Sadly I cannot claim this as my own guide, but I do think that it is rather important piece that I believe many people should take the time to think about. It'll be worth watching the video to see Mark Crilly's explination for each point, but I'll list the points below as a quick reference.
1: Create the kind of thing you yourself would enjoy.
2: Everything should be a choice: not something done automatically out of habit.
3: Specifics are more interesting than gereralities.
4: Be aware of how accessable your work is.
5: Less is more. (Or it can be, anyway.)
6: You don't need to obsess about creating your own "style."
7: There are very, very few rules: Everyone finds his or her own way of doing things.
8: Content dictates form.
