Well. through a quick google search, I was able to find the story, and a number of people are talking about guns and toxic masculinity. I'm actually laughing at the concept of toxic masulinity. Here's what the geekfeminism wiki defines it as:

"Toxic masculinity is one of the ways in which Patriarchy is harmful to men. It refers to the socially-constructed attitudes that describe the masculine gender role as violent, unemotional, sexually aggressive, and so forth."

So, it's feminist bullshit about men being inherently destructive and evil. People are using this 1 event of a piece of shit being a piece of shit to justify the bullshit concept of "toxic masculinity."

It's extremely unlikely that someone's gender decides how violent, unfeeling, or generally evil they are. Those aspects of personality take a number of factors, not just "Are they male or female?" It makes me mad when anybody goes and says that 1 gender is inherently something (such as all men being evil, or all women being whores) or any group for that matter. Reducing people into groups fucking sucks, i mean, they are individuals, and not the exact same as someone else.

At least in this case, it's more likely that the kid was influenced by his surroundings (friends, family) and just became a whiny, spoiled brat, who felt like no one liked him. There are men like this, and women like this, so deal with it. Gun control might be something to talk about in reference to this, but "toxic masculinity" certainly is not.

All right, rant about bullshit is over. If someone wants, I can link to the articles that I found about the incident, since they are only a google search or two away.

I think you misinterpreted what you quoted. Like, nothing you said flowed from the definition you provided. It seems they are saying that 'toxic masculinity' describes men feeling socially pressured to behave in a way that is accepted as masculine even if doing so is destructive to them. They aren't saying that men are innately violent, but rather the opposite, that men are being pressured into behaving that way despite their instincts. Knowing the way teenage boys work because I was one once, I think there is some validity to that.

I don't know if it is relevant to this case or not, but the concept as a whole isn't crazy unreasonable. You just have to avoid the reactionary knee-jerk when you read about it. They aren't blaming you, relax, they are just hypothesizing how social constructs related to gender might have an effect on a case like this.

Women aren't outside of patriarchy. While it's perpetuated by male power, women can still receive, accept and pass on patriarchal ideas. Not every woman is a feminist, or understands feminist theories enough to call bullshit.

There are those sorts of people who get the concept of patriarchy confused; they talk about in a way that accidentally turns it into an entity rather than a cultural idea, so that the 'Patriarchy' is used the same way somebody might use 'Illuminati'. Yes. Those people are wrong. But the fact that there are nutjobs on the fringe doesn't detract from the legitimate arguments they are getting confused. In the same way Christians shouldn't be summed up by Westboro Baptist Church, and Muslims shouldn't be summed up by ISIS, Feminists and Progressives shouldn't be summed up by sixteen year old shut-ins on tumblr.

I honestly think whether patriarchy exists is a matter of opinion. I can admit it did exist, but the extent it carries on into modern society is up to interpretation.

Toxic masculinity is also one of those grey areas for me. I agree with it somewhat, just not full acceptance.
