"Damn this place is freezing! You got a light?"
Two men were stationed on top of a wintery mountain in the Alps. Anyone would see two mountain climbers, but in reality, they were just above the entrance to a mountain based that is said to once belong to Doctor Johann Schmidt, the former leader of Hydra. A bitter chill blew on the two, them shuddering in their winter gear. They both held assault guns, staring at the rather beautiful sight. One man puffed out a cloud of smoke from his lighted cigarette. "Don't know why we even guard this place... No one's going to ever find it! this hasn't been used since World War II!"
As the two talked rather loudly, a man in a red white and blue uniform silently climbed the mountain towards them. It was rather easy for him, even with the rather heavy shield strapped to his back. He didn't mind the heights, and it didn't tire him out, what he was nervous about was slipping. For Captain Steve Rogers' recon mission, he couldn't wear a harness without being loud. Yes, he just scaled a mountain without any gear.
As he climbed a few more yards until the top, a rock gave way under his hand. He silently widened his eyes as he caught himself, holding his body with one hand, dangling, not daring to move and give away his position. the two men stopped talking. they obviously heard something. Steve slowly used his free hand to pull out a pistol from his side holster, ready for a fire fight, even if he was hanging off the side of a very tall mountain.
He heard the crunching of snow underneath some boots, slowly moving towards the edge. Steve slowly started to climb again, until he was right at the edge. He then saw a pair of legs, stopping cautiously at the edge as well. Steve in a flash grabbed the man's leg, and pulled him off the cliff, his screaming echoing off the mountains. Captain America leapt up, firing a couple rounds at the other guy before rolling on his shoulder, and grabbing his shield in a fluid motion. Bullets hit the iconic shield, but falling at Steve's feet. He took off the shield, and swung it at the man. It hit him hard in the chest, and flew right back at Steve. he caught it, and put it back on his arm, the unconscious man lying in the snow.
Steve landed on the metal floor, the hatch to the cold mountain letting a bit of snow in. The door didn't stand a chance against Cap's shield. "I'm in." Rogers quietly spoke in the comms system in his wrist. The Cap looked as patriotic as ever. Blue armor with red and white stripes on his waist, and a white star in the center. He had his iconic red white and blue shield on his left hand, and a pistol in his right. His piercing blue eyes looked around. It seemed clear for now. But from the information Fury gave him earlier, he knew it wasn't.
Steve ran silently, and quickly. He saw a man walking down the hall the same way he was. Cap leapt up and hit the back of his head hard with the shield, not breaking the momentum as the body toppled over. he saw two others as well. He threw the shield at a man walking over to him, jump kicked a man in the chest, and grabbed the shield as it ricocheted off the wall. He memorized the blueprints of the base. Not only from the S.H.I.E.L.D. data base, but also because 70 years ago, he was in this very base.
"Peggy..."
"I'm here...."
"I'm gonna need a rain check on that dance."
As Steve kept running in and knocking out soldiers, he knew he was getting closer. He was being sent in to receive lost information about the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D... It was so much different now... The place clearly wasn't used in years. It was like it was out of time. just like him.
"All right. A week next Saturday at The Stork Club."
"You've got it."
"Eight o'clock on the dot. Don't you dare be late. Understood?"
Steve turned the corner, and dove away in surprise that five men walked towards him. They now knew he was here. Cap from around the corner threw his shield, knowing the exact angle where the shield needed to hit the wall to hit at least one of the men. As the shield went flying Steve fired off a few shots, hitting two of them, one being hit by the shield, and the other one still firing. His shield landed on the floor a few feet away. Steve dove for it, grabbing it, and in a roll used it to block the oncoming bullets, He inched closer until he was in front of him, swung the shield to smack the gun away, and used his free hand to pistol whip him. He also took out the groaning body that got hit with the shield first.
He opened the door to a now modernized version of what it used to be. Steve put the shield back on his back, and walked over to a console. He wasn't yet tech savvy, but the tech guys back home said he only had to insert the thumb drive. he plugged it in, and watched the screen auto fill everything for him.
"You know, I still don't know how to dance."
"I'll show you how. Just be there."
"We'll have the band play something slow....I'd hate to step on your..."
The sudden flash of being back on the aircraft carrier appeared in his head. How the only way to save thousands of lives was to sacrifice himself. To leave everything behind so that the world can live without the fear of Hydra or the Nazis any longer... He then thought of his very first kiss. On the back of a moving truck chasing after the same air craft carrier... To anyone it would sound badass, and heroic... But it was one of the hardest things he's ever done... But he wasn't going to say he regretted it. he did what was right.
The data was uploaded. he snapped back to reality when he heard shouts coming from the hall. Steve grabbed the hard drive, and ran out of the door. "There he is! Shoot the bastard!" Steve ran the opposite way, the bullets hitting the shield as he desperately ran. Although he was a super soldier, bullets still hurt very much.
He made his way to the main room, where a large window showed the Alps mountain range. It wasn't ideal, but it was his only choice. Steve took off the shield from his back, and held it in front of them. Then he dove out the window.
"Here's the thumb drive."
Steve Rogers stood in military fashion in front of Nick Fury's desk. Steve was covered in dirt and pine needles from the mountain, and his face covered in small cuts. Nick stared at him, and nodded. "Good work... A lot of important stuff on this drive..." He said, eying Steve. He knew he had something on his mind. "Got something to tell me? Or we gonna have a staring contest?"
"I was just wondering if..."
"Ooooh... I understand... I'm sorry, Steve. This isn't for your eyes... high ranks only... But in a few days this might slip in to the databases for Level 6 access...." Nick said slyly. He knew he wanted to know if Peggy Carter was mentioned in the files he obtained. He couldn't blame the guy. "Why don't you take a day off? You have been working hard for a while now."
Steve slowly shook his head. "You're right. I still got a list of things I missed in the past seven decades to catch up on..." He said half jokingly. he still had to watch Episode VI of Star Wars, as well as the "Fuck" era of the 1970's. "You're dismissed until we need you again, Cap. Good work."
Steve Rogers pulled up to his Brooklyn apartment complex on his classic style Motorcycle . As he climbed off, he noticed a moving truck parked out... He wondered if he got a new neighbor. The apartment next to his has been empty for a couple of months, ever since he started living there actually... he figured it wasn't just a coincidence.
He climbed the front steps, stepping out of the way of a couple movers, giving a smile and nod as they stared at him awe struck.
