Jett Haven, Mako Akane
Akane was back at her desk. Watching Kiwi work was entertaining, but she hadn’t given her a reaction, and that was boring. She always knew what would annoy Mako the most. Akane shrugged, and went back to her tasks at hand; sorting out the paperwork for the students. Luckily, paperwork for students who got in through recommendations had been done before school started, but a lot of students, both in the Hero and Support classes, were determined today, and Mako herself had been busy this morning just getting their names, and busy during the first exercise on-site, keeping an eye on things. It was only after she had brought Lysander back, and eventually left the nurse’s office, that she finally got back to work.
Still, this would all be finished by tonight. There was one thing she had to do before the students all run off to do student things, and that was deliver Mr. Haven’s Student ID card. She had heard he was a lot like his grandfather in terms of appearance. The Frenchmen; a Hero she herself had found herself face to face with on multiple occasions, though he was not among the party who finally defeated her. Even so, he was a fine hero, and if Jett took after him, he too would be a great hero. Still, not picking up your Student ID card was a good start…
”Jett Haven,” the school’s tannoy chimed sweetly after class had ended and students began making their way out,
”Please report to the front desk to collect your Student ID card.” Nothing like a bit of public embarrassment to lift Ms. Mako’s spirits.
Jett perked up at the sound of his name. It happened just after he sat down. He instantly recognized that voice. A slight red blush appeared on the boy's face as he imagined Miss Mako saying his name like that. But even more when he realized it was because he forgot to pick up his ID card before school started.
He did notice some random kid walk in but didn't bother with it as he quickly excused himself. For two reasons. He needed to get there and back so Elvira didn't wander off again. And the second. It's Miss Mako. He got a chance to finally see her, but he also knew she had a fiery temper at times. He didn't want to be on her bad side. After bolting out of the classroom, he ran down the hall to the stairs.
Weaving and dodging between the flood of students moving about. Flowing through them like a swift stream. As he came to the stairs which was blocked completely by students walking up. He didn't even hesitate in his steps as he vaulted the third story landing, reaching out he grabbed the window frame and his feet slamming into the side frames and just as quick as he grabbed he pushed off and landed on the second landing. Spinning around he then jumped onto the railing and slid down to the ground floor. Falling into into a full sprint. He suddenly realized he sprinted by Kasuke but he couldn't stop to chat.
There was another clog in the halls and Jett moved to the left side of the hall and ran up the wall with three steps and pushing off and diving over the students. As he cleared them he rolled to his feet just before reaching the corner to the front desk.
He slid to a stop at the corner that would lead to the front desk, just stopping just outside it so it looked like he was walking the entire time.
That's when he saw her. His brain shut down for a minute as his mouth was slightly open. Miss Mako was certainly one of the top most beautiful women in his book. He had a crush on her ever since she started out. Even had a thought to turn to a life of crime so he could meet her and not have to capture her.
He shook his head and straightened his coat and sleeves before walking slowly towards her. Normally Jett had no issues talking to the beautiful girls in his class or on the street. But now… his legs were shaking and he kept wiping his hand on his pants because they felt clammy.
Come on man pull yourself together! Jett thought as he came to a stop in front of her desk.
“G-good morning… I mean afternoon, Miss, Mako…”Jett said in a slightly nervous tone. He chuckled a bit and scratched the back of his head.
idiot, way to be smooth jackass. he thought to himself.
Mako didn’t really think this odd, though was surprised that the grandson of The Frenchman would be awkward. Then again, he might have been with friends or trying to pick up girls when she very publicly told everyone he’d forgotten his ID Card. Speaking of, she held the card up in her hand, and smiled.
”Good afternoon, Jett. I believe you didn’t pick this up this morning, and you came in over the wall instead of through the entrance.” It didn’t sound like she was chastising, reprimanding or even judging him for that. In fact, she seemed slightly impressed.
Jett flushed even more when she spoke to him. Even more so when she mentioned him jumping over the wall. Did she see him do that personally? He thought he might get in trouble for a stunt like that, but she seemed impressed? Did he just impress miss mako?
He straightened his shoulders and smiled a little more genuine than a nervous one.
“Yeah… sorry bout that.” His speech somewhat improving.
“Didn't want to be late for class… obviously. And going through the gate just looked like a pain. “ He looked at her, God she had a beautiful smile… and here he was just looking like an idiot.
“Didn't mean to add more work for you Miss. Mako. “ ”It’s nothing, really. The rest of my work isn’t going to pile up much if I put it off for a moment. Say, you’re the Frenchman’s grandson, aren’t you? Why didn’t you get in on recommendations?” Mako asked, already knowing the answer. It was the same answer for every second/third generation Hero who chose to apply normally.
Jett nodded,
“I am. Not a lot of people catch that really. Despite us looking alike. My grandfather said he could get me in, but he also taught me the meaning of hard work and the rewards that reap from it as well. I know that through my own efforts I would get a more rewarding Experience as well. And distance myself from his name somewhat. “ But then he finally worked up the courage.
“But one of the main reasons I came to this school… was to meet you Miss. Mako!” He paused for a moment as his skin turned red.
“I've always been a big fan of you since your career… and I was wondering… could I get your autograph?”Mako nodded at the answer he gave. It was the reason she expected. Worded differently, of course, but they all gave the same basic answer in the end. What caught her off guard was the admission that he was a fan and wanted her autograph!
”Oh, sure! I don’t have many fans, especially Heroes, so to meet one is rare indeed. What would you like me to sign? Oh, wait. I have an idea!”She opened her desk, and pulled out her iphone, adorned with a cute panda charm, and a mask. THE mask. Madame Obsidian’s mask, which she put on and finally opened her golden eyes as she leaned over, and lifted the phone high, shouting
”Selfie!” before taking a picture. She took the mask back off and closed her eyes again, smiling.
”I’ll email you that pic later. she chimed. Having a fan had put her in a very good mood.
Jett was elated when she agreed to give him an autograph. As he was searching for something ANYTHING for her to sign...she said she had an Idea. He looked to her as she pulled out her old mask. Putting it on and all Jett could think was
No way… this is too awesome! When she opened her eyes though. His heart skipped a beat, it flatlined when she leaned over next to him to take the selfie. Luckily he had a big smile on his face and looked at the camera in time to hopefully not look like a complete dufus in front of her. She also smelt fantastic…
He was on cloud nine now. He just got a picture with Miss Mako. He couldn’t stop smiling, as he nodded, understanding that he would get the picture later.
“Thank you so much Miss Mako.” He picked up his ID card from her desk, putting it directly into his pocket “I’m glad I forgot it in the first place. Day cant get better than this!” ”Just don’t make a habit of it,” Mako laughed, before tearing a page out of a notebook and signing it, handing that over to Jett as well, but when he went to take it, she grabbed his arm, and her whole tone changed. Her eyes were open once again, but she wasn’t smiling.
”I hope your days of looking up to villains are over, however. This is a Hero school, and those with villainous motives or tendencies will be expelled after two warnings. This isn’t your first warning. This is just me giving you some friendly advice.”She let go of his arm, and smiled again, her eyes close and her voice sweet once more.
”Okay?”He nodded and smiled even more when she offered the paper to him. He nearly jumped out of his skin though as she snatched his arm, opening her eyes, even though they were the same breathtaking golden eyes they had an all new look in them. Her tone much more serious. She gave him her advice for not looking up to villains anymore and it will not be tolerated here.
He gulped, his eyes wide. This was the one who his grandfather mentioned he squared off with. He didn't believe totally, he heard the stories but she had seemed so sweet just a moment ago. Now he was firm in his knowledge that you don't mess with Ms. Mako… with that and let go of his arm. Suddenly changing once again into the sweet smiling Ms. Mako.
Quickly he nodded.
“Yes of course ma’am.” His back straight as if standing wrong was reason for warning. He didn't leave though… incase she wanted to add something.
She went back to her paperwork for a few seconds before looking up at Jett again.
”Hey, don’t let me keep you from being a teenager. Go do stuff, and talk to people. Unless there’s anything else you’d like to ask me.”He thought for a second… he did have one question he was dying to know… as well as the rest of the world.
“Well…. I do have one question. Why did you decide to work at a hero school? I mean I know you said to the press you were turning over a new leaf, and I am glad you did and are now here! But why here? I mean you don't have to answer that if you don't want to of course.” He said while bowing his head slightly.
Mako sat back in her chair and thought.
”I wouldn’t say I decided. Well, I mean technically I did choose to, but it wasn’t part of any long-term plan. After my prison sentence started, I had a lot of time to think, and I realised that in my six month villain career I’d done everything. I’d robbed from the most secure places in the world, and fought countless Heroes in the process, escaping every time. Granted, there’d be new heroes once I got out, but if I started a new crime spree, it would be treading the same ground at best. The disappointing sequel, if you will. I wanted to find new ways to challenge myself. So I decided to use my high school qualifications, and celebrity status, to train to be a secretary. Part of that was admittedly for the shock factor of a Supervillain of my caliber choosing so mundane a career path. That was fun. Anyway, the moment I graduated and started looking for work, this academy actually approached me, and I was given the job on the spot after two interviews, though they kept a very close eye on me in the first year. I think it sweetened the deal that as well as bookkeeping and paperwork, I can actually give students experience and insight into villains; how they think, how they fight, etc.” Jett nodded his head while listening to her. It made sense, mostly... to him. Doing the same thing over again after doing everything can be boring. But she was so talented with her quirk, and all she did now was push papers around he understood the reasoning for the shock factor. Yeah sure it's going to be interesting to hear her point of view on how villains behave, and that she turned over a new leaf by not going back to being a thief was amazing as well. A true step into a better chapter.
“Thanks for indulging me Ms. Mako. I'm glad you decided to do that. I'm sure it's not as exciting as your previous carrier. But a beautiful smile like yours doesn't belong behind bars! “ smiling with a flush on his face.
“If you ever get bored with this, you should try being a hero! I imagine you would be amazing at that as well!””Oh, my,” she grinned, chuckling.
”I hope you don’t grow up to break hearts with a silver tongue like that. As for being a hero,” she waved away with her hand,
”Living selflessly and in the spirit of self-sacrifice would not suit me. I don’t keep it a secret that I don’t feel the slightest bit guilty for anything I’ve done. I’m not a good person by any means, but I can’t deny that there is something gratifying in making other people better instead.”Jett smiled as he scratched the back of his head. He couldn't believe he was actually having a conversation with Ms Mako, Madame Obsidian. And she was saying he had a silver tongue?! He must be dreaming… no she I was just being nice to him. Yeah that had to be it. Even so this day was awesome.
Suddenly he felt someone walk up behind him. Looking back… then up. He saw his grandfather looking… well past him, but he knew he was looking at him.
“Jetty, you shouldn't be bothering Lady Mako while she is trying to work.” He said in a sigh.
Jett winced at his nickname. Not in front of Miss Mako!! Whining silently to himself he nodded. He looked back to Miss Mako and said
“Have a lovely day Miss Mako.””Have a lovely day yourself, Jetty,” she chuckled, before catching Jais’ eye and nodding, her own golden eyes opening slightly. She smirked a little as she did so. Any hope they ever have of seeing eye to eye, Mako always crushed with the attitude she displays around Jais that screams “You can’t arrest me here. I’m a good little girl now. Nyeeh!” She may as well stick her tongue out at him.
Jais looked at Miss Mako’s smug look. She was one of the few that managed to escape him multiple times, which was impressive with his quirk. He would never of course tell her that. He was glad to see she changed her life, but that was always in the back of his head.
Jais smiled and closed his eyes. Bowing his head slightly. He still was going to try and be nice. Besides, embarrassing Jett a little more would be good for him.
“You know Lady Mako, When Jett was 10 he stole a car in hopes of meeting you.” Mako’s response to this was to laugh out loud, before composing himself enough to be able to answer.
”He stole a car? That’s actually impressive, in all seriousness. I couldn’t do that when I was 10. I couldn’t even drive until I was 19. It’s a good job we got him to a Hero school quick because I think he’d make a great villain. Too great. I humbly apologize for inadvertently being a bad influence.”Jais only smiled, she apologised for being a bad influence? Perhaps there was true progress.
“He did, he was a handful during that time… still is. kid has the ability to do anything when he manages to his mind to it. I'm just glad he got it out of his system when he was young. “ He said while looking to her again. She was indeed fun to talk to. He could see why Jett was fascinated with her.
“Also don't worry, I think it was actually good for him, it really helped him find who he really is. If anything you helped him turn into the young man he is today.”
