I like this art enough that I was like, "That's gotta be Nemsemet."

TL;DR Summary
  • Modern Fantasy; the supernatural exists, but hides itself from the mundane realm.
  • Set in the fictional city of New Camden, Northeastern United States
  • New Camden's magical community, including vampires, monsters and a variety of other things, are ruled by a court, and its current head is the Count Caradoc de Lacy of New Camden, along with his Lord's Council of representatives of the largest communities within New Camden.
Lord's Council representation includes the undead, goblins, and shapeshifters, others to be determined.
  • All the leaders were wiped out by an ancient warlock, an evil that has taken over the city with an army of supporters; some summoned, others recruited from those who felt discontent with the status quo ante.
  • Now the mortals are the targets of a new order that wants to come out of the shadows and rule. And this new order has a seemingly invincible leader.
  • The characters, from a variety of different backgrounds as magic users/supernatural beings, are fighting against this, and probably against some mortals too.
  • If you like adapting fairy tales and mythology to modern day settings and helping with lore creation/setting building, this is an RP for you.
  • For specific character sheet instructions, please see the "Characters" tab.
  • Also, setting up a chat for the RP; Here

In Character Info
Like many cities across the US, Camden, when established, soon attracted a supernatural population that followed the mortal one; feeding off them, living among them, concealing themselves from them. But they were always kept in check and in line by the Concealment Edict, which was enforced ruthlessly by an alliance of vampire elders, wizards and others that had survived the purges of the Inquisition. And it was the Concealment Edict that established courts within the cities to see to it that the supernatural population hid themselves. Some could move about in plain sight, others were essentially banished to the sewers or whatever other hole they could find.

This system also imposed an onerous degree of servitude upon the members of the community; they paid taxes up to this system in a variety of forms, either by paying money up to the Court or through indentured servitude. Some beings are able to put their talents to use and quickly accumulate wealth, which makes payment of the taxes easy. Others struggle in the modern world, forced to hide or otherwise unable to accumulate much in the way of wealth to pay the tithe.

Until only couple days ago, the system functioned. However, a Camden Museum of History exhibit that included an ancient Egyptian mummy arrived in town. A young mage that was studying the exhibit attempted, unwisely, a spell on the artifact, and the mummy, unknown to mortals and the magic community alike, revived, fueled by that magical energy (and siphoning the rest of the life energy off that hapless young mage.) He claimed to be Nemsemet the Terrible, and demonstrated powers of the sort only heard about in legend...only, there is very little to be gleaned about Nemsemet without digging – his name seems to have been deliberately eradicated from the histories.

Nemsemet quickly eradicated the Count Caradoc and his advisors, those who stood with him anyway, and proclaimed himself ruler of the city – not simply ruler of the city's underworld of supernatural beings, but its ruler entirely. It would seem a pompous claim, except for the way the sorcerer quickly eradicated those that faced him in open combat; many on one and he was still standing and practically unscathed.

In any case, Nemsemet quickly proceeded to rally many of the city's various undead into his cause, to take over the city and rule its mortals directly, unsubtly. Others, besides the undead, have joined him for a variety of reasons. Those that do not join his, at least for now, shadowy war against mortal government and institutions are considered foes and the ancient tyrant's minions are purging those individuals.

It is, perhaps, a hopeless battle, but there are a few willing to do what they can.

Out of Character Info
The RP is essentially about a shadowy war in the city streets that can easily become a terrible out and out war as the supernatural elements of the city. The characters don't merely have to discover how they can kill Nemsemet, and that's a tall order in and of itself, but they have to make some very hard decisions about who to save and when and where to fight.

The characters may well have reasons to not lament Caradoc de Lacy, but if they're in this group, they're at least somewhat aligned with those that do not agree with Nemsemet. As he is a brutal tyrant that uses raw power to eradicate foes, it's entirely possible that your character's motivation is revenge. Your character may also be part of the courts of another city, investigating the very disturbing rumors and phenomena present in New Camden.

Characters can be a variety of different types of supernatural being, so I am encouraging a degree of creativity. Lycanthropes, vampires, other undead, a variety of faeries, spirits and generally 'supernatural' types of beings (including half-angels or half-demons; come to think of it half-a lot of stuff... :) ) These factions all exist and individuals within these factions may well have their reasons to rally against Nemsemet.

Could we perhaps have a character skeleton to work with, as a basis for what you expect to know about them? I find it easier than say, whipping up my own because I have no clue if a Bio is wanted, or equipment, etc.

Yeah, there's a tab on RP threads that has the character sheets right there, handy and easy to access.

Anyway, the idea is just to work up characters using some sort of mythological basis -- I'm not saying their powers have to mimic myth. I'm saying that there should be a kernel of truth somewhere in the myths and the characters should be vaguely related.

We'll have to hash out what precisely the abilities of werewolves and vampires are, but I'm willing to let the first player to submit such a character set the tone, and I'll try to work with them.

Basically, be responsible and balance things out a bit. ;)

I know you've already got plenty of interest, but if you should require one extra player at any point, I can have a character sheet up in no time.

With as much interest as we had on the check and in the thread, it's probably a good idea to get things rolling fast. I've found that dithering too long can kill an RP.

So I am certain that we'll need players.

Also, I'm around for questions and to provide feedback.

I'll consider dibs when they're in a character sheet, at least in WIP form. I can't just hold a character type in reserve until there's at least a sheet up, basically. ;)

Cool. Anyway, folks, feel free to keep the character sheets short and sweet. I don't expect novels here, because we're going to do a lot of the character writing in the RP.

@Trinais and @KuroTenshi have posted characters and they are approved.

I am also closing off characters that have relationships to the heavens now; two is possibly more than we need, but I was liking the Nephilim enough to concede that a spare isn't a bad thing.

But that's that. Subsequent players should focus on different types of characters. Note, I didn't rule out anyone from the 'other' side of the metaphysical street.

Edit: Also, I'm bouncing around the idea of a werewolf who has translated his predatory instincts into conquering the business community. Perhaps he's from the ghetto and has established an entepreneurial foundation that trains people to get jobs and creates them through trying to salvage/repurpose old buildings in areas that are economically distressed.

Camden is a bit like Baltimore (naturally) in that it has lots of ghetto. Ghetto is a good place for supernatural beings to hide after all.

Also, Caradoc de Lacy isn't a vampire. He's a wizard. He probably has a vampire advisor that can run around the city in daylight and annoy a rival though.

@teapotshark Approved. I didn't expect a poltergeist, but then I see the advantages.

Also, we need to consider what factions of supernatural being are more aligned with Nemsemet than others. Nemsemet is at least as scary to the sight of the ghostly (I think she should be able to perceive spiritual energies, just a thought in regards to abilities) as he is to people that deal with him on a physical plane.

Also, as Trinais did, it might be interesting to figure out where and how characters are established within the magical community. In the case of your poltergeist, I think buying and selling information is a natural.

I also have a few interesting character development hooks that might help out.

  • A goblin or some form of faerie that is not particularly on the glamorous side of things that also has a hard time earning income, and so worked as an indentured servant to beings higher up on the Camden Court's foodchain who could command such service. Faerie powers are nothing to sneeze at.
  • A vampire, of course. Probably one that is feeling pretty alone in the city, since the vampires that Nemsemet rallied are the young (and not so young) ones that think they should naturally rule over the things they hunt.
  • The aforementioned werewolf business development guy/girl running a not for profit foundation when the moon isn't full.
  • Young wizarding nobility that is being hunted by Nemsemet as they are Caradoc de Lacy's current heir (pretty far down on the list, until Nemsemet came back and started killing off nobles. For kicks, infernal heritage, which is part of the reason this character was so far down the line of succession -- someone had a really scandalous relationship.
  • A medusa involved in organized crime. When the sunglasses come off, it's bad.
  • A noble from outside of the city, vassal to another city's Lord, that is there to investigate what is going on in Camden. Possibly trapped there somehow, perhaps by a geas. Nemsemet is not letting supernaturals slip the city, and he has enacted a powerful spell to keep everyone in and stop communication from going out. More on that in the first post, but yeah. That's a measure of how powerful Nemsemet is and it's freakishly beyond the wildest dreams of any city's ruling lord. They wished they had as much clenched fist as this thing does.
