You Die At the End

Nobody knows why the world ended. While people certainly did know where it started, those people are all since dead. In that sense, nobody knows where it began, when it began.

All that is known is how the world ended. The all-engulfing darkness that takes away all it touches.

You've lived in this small village, a mining village, for all your life. You know everyone who lives here as well as two people can know each other. And now, each and every one of you can see the end of the world approaching, that hellish darkness creeping in from outside the village wall. The estimate is seven days. It might be a little bit more or a little bit less, but regardless, it cannot be denied. Soon the darkness will reach you.

Here, we explore a central theme. When death draws near, what do you do?

Some will wallow in despair. Some will chase after hope and fight to the end. Some will make their bucket list and set on to fulfill it. Some people will decide everything has already ended, and act free of morals. Some will keep on trying to live normally, since death always mattered to them.

This is a roleplay designed to be bitter. Do not come here expecting a power fantasy, or magical girl hijinks, or a grand strategy battle. Nothing's wrong with any of those, but this is not their place. Come here expecting to play a character. That is all.

Live those last days of your life as you desire. Maybe there's a chance, however infinitely small, that you can find a way to survive, but who's to say? All that stands before you are your friends, family, and that ever encroaching darkness.

And as each day passes and it moves just a bit closer, you watch as the end comes. You watch as it takes away the mountains at the horizon, the lake where you fished as a child, the woods where the kids used to play, the very sky itself, and one simple thought flows through your mind.

You die at the end.

A few questions about the setting before I create a character:

-Is this the end of the world as we know it, or some other world?
-Is this going to be fantasy?
-Is human the only playable race?

Good questions, I would also like to know the answers to these. I'll make a character after that, just to be sure.

<Snipped quote by Necromancy>

A rural area, neighbored by a forest and a small lake about fifteen minutes into the forest, by walking. The nearest actual city is a good few hours away. Everything's real-world based, and set in modern-day. The village has been around for a while, but in recent years the switch to automation for the mine has been employed, though it's still in the basic steps.

Name: Lars Memminger

Age: 47

Gender: Male

Appearance: One can tell that Lars used to be something impressive - key phrase being "used to be". He's a moderately tall fellow at around 6'1", with stretch marks adorning his torso like trophies. Formerly handsome muscles are atrophying all about his body. On top of a wide set of shoulders sits a face. This face is old, dying. Wrinkles have already begun to set, and the dull green eyes are almost always set with tiredness, a look of some incomprehensible, quiet despair. Dirty blonde hair is fading to a dull grey, a fate which Lars' stubbly beard has already met. His body is well built, being slightly healthier than most American bodies. His skin is tanned, with faint wrinkles appearing here and there. Overall, Lars is exactly the type who you'd expect to see sitting along and hunched over in a bar, which incidentally, is how he spends many of his nights.

Occupation: Lars is retired, having made a large sum of money in his early life and never having to spend it on children or a partner. He used to be a biochemist working for a pharmaceutical company, but decided to leave this in his mid-thirties in order to move, "somewhere boring and quiet," as he put it.

Personality: Lars is grumpy. There isn't much more to be said for his surface personality, he's simply a grumpy old man. This is how he chooses to portray himself, as it minimizes the contact that he has to endure with "the filthy plebeians". At heart, Lars is a different type of grumpy than what he puts forth. Rather than being a perpetually annoyed, though without much reason, he has learned over the course of his life a simple truth: people are terrible. This does not exclude anyone, and it certainly does not exclude himself. Even the people who he considered friends are somehow tainted by this thought, and he frequently points out even the most superficial of flaws in a person simply because he can. This has also led to a bit of a superiority complex, in that between his belief that everyone is terrible and with his great scientific knowledge, he speaks to everyone in a manner that frequently doesn't make sense, and becomes irritated when they don't understand. Much of this stems from the hyperactive multitasker that Lars had been, and the consequences of disillusioning something so fragile. All in all, Lars is best defined by his frustration. Frustration for not being understood. Frustration with the folly of man. And now, frustration that the world is going to end before the next weekly happy-hour.

History: Lars was born unto a set of wealthy, loving parents. It was these two, charismatic individuals that over and over told him that he could do anything with his life if he just tried hard enough, that inevitably drove him to success. A drive was built inside of him, one which pushed him to discover new things, to seek more knowledge than anybody else. He succeeded, and for a while, it was good. Oxyenterothyline. Some anti... something drug. He doesn't even remember. All that matters is that people liked it, and it got him a good bit of money. It was around this time that Lars' mother began to develop cancer. He worked night and day, attempting to help in the development of some sort of... anything which would be able to help. In doing so, he ended up being at work when his mother died. At first, naturally, he was distraught. However, over time, he has begun to laugh, seeing "the beauty of irony" in it. His father has since fallen prey to a similar strain of cancer, but by this time Lars had lost any semblance of compassion for the man. He attended the funeral only so as to take advantage of the free food and wine. He's since stopped working and moved to a small town on the outskirts of society, where he enjoys relatively uninterrupted peace in a simple life. Upon discovering the end of the world, at first, he scoffed. "Nonsense". But, as evidence began to mount against him, he simply started grunting, fairly nonchalant about the whole affair.

"Maybe this is just the universe's way of giving me an easy way to die. I've lived a full life, got to hit all the milestones. Made some money. Retired. Saw good people die. And now, I'm out of ideas. So alright, universe, let's go. Hit me."

Name: Rhoda Cipra

Age: Ninteen

Gender: Female

Appearance: Rhoda is a short, stocky teen with tan skin and shoulder length hair. It's obvious that, at one point, it had been dyed firetruck red, but had been allowed to grow out, exposing about an inch of dark brown roots. She has light brown eyes outlined in thick lashes. Her eyebrows are kept fairly natural, having only been maintained enough to prevent the formation of a unibrow. She can typically be seen in black cargo pants, a dirty white tank top and a pair of worn out combat boots. She rarely wears jewelry and never wears makeup.

Occupation: Rhoda works in the mines. There's nothing fancy about her job.

Personality: Rhoda is exactly what you'd expect from a miner - loud, obnoxious, perpetually making crude jokes and swearing like a sailor. She's ambitious and works hard, though, when she's not working, she's very lazy. She likes to tinker with machinery and other electronics, though it would be easy to assume that, with the end of the world upon us, this hobby would become less doable.

In most settings, Rhoda tries to make the situation out to be fun. It's her way of coping with the fact that she hates her life. She's not one to show much emotion beyond that, though, inside, she feels a wide array of things.

A person would never be able to tell she's sad or angry. She doesn't like people meddling in her personal life. It's none of their business.

She doesn't take terribly well to random acts of kindness. Even though she lives in a poor household, she will almost always refuse food or money (or anything else), however, this may change with the end of the world.

History: Rhoda grew up in a rather poor household. A large family (ten to be exact. They are an immigrant family) in a four bedroom home living off of one man's paycheck and whatever odd jobs the children could pick up. Her mother stays home to watch the younger kids while Rhoda and her two older brothers "work." Just last summer, Rhoda applied for a real job and found herself among the grisly men and women of the mines. Her father is never home. He works as a landscaper. He has an issue with alcohol and often comes home drunk. He tends to come home, eat and then go right to bed. Rhoda has long since given up trying to form a relationship with him.

Like our friend above, this can be changed to better fit the roleplay.

@Sylverblu Approved. Feel free to move him to the characters section.

@Zmerr I like the base, but I'd like a little bit more fleshing out on her personality. As it is, it feels more like a list of traits than a person's holistic nature. Try to go more in-depth on how she thinks and feels, and how that interacts with the way she acts.
On the matter of her history, was she raised in Haven? If so, the matter of her household being particularly poor feels a bit off, given that there won't be a large amount of income disparity except for characters from the outside like Sylverblu's. Also, a family of that size would be rather out of place, considering the town's size.

I adjusted the character sheet a little. I hope it fits the requirements. I'm kind of at the point where I need to play her to really get a slid feel for her. Unfortunately, the means any edits to the personality section will be limited until I have the chance to see what she's like. I can always change that on the character sheet at a later time.

As for the history, I only made the change that she's an immigrant. The size of the family lends to the fact that they are poor. It's abnormal for a family to be so large and therefore makes it difficult to make ends meet with only a handful being capable to work. If you need it, we can work out the details about where she was raised. At this point, it doesn't seem to me to matter much, but I'm also not the GM. Let me know what you think, @A Cute Angel. I'm more than willing to change things if I have to, but would like to keep her as is if I can.
