@NuttsnBolts Yes! Exactly that! (One of the reasons I work for myself now) Sorry you have to deal with it, it sucks no matter where it is happening; whether it be in school with a group project, in Rp, work, family events - it drives me nuts!

Hmm, making roleplays seems like a big waste of time.

I don't want to be that dudem but...

My God, I hate 'xd random' type characters. You know, the ones where people just randomly write weird and stupid shit just to be unpredictanle.

It might just me being nitpicky, but..

That feel when you read through a thousand interest checks until you find someone who seems to be a good match and you spend an hour typing out a PM with tons of ideas of your own and then they deliberately ignore you. Shit, if you're not interested just say so!

Sometimes you wonder if certain people even roleplay on this roleplay site, or even try to...and not just act like shit awful human beings for no reason. <.<

People that drop their own RP's so quickly without being honest why. Why did you bother? I've dealt with someone who couldn't even spell and didn't want to even try fixing it. And I have people that do nothing but act like superior snide little bellends and expect me to ignore them. I ask because I don't care. Why the hell are you even here? Clearly not to make friends or improve writing or even to actually roleplay...So what is it? <.<

And the version for public threads: when you read through a thousand interest checks until you finally find one which strikes a good balance between player freedom and a tight, focused plot, with an eloquent, engaging OOC thread, a passionate GM ...

but then you check out the Characters tab and realize you'd be roleplaying with a bunch of teenaged supermodels spending all their IC time shooting off "snarky" one-liners and generally being generic boring cunts with no personality, creativity, or vision.

The number of well-written, well-GMed threads ruined through the incompetence of the general public defies reality.

Then the majority of films and series must be painful for you to watch. It's truly annoying, indeed.

Think about this, though. Would the same group of characters appear more legitimate or interesting if they were ugly? If people are attracted to and obsess about beauty in real life, why wouldn't they in a fantasy? And the people behind the computer screes, who play these characters, are they not teenagers or young themselves? How much depth should you be able to expect from them? I'm not trying to be snarky here, genuinely interested in these questions.

Well, yeah...being ridiculously good-looking is one of the major elements of Mary Suedom.

Let's delve into some criticism, shall we?

It must've occurred to you, at some point, that the idea of people roleplaying fantasy stories on an online forum is closely connected to self-insertion. It's quite a significant step from Fan Fiction to Escapism. Knowing that, doesn't it seem counter productive to be frustrated with the concept of 'Mary Sue'? What you are saying is that any character that is attractive is partially a Mary Sue, and therefore illegitimate regardless of its other aspects. There are quite a few other factors that must be met before you can call a character a Mary Sue: lack of flaws, wide range of expertise, dramatic or tragic backstory that hasn't affected the character, natural magnetism that makes the most anti-social characters open up as books. Not to mention that the idea of 'Mary Sue' plays into the current, left-wing political craze whereby a character isn't legitimate unless it's a deformed, LGTBQ+, African-Chinese, Demi-Pansexual unicorn attack helicopter.

You didn't ask me, but I feel inclined to respond.

I think that attractive characters aren't a problem in themselves, but can be a symptom of another problem. If a character is really super totally hot, but their attractiveness doesn't have any interesting implications on their personality, it could be an indication that someone is playing for wish-fulfilment more so than to create a good story. Chances are, they're just playing an idealised version of themselves, whether they realise it or not. And that's usually detrimental to good story-telling.

For the second point, there's a notable difference between someone playing a character who is snarky teenager, and an actual snarky teenager playing themselves. The former person knows he's playing an annoying character, assumably with the intention of making them less annoying through character development. The latter person probably thinks the way they're acting is actually cool. Their perspective is limited due to their inexperience, and if they don't see the flaws in their own character, they're unlikely to create any interesting development.

These are generalisations, of course. Point is, the problem isn't about snarky teenage supermodels specifically, but about the fact that they are statistically likely to overlap with a miasma of bad roleplaying practices.

Rejecting a roleplay on a political basis because you believe something is fake, but the rest of the roleplay is either total fantasy or out in the future or already an alternate universe scenario.

What the fuck.
