BATTLE STATIONS!

Castle Rivergate

Story

Story? What? We haven't got time for that, just pick up a weapon and report to your posts you idiots! Can't you see those barbarians charging at us through the trees to the north? I doubt they care very much for a story, in fact, I reckon they're just here for our heads. Yes, of course that's why they're here - can't say I remember the last time they made a social call.

What barbarians? Are you simple? How long have you been stationed here? Oh that's right, you're one of them that arrived yesterday. Well, consider this your induction:

We're getting attacked by a horde of damned savages. Eight feet tall, long messy hair and matted beards. They like to swing heavy maces to crush a man's skull, or sometimes they like to get really fancy with an axe and cleave a man's limb. They cover 'em selves in tattoos of all kinds of nonsense, they reckon it protects 'em from our arrows. Well, I ain't seen it work yet, that's for sure.

Anyway, enough loitering, head to the armoury, get yourself a weapon and some armour, then get to the battlements. They'll be hitting us from the north first, like they always flippin' do, so that's where I'd suggest you go congregate.

OI, and remember! This castle is the only bloody thing keeping your families back home safe and sound, so if you're thinking of running, you better hope enough of us are mad enough to stay. Otherwise... well, you ain't gonna get far, let's put it that way.

Character Sheet

Didn't you BLOODY hear me? We haven't got time for this rubbish. Grab a frickin' weapon, head to the blasted walls and get ready! GO!

Cheat Sheet

What's in the armoury?

Medieval stuff! See examples below - but choose whatever you want, so long as it don't shoot lasers or bullets.

don't doubt the the parasol, it's powerful. But in honesty it can be a weapon if you look at styles like bartitsu or savate but I think he may have just got a picture of examples

I wondered what that was doing in there, but it was the best picture I could find that gave a wide variety.

Okay, looks like we got people, I'll be getting up the real thing in a short while.

You seem to have neglected the magic and mysticism question. What limitations were you prefer? Will the barbarians possess great beasts they have tamed? Will they have shamans?

The Priest on the Keep's bulwarks, does he have healing?

*Scratches head* I was not expecting to have to dawdle too much on what's what - it's a free form, hack n slash RP that you're getting thrown into head first.

Well I be reckoning that everyone likes magic, so I say: go wild. The "barbarians" are an undefined force of attackers, you're all supposed to be newly arrived soldiers at the castle with no-to-little experience of what's been happening in the area. I was hoping that the players collectively would give shape and life to our adversaries. All we know at the moment is that they're tall, strong and full of murderous intent.

To make for a better narrative though, I always go by the rule "What I can do, they can do better", that way your character avoids being God whilst at the same time gets to celebrate his/her victories more over an otherwise superior enemy.

I actually really like the idea of beasts. Hmmm..... I hadn't thought about adding a supernatural element into this world, and I don't want to take it too far (this doesn't feel like a high fantasy setting to me), but I might add in some creatures that don't exist in our world, if there are no objections. I personally believe it would be awesome to see how people react to some creepy crawlies or something of the like.

That'd be fine. The "barbarians" are just the mainstay of the enemy horde. They might use all kinds of beast, from rabid dogs to enraged hippos - or fantasy-based animals. As for magic, I don't mind it either way, but I myself always aim for nitty-gritty sword and shield work. Whoever wants to cast a fire ball may do so, just be careful the barbarians don't suddenly show up with shaman to launch lightning bolts at you!
