On the cinematic big screens all over the world, both Marvel and DC are succeeding in sharing superhero multiverses with it's audiences. For generations, comic books have done the same. So I've been thinking, could the same be done in the form of play-by-post roleplaying?

Original Interest Check

This is basically a very ambitious RP project where we try to create a classic superhero multiverse (as Marvel and DC have done) and play out stories in it together. We are aiming for a very large group here, potentially over 20 people. Then we populate 3 threads (yeah, you heard me) each pertaining to one city, where stories will span them all in epic storylines. This is of course only realistic if enough of you guys join.

Now, you're maybe asking yourselves "Why would we want such a large scale roleplay. I've been having fun with my normal single-thread RPs". Well, here are the numerous perks of such an undertaking:
  • 3 seperate environments to keep things exciting
  • A large cast of heroes to interact with
  • Reduced risk of the RP dying
  • Genuine feeling of being part of a classic superhero multiverse!
  • Puny one-thread RPs are for scrubs

So now that I've convinced you to join our project, post your ideas here or, even better, join us in our Titanpad, where we chat with each other and write down ideas for everyone to see.

Be a hero - join us!

I have redirected here from the General Interest Check to say;

I AM SO DOWN FOR THIS!!!

*ahem*
That is all.

I'm not sure I actually have the time to do this, but I will MAKE time for it if it actually takes off. I love you so bad for having this idea <3<3<3
I may just offer you my soul and declare this my new religion

Or I'm just really exaggerating my excitement in order to really bring the point across that I am in love with this idea.

Hey there. Not expressing any interest in particular (though I am keeping a close eye on this game's progress), I just wonder if perhaps you've confused the meaning of 'multiverse' with that of a 'shared universe'. A multiverse, strictly speaking being the existence of more than one parallel universe in a science fiction (or in this case, super hero fiction) setting, not a traditional shared 'comic book' universe, as I think you see it.

You're probably right, but 'multiverse' sounds cooler.

Counting both interest checks, that's 12 interested players. I think I can safely start writing some stuff up.

There are some things we should discuss, however. Firstly, there is the choice whether we should use liquid time or not. For those unfamiliar with the term liquid time, it means that a character can be in several places at once. Since we will be having 3 seperate threads in this RP, liquid time would mean you could post with your character in all the threads simultaneously. In contrast, without liquid time you would have to stay in a single thread at a time, possibly limiting yourself to that thread for an entire story arc.

I see both pros and cons with both options, so I'd like potential members of the RP to discuss it either here or in the Titanpad. Also, please give reasonable arguments so that I can make a wise, educated decision based on your opinions.

I'm all in favor of liquid time. I've found the system extremely conducive for an RP environment, allowing for a multitude of plots to develop at the same time without the real-time wait for replies. However, if we do use liquid time, I would recommend the use of timestamps to better sort through the threads and give some semblance of chronological order. Timestamps are essentially dating the threads so that both the readers and the RPers can easily see what happens when during in a thread. For example, August 2nd, Morning, 2015.

The problem with timestamps is that it'll become more difficult for characters to transition between threads. Like, what if a character wants to reference an event that happened in thread 3 while in thread 1, but the timestamps make it so the event is in the character's "future". It really makes things very complicated.

I see your point, but what if you want your character to grow? With liquid time without a dating measure, it gets very hard to keep track of what happened when, so, hypothetically, if I wanted to have a very selfish character slowly became more heroic due to events that occurred in RP, I and the people I was RPing with would have no way of telling what 'version' of the character I was playing with. The selfish bastard or the reluctant hero.

Still interested. Waiting for more details so that I can edit Victor accordingly.

Edit: I think the best bet is to keep your hero in one thread/one city each, and don't RP them in each thread at once??? I mean, that seems the most logical to me.

@Gnome Johnson The whole point is for arcs to take place simultaneously. With timestamps I feel like that can get confusing. A story in thread 1 can continue in thread 2 and so on. The point of liquid time is to go beyond logic in order to fit more roleplaying into one play. If you want character growth, I think liquid time might be a bad decision, honestly.

@Dirty Dan This was my idea originally. Now that we're getting a lot of interest, it also seems viable.

At this time I am honeslty thinking that "solid time" is our best bet. We are becoming quite the large cast, which is perfect for this kind of RP. 13 characters, each in 3 seperate threads, might get confusing. I will gladly discuss this decision in the Titanpad
