[CHAR] Arena FAQ/Advice

So right now, I have this character:



I'm at a cross roads of what to do with him.

One one hand, I have him listed as a psiconic, because I've never had a psychic based character before. His abilities would include telekinesis, and the like. But again, I don't know what really goes into one.

And on the other, I've used the picture before for a Bleach RP, specifically as a Pakumato(Thanks @Hansa), which are basically Espada, except made from a Zanpakuto spirit, instead of a Shinigami, or Hollow. His abilities were that of intellect, and different types of Ceros, which in this case would be translated into energy blasts and the like.

Which do you all think would be a better/more formidable character for the Arena?

It would be fairly generic if it were just another psionics guy that shoots energy blasts. If he is going to be a psionic user, then I say give him some kind of unique spin. Shoot he looks like an insect. Maybe he is from a planet in which insects evolved to be the dominant species, and over time developed a form of psionics that stems from a hive mind in which things are manipulated by a mental group effort. It would lead to the same sort of abilities, but just be a new way of going about them. Instead of. I am smart. Thus I have mind abilities.

Heh, an opponent that saturates the field with some sort of projectiles which seem the same but in which only a few are real would be really interesting. It would allow for powerful attacks that cover a lot of area with low energy cost, forcing your opponent into a guessing game to decide what attacks to avoid.

Hey Hansa! I thought about it, hahaha. But I lost the sheet for him, so. Hahah. the other pakumato i had, however, kept his abilities, just a different origin story.

So, I'm thinking he'll go the energy blast route, as well as keep his intellect.

I'm going to have his intellect ibe the reason he is able to change the properties of the energy blasts, as a result of using more of his brain power, and his synapses firing off at a faster rate, which will allow him to think faster as well.

The blasts will have their own properties, like the earth element one hitting more like a blunt object than a regular energy blast, and the fire one causing burns.

In a sense, he'll be sort of like Kei'taro, as far as variety - but like him, they won't be too strong(some consider Kei'taro strong, and to be frank, if used at utmost effectiveness, he probably is quite a handful. Personally, I don't think he is. Hahah)

It's hard coming up with superhero origin stories due to how cheesy they tend to come out. I was thinking of a realistically portrayed superheroine (who also uses guns and wear adequate crime fighting clothing) with powers kind of inspired by honey badgers (greatly enhanced durability being the primary power but also enhanced strength, speed, reactions, senses, etc.). She doesn't call herself badger related stuff but is sometimes made fun of and called that by others, acting like she's a copy of Wolverine or something.

So...the origins...can anyone offer any suggestions that I can steal from you? A badger biting her with teeth coated in a radioactive material or an alien badger giving her the powers was too silly for my taste. I was thinking she was almost crushed to death by a vending machine so the badger had no choice but to enhance her powers. haha

All superhero-esque characters that I use are from stories where pretty much everyone has superpowers. Keezheekhoni the Aspect of Phlogiston, Madelyn Boyd the Concrete Maiden, Martin "The Man" Montgomery, and many others all exist in my second universe. The superhero comic book fantasy world.

Generally that's how I prevent extremely cheesy back stories.

I was thinking of a realistically portrayed superheroine (who also uses guns and wear adequate crime fighting clothing) with powers kind of inspired by honey badgers (greatly enhanced durability being the primary power but also enhanced strength, speed, reactions, senses, etc.). She doesn't call herself badger related stuff but is sometimes made fun of and called that by others, acting like she's a copy of Wolverine or something.

Problem with cliche back-stories is that they're almost a necessity, there's literally no understanding the actions of a super-hero without sufficient motive, and most motives have already been stolen by comic book writers by now. Considering the nature of your character, I would just have random DNA mutation at birth be the cause of her body producing a number of proteins commonly found in Honey Badgers rather than humans, hence the superhuman stats, just an idea though.

Maybe her hiding in a trench near a honey badger's nest amid a military operation in the African deserts, where she gets turned into a bloody mush by an explosion, bits of a poor, blown up honey badger mixing in with her own flesh. Most are extracted afterwards, when she is rescued and brought to a hospital, but some remain, and when she is put into a regeneration camera of some sort, this turns her into a chimera with both human and honey badger DNA in her organism .

I like Vordy's idea. Maybe a few tweaks but it makes the most sense. Many superhero origin stories aren't as cheesy as you claim. Certainly there are some but then again many of those heroes were written in a time when pulp and cheese are what people wanted to read.

Had an idea this morning for a character that I'm currently brain storming, though I'd run the basic idea through here, see what you guys think.

Essentially, the character is a mana-less mage.

What this means is that he is a mage without access to the 'magical energy' required to actually cast spells, at least, not naturally. The reason for this is still experimental I have two main ideas

1. Some sort of severe allergy to mana, some kind of mana loss, or some kind of accident burning out his natural mana reserves.

2. My preferred idea at the moment, the character comes from an alternate Earth where Mana was the main 'fossil fuel', a few natural mages existed but for the most part raw primal mana existed in abundance in the atmosphere, but was used up about three hundred years after the onset of the industrial revolution. With no mana left save for very small trace elements the planet spiralled into chaos, with an apocalypse style ending where the few remaining humans fight for control and an even smaller group of mages scour the earth looking for precious 'mana potions' (they'd probably be syringes of pure mana) or even sacrificing their own blood or other's blood to create small amounts of 'black mana' (A type of impure mana that causes corruption in the user over time.)

In other universes my character would be unable to access the natural mana in the air due to its comparatively impure qualities compared to the mana of his planet, even black mana being purer by comparison. He would have a highly finite energy source, but when amped up with mana he would be capable of unleashing seriously powerful spells (like street destruction, bordering on city level.)

I'm trying to fill out a decent backstory, but that's the basic idea so far.

Sounds good to me. It is different and likely provides a great deal of interesting options and limitations in a ruckus.

The idea would be that

1. He has one mana 'potion' for each fight he enters, which is difficult to administer, and takes some time to kick in. To add another limitation that T1 somewhat overlooks, it will also burn out quickly if unused, so he can't just administer it immediately and walk around like a primed crossbow. (analogy is bad)
2. In a continuum his world would meld into the continuum, making very rare pockets of pure mana he could harvest for new potions.
3. Blood magic, basically.

Also, mana will be linked to his ongoing battle with both black mana corruption and ageing, making him something of a mana addict. I'll be retiring Isaac the ghoul because of this similarity, though the difference is between extreme physical capabilities and extreme magical capabilities.
