So on the old guild, I was trying to run something similar to this before everything blew up. It had literally just started when Thanksgiving came around - I said I'd be taking a break for it because I'd be with family and I'd try to get something up (couldn't) then the site blew up a couple weeks later so literally the RP never got off its feet despite just getting the setting set up @_@!

I haven't seen anyone who was in the RP around, so I figure I'll start a new interest thread for it and see if we want to do it with a new group. I didn't have much of the OOC post saved, so I'm gonna be retyping the whole thing - but I DID save the whole first and second scenarios for the investigators pretty much, and we'd just gotten started with the first.

All that said, here's what I have of the old premise:

In modern times, the supernatural has become heavily debated - no video or photo evidence brought forth has had a for sure conclusion. But there are some men and women who know better. Those who have come in contact and dealt with such phenomena before. You are one of these people. Your encounter with the supernatural has lead you to become somewhat well known in the research world, and you now lead your life attempting to encounter them again. Perhaps you're an exorcist who wants to help those suffering from possession. Perhaps you're a priestess who wants to lead souls back to the afterlife. Maybe the supernatural world simply intrigues you and you're chasing after it to learn more. Whatever the case, you've been called to join a group of specialists in the field on a very peculiar case.
The Rules + The General Flow of the Roleplay

General way this roleplay will play out will be:

Each character brings their own expertise to the team. The tech guy might have cameras - emf readers - recorders - etc. The spiritualist might be able to sense spirits that aren't making themselves known yet. The researcher can gain far more knowledge on the history of the area/place/owner. The occultist knows about all kinds of rituals and curses that might be around, etc. Basically we're looking for a group of 6-8 people to play the main characters and to bring something unique. I myself will not be playing one of the team. Instead, I will be the clients and the spirits/whatever kind of haunt it is.

The flow will go something like:
-Characters meet each other + the client
-Client gives an overview of what's happening and a brief history
-Characters are given free reign of the area - I'm not going to force a linear path anywhere. You can talk to whoever whenever (so long as nobody else occupies the person/thing). I'll be making and putting maps in the OOC so you know the layout of the area - and you can choose to go wherever you want
-Characters (together or solo) work to solve the mystery of the area and get rid of whatever is there in one way or another
-Rinse/repeat for however long we want to go.

The rules:

  • Some of the knowledge of each haunt will be delivered by PM. It is up to the player who recieves the PM what they divulge, whether it be everything or only parts. However, if the knowledge they withold is keeping up the RP, I will have it come out another way.

  • If you can't keep up with PMs very easily, you might want to make a character that won't get them often (example: if you're strictly an exorcist, most information would have to be gained on your own, asking those who would have done the research)

  • You CAN die in more violent haunts. I likely won't kill you on the spot super easily, but if your character does something incredibly risky without any form of attempting to protect themselves, I won't hesitate here. =P You can always alleviate risks by doing things like getting a charm made, or learning some spiritual stuff (albeit not as strong as someone who's been doing it their whole life) etc.

  • Don't get sexual here. Feel free to have a romance on the side or even make love triangles if you wish; but if you want to go any further than kissing/embracing just do it in pms on your own time.

  • Don't take control of another person's character, but feel free to if you've previously PM'd them and asked permission.

  • Don't double post. I may PM you new information though, and if I give you permission in that PM to double post, go ahead. Collabs are encouraged!

  • f you need to leave the RP for any reason, that's fine, just let me know so I can get someone else in! I'm totally fine with people dropping out, just don't disappear (however appropriate for the roleplay that would be).

Some notes about gameplay/roles before

Roles:

Researcher

Those who've based their character about researching the haunt and the people/places involved:

Step 1 - Decide what you want to actually research. Maybe you're looking for something about the location's history (preliminary research on the case will always give some background, but never all of it, so you can choose to dig deeper). Maybe you're looking into past reports of hauntings. Maybe you want to know about a specific person who lived/frequented the location, etc. You can choose to do any of these. Note, the more specific you get, obviously the more focused your research will be so you're likely to find more on the topic (Ex: researching paranormal events in the area might get you a decent list of paranormal incidents, but researching a specific incident will get you juicier details.

Step 2 - Get your character in a position that they can research this. A laptop is fine, even, to see what you can pull up on certain things (and this is probably your best bet). But you might choose to sit part of the day out researching the location at the city records. If you do this - I'll try my best not to bore you there.

Step 3 - PM me what you're looking for as far as research goes.

Obviously, if two people look for the same thing, you'll get very similar answers, but at least we'll break up monotony this way.

Note: Anyone can research, realistically, so I'm allowing all characters to. But people who make a character based mostly on research know better channels to get information. Whether that be good contacts, seedier bars, etc. They'll get far more mileage from what they research.

Psychics/Spiritualists

Your job is easy. You're going to just be posting, wandering around the location, interacting, etc. I'll be PMing you periodically letting you know what you might feel/see. It's your choice how you reveal this information in your posts, or if you even tell the rest of the characters. You also might know warding magics, ways to exorcise/etc. List these in your character sheet and know you're the only ones who can combat violent spirits outside the occultists or hunters.

Occultists/Hunters

You guys are basically experts on the occult. You combat spirits, you know how to break curses, etc. You generally use more conventional means (rock salt, etc). You might have some latent psychic powers, too, in which case you have the same role as the psychics up there when it comes to seeing things.

Tech Guys/Gals

At the start of each investigation I'll be giving everyone a floor plan. You guys will be the ones deciding what equipment you're leaving and where. If you just say a certain room, I'll assume you get a good vantage point to see the entire room. However, if one of the researchers says something like "this mirror has had a ton of activity in the past" and you want to focus a camera or something on it - go for it, just let me know you're doing it in character. You guys also will decide distribution of equipment. So, you decide if someone is going to walk off with a recorder for EVPs/etc. Finally, you decide where base camp is - and you decide if you want to man it/not, or if you want to go out with some other character and do some recording or something.

Base Camp

Anyone can take this role, and you'll likely be switching off here a bit. You guys will be watching the monitors (likely 2+ people here) and it'll be somewhat like the spiritualist's job. When you see something on the monitors or any equipment you've left, I'll let you know. We're going to automatically assume you have temperature levels of each room as well, and that these cameras have sound pickup (which you can swap to with a headset to hear what's going on in a room if you wish). When a night ends - We'll just assume you go over the recordings/etc during the day and you can do it super fast (as to make sure you aren't occupied all day listening to recordings from the night before and thus bored in the RP). I'll let you know what you find on recordings around midday.

Any other kind of character

This roleplay's about freedom so if you have another kind of character you want to bring in, go ahead! We'll make up some rules that allow you to do things.
As far as what kind of characters I want, you can really go with anything. You want to be a 13 year old psychic? Go for it. Just know you'll probably not have a normal life, and have a guardian with you as a secondary character. Want to be a skeptic who's trying to disprove stuff even with proof thrown in their face? Go for it. Want to be a total fraud of a psychic who ends up meeting some real psychics? Go for it!

Any interest?

Mm. Yes, I'd be very interested in this~

I've had a character idea that I've been wanting to use for a while, and haven't gotten a chance to yet.

Nope, but now I'm super interested in running a campaign. o_o

As far as interest, sounds good, guys! A couple more and I'll probably get to work re-fleshing out the OOC.

Very interested. I'd love to play a Researcher character since I have someone who might work with that role best.

Quick question..From what I understand in the premise our characters are freelancers who were hired together as a group for their individual prowess. That being said someone who is fulfilling the researcher's, tech's and base camp roles can't be individual freelancers seeing as those types of jobs act as a support to those who do the supernatural exorcism. While it's not impossible for them to be individual free seeing as they can just be interested in the field and are doing it by themselves I'd rather find out if our characters can be a team prior to the current case.

Actually, I'd be all on board with the characters already being a part of a team - like the BPRD, or (as much as I hate to use it as an example) Monster Hunter International. It could streamline things rather a lot~

This seems quite interesting.

I do have a few questions. In your setting, what is the nature of these supernatural beings? Are they scientifically explainable phenomena, or are they completely mystical in nature? Are they only "ghosts" or are can they take the shapes of supernatural beings of folklore (fairies, youkai, etc)? Do they manifest on their own, or are they shaped by human belief?

The last question is particularly important to the character concept I have in mind. A self-described con man that specializes in "impostors," and can deceive creatures into defeating themselves.

Whoo - a lot of replies to respond to:

@FirolV - A tech specialist doesn't necessarily need to be connected. Whether you guys know each other from beforehand is up to what you guys want to play. I based it so that you guys **could** go into this not knowing one another. That said, if you wanted to - you're welcome to, and we can just rewrite that you're already a team. Generally, though, if someone wants to play a skeptic - well why would they already be on a team with a spiritualist?

As far as being alone, the tech guy can give out equipment - or totally choose to do it on his own. Base camp doesn't necessarily need to be in communication with other investigators - but they can be if they wish. It's really to get a sense of freedom in the RP. And as the person running it - I'd make sure nobody got bored - so if nobody took your walkie talkies or your cameras when you tried handing them out - I'd probably still give you quite a bit to do.

@Naril - As said above - if you guys want to know each other beforehand, let me know. We can totally do that. But I'm not going to keep someone who wants to not be a part of the team from their freedom either. If they want to not know you guys, they can - and you'd meet them in the first case.

@Dead Cruiser - All kinds! That's kind of the point of it. If there's something you can find by googling supernatural or stories of the supernatural, I'm not beyond using it. I'll give you sufficient clues to figure it out, and make it more and more obvious if time keeps going on. You guys might even do some out-of-character research to figure out some of this stuff, if you need to. But it's likely I'll be revealing quite a bit to the researcher if they start looking up specific stuff like this. IE: You guys find a bunch of tablets with symbols on them - the researcher might research this and turn back some specific kind of curse. Once they reveal this - the occultist is totally able to throw out any kind of information the player themselves can find on google about that curse and consider it part of their characters knowledge (or they can just ask me what they know). Similarly, if you're playing a shinto priestess, and some kind of japanese curse comes up - you may be within realm to know about it. The idea of the campaign is: Ghosts are real, Curses are real, basically everything in the paranormal field is real, and it's kept out of the public eye. But there's just as much out there that's totally explainable - and though it might seem paranormal - isn't.

On the same note - one spirit might be sparked by the local's intense belief in it, while the other might just be an independent force. I'm also not beyond the idea that mythical creatures might exist too - but It'd be fairly obvious early on if it was one of these and not a spirit - or a spirit emulating one.

As far as your character concept - I'd like to know a bit more. How does he go about doing this? Let's say it's a spirit - how does he trick it? Or, if it's a curse set in motion, I'm not entirely sure how he would stop it in this manner - as much as he'd be capable in aiding in breaking a curse, I don't think he could turn it against itself. If it's a demon, I kind of get what you mean though.
That said, this looks like enough interest guys, so I'll totally get to work on an OOC. It might not be up today - but probably by wed night!

I was part of the old one, and would possibly be up for going for this again.

Need to see if I can fetch my old CS, somehow... You don't happen to remember the exact name of the old rp, would you? Would help me out a ton when browsing archives.

Edit: Okay, seems like the old thread is completely gone. Hm. Don't think I saved my CS anywhere, either, damn. Not entirely sure if I want to start writing one again from scratch.

That's why I asked about supernatural entities being shaped by belief. If he can alter the perceptions and beliefs of the people from which the being draws its power, he can alter the nature of the being. Though mindless entities and phenomena, such as curses, are simply not his strong suit. As I said, he specializes in fakes, frauds, phonies and impostors, and is skilled in the art of deception. That about covers his entire skillset. Really, he's more adept at inflicting curses than resolving them.

@jester - Hey!

By any chance was your character Trini? I still have all the character sheets archived. If so, here:

@Dead Cruiser - Well, some might be shaped this way - but certainly not all - so you'd be far less of a combatant in the latter case.

I had a thought since then. What if trying entities to beliefs was his particular talent? It wouldn't be overwhelming or obvious, but he could disbelieve curses and ghosts and such into banality. Deceiving them into not believing in themselves and zero-summing, in the event of a critical success. Skepticism as a means of attack and defense.
