Whittier, Alaska, is a sleepy town tucked between picturesque mountains, frigid sea, and plenty of forest. But if you're picturing a small huddle of houses, think again. Instead, on the edge of town, there stands a 14-story building called Begich Towers- a former Army barracks, resembling an aging hotel, where most if not all of the town's residents live.
Finding your way to the remote town isn't very easy, and it’s even harder to find your way out. You can get to Whittier by sea or take an often closed, one-lane tunnel through the mountains. This is why residents inside Begich Towers have everything they need under one roof.
1. Main Registration Office & Boiler Room 2. Post Office 3. Police Station & Fire Station 4. Jail & Drunk Tanks 5. Tavern & Restaurant 6. Church 7. School 8. Internet Café & Coffee Shop 9. Laundromat 10. Grocery & Convenience Store 11. Residential Rooms 1100-1105 (Employees of Tower) 12. Residential Rooms 1106-1110 (Single & Family) 13. Residential Rooms 1111-1115 (Mayor & Wealthy) 14. Mayors Office & Tower Meeting Room
With the annual 30 days of night quickly approaching, the residents of Whittier are going about their appropriate preparations for a month long of darkness. However this year happens to be very different than the rest.
During this year’s “lights out” monsters within people come to surface. Your parents, your significant other, even your own children could have hidden monsters within them. It would only be revealed during this time. Along with the residents, outside forces of evil seem to flock to the towers during this event.

Small Biography: From a young age, Ichiro had been a wild child, becoming the local boss of the punks at his school, then moving up to become a high-standing member of the Yakuza. When his boss was killed in a turf war with a rival family, Ichiro had had enough. He convinced one of his closest friends to help orchestrate a complicated plan to fake his own death. After a minor mishap, Ichiro's friend was killed. To honor the sacrifice, young Ichiro vowed to give up crime for the rest of his life and to live as a good man, taking on his current name. Soon after he became deeply involved with Buddhism and found his hope once more. With a new zeal for life, he began school to learn the ancient techniques of Japanese body art, then painting, and finally moving on to calligraphy. Keeping his face hidden from the public eye wasn't easy, but he managed it. After his successes, he decided that kendo would be the perfect martial accompaniment to his Buddhist practices. He became renowned in kendo competitions and amassed a large following of students. After some time, he passed the dojo onto his most skilled and senior student, feeling like his time in Japan was coming to a close.
Mr. Takenaka moved to Whittier a couple years ago, wanting to get away from the bustle of the daily world. He felt that society itself had closed him off from true enlightenment, being a devout Buddhist. After amassing a fortune from his line of tattoos, paintings, customized calligraphy, and a world-renowned kendo dojo Ichiro felt he had accomplished enough to honor the memory of his friend. He sold off his various parlors as well as his galleries of valuable paintings and calligraphy, some being his own. He kept only the minimal of worldly possessions and fled Japan to take residence in the isolated town of Whittier.
I'm thinking that they will be like vampires yes, maybe some surprising things to make them unique to our story; perhaps even something like a wendigo? Might be interesting to explore. My thought would be that the people would be turning into one of these "vampire" like monsters by being bitten AND they can also turn into their own monster because of their characteristic flaws of sort.
My mind is still debating things about this. First day in the roleplay is going to be 1 evening before the 30 days of darkness; giving people some time to get a feel for one another as well as for me to have time to keep figuring out things hahaha.
So far this is how I'm leaning.
Normal monsters: Mindless killing machines for sport and food.
Humans bitten by monsters: Relatively slow transformation- human at first, once changed mindless.
Humans that are 'flawed' monsters: Still debating. I'm not sure if I want to have it be that they are mindless or that they have full human conscience but everyone else seems them as a monster- as suggested; a silent hill type thing.
Humans vs Monsters completely I'm thinking.
Though I'm sure if a loved one becomes a monster you might have different thoughts.
Gradual change on top of full on monsters would be cool. It would be awesome roleplaying the transition, if you were unlucky enough to be bitten/scratched/whatever. It would also be interesting to see how the characters react to losing their humanity. Would they keep hold of it for as long as possible and help the survivors? Or would they give in and embrace their inner monster? Decisions, decisions...
Maybe for our characters, there could be a mixture? They start mentally degrading, but once the epidemic really starts to spread some may stabilize in the face of tragedy, like some people do. They stay away from the uninfected humans and fight the monsters as well. Would definitely lead to some interesting posts I think.

But I really like this idea too. It would be be very dramatic, degrading our characters' mindsets the more they changed into their monster forms. So I'm leaning towards your second option.
Perhaps our non-bitten monster friends have a better chance to redeem themselves and even survive the 30 nights depending on their mental strength and the support of the group? If someone that turns into a monster is a recluse and lives alone their morale is going to be much worse than someone with a support team- making the change a bit faster and perhaps even more severe?
I think our original monster bitten characters should still remain at a basic rate of change, maybe like within a day. Just so that there are some hopeless cases. These occurrences would be however just for NPCS, People that have abandoned the roleplay, and by request of course (:
I like that idea, if only because Ichiro is a very disciplined kind of character and along with his spirituality would be one of those slow transformations. Plus, I really like the character! lol
I do not mind playing a couple of knuckleheads that are the first to die in the horror movie, though. xD
Here we are. Gonna update it fairly soon but wanted to get it up quickly.
Appearance: Jasmine is Caucasian. She's a stunted girl standing at 5'1. Lean build, flat as a board, clear complexion. Very light blond hair, braided extensively and reaching down to her chest and shoulder plates. Pale blue eyes, with eyebrows almost always etched into a scowl. Average nose, thin lips. Never seen without her rasta beanie, which her dad bought for her some time back. Has a button with the number thirty-seven pinned to it. Accustomed to warm, baggy clothing on all occasions.
Name: Jasmine Plunkett Age: 20 Gender: Female
Years in Whittier: Five months Occupation: Unemployed Room Number: 1107
Personality:
+ Consistently honest, not one to lie about much. + Handles hostile situations fairly well. + Trustworthy, follows through on deals and promises always. - Adamant, even when proven wrong. - Quick to make a play before thinking it through. - Subtlety is an alien concept to her.
Small Biography: Jasmine was born in the upper part of California under fairly normal conditions. However by some happenstances she's not privy to the specifics about, she was put up for adoption and moved out of the state during her earlier years. After some time of growing up into a rambunctious little girl in an average orphanage, she was taken in by a single father earning a modest wage and moved to Seattle. There she stayed for a good bit, further developing her tomboyish, constantly angry nature. Her new dad didn't seem to mind, but nonetheless she made sure not to cause too many problems for him. She got a cheap education, but managed to excel in most of her classes, particularly those of a literary variety. She displayed a, some would say, "colorful" choice of words. In Jasmine's own description she'd say, "I will scry the letter etches off my think-pan if I goddamn FEEL LIKE IT."
As time went on there was a gradual falling out between Jasmine and her guardian. He was incidentally the one causing problems around the household, getting involved with some shady individuals. Scams to nab some cash, mostly. He'd turned from a decent guy who wanted to raise a child after losing his first one into a wannabe criminal, thinking it was a better option to support the family of two than the odd jobs he was already pulling. Jasmine put up with it for the time being, hoping he would wise up and knock off his shit.
He didn't.
The turning point came when Jasmine's dad showed up one night with a gym bag full of money and no inclination to explain where it came from. Yelling ensued, with Jasmine threatening to call the police. The heat boiled down to an impromptu compromise - Jasmine would take some of the ill-gotten cash and move out to fend for herself, keeping silent about the ordeal, or she'd pipe up. Either way, she didn't want to be around anymore. Dad wished she'd see things from his perspective, but nonetheless, he let her go without incident, with both promising that they wouldn't rat each other out. Jasmine was left with one last bit of advice - move somewhere out of the way. Nice, cozy, safe.
Whittier was just the place. Jasmine always liked cold weather.
