Jedi Padawan Rylos Shimazu
Name: Rylos Shimazu
Age: 21
Species: Human Cyborg
Appearance: Rylos stands at around 6ft and has an average build. Like most Jedi, he is physically fit and carries with him large muscles that have seen years of training. He is olive skinned with a good complexion and has thick dark hair. His most distinguishing features are his implants that are visible on various parts of his body; the most obvious ones being the ones beneath his eyes on his ears. Were it not for his implants, Rylos would probably be considered moderately handsome. Rylos tends to wear the typical Jedi attire; a grey robe over grey clothes.
Force Abilities:- Core Abilities - Telekenesis, Mind Control, Force Jump and Force Speed
- Force Empath – Rylos has a very strong ability to empathise with others through the force. Using this ability he is able to read their emotions, and can almost always tell when someone is lying. As an extension of this, he is also able to reflect his own emotions onto others when they are particularly strong (but he doesn’t really have control over this). Unfortunately, given how strong this ability is, he can occasionally be bombarded with the emotions of others.
- Drain Knowledge – Almost as an extension of his force empathy, Rylos is able to use the force to drain knowledge. This is a very limited ability however, for it currently requires Rylos not only to make physical contact but requires an incredibly amount of concentration. Even then, Rylos has so far only been able to obtain little glimpses of information.
Non-Force Abilities:- Lightsaber combat – Rylos, like most Jedi, has a good understanding of Form I (Shii-Cho). As was the case with many Jedi of his time, he was more used to coming up against blaster fire than melee weapons (especially when investigating crime syndicates); as a result he was taught Form III (Soresu) by his master. Following his master’s footsteps, he wields a yellow lightsaber.
- Translator – Rylos has top grade audio cybernetic implants that allow him to automatically translate over hundreds of languages. What cannot be translated through speech, Rylos makes up for through his use of empathy. There are still hundreds (if not thousands) of languages that Rylos doesn’t know, but there’s always the potential for an upgrade.
- Pain Resistance – Rylos has cybernetic implants that help regulate his chemical and hormonal reactions to reduce pain. These were implanted after his force empathy kept leading him to developing migraines. He can still very much feel pain though, and can be physically injured as easily as any other human.
- Investigator – As the pupil of a Jedi Investigator, Rylos has spent years taking part in investigations and has learned a great deal. From analysing crime scenes to interviewing witnesses, Rylos is on his way to becoming a top-notch investigator. He has experience combating both crime and hostile political actions (e.g. assassinations).
- Shuttle Pilot – Having become accustomed to traveling around on the core planets, Rylos is now competent at flying the average commercial shuttle. He has yet to fly anything capable of space flight though.
Personality/Motivation:Rylos is a very kind and social individual, with a very strong moral compass. It is his strong sense of empathy that guides him and gives him a strong sense of justice. Because of his use of Force Empathy, he often feels a range of emotions and this separates him from many of his brothers and sisters. Although they are not his emotions per say, because he often feels things like anger and sadness and does not try to block these out, he could be considered a grey Jedi. Despite all this, he has very good control over his actions; if he acted on every emotion (especially when they weren’t his own), he’d have fallen long ago.
Biography: Rylos was born on Coruscant and was the second child of Roku Shimazu, the sole owner of Shimazu Industries. His mother was the second wife of Roku, and thus Rylos’ older brother was only his half-brother. Growing up in a ludicrously rich family on the prestigious capital planet, Rylos clearly had a very easy life when he was young. Shimazu Industries after all were considered to be one of the best manufacturer of top-quality cybernetics in the galaxy (although they were certainly far from one of the largest). When Rylos was around five years old his force sensitivity became too obvious to hide, and his father reluctantly agreed to let the Jedi take him to be trained.
Like most younglings, Rylos was trained at the Jedi Academy for years before taking his initiate trials. As a student Rylos was not considered to be a prodigy of any sort, and in fact some instructors felt that he was a rather bad student. It was felt that Rylos spent too much time talking to and distracting other students, rather than focus on his training. This was made worse by Rylos’ father’s insistence of maintaining a presence in his son’s life; given his influence and nearby proximity, the Jedi were unable to do much to stop this (save for locking Rylos away). Many of Rylos’ teachers worried that he would be unable to conquer his emotions and his external loyalties due to the amount of social interaction he was having. One Jedi however disagreed, a Togruta Investigator by the name of Bastila Leneer. Leneer saw that Rylos had a strong sense of empathy and believed that if he was tutored correctly could make a fine Jedi (and in particular, a fine investigator). As a result, Leneer took on Rylos as her first apprentice not long after his twelfth birthday and the two quickly formed a strong bond.
Accompanying his master and sharing her assignments, Rylos went on to investigate accusations of corruption and criminal syndicates across the Republic. These were cases that the regular authorities or Republic Intelligence were not quite equipped to deal with. Many of these cases involved criminals taking advantage of the Separatist Crisis, and on quite a few occasions the master and apprentice were drawn into some fierce battles. Although Rylos was able to develop his use of Force Empathy quickly under the guidance of his master, he had grown irritated at his inability to understand the languages of many species that he met; unlike his Master, who had mastered many languages. Deciding that he did not have the time to learn so many languages by natural means, Rylos ventured home and convinced his father to give him cybernetic implants. As a result he acquired visible ear implants that were able to pick up audio with increased clarity and which automatically translated hundreds of languages to him. Following his implant, Rylos found it easier to communicate whilst on investigations and it seemed to boost his development of force empathy.
After a few years under his master, when he was 18 years old, an assassination attempt was made against Senator Padmé Amidala. Following this event, Rylos and Leneer was tasked with investigating the attack and finding the culprits. Although the actual assassin was apprehended by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker before being killed by Jango Fett, their investigation led them to finding other assassins that were planning similar attacks. Because of this, Rylos and Leneer spent much of the Clone Wars on Coruscant and other core planets working with Republic Intelligence to prevent further attacks by/on behalf of the Separatists. During this long period, Rylos’ almost mastered the basic concepts of Force Empathy, being able to read and feel most people’s emotions. In fact it reached a stage where sometimes he would pick up on them too easily and struggle to block them out; because of this he began to suffer severe migraines and was forced to receive more implants in order to manage the pain.
Towards the end of the Clone Wars the Jedi Council began to grow weary of the power that Chancellor Palpatine was amassing, and also of the actions that his council was taking. Under the direct orders of the High Council, Rylos and Leneer were tasked with investigating Armand Isard, the Director of the Senate Bureau of Intelligence and a close ally to Palpatine. Their investigation, whilst it did not find any particular wrong doing, did reveal that Isard was very secretive and seemed to dislike the Jedi. The most they found was that Isard had removed many subdirectors for corruption with little evidence, but were unable to make a strong case of this.
When the Battle of Coruscant erupted, Rylos and Leneer were among the Republic Forces following leads of Darth Sidious. They were actually on their way to 500 Republica to meet up with Mace Windu and Captain Dyne when the chaos begun. They were forced to redirect their attention and fight in the battle, helping the republic to win various skirmishes. Once the battle was over they led the squad tasked with finding Captain Dyne and continuing the trail after Darth Sidious, but were unable to locate either.
At present, Rylos is not far off becoming a Knight and is expected to pass the last of the trails in the coming months. Moreover, his ability to use Force Empathy has continued to grow past expectations. He has recently discovered that when confronted with his strong emotions that he unwillingly projects them onto others. He has also successfully managed to drain some knowledge using the force during interrogations, but only little snippets. When Operation Knightfall begun, Rylos was waiting for Leneer in the Jedi Temple; the two were set to meet up before arresting Isard under the orders of Mace Windu.
Secrets:Whilst those that know Rylos are probably aware of his ability to use Force Empathy, only a couple of people truly understand the extent of this ability. This is not a secret per say, but rather something that he tries to be discreet about.
Relations:Bastila Leneer – The Jedi Knight and Investigator that took on Rylos as a Padawan. Unlike other Jedi, she did not see Rylos’ high levels of emotion and empathy as a negative thing, knowing that it could make him an effective investigator. The two became very close and had very much a brother/sister type relationship.
Captain Dyne – Rylos has worked with Captain Dyne on multiple occasions, with Dyne often acting as the Republic Intelligence’s liaison to Leneer and Rylos. Following the Battle of Coruscant, Rylos and Leneer were sent to try find Dyne, who had last been seen following the trail of Darth Sidious beneath 500 Republica. Unfortunately they were unable to find any signs of Dyne nor the Sith Lord.
Mace Windu – Rylos had met Mace on a few occasions, especially as the Clone Wars were drawing to a close. It was Mace who personally instructed Leneer to investigate Isard, and he shared with them the council’s worries regarding the Chancellor.
