@Lugubrious@Prince of SeraphsAye, like many things that I create, 'tis a joke. A subjectively bad one perhaps, but like the Chinese I really don't care too much about it. You asked for ideas and I gave you one off the top of my head, so like my haircut, it is choppy, full of bad decisions, and hand made. Does it offend? Sure it does and it enevitably shall. I wouldn't bother writing anything if I was worried it'd offend someone's sensibilities, because it will.
If you do want a more serious suggestion, a steam punk Cold War would be more up my alley. Though I myself care very little about politics, I can say I've had quite an eye opening relevation learning that the only reason I do what I do now is because of a larger political scheme that I have no obvious involvement in.
That is to say, use the Vietnam war as the basis of a background. But this isn't just going to be an obvious thing about commies versus capitalists; this is a war of independence and desperation, where a promising nation has to make some hard, even brutal decisions for their future. Introduce much more stable and affluent superpowers who try to influence places like your quasi-Vietnam, supporting the various factions looking to lead the country based off ideologies not too dissimilar to their own.
Of course there is also just people trying to get along with their lives. Trying to make ends meet in the wake of this national economical disaster and what not. Tensions are high but so far there isn't any violence. Until finally, the diplomats come. Thousands of armed diplomats here to help protect the interest of whoever or whatever reason. Their opponents are people who have a different idea of how their country should be ran, using whatever ideals you feel is not inherently bad, but incompatible with each other.
Of course perspective is key here. While I made initial parallels to the Vietnam war, the motives or causes could easily be changed. What you might see as a war between the communists and democrats could be more like a war of independence for those fighting for their home country, rather than foreign diplomats (i.e. Soldiers) looking to extend their country's interests. One thing that particularly tickles my fancy is constrating the advance equipment being used and the educational intelligence of those using it; in this instance, an airship gunner could be the best gunner in his unit with an intricate understanding of bullet projectories and weather conditions as it relates to warfare, but they think they're fighting against the quasi-French instead of quasi-Americans, as the Quasi-French were the quasi-Vietnam imperial rulers up until their recent independence.
If it sounds like a mess it's because it is. Things are rarely so simple as "these guys are our enemies and thus evil" or "these guys eat puppies". Because puppies are delicious and a cultural delicacy, you racists kraught.
