Multiple Avatars?

This request seems to be a stretch, but I recalled a feature speculated on an old forum about giving people access to multiple avatars to use when making posts. Like, when you're making an IC post in an RPG as a certain character, you can use the avatar of that certain character for specifically those posts... I'm not sure if I'm making sense or not...

I would actually prefer this to be multiple custom signatures, one of which can be set as default, and others that can be toggled per-post as needed to replace the default signature.

Personally what I do if I want my character to be seen with my post so the other rpers in your rp can be reminded of your character's appearance, I make a little mini siggy and put it at the top of each post, it also helps for rps that have more the one character in a post.

Yeah I do this in my rp too. ^ It's very handy at the start of an rp when you have loads of players getting to grip with characters (some with multiple chars) and its helps break the text up a bit too.

Wouldn't say no to the option of multiple avatars or sig options though. That could be pretty neat.

There isn't one at this point. It is in the works but until then simply relax and let the unicorn happen.

Yeah, there is definitely something to this idea. There's some way to make the forum "character aware" in a way that doesn't just add another layer of rigidity to roleplays.

A common request I get is to add a "Characters" tab next to the "IC" and "OOC" tabs so that you don't have to trawl through pages of OOC to find everyone's sheet.

That's the simplest approach, but it doesn't link IC to a character without the user manually doing it. (Perhaps BBCode like [char=...] can be introduced)

One step further would be: when you make an IC post, you can select one of those characters from a dropdown list.

Another step further might involve a "Characters" tab in your profile -- a central place for your characters. And when you join a roleplay, you can link 1+ of your characters to the roleplay. In each IC post, you choose which character is posting it from a dropdown list.

Eventually I think there will be some form of this sort of thing, but the hard part is actually planning it out in detail.

I use avatars to identify the players, since those are far more recognizable in a glimpse than the combinations of letters that usernames are... To be honest I'd prefer people swapped them around less, not more often.

I continually do not support character sheets as a separate thing. Extra tabs yes, making it CS-tab specifically no. Just *link* them in the OP or ask the GM to do it - there you go, no searching needed!

Some people don't reuse characters though and it may just clutter your profile if they're somehow stored there. I'd rather players be responsible for their own storage of characters. I mean we have a subform for that already and it's not broke so why shove it someplace it doesn't belong? Just my thought. And I'd rather be able make a custom tab for say an OOC or CS rather than them be there by default.

So delete them when you're done. If you're someone who lives in Free, that kind of system may not be of use. But if you're involved in a long-running Casual or Advanced RP, it may be beneficial for visiting players to see the characters you play from your profile.

I know I would find it quite useful.

I know people who would find it useful just like some wouldn't. Some people only construct characters after knowing a plot and setting while some just like to make characters and have them stored for future use (if any). I get that. I was just giving my two cents. I just figured with the threads for people to use that we already have for storage and viewing, I see no point in appointing a tab when most CS are collected in the GM's post upon approval but everyone is different. *nods*

A CS tab would be helpful (everything in one thread, no differences in how character sheets are handled between threads), but thinking about how it would be linked is just... messy. @_@

Don't forget that some also use multiple characters in one post. Particularly advanced-level GMs. We'd think having a [char=#] [/char] Mcode would work. That way, you can have multiple characters in use in a single post. This Mcode could have the paramater # so that you can have 2-3 x hexadecimal characters of characters defined.

Having a character tab in each RP, you would not have to look far to find that RP's characters. One way to make that extra advanced would be for any post you make in that, to be linked to a tab in your own profile, where you can browse any and all character sheet posts you've made. (i.e. posts made in Character sheet tabs). Edit one, and the other listing of it is also changed.

Interchangeable avatars/sigs could also be interesting. It might be confusing, but it could bear investigation. Most would still probably stick to just one or two, though.
Profiles should have something visible that doesn't change for such, to make it easier for people to "recognize" others. Be it avatar, sig or something else. (not just name, as not all are good at remembering such.)

I am in an advanced RP which has lasted for years, and during that time over quarter hundred (!) players have come and gone over time - therefore, a character sheets tab would soon be a mess of mostly inactive characters. Scratch it, every successful RP I have been in has had minimum thrice as many entries as there have ended up being current players. On one hand, those temporal CS can be useful for reference when you speak of dead/astray characters ICly ... but at other times they are clutter. I imagine it would be even worse for successful Casual roleplays...

And linking has worked perfectly for RPs I am in. You've nice little list in one post, and if you want to see info about a character, you just click a name in said list...

That relies on the GM keeping the list up to date/accurate.

Also, consistency. Consistency is nice. And Ctrl+f is perfectly workable if you know what you're looking for and don't have much to search.

What do you mean under consistency? List is consistent all right. And if the GM can't even keep track of who is in the RP, then the RP is doomed anyway (or needs a new GM, at least).

I don't think you got me here: I am speaking of literally having *multiple pages* of inactive CSs, some of them too long to fit within the current lettermark-limit for a post. If a slow-paced advanced RP pulls off half a dozen pages of characters, active and inactive mixed, I don't want to see the mess a successful Casual makes. At least make the character sheets tab something more ambiguous, like "info". CS is too specific to be predetermined.
