The differences run from Writer to writer. Add in theoretical physics and he could websling a 20 ton car thrown at him for his hammer throw, since it is already airborn, he needs less strength to adjust its flight path than to actually get it moving from a still position.
Lever, wheel/axle, pulley, ramp/wedge...Science!

Yes there were, but he does both. The organics are his default and the mechanical shooters are for when he is either using specialty webbing or needing to replenish his organic fluids.

Pretty much. Since you are 'super new' don't try to go too far over the board. Pick someone you've always liked and work in that bubble. You can change everything but the powers. So you can effectively swap powers between two heroes and make someone all new. List your top 5 favorite comic characters in DC or marvel, there are a LOT of powersets so don't be afraid (in avengers assemble cartoon, the squadron supreme is the justice leauge from DC: Hyperion=superman, Nighthawk=batman, Zarda=Wonder woman, Dr spectrim=green lantern, speed demon=flash and nuke=Catain atom )

But I'm fairly well versed in the Marvel EU, and I have a mutant character that's been sitting on the sidelines of my brain for a while, so with a few tweaks she'll probably be power based on Magma (Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla) from the X-Men. Also, while the name Magma is kinda cool, am I allowed to change it?

Absolutely. Just tell us who you are using for a basis so we an cross them off the list of taken characters. Magma is an excellent choice.

How acceptable would it be to do Thor, but as a member of a different pantheon? Roughly the same powers but a different completely flavour of god and with a very different family and origin.

I was thinking of doing Taranis, the thunder god of the Tuatha de Denann, the celtic pantheon.

As long as you do not fiddle with the powers by taking a different pantheon, then it should be acceptable. Marvelhas always had specific tiers of power to macro and micro the heroics at a time

Both seem in the proper power scale of this game. You can change every facect except for the powers of the character. You can even assign the power set to a different character entirely to basically swap powers out for your favorite character. Want to make bruce banner a billionaire philanthroist and playboy? At least he can afford to replace what he broke. Want Wolverine to be the lord of wakanda? Have fun!

I was just going to stay with the same powers Thor normally has. Super strength, durability and endurance along with being unageing. I was going to switch Mjölnir for a Celtic mythological sword call Fragarach, which has similar powers. It grants power over the winds rather than lightning though, which would at least allow the wielder to fly in a similar way to Mjölnir. But as Taranis is the god of storms, he'll have the same powers just slightly different sources.

Does that sound acceptable?

just me, i'm not co gm, but i'd say okay since it is just a different focus the same powerset to emphasise wind manipulation over lightning but still having both. Thor can create storms and hurricanes as well as blast thunder you just hapen to blast thunder as well as creating storms and hurricanes.

Ok, heres another question.

Can Origins or powersource of said powers be changed?

IE, Hulk, but instead of gamma radiation, its magic infusion, or something of that ilk.
