NONE OF YOU THOUGHT I WOULD REMEMBER, BUT I DIIIIID!!! (Sort of!!! >.< )
Those of you who actually remember who I am, buckle up.
(Approximately) one year ago today, Guild user K-97 posted a thread expressing his affection for the Spam community. In response to this, I, too, felt like making a thread about such a topic (which I unfortunately don’t have bookmarked…), and thus, it started a classic Spam bandwagon in which many threads came up of Spam members expressing their love for Spam, and that bandwagon peaked one day after K-97’s original thread was posted, on the day that I thought was September 29th… And so, it was proposed that the day the bandwagon peaked should be remembered as a ‘Guild holiday’ of sorts — specifically, Spam Appreciation Day.
But so many members laughed that off and assumed that no one would remember — that it would go by the next year without a single mention. And I, disheartened by such remarks, took it upon myself to remember Spam Appreciation Day one year later, and made the necessary preparations to ensure that I would be ready to come back and prove to all the nay-sayers that someone did remember — even if that someone doesn’t even really use this site anymore. Spam Appreciation Day was remembered.
…Unfortunately, as some of you may have noticed by now, the date mentioned in the thread that I posted to was September 24th, not 29th, which means that I, having not noticed this error until it was too late, did in fact let Spam Appreciation Day go by without a single mention… as I have gone back a few pages on here and confirmed that no one else made a thread about it.
BUT, I will not accept defeat so easily. Because, even if I may have unfortunately misremembered the exact date, I did remember Spam Appreciation Day. Even after I left the Guild and started a new chapter in my life, I kept in my mind that conversation that happened, and the assumption that not a single person would be dedicated enough to remember. These past couple weeks, especially, Spam Appreciation Day has been at the forefront of my mind, as I’ve been preparing for it, making sure I didn’t forget to come back on September 29th… My only mistake being that I did not check to make sure that I had the correct date marked down on my calendar.
But, the point is,
I
DID
REMEMBER
And if I’d only noticed my mistake sooner, I would’ve certainly been here on the 24th.
So, why did I bother to come back here now that I don’t even use Spam anymore? Was it just to prove myself right? Well, yes, but there’s more to it than that. I value the communities formed in forums like these, and I probably still stand by everything in my own ‘I love Spam’ thread (though I can’t say that for sure, because I don’t have that thread bookmarked and I don’t remember exactly what I said). I had some good times in Spam. This forum practically acted as its own entity, completely separate from the Guild, and, for better or for worse, I must say I’ve never come across another community that felt quite so close-knit. I’ve never seen another forum where everyone was so eager to write fanfiction about each other (really elaborate fanfiction, I might add!!) or draw comics where everyone was a cat, or just be able to list each other’s names as well as Spam members could — not even in the homeyness of the forum that I spend most of my time in now. And, you know what? I even miss the bandwagons. Yeah, they were stupid, but they were a Spam kind of stupid. Do you know how many bandwagon threads I saw just from going back a few pages to see if Spam Appreciation Day was mentioned on the actual 24th? Many bandwagon threads. I could tell that a bandwagon had happened just by skimming over the thread titles and not even needing to investigate further. And, honestly, I kind of miss that. (Also the fucking ‘Men vs Women Race to 1000’ thread is still going after all this time and if that’s not a testament to what Spam stands for then I don’t know what is.)
And, so, the assertion that not a single person would remember what Spam meant to them… that hurt. I figured that Spam needed more love than that; that’s why I made sure I didn’t forget.
And even now that I’ve found myself elsewhere, I do still miss the sort of community that Spam had. Even the closest equivalent on the forum I’m on now just doesn’t feel quite the same. And that feel is hard to describe, but, I think it should be remembered that it means something. And it means enough that, when someone suggested a Spam Appreciation Day, yes, someone did remember.
…Also I really wanted to prove myself right and see how people would react to me actually remembering one year later.
