That was a great post, Lillian. Poor Penny I hated putting her on the spot too & Justric I'm sure that Jack's crew wouldn't appreciate being thought of as a place for punishment. In fact, that might be something we need is what to do with people that break ship rules.

Well I am so very glad you did put her on the spot. Such a fun post to reply too. As for punishment, wouldn't that fall under the quasi-military governing the ship is under? I have no idea how such things are run though.

I think Lillian is correct. The ship is essentially under martial law, though it doesn't appear to be an oppressive or strict one. From Wikipedia, I pulled this on military non-judicial punishment:

Punishment can range from reprimand to reduction in rank, correctional custody, confinement on bread and water/diminished rations (aboard ships only), loss of pay, extra duty, and/or restrictions. The receipt of non-judicial punishment does not constitute a criminal conviction (it is equivalent to a civil action), but is often placed in the service record of the individual.

More severe crimes (such as murder and rape) would probably tried through a military tribunal.

Makes sense, Justric. In Josey's mind he's thinking of the worst job someone could have on the ship. I mean, he's a great guy but he's also a chef...chefs can be snooty and temperamental sometimes.

And for what it's worth, the legal system aboard the Copernicus has, by necessity, become a quasi-hybrid of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (as applied to the US Armed Forces) and the American judicial system. "By necessity," I mean that the Copernicus was never designed to hold a crew that contained so many civilians with so little knowledge or preparation for interstellar travel. Its original purpose was a colonizing ship, not an ark for whoever the hell just happened to be in the immediate area when the whole world suddenly went to shit.

I'll try to put up a post a little later today, that might outline things a bit better.
