Appearance:
Name: Scott Summers
Codename: Cyclops
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Powers:
Optic blasts - Scott's primary mutant power is the ability to release ruby-colored blasts of pure kinetic energy from his eyes, which are in actuality inter-dimensional portals between this universe and a non-Einsteinian universe where physical laws as we know them do not pertain. This non-Einsteinian universe is filled with particles that resemble photons, yet they interact with this universe's particles by transferring kinetic energy to any object or energy they touch. While he can easily produce blasts potent enough to kill an average human, it does take effort to increase the size, power, and length of the blasts. At present, he can maintain a relatively low-power blast (enough to cut through a human) for sixty-three seconds or fire a single blast with enough power to destroy a city block before mental exhaustion overcomes him and he is forced to rest and recover. This will likely increase with training and practice.
While the blasts themselves produce no heat, the immense friction they generate on contact with an object can very quickly superheat most materials, and thus it is not uncommon for the blasts to leave fires and red-hot melted metal in their wake. Another function of the blasts is the ability to create a resonance with any solid object, which allows the blast to ricochet off the object without causing any damage, giving him the ability to fire "banked shots" and hit multiple targets at once or targets that are out of his direct line of sight. While full resonance will cause no harm to the object being resonated, partial resonance will still impart kinetic force to the target, while also allowing the blast to ricochet to another target (albeit with less power than the original blast). With training, Scott will also be capable of resonating his blasts with multiple objects simultaneously, thus enabling him to ricochet a single blast off of several different surfaces. The blasts naturally possess no resonance with any objects in this universe and so by default will impart kinetic force (and heat as a byproduct) to any object they strike.
Psionic field - This aspect of his ability is a field of psionic energy that encapsulates Scott's entire body and allows him to control the release of energy from his eyes, in addition to making the rest of his body immune to its effects. It is by manipulating this field that Scott is able to vary both the intensity and focus of his blasts, as well as create a resonance with solid objects in this universe. Strong emotions, especially those of a more negative tone, have a tendency to disrupt this field and may lead to spontaneous, uncontrolled outbursts that can have a devastating effect on the surrounding people and environment.
A secondary effect of this psionic field is the resistance it provides against the energy and psionic-based powers of other mutants, as well as giving Scott the ability to augment his own body by the power of his will alone. In addition to making him entirely immune to his own powers, it also grants him some resistance against energy being manipulated by other mutants, especially in the case of those that absorb energy (as its primary purpose is to withhold the vast amount of energy being forced into his body from the other universe). Through practice and training, he has also learned to manipulate this field in order to impart low-level increases in strength, resilience, speed, stamina, and perception on himself, allowing him to lift just over five hundred kilos relatively easily, sprint at 100 kph, react to bullets mid-flight, take hits that would kill a normal man, and perceive things that would entirely escape the notice of a human (though he is still likely the weakest member of the team physically). In the case of psychics, the psionic field resonates with the energy it is containing to produce a form of psychic static, which when combined with his iron will makes his mind difficult to read and influence.
Spatial Awareness - Scott's sense of spatial awareness and geometry is superhumanly acute, and will allow him to instinctively deduce the correct angles involved in banking his blasts to hit multiple targets with perfect accuracy. This ability also extends to his understanding of physics in general, and allows him to predict various scenarios based on the angles, directions, and forces involved. For instance, he could predict where a building will fall based on which supports are removed and how various forces will react to such a change, allowing him to utilize the environment to his advantage in conjunction with his optic blasts (or even without them).
Skills:
Leadership - Military service during his young adult years has allowed Scott's natural leadership skills to blossom, and even after being shot down he displayed remarkable tactical ability when he turned a broken and scattered unit back into a cohesive fighting force.
Willpower - While Scott is naturally very stubborn and hardheaded, his willpower was put to the ultimate test once his optic blasts manifested and containing them required that he maintain complete mental control, as any potent outburst of emotion had the tendency to set off the blasts.
Martial Artist - In order to help develop his control, Scott turned to intensive physical training and exercise in the form of eastern martial arts, embracing the philosophy that greater control of the physical body equals greater control of one's mental state.
Pilot - As a child, Scott was given flying lessons by his father and when he reached the age of seventeen, joined the air force to become a fighter pilot, quickly becoming one of the best in his squadron and going on to perform in several highly acclaimed airshows following the conclusion of his military service.
Equipment:
While he may be more durable than an ordinary human, Scott is still very far from invulnerable and makes up for this by equipping himself appropriately when going on missions. His usual kit includes a body glove that is resistant to slashing and puncture wounds, covered by advanced matte-black armor plating capable of stopping any modern bullet. He tends to keep his head clear of protection in order to maximize his sense of spatial awareness, and will often carry at least one conventional sidearm for use when his optic blasts would be too obvious or his martial skills unusable.
Personality:
Stubborn, intelligent, and very in control. Scott is generally direct and honest in his dealings with others, which can sometimes come off as condescension or arrogance. Possessing a very analytical mind does not help with this, and in combination with the danger inherent in his ability it means that he generally prefers to be alone.
History:
Scott never really talks much about his life before the military, or his life during the military, or even his life traveling the globe after the military. In fact, Scott doesn't really do much talking about himself at all, but if one were to dig deep enough it would be discovered that he was the son of an air force test pilot who died in a plane crash when he was twelve, along with Scott's mother. Both he and his brother survived, but were separated by the foster system.
By the time he turned eighteen, the small orphaned boy had become a stubborn, intelligent young man who had decided to take on the world by enlisting with the air force to follow in his father's footsteps. His natural aptitude for aviation did not go unnoticed, and it wasn't long before he was recruited into a rather unique unit whose exact purpose and composition is still completely classified even today.
Following his military service, which ended with an honorable discharge just prior to the conclusion of his full enlistment period, he set off on a trek across the planet, buying a small plane and flying from small, no-name airport to small, no-name airport in a search of something that even he wasn't quite sure existed. He thought he found it in several of the monasteries and dojo's across Asia, but left each eventually.
He thought he found it again when he finally returned to the united states and was approached by a man who claimed to be assembling a team of people like him. People with extraordinary gifts, as he called them. For a time, Scott found what he'd been looking for, a sense of peace and belonging and the family he had lost so violently as a boy. He finally felt that Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted was a place he could live without the constant ache for something more. He even fell in love with another student, something he had never known he was even capable of after living his whole life secluded inside his own head. Life was good, but then she died.
She died, and more followed after. Humanity had discovered the existence of mutants, and the world had set itself on fire. Professor Xavier's team, now dubbed the "X-men" was rushing across the globe at a frantic pace, trying to put out the fires raging between human and mutant-kind. Even in spite of the death of his love, Scott still believed in the professor. He knew that what they were doing was right, and that every villain they put away saved thousands of innocent lives.
It worked in the beginning, but the villains were not content to stay in their prisons. One by one, they began to escape and unleash their terror again and again, while the X-men scrambled to respond and save the lives of the innocent. Yet even when they succeeded, the world's prisons were simply incapable of containing the threats they faced every day, and the pattern did not go unnoticed by the young man who had come to be known as Cyclops. He quickly grew disillusioned with the professor's dream, coming to the conclusion that villains cannot simply be imprisoned, they must be stopped. Permanently.
When he killed a villain for the first time, without trial or jury to declare guilt, the professor made sure he knew just how morally repugnant his actions were. Denying them their rights as sentient beings could not be allowed, and every man or woman had the right to a fair trial.
Except these ones didn't. There were no trials or juries on a battlefield, you either killed the man on the other side or he killed you, and in the case of the villains the X-men had to face, thousands more besides. To Scott's stubborn mind, the logic was infallible. If he didn't end them when he had the chance, and they went on to kill hundreds, thousands, millions, or even just one, that death was on him just as much as the murderer themselves. He had the means and the responsibility to stop these people, and he would do so by whatever means was necessary.
He had been approached by SHIELD before, but refused because of a blind allegiance to the professor, so when he came to them and requested a spot on their new team, it was a very short ride from vigilante to assassin.
