3rd MEU looks good.

Quick rundown on Spartan production vs ODST ranks:
1 - 300
1.1 - ~7
2 - Less than 75, Less than 16 survived the Fall of Reach
3 - 1200+
4 - ~500

ODST - 'several divisions' (at least 3 are named), 20,000 members each

Since Halo loves Spartans, and treats everything else as mook-redshirts unless scripted otherwise... records of entire military strength is hard if not impossible to determine.
-Usually as big as the difficulty level demands.

On top of that, the organization is... messy.

I do it by causing amnesia. Quickest way to do that is to work on imprinting your face on the nearest wall

@Foster: Ah, I was looking for a list like that but didn't find one.

A heads up: I plan for my character's unit to be scattered and partially destroyed. So the 3rd should be considered one of those units that was nearly annihilated during the initial assault.

1.1 - Was actually 16
Janissary James, Kevin Morales, Benji Wong, Guy, Frannie, Darin, 10 other unnamed
2 - 75 went into augmentation, 33 went on from there, 16 are still alive today
3 - 340 are still alive today
4 - 300-500 (Just on the Infinity), total number is unknown (Which includes all previous Spartan-IIs if they chose to join the Spartan Branch, all surviving members Spartan-III was folded into the Spartan Branch on Admiral Parangosky's orders.)

BTW, since it is feck'n MARS, I'd say there's a pretty high Army presence, similar to that of Reach/ODST, as such, expect a fairly high number of cheaper and quite capable UH-144s and a smattering of the lighter Hornets to be attached to assist the ODSTs.

In Halo nomenclature, VMX = Marine, so AMX = Army... seems logical.

Also, unlike the other Spartans, S-III was an Army program.

Yes but as stated three super carries are over this area, the entire mission is a hit and run as the covenant are trying to dig up intel, almost all forces have been decimated. Remaining forces are have fallen back to defend the MAC guns planet-side encase the Covenant start glassing so very little marine presence as I have stated before this is weapons manufacturing area and as such many vehicles are in the area that went unused or were not pulled out. We will have no air support. As a great Colonel once said "Son, you are the support."

And trying to evac vehicles which themselves aren't rated for space-combat in unarmed transports, in front of said 3 supercarriers...
-Heck, even after the factories were gutted, tanks still rolled out of Stalingrad and Lenningrad still upgraded and repaired tanks.

The Covvies also had this bad habit of mistakening Human tech for forunner artifacts.
-Which is entirely why Cleveland, Ohio was never glassed. As the Colenel would say, "You're welcome."

Air support could be limited. If the Covenant control the skies, it's understandable to not have much air support, but it is not unheard of to make exceptions and prioritization for units based on the importance of their mission. If there is any degree of air power available, - and I assume there is considering you are being dropped in pods - it'd be special units like yours who would be getting air support.

Mars is very important to the war effort. There has to be some kind of support available.

I was actually suggesting to augment ODST's assets with atmospheric-assets from the factories due to the fact that the Covvie fleet had stripped the planet of orbital assets.
-That, and Covvie-ships kinda suck in atmosphere.

And a Falcon is a ton faster than a mongoose.

I am pretty sure birds still flew over New Alexandria on Reach, even after the bulk of the Covenant fleet had arrived. Why would Mars be any different? Mars is probably the second-most important planet at this point, since it's one of the last remaining powerhouses available.

True there was still fighters in the air at the beginning of Reach, but ground airfields were the first things hit. Restricting all air support to those provided by the fleet, which is generally limited. We have to remember that the UNSC had contingency plans to move all industry facilities on Earth and Mars to other locations if the planets were ever discovered. After Reach they began the evacuation of Mars as per that plan, and the fleet contingent that was protecting Mars, which is in fact the Home fleet and not a separate fleet, was pulled back to Earth. At the same time of the assault on Earth that covenant also hit Mars in what became the Battle of Mare Erythraeum, which resulted in a massive UNSC defeat. So logically by the time we arrive Mars should be under Covenant control. We could expect up to 90% casualties on just the orbital drop, with our team being the few survivors.

Now that I got that out of the way my suggestion is don't worry. I repeat the mantra of my last RP community, leave the details in the background. This should be a character driven RP. Who cares what air support there is, or even the name of our unit and the specs of the ship. Its just background noise and we as the characters are the focus, not the junk details.

*insert random thought*

So I have 2 chinchillas, and I've been cleaning their cage for the last hour. I have both of them sitting in their playpen in front of the TV, which is on the Animal Planet channel thats playing several of those vet shows. I just had the sudden thought that these shows much be like horror movies to my chinchillas. XD

Just gonna toss this out there, but its In-canon that Misrah armory continued functioning right on through this battle, and into the end of the war.

Where else did you think the BR-85s came from?

I imagine it's fortified like a bunker. It'd be cool if the team passed through there. Everything surrounding it on the outside is destroyed, but the armory still stands. Whatever forces are remaining in the area could even be using it as a headquarters of sorts.

It could be Mars' Crow's Nest.

Yeah there plenty of working vehicles in the factories, but the surviving forces are unable to reach them. As for air support all of it has been ordered not to launch until you confirm you have the package, as they don't want to fly into hell if there's nothing worth grabbing. Main force of troopers in this area are located at the an armory near the space elevator which was filled with warthogs and scorpion class tank along with enough ammo for a month. These are being used to stop the Covenant assault is the only reason why they have not seized the orbital lift. However most of the city is intact, just the fact that covenant have over run almost all positions in it and have pressed to take the elevator. As such the squad is dropping in on the far side while on cruiser distracts the super carriers and then jumps away before it can be destroyed.
