proper prisoner attire, you know. Ow!" She glared at the man pulling her along. Thankfully their journey ended as they were taken to a room where a guy, around her age maybe younger, was holding some device. Jen tugged her arm free and looked to the Doctor who seemed keen on educating the guy. "Ohh that's nice." She smiled, though she wasn't sure it was the best time for a concert when the guards were armed.

Then a man spoke and everyone jolted to attention. Jen turned around and backed up a bit. Her guard was up now. He asked who the Doctor and she was and the Doctor once again gave the light introductions. "Hi." She gave a small wave to the man, a smile pushing its way to her lips. Much to her dismay he then whistled at her and she glanced off for a moment, not sure if she should be flattered or creeped out. Of course if she was flattered and played along, they might not get into any trouble but then again, Jennifer did not want to deal with weird guys flirting with her. Part of her wished she could pretend she was more than just a companion to the Doctor, then her problem would be solved. Right? "Oh goodness, you're flattering..." Jen said and smiled at the man, rubbing her neck sheepishly.

"Uhm he's um..." Jen looked to the Doctor. "I don't know." She sighed, feeling terribly awkward. Her first instinct around guys she wasn't interested in was to just say she was into women but that usually just backfired. Her second instinct was just to say she and the Doctor were married, that would fix everything, right? But Jen ultimately decided to just play along for the sake of not making too many waves, what with guns everywhere and them being trapped underground in America. "Um thank you, that's so sweet of you to offer. I'll think about it." She let out a small girly giggle and held back any urge to puke. "So um yeah..." She flashed a smile. "This is going to sound weird but we came here because we were...summoned." Jen said, trying to improvise.

She was a writer after all.

"Are you by any chance...holding something super high tech and super secret?" She asked sweetly and put her hand on the man's arm. "My friend and I are alien aficionados," sort of. "and perhaps we can strike up a deal if necessary." She forced herself to say as she quickly removed her hand. The man introduced himself as Henry Van Statten and said that they did have something very special locked up and would be honored to show them. "Awesome!" Jen glanced to the Doctor, hoping this paid off for them. It was odd to think the TARDIS took them to such a place but hopefully everything was okay. Following a vague signal could be dangerous. They were led down to the Cage and were let inside the room where the specimen was kept.

"What's this thing called anyway?" Jen asked as the door shut behind her, the Doctor and Van Statten. The dim lights flickered on to reveal a metal creature though it looked like an oversized kitchen appliance to her. "Doctor, do you know?" Jennifer asked. But after she finished her question, the machine suddenly moved and began to speak though it wasn't easy to understand the electronic voice. The Doctor instructed the door be opened but Van Statten quickly overrode the request by instructing those on the other side, to ignore the Doctor's plea. Jen was pushed behind the Doctor but before anything could happen, it aimed at them but then there was nothing. Nothing at all. Jen swallowed and peeked around the Doctor to see what all the panic was about. "Doctor? Is he another...enemy of yours? Like the Cybermen?"

"This is amazing, you've got it to speak!" Henry Van Statten praised.

At Summer's mention of him not changing, he waved with his free arm.

"Nah, I don't think I ever have to. As long as you've got the right attitude." He said though he frowned, not liking how that sounded. "That didn't sound right." He made a sour look and thought a bit longer. "Nah, I just don't change, each one of my regenerations seems to have his own sense of style and no matter where I go, I make it my duty to remain myself. You however, did have to change, just in case. I don't want any of the locals in this era to bother you." The Doctor said, liking that long winded explanation much better. He then realized his term of regeneration might have sounded odd out of context so he quickly decided to sum it up as best he could so they could enjoy themselves and perhaps a play and something to eat.

While the Doctor wasn't one for eating as he didn't often need to, he was developing the human habit after being around Summer. That wasn't a bad thing. "Oh when I regenerate, it's sort of when I die. The cells in my body end up changing. It's how Time Lords can cheat death in a way. And when I regenerate I change both physically and sometimes mentally. I used to love pears but I hate them now. But don't worry, my memories and knowledge stays safe and sound." The Doctor smiled to Summer, not wanting to worry or alarm her. They had other things to think about aside from his changing cycles and to his knowledge, he wouldn't have to regenerate for a while. He liked his current body and his current companion. For now, he didn't need to change. Seeing the universe as well as saving it, sounded great to him.

And on top of that, they could see a real Shakespearean play!

Then he decided to address what Summer had actually asked him about the play itself. "Whatever's playing really. It's not like there's a selection. Everyone in the town would gather, from the wealthy to the common folk. Entertainment brings people together in any time and place." He reflected fondly. "But we could meet him, I don't see why not. I've always wanted to but never found the proper chance." He frowned thoughtfully. He looked to Summer and shrugged, "But since you asked, I shall do my best!" He gave a bit of a bow to her as they walked along the muddy streets of the town. It was nightfall but everyone seemed so lively, ready for the play which would likely be starting soon. The Doctor could sense they should get to the theater soon.

"You know this place isn't too different from yours." He told Summer. "People debate and gather over drinks. They tell stories and joke around." He said. As they neared the large structure, he moved his arm around Summer's waist to keep her close. The crowd was massive and he didn't feel like playing hide-and-go-seek with Summer in a place such as this. While there were similarities to the twenty-first century, he wanted to keep her safe and to do so, she couldn't wander off or get lost as she usually did. He wondered why his companions always tended to do that but it was very exhausting. "I'm such a fan of him." He said, beaming as they pushed their way into the globe theater. "Yet every play I've seen so far, he's never made an appearance." He said sadly. Of course now could be different.

As the play started, it was soon realized that they were putting on the end to Love's Labor's Lost. The Doctor assumed it was broken down in parts so that the people didn't have to stand in dirt in the humid evening for long periods of time. He glanced to Summer, hoping she was enjoying herself because he certainly was. But if he knew Summer wasn't, he'd do his best to fix that. He liked to make people happy. It in turn made him happy, helped repel any sadness or regret echoing inside of him. Times like this, when he was with good people, sharing a grand event, he forgot that he was utterly alone, that his people were gone, that he had caused so much harm to so many in the universe.

As the play came to its conclusion, he clapped along with everyone else. "Oh bravo good sir, bravo!" He praised.

And much to the time traveler's delight, the talented writer revealed himself and the crowd went wild. They laughed and cheered and the Doctor waited with baited breath to hear what Shakespeare himself had to say to his fans. What came out of the man's mouth was, "Ah, shut your big fat mouths!" And the Doctor's face fell and he grumbled a bit to himself as the man continued. " I know what you're all saying. Love's Labour's Lost, that's a funny ending, isn't it? It just stops. Will the boys get the girls? Well, don't get your hose in a tangle, you'll find out soon. Yeah, yeah. All in good time. You don't rush a genius." He paused for a moment and then continued stiffly, "When? Tomorrow night. The premiere of my brand new play. A sequel, no less, and I call it Loves Labour's Won." He said and soon excused himself.

"That can't be right." The Doctor was quick to say. They soon exited and found themselves on the street. "I mean there were rumors of a play being lost but..." Something didn't feel right at all. "Now we really must meet William." He declared. He headed off with Summer to track down the playwright. They were given an tip of where he stayed and wrote. So he and Summer went and found the inn, as well as the room and knocked. "Excuse me, William Shakespeare? We just saw the play, fantastic I must say but I'm a little curious as to what made you consider writing it." He started to say but he was cut off by the bard getting to his feet and looking at Summer. "Oh I'm sorry, this is Summer we're-" He then extended his psychic paper but the man frowned at it and cut the Doctor off.

"It's blank."

"It...is...yes." The Doctor cleared his throat. "You are quite a genius. I'm impressed." The Doctor couldn't help but smile.

"Hey nonny nonny, sweet lady." He bowed to Summer, a grin appearing on his face.

He had not expected that. But the Doctor had to hand it to her, she got the man talking. Men were funny sometimes. Especially a man like him. Jen played well on his ego and not only did they learn his name but they were getting a private tour to see this “special thing”. Following along, the Doctor kept back as Jen and Mr. Van Statten continued to chat. Glancing over, he smiled at the stern faced guards, who apparently did not trust him despite the fact that their boss was so taken with Jen. Maybe that added to their dislike. He didn’t know. He glanced at Jen. He could see why Van Statten was attracted to her. She wasn’t a Cleopatra but she did have her own beauty to her and in his sense, made a better traveling companion any day. Not that Van Statten was thinking of her as a traveling companion – at least not in the sense the Doctor and Jen had been.

Reaching the cage, the Doctor waited for the large door to open. The nerve of humans sometimes. Locking up something they didn’t understand. His jaw clenched. Whoever it was, he was going to do what he could to free it. Though he had yet to see it, the way Van Statten spoke, the Doctor knew that it was extraterrestrial and sentient. He would have to do something. Humans couldn’t just lock up whatever they found whenever they feel like it. One of these days it would come back to bite them.
The large door shut behind them, leaving the three of them alone in the room with whatever the “special thing” was. Dim lights cast shadows on around the room, and whatever the thing was, it was hidden deep in the shadows. Glaring at Van Statten he took a step forward. “Whoever it is, it doesn’t deserve staying chained here.” He declared just before the creature spoke. Face paling, he took a step back.

Moving forward, the creature spoke again, the twin lights on the metal dome flashing with each word. As he spoke, his voice grew stronger. “Doc-tor? The Doc-tor?”
Turning, terrified, the Doctor looked at Van Statten, not bothering to answer Jen. “We got to get out of here.” He declared. “Now.” The man just laughed and said something about getting it to talk. The Doctor shook his head. The man was an idiot.

“Exterminate.” The electronic voice spoke again. “You are an enemy of the Daleks! You will be exterminated!”

Moving in front of Jen to protect her, the Doctor winced waiting for the bolt of energy that would take his life but it never came. Glancing up, he looked over. The creature pressed up against the chains, straining to break them. Though, the fire mechanism was aimed at them and moving, nothing came out. The eye piece moved down and looked at the weapon. Laughing, the Doctor moved closer. “Fantastic.” He declared. “Oh fantastic. Look at you, completely powerless.” He laughed again. “The great space dustbin. Fantastic.” His expression changed slightly. “How does it feel?”

The machine backed up slowly now defenseless. “Stay away.” It croaked, seeming afraid.

Ignoring its plea, the Doctor moved up to it’s eyepiece. “What for? What you going to do? If you can’t kill, then what good are you? What’s the point, Dalek?” The word came off with venom and bitterness, adding to his mocking tone. As if no one else was in the room or watching, the Doctor continued. “You are nothing. What are you doing here?” He mocked.

“I am waiting for orders.” The creature replied.

The Doctor chuckled. “You got a long way to go.” He turned slightly and took a step, only to spin back and look at the creature. “They’re never going to come. They’re dead. Your entire race is dead. Burnt. Tens of millions of ships burning the sky. The entire Dalek race wiped out in seconds.” The amount of glee in his tone as he rubbed the fact into the Dalek sounded nothing like the man who had met Jen.

Van Statten grabbed Jen to keep her from going forward. “Wait. This is good.” He said, his grip, though not harsh, firm.

“You lie!” The Dalek screamed. “You lie!”

“I watched it happen.” Gone was the animosity, the anger. It was as if it burdened him. Straightening, he glared at the Dalek. “I made it happen. In a moment, I did what you are best at.” He said snapping his finger. “I exterminated the Dalek race.”

“And the Time Lords?” The Dalek inquired.

His shoulders fells slightly. “Dead. They burnt with you. The end of the Last Great Time War.” He shook his head. “Everyone lost.”

“And the coward survived.” The Dalek declared.

The Doctor looked at him. “Oh I caught your signal.” He shot right back. “Help me, I’m alone. Poor little thing.” He mocked. “But no one’s coming. All gone.”

“I am alone.” The Dalek replied. The Doctor nodded. “We are the same Doctor.” The Dalek continued. “Alone in the universe.”

Rage filled the Doctor’s face. “We are not the same!” He shot back. Then he paused. “You know what, maybe you’re right.” He walked over to the lever. “Cause you know what I’m going to do?” He put his hand on the lever. “I’m going to exterminate you.” He said flipping the switch.

The Dalek screamed as electricity, strengthened by the metal coursed through the mutated alien. That was enough for Van Statten. Calling into the camera for backup, he pulled the Doctor back and into the arms of two awaiting guards. Flipping the switch, he ended the Dalek’s pain. “Take him somewhere we can talk.” He ordered. He nodded for another guard to keep Jen back so she couldn’t come forward. “Sorry, darling.” He said winking at her. “This will have to be private.” He nodded toward the technician who had been working on the Dalek. “Keep it talking.” He ordered following the men out. Only until after they were gone did the guard step out of Jen’s way.

Regeneration. That seemed strangely out of context. She glanced sideways at the Doctor wondering what he meant by that. However, he seemed to realize how it sounded and went on to explain what he meant. Cheating death… That was interesting. To be able to avoid the fate of all mankind sounded enviable. Not that she feared death, no. She just preferred to live. The fact that it caused physical and even mental changes sounded a bit dangerous to her. Though she wouldn’t mind a body that was more attractive, the thought of changing personalities frightened her. Yes, some people might think she was a bit slow. True, she was reflective, but she liked it that way. True, life’s circumstances were often what she liked but she wouldn’t change her life for anyone else’s. Still…

Moving the conversation to Shakespeare, Summer listened to him talk. It made sense that everyone went. When one only had the day-to-day mundane, any form of entertainment would be a good escape. She hid a smile, slightly amused as he gave a bow. Sometimes he could act so much like a gentleman. So polite, so kind. It was a talent that was sorely lacking in her twenty-first century home. As they walked toward the large theatre, Summer listened to the Doctor compare the two times. Her heartbeat picked up a bit when he pulled her closer. She glanced to the side. Why was she acting this way? They were traveling companions, friends. There was nothing between them. Nor did she want anything. Or did she? She pushed the thoughts aide. Of course not. She barely knew him. Besides, she didn’t want a relationship. They got complicated with pressures for more when in reality she just wanted a friend.

Sitting down, Summer turned her attention to the stage. She wasn’t going to let anything spoil her from this moment. She loved the theatre and Shakespeare was one of her favorite playwrights. When the play started, she was a bit surprised to see that they jumped straight into the end of Love’s Labour’s Lost. Though they missed most of it, she still watched eagerly as they ran through the ending. As the play ended, she joined the rest in clapping, though she did not call out. It wasn’t something she liked to do. “That was fun.” She said turning to glance at the Doctor. However, just then the man himself came on stage. She turned and looked back at Shakespeare a bit excited. It was him. He looked a bit different then she expected but still she recognized him from the portraits they still had of him.

When he spoke, her smile disappeared. That was unexpected. Not something she expected him to say. When he promised a sequel, her frown increased. That made no sense. There was no play called Loves Labour’s Won. Watching him leave she turned to the Doctor puzzled but he beat her to the punch. She was glad that it wasn’t just her and she followed him outside. Despite the fact that Shakespeare was different then what she expected, excitement ran through her as the desire to meet him still ran strong.
The inn they found the man in was not the best. But then again, Summer doubted any of the inns at this time would be good. She waited as the Doctor pulled out a paper and introduced them. When Shakespeare declared the paper was blank, she frowned and glanced at it. There was words on it. But before she could say anything, Shakespeare apparently wasn’t finished. Giving a slight bow, he spoke.

Unsure who he was talking to she glanced slightly behind her only to realize he had been speaking to her. A bit surprised, Summer wasn’t sure whether she should feel insulted or flattered. “Uh, thank ye kind sir.” She stated settling for a polite response. The glanced at the Doctor as he informed her no. Not to talk like that. As the two sat down, she forced a smile as Shakespeare moved up right next to her. He was definitely not what she expected. Despite the Doctor’s attempts at discussing the play, the man still injected several compliments her way, interested more in discussing her then his writings.

“No. I’m not from around here.” She replied to yet another one of his questions. Though the attention was quite flattering, she was getting a bit uncomfortable. She looked at the Doctor hoping he would get the man’s mind off her and onto something else. Thankfully for both of them, another man entered the room. He seemed quite wealthy for the time. His clothes were better material and he wore a gold chain of office.

“I say sir.” He declared looking at Shakespeare. “That was an abominable behavior. A new play? And without warning?” He shook his head annoyed as he glared at the playwright. “As you well know, I am the Master of Reveals. All plays must be approved by me before they can be performed.” His eyes narrowed. “Pulling this on me at the last moment is just detestable. Let’s see it then.” He ordered. When Shakespeare pretended to act innocent, the man’s face started to turn even more purple. “The script, Sir!” He declared. “Let me see it.”

Summer watched as the two conversed. Though it brought a bit of relief from all Shakespeare’s attention, she felt sorry for him as the man continued to berate him. “You can’t?” The vein in his head practically popped. “In that case, your performance is hereby canceled.” He declared. “I'm returning to my office for a banning order. If it's the last thing I do, Love's Labours Won will never be played.” With that he stomped out of the room, leaving the three of them alone.
Summer glanced over at Shakespeare. The man just laughed nervously and turned his attention back to her. “Aren’t you concerned about the fact he is not doing your show?” She inquired.

Turns out, he hadn’t even written the script. The play being canceled would save him the hassle of having to stay up all night writing it. She glanced at the Doctor a bit surprised. Apparently, the playwright didn’t mind the fact that many people would be annoyed with the performance being canceled. He was still famous enough that people would still come and see him.

Turning back, she was found that Shakespeare once again came at her engaging her in conversation. Naturally a reserved person, and though the attention was flattering and all, this was getting very uncomfortable. Thankfully for her, the Doctor stated that they had to go. Suppressing a sigh of relief, she let her hand be kissed and quickly followed the Doctor out.

“Thank you.” She whispered when they were out of the room. “It was getting a bit difficult in there. He is not like what I expected.” She declared.
A scream echoed through the air causing them to stop. Taking off after the Doctor, Summer tried to keep up, her attire slowing her down. Though she liked dresses, they did limit the movement and speed of an individual. Thankfully though, they didn’t go far so she didn’t lose the Doctor. Seeing a man on the ground she recognized him as the man from the room. “What happened?” She asked as the Doctor examined the man.

She couldn't believe it.

There had been such a switch. From terror to glee to malice. She really didn't get why either. He called the thing Dalek. She was clearly out of some important loop. The Doctor seemed to thrilled about its lack of firepower but she couldn't help but still be concerned about him. She had never seen him so outspoken about an enemy. "Doctor!" She called out, but before she could hurry over to him, Van Statten stopped her. She threw him a glare. "This is not good!" She hissed at him and looked back to the Doctor and the Dalek. The Doctor then bragged about he had destroyed an entire race. She was actually starting to get a little fearful, not for her self exactly, but she just had never seen the Doctor so enthralled before and she was getting idea that something had to put an end to the fight.

Before she could try and speak, the Doctor and Dalek continued. The Doctor was quick to mock it and then the Dalek countered by comparing them to one another. While she didn't know the details, she didn't want to think the Doctor was alone. What did that make her? A passerby? The man then marched over to the machine and turned it on. Jen quickly looked to see the alien reeling in pain. "Doctor!?" She glared slightly. While she couldn't speak on the Dalek's behalf, she didn't think the Doctor would be so cruel. Maybe she didn't know him as well as she thought she did. Jen had no idea what to think. The Doctor was apprehended and Jen attempted to go to him but another guard quickly pulled her back. "Hey, let me go!" She yelled, having a feeling her charms wouldn't work on Van Statten anymore.

Her first instinct was to yell a hearty, 'fuck you' to Van Statten as he winked at her but she held her tongue, thinking she could salvage something to get her and the Doctor out of this mess. When Van Statten walked off, she quickly moved around to the Dalek who had settled down from the jolt of electricity. She looked at it and wasn't sure what to say. She wasn't about to apologize for the Doctor. It wasn't her place. But still, she felt a little sorry for it, even if she didn't know the entire story, it seemed like both sides did a lot of harm. But why should the Doctor hold one Dalek accountable for the lot? It wasn't fair. "Are you in pain?" Jennifer asked, biting her lower lip. It said it was and she couldn't help but reach forward. Placing her palm on the iron body, she felt a hot burning sting and pulled away. 'Ow!" She looked at her palm.

Suddenly the machine sprang to life and began to break the chains holding. Oh crap. Oh shit shit shit. Jen turned and ran out, the other guard after her, yelling at her. The vault closed and locked the now free Dalek inside but it seemed to already have an idea of how to break out. She ran down the hall as someone tried to grab her in order to detain her. "Doctor! Doctor!" She yelled out. Behind her, she heard someone call out that it was suddenly free. She passed an open room and saw the Doctor shirtless, strung up like some animal. Now was not the time to be admiring him without a shirt. She skidded inside and shut the door behind her as cries of pain reached their room. "I did something really bad. I think." Jen grimaced. "I'm really really sorry." She said.

"And what exactly are you doing to him?" She glared at Van Statten. "Let him go now!" She demanded. Jennifer was getting real fed up with how things were handled around here.

Summer first attempted to use the taught speech old English but he shook his head at her. Just. No. That was not necessary. Nor would it get them very far. Frank speech would suit them just fine, he had learned through the hundreds of years of travel and exploration. The Doctor tried to get some information from William but instead, the writer seemed intent to talk about or even to Summer. It was a bit frustrating and he didn't think it would do them any good. But it seemed for the time being, Summer was alright. As the man asked Summer where she was from, the Doctor put a hand on Summer's shoulder and said she was from another country. As he was about to speak again, someone entered and thankfully took the attention off of his companion.

The Doctor and Summer watched with interest as the two men talked back and forth, it becoming heated. The Doctor was sensing something was amiss. Something usually was. Could he never get a trip where nothing eventful happened? Though the one with Summer and her parents had been a good trip and they weren't met with any bad surprises there. The man left and Summer asked William about the play not being preformed but the Doctor had a feeling the play had yet to even be written. That was clear to him, the man had been so uneasy and generous, trying to avoid stating the obvious blunder. "Why would you promise a play that hadn't even be done yet?" He asked. But then as if the coin had been flipped, Shakespeare had then said it could be canceled and may be for the best after all if it was.

How odd.

Something was wrong. He stood up and looked to Summer who had once again gotten the attention of the playwright. He could tell this was becoming a bit too much for the girl. "We really must be going. Thank you for your audience." He said and quickly headed out, hand on Summer's back as they exited. Once out in the hall, he dropped his hand and Summer thanked him. He looked off when they then heard a scream. "Well now we've got a lead." He said, a bit pleased with a new discovery. They ran along and he and Summer reached the source of the exclamation. He bent down and observed the man they had seen leave minutes ago. He looked around, a crowd drawing near. He didn't need his sonic to tell him what had happened. He looked up. "He's died of a natural cause, there's nothing to worry about!" He called to the concerned spectators.

When he stood up however, he whispered to Summer, "Witchcraft." He said and got the dirt off of his suit. A woman hurried forward and said they had a room ready for them. "Thank you." He said and glanced to Summer. Soon Shakespeare comes out to also take a look at the chaos. They walked back into the inn and up the stairs. Shakespeare asks the Doctor about his eyes, noting how old they appear. The Doctor just gave him a smile and replied, "I read a lot." He said simply and put an arm around Summer. "Goodnight." He said. The writer nodded and bid them the same farewell. The Doctor headed to their room, it was quite lacking but he didn't mind so much. And he hoped by now, Summer wouldn't mind either. They'd been in far worse places. "You can take the bed, I don't think I'll be doing much sleep myself..." He said and looked out the window. Something was very 'off' about their position. The shift in Shakespeare's will to write and the death of the man who tried to put an end to it.

He glanced back to Summer, "Shakespeare is quite an interesting fellow..." He noted, thinking back to their interactions with him. He hoped Summer was still enjoying the trip, despite the oddity of it.

Universe 1:

The guards escorted the Doctor and Van Statten up several levels. Though they were right there making sure he went along, the guards let the Doctor walk on his own. "You need to destroy it." The Doctor informed the stubborn man. "It's pure evil with the intent to kill everyone who is not a Dalek."

"Dalek. That's an interesting name. I'm assuming that the metal casing is not part of the creature." Van Statten replied either not hearing the Doctor's suggestion or not caring.

The Doctor sighed. "Yes. It is an armor. It holds a mutation. A creature genetically engineered to have no emotion except for hate. It will not think twice killing." He stated as they approached a room. "You must destroy it."

Van Statten smiled, a bit condescendingly. "And destroy the last one of its race?" He inquired. "You did say it was the last?"

The Doctor nodded. "Must have somehow escaped the Time War." He said shaking his head. "Falling through time. I'm surprised it's not mad."

"They did say when it hit earth, it burnt in it's crater screaming for days before finally being collected and brought her." The professionally dressed woman next to Van Statten stated. The Doctor looked her way and then nodded. That would make sense.

"War?" Van Statten inquired. "Is this the same one you were speaking about earlier?" He asked.

The Doctor nodded as he paced in the hallway. "The Time War. The final battle between the Daleks and my people." He couldn't stand it. That Dalek still being alive. Just one Dalek and the destruction and horrors of the time war could all be restarted. All his people, everything he sacrificed would be in vain. "You must destroy it." He said turning to Van Statten.

The man nodded toward the guards who grabbed the Doctor. "What I'm more interested in is the fact that the Dalek is not the only one that is a survivor of it's people." He nodded toward the Time Lord. "Appearing you are as well. Let's see what makes you tick." He said nodding toward the room. Turning on the laser scanner, he smiled as the Doctor screamed in pain. "Two hearts! Binary vascular system. Oh, I am so going to patent this." He said, the scan completing.

The Doctor looked at him and shook his head. "That's what you are. A scavenger." He shook his head. "Scrounging everything and undoubtedly keeping it for yourself."

"Of course." Van Statten exclaimed. However, before he could continue another guard entered.

"The creature, it's escaping." He declared nervously. Van Statten turned to deal with him as Jen entered.

The Doctor looked over at Jen. Though he didn't know exactly what she did he had a feeling. The Dalek in the vault had been dying. Not enough power to do anything. If it was escaping and Jen was feeling guilty, then undoubtedly she touched it. "That's alright." He told her. The fault lay in Van Statten. He should have listened. "Let me go. You need to destroy this creature."

"The creature is locked in with a billion number combination lock." Van Statton replied a bit arrogantly, though there was just a tad of fear in them.

"A Dalek is a genius. It will crack that code in five seconds." The Doctor snapped his finger.

"He's right." The aid said looking at her screen. The Dalek escaped."

Van Statton looked from one person to the next. Then he nodded. "Alright. Release him." He looked at the Doctor. "What do we do?"

"Seal off the lower deck." The Doctor said shrugging the guards off as soon as he was free. Heading out the door he put his shirt and jacket back on. "Arm everyone. Maybe, just maybe you'll survive." He shook his head at their stupidity. But then again, what could he expect? Of course they wouldn't know what a Dalek is. But they should have listened to him. He looked at Jen. "You should go to the TARDIS, it will be safer." When she protested he frowned. "Jen, these aren't just any alien enemy. These are Daleks. There is no greater enemy in all of creation." He sighed. "Just stay close." He said dashing up the stairs. "Where can we seal off the lower decks?" He inquired.

"Level 35." Van Statton replied following them, his face pale. He looked at his aid. "Make sure they don't harm it. I want it captured alive."
Universe 2

Summer watched as the Doctor informed everyone that he died of natural causes. She frowned and looked down at the man. She was no Doctor but that didn’t look right. For a second she feared the alien from Mars had found its way here. The man had died of drowning yet no water was around. As she followed the Doctor, he turned to her and informed her it was witchcraft. Now a bit more confused she followed the Doctor back to the inn. Patiently, Summer waited for the Doctor to procure a room. As he was finishing they ran into Shakespeare again. Pasting on a smile, Summer listened to the two converse before echoing goodnight. Thankfully, the man had other things to worry about now that his play was back on schedule.

Entering the bedroom, Summer looked around. It was rather plain but that was alright. She listened as the Doctor explained the sleeping arrangements. Though it might be a bit awkward sharing the bed, she wasn’t sure she could just let the Doctor sleep on the floor. She watched him walk toward the window and talk about Shakespeare.
“He is an interesting follow.” She agreed. “Not what I was expecting.” She glanced down thoughtfully. Looking back up at the Doctor, her face displayed concern. “You said witchcraft, Doctor.” She said. “But it isn’t, is it. It’s the creatures from Mars. They’re here as well.” As much as she would like to forget about Mars and how the Doctor almost went mad there, she had to know.

When he declared it wasn’t that, she cocked her head. “So not Mars.” She frowned. “I guess there really is black magic and witchcraft.” She said not surprised. She was travelling through time and space seeing so many things that would blow the normal human’s mind. She glanced sharply at him when he said it wasn’t real. “But you said…” Now she was really confused. “I’m sorry, I guess I’m not getting it.”

Listening to the Doctor go off, switching back and forth from talking to her to muttering to himself. But she was used to that. She listened to him talk as she contained a yawn. It wasn't that he was boring, it was just that she was tired. Thankfully, the Doctor suggested that they turn in. In addition, she was glad that the clothes she wore would be fine sleeping in for a night. Otherwise she would have figured out what they were going to do. As it was, it was going to be a bit awkward sharing the bed. Assuming of course he slept at all.

~~~
A scream echoed through the night waking Summer up with a start. Sitting up she saw that the Doctor was already heading out the door. Jumping up, she ran after him wiping the sleep from her eyes. Entering Shakespeare room they found a servant on the floor and the playwright, himself trying to shake the stupor of sleep from his eyes.
“What happened?” Summer asked the Doctor as he examined the girl. It was a bit suspicious that there were two unexplained deaths. The first was the official censor vowing that Shakespeare’s play would not go through and the other was a servant girl in Shakespeare’s room. Though it was very suspicious she wondered if he had anything to do with it. He didn’t seem stupid enough to have it tied back to him. But then again, maybe he didn’t think they would suspect. But how? It didn’t make sense. Something out the window caught her eye and she went over.
A witch, a genuine witch was flying off on a broomstick. No. It couldn’t be. Rubbing her eyes she looked again. Though almost out of sight she saw the woman circle once before disappearing. “There was a witch.” She said shaking her head. “Flying on a broom.”
Shakespeare lamented about the poor servant not understanding how she could have died of freight.
“The thing is, you’ve written about witches.” Summer said earning a frown from the playwright.
“I have?” He inquired.
Summer blanched as the Doctor informed her that he hadn’t yet. Great. Next keep her mouth shut. She looked at the Doctor. “But I saw a witch. The man died outside due to drowning though there was no water. She,” Summer nodded toward the poor servant. “Died of fright.” Though she wasn’t as smart as other people she wasn’t stupid. There was a connection and somehow it was tied to Shakespeare. She didn’t know how. “It has to be connected.”
She felt awful, it was her fault the thing was free. If people were killed because of her, she wouldn't know what she would do with herself. An she didn't want the Doctor getting mad at her for doing something so stupid. He'd probably yell at her just like did to that Dalek and ditch her someplace. But aside from that, she didn't want anyone getting hurt on her account. There had to be something she could do. If the Doctor was mad at her, she would understand entirely. A big part of her was already sure that this was one screw up that couldn't be brushed aside. As she heard gunfire and people yelling, another sharp pain of guilt struck her. Jen felt terrible. Van Statten and the guard talked and thankfully the Doctor was released. But if he hadn't, she would have happily taken a crowbar to the guy's face in order to persuade him to do the right thing.
The Doctor slipped his shirt and coat back on and told the guards to be armed. He then told her to go back to the TARDIS, probably where she couldn't mess anything else up. "I can't. I have to fix this. I'm staying." She said firmly, there was no way she'd turn her back on those she had just endangered. She couldn't do that, she couldn't stand by and let people fight. She would do something, somehow. The Doctor tried to talk her out of it but she just shook her head. "I don't care, this is my fault." Jen said. It was just one Dalek and they had numbers on their side, plus the Doctor. Jennifer wasn't feeling too defeated just yet. They hurried up the stairs, hoping to corner it and keep it from getting any further. Van Statten said that Level 35 would be the best place.
They still had a ways to go it seemed. More physical crap, Jen was in no position to complain about it though. Running and more running. Jennifer looked around, it seemed reports of the army falling were coming in over the walkie talkie. Jen heard that they were unable to hold it back and that it was closing the gap on them. She couldn't even begin to think about the people who were dying because of her. They made it, finally, to the proper level though they only got some time to catch their breath. "An elevator wouldn't kill the architecture, you know." She muttered to Van Statten. "Is there a place that's able to contain the Dalek? I mean, what are its weaknesses? It's got to have something right?" Jen looked from Van Statten to the Doctor.
Just then a call came over that a large group of the armed guards had located the Dalek near the weapons vault but there was still some civilians trapped. From the sounds of it, there was a boy there who was about her age. "I have to go and help them." Jen said. "I'll get them and bring them back here." She said. "I'm really sneaky when it counts."
"We could head up to the fifty-first floor, try to just seal the whole place and evacuate all survivors." Van Statten's assistant advised.
"I'll go and get whoever is still stuck down there and meet you guys at Level 51 then." Jennifer said. "I'm useless with you guys anyway, the least I can do is go down and see what's going on." She said and headed back down the stairs before the Doctor could do anything with the walkie talkie. "I'll see you later!" She waved to him and continued back down the way she had just come. She recalled that the weapon vault was on the 25'th Level so she didn't have too far to go down. "Hey, if anyone is still down there, I'm coming, we need to get movin' though." Jen said through the communication system. "Just stay out of its way." She said as she reached the 25'th Level. Jen ran down the hallway and made a sharp left. She saw a cluster of people hiding behind some boxes. She saw the coast was clear and motioned for them to hurry over to her.
One of them, a boy about her age, handed her a gun and thanked her for coming back. "Ditching people ain't my style." She grinned and took the gun and headed back for the stairs. The band of guards were staying behind to hold off the Dalek. She heard a series of sprinklers go off and she then heard more gunfire. The boy said the Dalek was ruthless, killing anyone it came across. As they wen up the stairs, Jen sent word to the others who were ahead of them. "I got some people with me." She said and went back to running. A minute later, it seemed the Dalek had exterminated everyone and was now chasing them. A woman pushed them forward while she stalled to give them time to catch up to Van Statten. There was word they would be closing the bulkheads and to hurry up. "Hold on!" Jen said as she and the boy who had introduced himself as Adam, were now running up to the 46'th Level. As they rounded the next corner, the Dalek floated upwards and Jen looked to Adam.
"Hurry!" He said and they sprinted to the 51'st Level, as they were nearing it, Jen reached out for Adam's hand but he swatted it away and pushed her back into the wall as he dove under the closing door. "Seems we got different styles, see ya!" He rolled under and Jen got up and saw the Dalek moving toward her.
"You totally suck!" She yelled at the door and got to her feet. She at least had the walkie talkie. "Seems chivalry is dead around here." She muttered into the device and kicked the wall in anger. She backed up as the Dalek advanced. "This is my fault though, he shouldn't have had to die for my mistake." Jen sighed and swallowed. "I don't necessarily blame the jerk for tripping me if we both weren't gonna make it." Jen looked at the Dalek as it studied her. What was it waiting for? "I'm really sorry Doctor, I totally screwed up. But I wanted to thank you for everything you've done for me, it meant the world to me and I feel like I-"
"Exterminate!" The Dalek interrupted, shooting the walkie talkie rather than the brunette.
She was right to voice concern based on their trip to Mars a while ago but it wasn't the same. He shook his head. "No, it's not them, don't worry." He said to her. Summer then mentioned how he had contradicted himself in terms of there being but not being witchcraft in their midst. It was tough to explain. He knew humans perceived magic differently but in this case, there were creatures could use magic, in a sense, but they weren't magical by any means. They were aliens, nothing too glossy like those from Harry Potter, which was a good series. "I know it doesn't make much sense." He frowned a little. "But trust me when I say it is but also, isn't witchcraft." The Doctor told her. He would need a lot more information before he could make any moves.
Something told him, however, that he didn't have a lot of time to solve such a mystery. That always seemed to be the case wherever they went. "Clearly something is going on with Shakespeare, he's under some sort of spell but who would gain something from the play continuing as planned? Clearly they want it to go off without a hitch and yet time has told us that there is not such thing. Something is going to happen tomorrow night." He began to mutter to himself. "What what what?" He smacked his forehead a few times, as if the answer itself was lodged somewhere and all that he needed was to set it free. Sadly it didn't do much good. He turned back to Summer, he could apologize yet again for such odd circumstances but it seemed she was used to such odd patterns in their travels.
It was quite good to have company.
He was so used to having Summer around, showing her places and solving riddles, that he couldn't help but worry that they couldn't keep traveling forever. All of his companions left in some way or another. Be it death, of their own free will or if they were taken from him. But he was certain that should something happen to Summer, should she be taken off like she had often in the past, he would do anything to get her back. The Doctor noticed Summer looking a bit tired. The yawn wasn't a sure fire indicator though. People often yawned not because of fatigue or boredom but because their brains weren't getting a good amount of oxygen. He decided though, that she must be tired after wandering about in such an era. "Let's turn in for the night hm?" He smiled, though his internal thoughts weren't keen on settling down anytime soon.
Summer headed into bed and he sat at the end, attempting to amuse her with stories until she fell asleep. When she did, he was awfully tempted to go out and do some exploring on his own but he had learned his lesson and that was to stick together. The Doctor contented himself with thinking about the plot at hand. About two hours passed before there was a scream. He hurried for the door and looked over his shoulder to see the girl with him was already wide awake and ready to investigate. For a moment he wanted to suggest she go back to bed and get some rest but he knew her well enough to know that his advice would fall on deaf ears. A human with bubbling curiosity would find it hard to go back to sleep with such calamity going on around them. "No rest for the wicked!"
Following the source of the cry, they entered Shakespeare's room and saw another death. The Doctor didn't bother examining her and instead hurried to the window to take a look. Shakespeare wasn't a killer and his efforts needed to be focused now. "What happened?" He turned around to the bard as Summer had asked the same thing. He saw the figure and he knew exactly who he was up against. His stomach churned. "This is gonna be tricky." He shook his head and turned to hear Summer blurt out about what the bard had written. He physically winced and shook his head. She couldn't keep slipping comments like that. It was dangerous and could alter the reality they already knew. He held up a hand, not wanting to linger on the idea of witches. "Not yet he hasn't..."
It wouldn't be good.
"Come on." He grabbed Summer's hand and hurried out the door, not wanting to converse about such things. William Shakespeare was clearly involved but the Doctor was sure that he was unaware of it. It would do them no good to talk in circles. "We need to do some looking around." He told her as he let go of her hand and headed out of the Inn quickly. He turned back and waited for the girl to catch up before he quickly headed to the Globe Theater but upon entering it as it was now empty, he noticed something. "This isn't right." He ran up to the stage and stood on it. He spun around and soon Shakespeare caught up with him. "Why isn't this designed to your specifications?'
"The man, Peter Streete, had thought sound would be carried better with his own work."
"Where is he now?"
"Admitted to Bedlam, I'm afraid." He replied.
"Oh dear." The Doctor turned to Summer. It was perhaps midnight now but they couldn't waste any time, in less than twenty-four hours, history would be changed. "Come on!" He said and jumped off the stage and ran off, intent on getting some proper answers and confirmation to his dark theory.
If the Doctor had more time, he would have given Van Statten a harsh talking to. The idiot still wanted the Dalek alive not carrying that so many people have died already and that so many more will die if they don’t take care of the Dalek. Dashing up the stairs, the Doctor didn’t wait to see if the others kept up. The quicker they could lock the place down the better. As it was the Dalek had already syphoned most of the power off from the base when it had attempted to search the internet and all incoming signals for messages from anything Dalek.
At the Assistant’s suggestion, they continued past Level 35, with the intent to seal the whole thing off. As they continued up the stairs, reports came back that civilians were trapped. “Jen!” The Doctor called out as she turned and dashed back down. She was going to herself killed. He would have headed after her but Van Statten blocked his way.
“We need to have everything ready to seal off otherwise the creature will escape.” He stated.
Realizing he was right the Doctor turned and glared at him. “Anything happens to her and I’m holding you fully responsible!” He declared dashing back up the stairs.
Reaching Level 51, the Doctor and the others found the command post and started to get the place ready to shut down the vault. “We only have power for one time so we need to make it count.” The Doctor said, knowing they had to get the civilians out but keep the Dalek in. Worse comes to worse, he would have to seal in anyone left to avoid having the Dalek escape.
“What if we try to reason with it?” Van Statten asked looking over at the Doctor. “It is sentient, right?” He inquired.
The Doctor looked over at him. “What’s the closest town?” He asked.
“Salt Lake City.” Van Statten replied a bit confused at the change of subject.
“Population?” The Doctor waited for the man to reply before quickly snapping. “All dead.”
The humans looked at him as if he was crazy. “But it’s just one Dalek.” The assistant said a bit ashen.
“That’s all that is needed.” The Doctor said turning and looking at the computer. “Alright, what’s the access codes?” He demanded.
“Let me.” Van Statten said coming over and sitting down. Quickly entering the information he grinned. “I haven’t had this much fun in ages.”
The Doctor glared over at him disgusted. People were dying and he thought this whole thing was a game. When the walkie-talkie came alive with Jen’s voice, the Doctor snatched it away from the guard and spoke into it as Van Statten got the monitor up. “Hurry.” He ordered. “We have to close the vault so it can’t escape. You need to get to Level 51 before we do. Otherwise, you will be trapped.”
“She’s not going to make it.” Van Statten declared watching as the Dalek closed in. “We have to close the vault.”
“In a minute.” The Doctor snapped. Watching the screen, he willed for Jen to go faster. Holding up the walkie-talkie he spoke. “Jen, you need to hurry. We have to close the bulkhead doors.” He paused. “We can’t wait much longer.”
“I have power to the bulkheads.” Van Statten declared. “But it’s quickly going critical. It is either now or never.”
Watching them come around the bend and head toward the next level the Doctor hesitated. “Doctor!” Van Statten yelled, worry for his own life causing him to start panicking as the Dalek started closing in.
“I’m sorry.” The Doctor whispered hitting the button. The massive bulkheads slowly started to close. For a second it looked as if she was going to make it and then the kid pushed her aside in attempt to make it himself, sealing her behind with the Dalek.
Slamming the walkie-talkie down the Doctor hit the desk, ignoring the pain. When Jen spoke over the walkie-talkie he quickly snatched it up. But before she could finish or he could say anything the Dalek screamed exterminate and cut the feeds. Both the walkie-talkie and the video monitor hissed with static but nothing else.
The Doctor shook his head. “She was my responsibility.” He declared. “I brought her into this mess and I should have taken care of her.” He brushed off the assistant’s attempt at comfort and glared at Van Statten. “You and your precious toy.” He snarled. “I hope you’re happy.” He shook his head and turned to walk off.
“I’m sorry.” Van Statten said looking down. “I just wanted my collection…"
“Your collection?” The Doctor spun around cutting him off. “Let me tell you something Mr. Van Statten. One day humanity travels to the stars. They colonize new worlds and meet new species. In such a short time, humans become a major galactic player forming a great space empire.” He shook his head. “They were part of something.”
“I just wanted to touch the stars.” Van Statten replied.
“More like drag them to earth and bury them beneath piles of dirt and concrete.” The Doctor shot back. He sighed, the weight of his long years pulling heavy on him. He had failed her. Just like he had failed his own people.
Following after the Doctor, Summer tried to keep up. She wasn’t too sure what they were looking for but the Doctor seemed to have an idea. When he let go of her hand and dashed off, Summer wondered if she was going to lose him. For the second time in the past two days she frowned at the long dress. Already she had almost tripped a few times and now she might lose the Doctor…again.
Thankfully, he had paused to let her catch up. Reaching the theatre that they were at she frowned as he looked around. What had the theatre have to do with any of this? Was it tied into the plays and Shakespeare? Speaking of which…she refrained a sigh as he caught up and came up beside them. Thankfully, he didn’t give her much attention though it could have been because the Doctor started asking him questions right away. When Shakespeare mentioned the architecture was in Bedlam she exchanged a look with the Doctor. She wasn’t really sure what that was but apparently the Doctor did. Calling for them to follow he once again took off.
“Quite an interesting friend you have.” Shakespeare stated before Summer could take off. “Is he always like this?”
“You have no idea.” Summer replied looking at him. Afraid she would now not be able to catch up with the Doctor she swallowed her pride and glanced back at Shakespeare. “What is Bedlam?” She inquired.
“It’s a madhouse.” He replied. “The insane go there.” Turning he handed a copy of his script to one of the actors who had come out to see what was going on. “Copy these and memorize it.” He ordered. “Make it sharp. The queen might show and we want to be prepared.” He looked over at Summer only to see she had taken off again.
As soon as Shakespeare had replied, Summer shook her head. Why was she not surprised? Not waiting around for him she took off after the Doctor. However, it didn’t take long before Shakespeare was back up next to her, his long legs unhindered by the confining of a dress. “So, tell me what is it like where you come from?” He inquired.
“Different.” Summer replied not really wanting to talk about herself and not sure how to state it without giving away the fact they were time travelers.
“How so?” Shakespeare asked persistently. “Are all the women as lovely as you?”
That stopped her. She looked over at him. “Aren’t you married?” She inquired remembering something about it from history.
Shakespeare gave a grin. “Alas she is in the country while we are here in town.” He stated. “Besides, I’m just making conversation.” He replied innocently. “Unless of course you want more…” Resisting the urge to slap him Summer turned coldly and continued on. “My apologies,” Shakespeare said coming up after her. “I meant no insult. I’m just stating how much I admire...”
“Doctor.” Summer said cutting the man off and going over to where the Doctor stood waiting. Looping her arm through his she gave him a smile, though part of it was more to get Shakespeare to shut up. Spotting the hospital, her smile quickly faded. “Is this the place?” She inquired, the cries in the night sending shivers down her spine.
Following the Doctor inside she winced as the bailiff or keeper suggested wiping a few people for entertainment. Thankfully, the Doctor turned him down but she wondered again how different everything was for her time. At least here. In the future prisoners were not tortured for amusement despite what some people might think.
Keeping close to the Doctor, she followed the keeper down the hall to find the man they were searching for. She hoped that Shakespeare would back off and for the moment he seemed content to do so. He was not at all anything she expected.
Coming to a cell, the Keeper stepped aside so they could enter. “Call when you need to leave.” He said locking it behind them.
Summer stared down at the poor man huddled in the corner. He was in rags and he looked thin but what really concerned her was the terror she could see in the way he was rolled up and on the bit of the face she could see. Whatever happened to this man, it had scared the dickens out of him. She looked over at the Doctor. “Can we help him?” She asked not wanting to see him remain like this.
When the Dalek cut off the camera circuits and destroyed her only means of communication, Jen was rather confused. If it wanted to kill her, it wouldn't have bothered with all that. Jennifer looked to the Dalek as it neared her. She wasn't sure a witty remark or taunt would go over very well so she held her tongue and her breath. "You don't want to kill me, do you?" She realized. "If I'm alive, if means you can use me as a bargaining chip." She glared and remembered she still had the gun. She pulled it out from behind her and gripped it. "If I'm alive, then you'll get your way. But if I'm dead, then that doesn't stop the Doctor from destroying you." After hearing herself say such a thing, she found herself suddenly confused. The Dalek had killed so many people on the base and yet the Doctor was also holding it accountable for the war.
But the Doctor and Dalek escaped and now carried the burden of being the only ones left of their kind. And in that regard, Jen couldn't see herself pulling the trigger on herself or the Dalek. Wasn't being lonely punishment enough? And if the Dalek hesitated to kill her, didn't that also count for something? "If what I'm understanding is right...you can do whatever you want, you don't have to fight anymore. There's no more war. You don't have to kill people. And people don't have to be afraid of you anymore. The Doctor has changed and so can you." Jen suggested. The Dalek studied her and then rolled away and Jen swallowed. It sensed her apprehension, her fear, her doubt, her hope and it was driving him mad.
"I feel your worry." It said and then pointed its stalk back toward the camera in the corridor. There was some static before a connection was reestablished. "Doc-tor." The Dalek spoke and Jen walked over to it as it pointed its laser at her. "I have your com-panion." It said. "I will kill her if you do not open the bulkheads." It said. Jen glanced up and saw the camera back on. She looked back to the Dalek beside her, unsure of what to say to it now. She couldn't provoke it. That would be stupid. It had a chance just like the Doctor. Why couldn't they just stop fighting? She still held the gun in her hand but had no purpose for it. "Open the bulkheads." The Dalek said again.
"Don't." Jen spoke up. "I think it's starting to feel, I think I can talk to it and-"
"What good are emotions if you will not save the woman you love?" The Dalek proposed.
"What?" Jen snorted at the Dalek. Now was not the time to making such accusations! It was new to feeling, what did it know about love? Or was it not misinformed? Jen shook her head slightly, fairly certain her blush would go unnoticed at a time like this. She really wasn't sure if she wanted the Doctor to do it or not. If she could reason with it, maybe it was best if she talked to the Dalek alone? But on the other hand, she'd feel safer with the Doctor, even if he had scared her earlier.
The flirting was, he'd admit, getting a bit annoying for the Doctor. He couldn't imagine how poor Summer must be feeling. Though the Doctor's mind was kept at bay with a bigger issue coming to the front of his mind. Witches. He needed one thing, just one to reassure him that he was on the right track. When they got to the cell, they found a man in distress. Summer asked if he could be helped. "Let me see." He said and bent down to the man gave him a friendly smile. "Hello, I'm the Doctor. These people here, we mean you no harm." He said and put his hands on either side of the man's face. He then began to speak telepathically with the man to unearth what was going on and what brought him to such a place to begin with.
It was revealed that the man, Peter, had been visited by witches, that they wanted their design to come to life and that they were located on All Hallows Street. Suddenly a witch flashed into the cell and the Doctor looked up, already knowing what would come next. Before he could stop the woman, she touched Peter's heart and he died. The Doctor set him down and stood up, his gaze darkening. The witch then look around at Shakespeare, Summer and then himself. "Who shall I pick next...who who who..." She looked around and the Doctor stepped forward. "Oh you seem so eager, you smell so new...why were you at the Inn and now here too?" The witch asked him. "You have no power over me!"
The Doctor didn't have time for games.
"I have power in words." He said. "Let's see here...think think think. Female humanoid...shapes and words. Words and shapes. 14 sides let's see." The Doctor muttered and looked back to the entity. "Fourteen! The fourteen stars of the Rexel planetary configuration! Yes, that's it." He smiled and took a deep breath. "Creature, I name you Carrionite!" He declared. Instantly, the witch burst into flames and vanished. "I named her, it's old magic. It's just a different sort of science. You lot, you chose mathematics. Given the right string of numbers, the right equation, you can split the atom. Carrionites use words instead. And they picked Shakespeare himself to do their bidding because he's a clever clever wordsmith." He deduced.
The Doctor wasn't out of the woods yet, so to speak.
The hurried out of the ward and headed back into the town so they could talk about the matters at hand. Once they were back in Shakespeare's room, the Doctor voiced more of his thoughts. "The Carrionites disappeared way back at the dawn of the universe. Nobody was sure if they were real or legend." Summer then wondered what they could want. "Like most aliens who invade earth, sadly a new empire on Earth. A world of bones and blood and witchcraft." He folded his arms. "My thought is that they are in fact using you, they're making you write the play. I need to know the ending." The Doctor directed at the playwright. "Summer and I need to go find All Hallows Street, you must go and stop the play." He told William.
"Come on, Summer!" He grabbed her hand and hurried out of the room.
Slamming the younger man against the wall, the Doctor glared at the boy that Jen had gone back and saved. “You pushed her aside.” He said, anger evident. The kid had picked a bad time to come into the command center and his regret at coming in at this moment was evident.
“You closed the bulkhead on her.” He shot back trying to shift the blame to someone else.
Disgusted the Doctor pushed him aside. It would be something that he would regret for the rest of his life. “And I killed her.” He said shaking his head. “She was such a young thing full of life.” He said to no one in particular.
“Doctor.” Goddard, Van Statten’s assistant said interrupting him. “The communications.”
Turning, the Doctor saw that the monitor was flickering and within a few seconds there was the Dalek and Jen. “Jen.” He cried moving forward. She was safe. For now. But why hadn’t the Dalek killed her? It had with everyone else. It was its nature. When the Dalek stated he would kill her if they didn’t open the bulkheads the Doctor’s heart sank. So that was why he kept her alive. Use her as a bargaining chip.
“Doctor, we can’t.” Goddard said looking over at him as if knowing what he was thinking. “You said it yourself it will kill everyone.” She waved toward the monitor. “Even your friend thinks it is a bad idea.”
The Doctor looked toward the monitor where the Dalek sat, waiting for a response. “I killed her once, I’m not doing it again.” With a few buttons he set the bulkhead to open. They watched as the Dalek and Jen made it through the opening.
“Good going.” Van Statten said glaring at him. “What do we do now, you bleeding heart? What the heck do we do?”
“Give it a rest.” His assistant snapped. She looked at the Doctor. “Now what?”
“Kill it when it gets here.” Adam stated speaking up.
“None of our weapons work and the alien tech is in the vault.” Van Statten replied gloomily. “I’m too young to die.” He moaned.
“Only the catalogued ones.” Adam replied ignoring the last comment. He looked at the Doctor hoping to make up for what he did. “There are a lot in my office still needing worked on.”
“Isn’t your office in the vault?” The Doctor snapped remembering how the boy had been below.
Adam shook his head. “No. I only went down because I heard that they got it to talk. My office is a floor down.”
Looking at him the Doctor spun around. “Show me.” He ordered grabbing a radio on the way out. “Keep me posted on where the Dalek is.” He called leaving the room.
It took them only a few minutes but they quickly reached Adam’s lab. Going over to the pile of “weapons” the Doctor started to go through them. “Broken. Broken. Hair dryer.”
“Doctor, the Dalek is past your level and is almost here.” Goddard informed him. “Van Statten took off. It’s almost upon him.”
Grabbing a weapon that would actually work, the Doctor took off toward the stairs. Despite the fact he disliked the man, he could not let another person die to this monster. “Is Jen safe?” He inquired taking the steps two at a time.
“For now.” Goddard replied. “The Dalek seems content to just use her as a shield.”
Coming into the large atrium, the Doctor dropped the communication device and armed the weapon. The Dalek seemed to have decided to leave Van Statten alone and had blasted a hole into the ceiling. What was really surprising however, was that the Dalek had opened up its shell revealing the mutant inside. It was a perfect opportunity to kill it once and for all. Then Jen moved in the way.
“What are you doing?” He asked pointing the weapon down slightly so as to not accidently hit her. “Move. I have to eliminate it. Destroy it before it escapes.” However, his companion refused to let him shoot it. “It’s a Dalek.” He cried. “It has killed hundreds of people. I have to end it. The Daleks destroyed my home, my race, my people.” When Jen stated it was changing he shook his head. “A Dalek cannot change. It knows one thing. Killing.” Steadying his hands he gripped the weapon more tightly. He could not let it live. He just couldn’t. One Dalek could result in a new Dalek empire. Everything he had sacrificed would be for nothing.
“You would make a good Da-lek.” The creature said looking toward him.
His jaw clenched, the Doctor raised up his gun but Jen was still in the way. An internal battle raged. He could push Jen aside and end this once and for all. But Jen’s look…Her words. She was disappointed and even though he shouldn’t, he did not want to let her down. Angrily he tossed the weapon aside. “Fine.” He said. They would all probably die but he would leave it be…for now. When the Dalek asked why they had survived the Doctor sighed, weighted down by all that they had gone through. “I don’t know.” He said shaking his head. When it mentioned it was the last he shook his head. “You aren’t even Dalek anymore.” He said. “You somehow absorbed Jen’s DNA. I’m sorry.”
When Jen looked at him confused, he explained. “A Dalek is a creature engineered. They believe that they are perfection. Anything else other than true Dalek DNA is an abomination to them.” He told her. “They’d rather die.” He shook his head. Though he couldn’t bring himself to pity the Dalek he was glad that he wouldn’t have to kill it himself. The way Jen looked at him when he had the weapon saddened him. Maybe he had lost it but she didn’t know the truth. Thankfully, she wouldn’t think worse of him. Though, no doubt after this she would want to head home. Who would want to travel with a bitter, raged filled Time Lord? He wouldn’t. It was a shame really. He was starting to enjoy traveling again. Enjoy having a new companion. It almost made him forget about the war – at least temporary. For a short time he had almost been happy.
The Dalek self-destructed and the Doctor turned away. What’s done was done. Goddard led some guards into the room and they quickly arrested Van Statten. “We’re sealing this place up.” Goddard said coming over to them. “You both might want to leave.”
Nodding the Doctor headed toward the stairs. At her quizzical look, he gave a small smile. “We have other means to leave.” He told her.
Summer watched as the Doctor went over to talk to the man. She frowned as he placed hands on either side of the man’s face and seemed to just stay there hunched, not speaking. not Was this some sort of alien thing? She made a note to ask the Doctor later. “What’s he doing?” Shakespeare whispered not knowing either.
Summer shrugged. “I’m not sure. He’s actually a bit of a mystery.” She stated.
Shakespeare glanced over at her with a question in his eyes. “So, you are traveling with a man you barely know?” He inquired. “And you get so annoyed that I’m flirting with you having a wife. What woman runs off with a man she doesn’t know?” He inquired.
Summer frowned and then blushed as she realized what he was implying to. “No. It’s not…. We aren’t…” She turned away. “It’s not like that.”
However, Shakespeare just nodded. “Uh huh.” He said not completely convinced. After all, a beautiful young woman, a fairly handsome young man both traveling together and not related; something had to be amiss.”
Suddenly a witch suddenly appeared causing both of them to jump. She touched Peter’s heart causing him to keel over. Summer swallowed and took a step back as the witch turned, eager to take another person out.
Thankfully, the Doctor did not seem one bit scared. He quickly stepped forward and ignoring her, talked aloud to himself trying to figure out who she was. It was always fascinating to watch him when he was like this. Rambling to himself trying to remember something or figure out what was going on. Despite the witch, Summer felt herself smiling. He would take care of them. That much she knew. Then the Doctor got it. Turning, he spoke to the witch calling her out. Summer blinked surprised as the woman burst into flames, disappearing.
Turning she looked at the Doctor confused but he, not waiting for the question, burst out an explanation. Then turning he headed out of the cell with Summer and Shakespeare trying to keep up. “What do they want?” Summer inquired at a pause in the Doctor’s explanation. Stopping he looked at her and folded his arms. Summer winced when he stated they wanted to make a new empire on earth. Weren’t there a million other planets out in the galaxy? Why did everyone like to come to earth? What was so special about the tiny planet at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy?
She did not get to think too much on that before the Doctor grabbed her hand and she found herself running again. At least she did not have to worry about facing Shakespeare and having him either a) flirt with her or b) think she was some sort of companion and not in the good sense. Leaving Bedlam, Summer tried to keep up with the Doctor’s strides. Even if she was wearing pants, the Doctor was still taller than her and his long legs would quickly got faster than her dress or no.
As they ran, Summer slowly turned over the conversation from Bedlam in her head. So if the witch or Carrionite as the Doctor called her used words and Shakespeare was excellent with words was that why they were here instead of some other planet? It still seemed strange that not many planets had individuals as good with words as Shakespeare. As they reached the street Summer thought of something else. “Wait, the world did not turn into an empire of these Carrionites.” Summer stated. “I would have remembered that. Wouldn’t I?” Time travel was always so confusing. It gave her a headache if she really thought about how something could change something else. Would that mean she would disappear? When the Doctor mentioned Back to the Feature, she frowned. “The novel?” She asked. When he mentioned the movie she shrugged. “I never saw it.” She said apologetically. “But I get the idea.”
She looked at all the houses. “Great, so which one do we check?” As if her words had some sort of magic, one of the doors opened. “Oh. That was easy.”
Sticking close to the Doctor she entered the house. Seeing a witch-Carrirate woman there, Summer swallowed as the woman talked. However, she wasn’t going to let the Doctor have all the fun, especially now that she knew what to do. “I got this.” She told the Doctor a bit confident. Stepping forward she pointed at the woman. “I name thee Carrionite!” She exclaimed. The woman shrieked and shrunk back before suddenly laughing. Very confused, Summer glanced at the Doctor. When he explained it only worked once, she blushed. Great. Now she looked like an idiot. It was times like this that she wondered why the Doctor kept her around. She wasn’t smart and heaven knows she wasn’t pretty. So why did he bring her along?
Then the witch stepped forward. “He’s right.” She stated. “It only works once. But catch this – A little girl in a box, I name thee Summer Fox.”
Something cold hit Summer and her vision quickly started to fade. She held up a hand weakly trying to call for the Doctor but everything blacked out and she fell unconscious.
