I feel like that level of genetic modification would not only be extremely resource intensive, but likely require ages of physical therapy to cope with such huge changes in terms of motor function. It'd also likely be an incredibly painful change unless the subject was put far, far, far, under. Imho, even with such advanced tech, such drastic modifications would still most likely be incredibly complicated.

Is it really that hard to use genetic modification to get rid of hereditary diseases?

It's possible, but every genetic modification comes at a price..and not in cash I mean.

The problems surrounding genetic tampering are that the smallest alteration changes us a great deal. After all, Chimpanzees and humans share over 98% genetics, yet look how very different we are. Just tweaking a single chromosome would cause unexpected results, and it really is like trying to paint a Da Vinci in the dark, upside down and with an audience demanding your attention. And don't forget the bats.

Humans, however, are mutating all the time. It's how our species has evolved over the millions of years to adapt to the planet we live in. If you were to alter the atmosphere by the slightest amount, we would be adversely affected in some rather nasty ways.
If you were to make out you are doing genetic tampering, you would need to first explain how you've studied many millions of mutations caused by said tampering, and how you counteract the negative affects that would come about by this.

Suddenly remembering a bulletin I once read about Chickens having teeth, from what I can remember our genetic structure is just a massive library of mutations that have certain elements switched on and others all set to dormant. If you knew which genetic markers to "switch on" you would be able to give humans any number of mutations, but it would be more like pinching designs off other creatures on our planet. So if you wanted wings say, you'd probably end up looking more and more like a vulture/bat human mutant.

Anyway, this is the chicken thing I mentioned, for those curious.

At the same time, this is three hundred years from now. Genetic research will have changed significantly, and will probably have reached the point where it can safely change small things. You could write a predisposition for certain diseases, and since the future will most likely involve entirely socialized versions of current medical systems, it's not unlikely that major terminal or lifetime diseases will be written out. This doesn't mean you can't have cancer, it just means that it would happen less.

On the flip side, genetic changes that are mostly aesthetic would most likely not take off. Research would involve risks (early genetic design will involve plenty of 'Oops, we gave you a cancer.'), and it would be morally questionable. People won't exactly like it when the rich can turn their children into ubermensch, and the opposition would be pretty strong. You might see, say, the Chinese get into some limited amount of genetic testing, but as the world grows more and more globalized it seems like it would be a destabilizing factor that doesn't get you much bang for your buck.

Never mind, village already stated.

While it could be argued the social norms of the world in 300 years are unlikely to be siniliar to now, I think it would better if that can of worms isn't opened since it would be like expecting People from the 1700's to not have people wearing fancy wigs in brass spacecraft shot at the moon's eye from a big cannon.

Even though it's pretty obvious people nowadays aren't as optimistic as they were in the golden age.

Tweaking social norms is the hardest part. On one hand, we have to change some norms or it will be too obviously modern. On the other, if we change them too much than it will be too foreign for us to empathize with.

On that note, i've finished the intro post Hugs asked me to write. So now imma take a shower, come back to reread and edit it a few times, then i'll send it to the braintrust for further judgement. It might not be as nice as other intros since I only had 24 hours or so to write it instead of a week, but it should do.

social adjustments will always happen, though usually rather violently at times. I may even use genetic engineering for a story twist in the Coalition.

@Evan: I did. I linked to here in two of the interest-checks, and in our group PM.

@oZode: Nah. Plenty of room left.

For those wondering: Mostly, I'm waiting for those who are still making their apps/sheets to finish. If it takes too long, we'll start. But I'd prefer everyone started at once.

Vilage posted an intro post. Nothing crazy, but something to start us off. Not really an intro post either, but something to get everyone in the mood I guess. I don't expect everyone to make posts that long by the way. That's just how Vilage and the crew like to write.

I'm wondering how long we should wait before we open up posting to everyone. I don't want to wait too long, so no one loses interest, but I don't want to rush in and leave people behind either.

I couldn't care less when you start to let people post, if we are following a plot, then I'll have to catch up. (And am I the only one who hasn't completed a NS?).

@Rare: You're not the only one. Off the top of my head: oZode, Queen Raidne, you, and at least two other people who's names I can't remember. Oh, and Googer.

And myself, I guess. But I'm waiting until everyone else is set before I make my sheet.
