You forgot to divide that one. They're partially resistant to fire, in that they 'take' half damage from it. So, you dealt 8 damage, leaving the mage with -12.
You got a little hint from Robert when he said "I don't think normal attacks will work." but ya I concur with your thoughts. Dorisma going straight for the torch might have been a bit of a stretch as well but meh.
Can I attempt to discern the underlying effects of the magic keeping the zombies together?
If would be rather metagame if Ry'leh started to heal the zombies suddenly.
If you try to use poison, you'll actually "heal" them a bit per round, however, if you use Cure, you'll "damage" them, and quite a bit, too. Do whichever you think R'lyeh would do in that situation. I mean, Poison is HARDLY a normal attack.
Whichever you think is best. Honestly, for this being the first set of enemies with this condition, I'd kind of expect R'lyeh to use poison against them.
Well, he already noted his magic would have been useless as they are non-elemental magics, plus poison would do little to life forms which do not have metabolisms.
I'll use THIS:
Ability 1 : Study - Studies' enemy current state and weak points.
Hey, Grey, while you're here, would you mind rolling for a dodge? I'm going to have the zombie paladin attack your character in my post. He will be doing so with a 'hurt' spell, which heals these zombies, but actually hurts us. I rolled an 11 on his hit
11 + 1 (AGImod)
If it hits, it will hit you for... 1 + 5 (INTmod) = 6 damage... if you roll lower than a 12, that is.
You get half of your agility as a bonus, which brings you up to 10... now, so I'm not powergaming, mind coming up with a reaction to him getting hurt... I was planning on making him 'seem to flinch', but, you know, seems kinda weird having him actually do anything without the creator's approval.
Okay, this is funny... @The Grey Dust, your character has enough magic defense for that attack to deal... 1 damage. I'm not even joking here, lol.
