There are few corners of this land which are unclaimed by the Kingdoms that inhabit the land. The Bloodied Valley was one of these places. There had been many clashes in this neutral land, with various Kingdoms locking horns, and confrontations of other more fantastical kinds. Not far beneath the dew covered grass are thousands of artefacts, most of which have been preserved much better than the ancient kingdoms of dust.
Much to archaeologists dismay, all excavation is forbidden. This land is a sacred reminder, and a terrible reminder of previous wars, and how that past is buried. Now is an era of peace, made real by free trade of goods and services, and general goodwill. The world discovered that the best way to deal with problems is to sit and talk.
So every year, an annual meeting is held in an old hall built on this land. Every kingdom tries to attend, and ask for help in their problems. Hunger and plague no longer ravage the lands, as food and healers are promptly dispatched to deal with these problems
It is closing in on midday, and though the sun is high in the sky a chill still weighs heavy in the air, a foreboding sign of winter coming in. The meetings are held in late autumn, after the harvest, so Kingdoms can supplement their supplies before trade freezes up for the winter. Upon quick inspection you can tell 30 or so tents are speckled around the hall in the middle, small smoke stacks floating up from the gaps between. A thick flow of travellers is just arriving, hoping to set up before lunch. Since the annual meeting is tomorrow, you can expect most people to arrive today, and staying for the feast held in the hall over the next week.
Because Kingdoms are only allowed to bring 35 of their number along with them, most retinue’s travel together just in case. It often makes a humorous sight to watch a lavish diplomat of Ashalumnia speaking politely to a shambled spokesmen of Zegol, or a poorer kingdom. You all have a general idea of the problems every kingdom is facing. Low fishing yield across the far west. A copper shortage in the north. Nothing too serious.
But there is something no-one knows. Or more specifically, everyone ‘knows’. Most people will wax lyrical about legends and rumours, although most of it is superstitious rubbish. Anyone’s guess could be taken as truth. The rumours are that The Forbidden Kingdom will attend this meeting.
From the ancient libraries in Bothiel to the religious tomes of Anah, there is no mention of The Forbidden Kingdom. The only place you would hear of such a province is scary bedtime stories and the occasional inspired curse. Who is The Forbidden Kingdom? How do we know they will attend? Where is this kingdom based?
Many officials wave The Forbidden Kingdom off as a joke, but the camp’s atmosphere, although friendly, is cloaked in speculation. And not the good kind.
Many people are watching the road for unexpected visitors. They see banners for a couple of kingdoms and shout as they spot one of the more famous ones…
