My solution to all those cat problems comes in many shades. My own cats were punished and taught certain things were a no-no, like eating my ear when I was trying to sleep. Of course, it wasn't an intentional thing, I don't react well to being messed with when I'm asleep and it, sorta, got punched in the head.

Don't feel sorry for the cat, he was the dumb ass. And the attacking my ears was only one thing he did. I love cats, but I'm not one of those "Let them get away with whatever the hell they want and feel sorry for them when they get hurt" types. I'm a "I love you, but I will discipline you if the needs arise. If you get hurt goofing off, I'll love on you, comfort you, but not let you do it again" type of person. Perhaps I'm just odd.

I have found that trying to discipline a cat is like trying to get a river to flow the other way

Maybe for you. Cats learn after a few times that continuing to do it is not beneficial. And it's not like I intentionally punched Firefly in the head, or even that it was a punch every time. But eventually, he learned.

The only thing about what I did was it wasn't intentional, nor was he an exception. Hell, my wife and I beat on each other in our sleep.
