What's the split in how many people are NATO and PACT? I'm thinking about making a squad of 40th Fallschirmjägerbataillon Willi Sänger.

Memo to self: Using ARRSE as a research source is not a good start since it's far better as a distraction.

I would post, I'm just not entirely sure what to post or who (if anyone) is in the city my character is in.

Hagenow, Kho. I sent you a PM with more details. Ask away!
You want to know what an MRR looked like in 1983?
Or how an MRR moved? Has anyone discussed the elaborate Soviet Battle Drills?

Jannah, I'm getting my kids ready for school now and will help you with your starting locations later today.
Kho, I'll go into detail about the organization of a Soviet MRR, which is the same for other WARSAW pact nations as well.
The Battle drills are based on the communication style the Soviets used. Information and commands flow down the chain of command only. Division Commanders send orders to Regimental Commanders; Regimental Commanders send orders to Battalion Commanders; Battalion commanders send orders to Company commanders and Company Commanders send orders to Platoon Leaders. The lower command level cannot even talk up the chain of command. The lower echelon either does it or dies. There is no talking back. The higher commander does not want to hear it.

The Drills are simple. The battalion commander says, "Battalion, Action Left!" Then every vehicle in the battalion executives a left face (turn) and the entire battalion attacks in that direction. Soviets Base their tactics on Beating the crap out of entire 1Km x 1Km grid squares with intensive Artillery fire and then attacking with Battalions and Regiments. I can discuss Movement formations at a later time.

This is a Soviet Mechanized Infantry Battalion Organization set in 1988. The only real difference between then and 1983 is the existence of the Automatic Grenade Launcher Section. It wasn't there in 1983. This is a very large pic, but I embedded a link so you can look at it in its own page and zoom in and out on it. This particular Mech Battalion has MT-LB, but a BMP Battalion has the same organization. A Motorized Battalion uses Wheeled vehicles instead of tracked vehicles. The primary Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier of the time is the BTR-70 or BTR-80.

Here is the organization of the Regiment:

As you can see there are three MRBs and a Tank Battalion in the MRR. During most operations, the Tank Battalion, which has three companies will be broken down and each company is task organized into the three battalions.

Right, I'll have to keep coming to this page whenever I need a reminder of how things are structured. I think I'll be able to do a post now - mind you, it'll probably be full of blatant errors :P but it'll be a post ;D
