“Ha ha, no need to be so cold!” Moss said as he hurried to follow her, not at all understanding why she didn’t want to be partnered up with him.

Iris couldn’t really answer his question, and she didn’t want to. There were a number of reasons that she could say to him as to why she didn’t want to be partnered with him. Just saying one would be incredibly mean. Like in a previous relationship saying that you’re not attracted to them is a perfectly valid reason to not be with them, but saying it is just plain mean and reserved for when they deserve a “the reason you such” speech.

For a while the two of them didn’t talk. The two newly formed partners just walked in the woods, north, forward, and hopefully to where the relics are. If Iris’s calculations were correct they should be near other students, and should be facing opposition any time soon In mere seconds her predictions came true as four large Timberwolves jumped out at them from various directions.

Timberwolves were like a cross between a Beowolf and an Ursa. It was black quadrupedal Grimm with overly large fangs, a standing tail, bony armor, and the standard white bone mask with red eyes. They were fast creatures that moved in small packs. They use a square like formation to corner their prey. As one Timberwolf attacks from the front the remaining attack from any foreseeable opening. It was a clever play that made Iris nervously grip onto Rzeznik. “I hope you’re ready for a fight...” She did not want to fight, but it was inevitable. “Partner.” She added just as lunged forward to a Timberwolf with a smirk on her face.

“Partner... huh,” Moss said to himself as he processed the word, repeating it in his head as the timberwolves on the side began to charge at her back, made open when she leaped forward. What he really wanted was to be considered a friend, but he simply decided, “Close enough for now!” With ridiculous speed, he flipped towards the one on the left and redirected it away with another burst. Swiftly unsheathing his knife with his mouth, he used the propulsion from kicking the other one away to launch himself into the second Grimm before it even realized that Moss had moved. Moss didn’t give it the chance to, either, planting his knife through the back of its neck and sending it off with a boosted kick into the timberwolf he’d sent tumbling past his partner. “... And he misses the touchdown.” Moss said chuckling as the bone masks collided, forgetting about the fourth timberwolf behind him.

Running forward to the onyx beast she readied her weapon to her front ready to strike. As the monster's mouth opened flashing it’s fangs to her she lifted the staff and struck the monster down. It didn’t cause damage that could take the monster out. The attack was superficial, but using the force of the monster she managed to jump up high. Once her feet left the ground her semblance did the work effortlessly making her float up high. From a certain distance, the timberwolf she hit watched her. She ignored it as she loaded the staff with a large dust cartridge.

Iris landed a few feet away from the battlefield. Just as she landed a timberwolf rolled past her. Moss and three remaining timberwolves were in front of her. She was close, but far enough that the beasts ignored her and focused on her green eyed partner. Her staff glowed with light blue energy, the cartridge taking effect. She raised Rzeznik up high and struck it down pointing to the battlefield in front of her. Six yellow rays of light flew out of the green crystal and headed towards the beasts.

Iris watched as three glowing lights hit the Timberwolf that she had hit simultaneously. The yellow energy hit it’s black fur and destroyed it leaving behind a large black dust in the ground.. The other three hit the remaining wolves armor. Their natural defenses took most of the damage and only pushed them back a good distance away from her partner. It was not enough Iris thought her frustration with her own lack of power getting the better of her. She could ready a much larger attack, but she needed a diversion. “MOSS!” She shouted to him. “KEEP THOSE TWO BUSY!”

“Ah, that’ll be fun!” Moss replied, sheathing his knife and bouncing up just before the charging timberwolves would have collided with him. Their masks, charred by the searing lights, clunked together and made a slight shattering sound. Laughing as he landed on their heads and jumped away, he asked his partner, “Hey, how many ribs do ya think would break if I got hit by that?” This wasn’t really a good situation to find out since they needed to hurry and it’d be a bit hard to run like that, but Moss earnestly wanted to know. It was important to judge whether it’d kill him or not. “Hah, it wouldn’t be any good if I died,” He thought to himself, sighing as the two recovered and rushed at him again, furious at being dodged in such a way. It didn’t really matter if he were killed, anyways.

Thinking about that, Moss realized that it’d probably be a good idea to tell his partner about his semblance. “Since we’re going to be stuck together, she might freak out when I get eviscerated by something,” His own death wasn’t really a dark topic to him, but he understood that seeing someone die in front of them was usually a bit disturbing. “So I guess after this would be a good--” His thought were cut off by a clawed paw sending several, deep gashes across his back. The pleasant, buzzing feeling of pain jolted through his body, waking him up as he was knocked aside by another swing from the other timberwolf that cracked his collarbone and sent him tumbling. “Whoops!” Moss said, remembering that he was in a fight. Recovering onto his feet and blasting them back to make some space, he kept his distance until the attack was ready.

“This guys very talkative,” Iris thought as she took a battle stance. “I suppose everyone fights their own way. Maybe it is some sort of Psychological trick to focus.” She then realized that while Moss openly talked to her Iris did the same internally. She wasn’t replying to him to be mean, but simply to be efficient. Iris needed to get her weapon ready.

Rzeznik was store bought, but over time she has made minute changes. It used to be a single action staff that used one dust cartridge, but now she modified it to have multiple ones. Normally she’d have various stored inside, but those shots often came out weak, what she needed was a magazine with just one kind of dust that she can shoot out in one go. Iris was doing just that with red dust when she saw Moss get tossed. He was still alive.

“He is surprisingly tough. Not bad at all. Could be better.” Iris said out loud unintentionally. She locked and loaded the staff and aimed at the two remaining beasts. Rushing towards her partner Iris shouted “I’m ready to go. Get behind me unless you want to be burned to death.” Once she got close enough to the two beasts the green crystal glowed bright red, and from it came a crimson orb the size of an exercise ball. Using her body to swing the staff forward and shoot out the ball of energy.

The red ball of death contact with the Timberwolf that attacked his partner and was obliterated in a flash. It burned the wolf into nothingness as it continued moving forward. Eventually it destroyed the other wolf in the same manner and a decent number of trees that were unlucky enough to be in front of it. Iris’s attack left scorch marks on the ground, flames dancing around, and her seriously exhausted. It was a powerful attack, but it depleted her energy that she could barely maintain her Aura. She was alive and could definitely fight again, but not so soon, and definitely not enough to battle the recuperating Timberwolf that Moss fought earlier.

Making a somewhat disgusting face when he heard her remarks, Moss looked at up her as he flipped over the destructive sphere and cheerfully said, “Ehehe, that was really cold.” However, noticing his partner’s aura flickering after firing such a large attack, he darted over to finish off the last timberwolf before it could attack her. Noticing his charge, the Grimm opened its maw, causing its massive fang to plant itself into Moss’ gut. This surprisingly didn’t seem to phase him, as he forcefully kept the mouth open by squeezing his knees against its head and twisted its neck to an unnatural angle using his momentum.

Gracefully dislodging himself afterwards with blood oozing out of his wounds, Moss approached his partner with a somewhat concerned face. “Don’t use such a big attack if you’re going to put yourself in danger,” he said scoldingly, unaware of how hypocritical he sounded because he once again forgot to tell her about his semblance and didn’t actually need to avoid injury. “Anyways, if you’re tired, do you want me to carry you over to the, uh, wherever the relic-thing is?”

Iris was surprised for once. Her new partner was an odd little human being. He dared to scold her when he himself was injured. Given how calm he was she assumed he would be okay. “Duly noted, but I’ll be fine I just need a few minutes.” She rejected him quickly, but made sure to thank him for his efforts. “I take it you’re gonna be fine? If not we can rest for a while. The relic should not be that far, just a few meters north.” By her calculations they only needed to walk for a few minutes and then they should reach the relics, whatever they may be. Though Moss was a bit tired from blood loss, he enthusiastically said, “Yeah, I’m alright. Let’s get going.”
