Location: Law Firm | Interacting With: Randal

Cynthia eagerly welcomed Randal inside of her office. He was a kind man, with bright crow's feet around his eyes. He also had some noticeable lines of stress, ones that all lawyers obtained after enough time on the job. He was actually the owner of the firm, and although he had a lot on his case, he was always pleasant. Shortly after asking her how she was feeling, he took a seat at her desk. She didn't mind of course, a glance at her clock told her she had plenty of time to kill. The day was going by so slowly. She was thankful for this distraction.

Setting down her pen, she leaned back in her desk. Before, she had been rather stiff with Randal, suspecting he was setting her up for failure. It didn't take long for her to realize that his charisma was as natural as it was true, and after only a month at the firm she had gladly calmed down in his presence. "To tell you the truth, Randal, things have been rather...complicated, as of late."

Concern flashed in his aged, grey eyes. He, like all the others at the firm, was informed about why she had taken so much time off. In fact, he had stopped by her home and offered her a gift basket that everyone had pitched in on. "How so, Cynthia?"

Cynthia sighed deeply through her nose, wishing she could spill her secrets. Unfortunately, she could only offer him the doctored tale. So she began her rant, telling him about her recent nightmares and stress. She drew out the conversation, not wanting him to leave. Despite him being her boss, she was lucky enough to know he was trustworthy and she could confide in him.

Cynthia smiled vividly at Gerald, her stomach groaning when he asked her about breakfast. Of course, she had already eaten earlier that morning, but stress brought on unwanted cravings. Strangely, she didn't allow herself time to think about the consequences of stress eating, accepting his proposal with a nod of her head. “That sounds perfect, will you bring me back a cheese danish and a london fog?” She asked, hoping he could find her two favorite cheat items. She knew the aromatic lavender in her tea would help calm her nerves, she had been using it as a relaxant for years. The sugary pastry would probably make her feel sluggish, but she figured she deserved it after everything that had happened.

Gerald nodded, not bothering to put together that it was quite unlike Cynthia to order a cheese danish rather than a cup of fruit or green tea. “Of course, I'll be right back.” Gerald said, sliding the filing cabinet shut and going to exit the room. He hesitated a bit at the threshold of her office, glancing back at her to offer up a sheepish smile. Cynthia knew he was wary about leaving her alone, but she was no child. She gave him a wave, dismissing him and focusing back on her work. The door closed behind him, and she let out a weary sigh, wanting to hug herself. The only thing that kept her sane was knowing that Jason and Janelle were out there, experiencing similar phenomena. She wasn't truly alone, and if the others who were in her dream really existed, she actually had quite the group of friends. They had all shared in the horror last night had brought, and they were all working through it, bit-by-bit.

Cynthia retired back to her office shortly after hanging up on Jason, her head swimming. She sipped eagerly at her tea, which had cooled significantly since she had left it there. She settled back in her chair, an open file taunting her on her desk, and a pen gripped loosely in one hand. She could hardly focus, pressing the pen to the paper at times only to pull back and leave a small dot of ink on the document. In the corner of her office, Gerald was still busy, but she caught him sneaking glances at her from time to time. She attempted to just ignore him, but after a few minutes passed by she found herself increasingly annoyed and curious as to what he had in mind. “Is there something you want to say?” She asked suddenly, alarming him enough to make him jump and shake the filing cabinet.

“No, ma’am, I was just making sure you were okay. People have been saying your headaches are coming back.” Gerald said swiftly, turning to face her with a small amount of redness sweeping over his cheeks.

“I assure you, I’m fine. A lot has been going on in my personal life lately, but things will get better.” She prayed they would, her whole body tense with the thought of things devolving into something much worse. Things could always worsen, but there had to be a silver lining somewhere, she just hadn’t thought of it yet. In seven hours, she figured it would become a bit more clear. Until then, all she had was a cup of tea and a concerned intern to remedy herself.

“Oh, I’m sorry about that.” Gerald said, completely unsure of himself. “Well, if you need me I’d be happy to help.” He was met with a genuine smile from Cynthia, one that expressed true gratitude. She nodded, gesturing for him to get back to work, narrowing in on her own assignments.

“Thanks, Gerald.” She muttered, happy to have someone in her corner.

Cynthia jumped as a tap bounced off of her arm, alerting her to someone's presence. Casually, she spun, ignoring the fact that her nerves had just been fried. She was completely on edge, both from the murder and the more recent event of two specters appearing in her office. It was an unusual day, and she prayed it didn't get any worse. Unfortunately she soon realized it could get worse, because the person who had poked her was Keith, the office flirt. He was moderately attractive, with a blue-grey gaze and naturally bright blonde hair. If she had met him outside of work, she would have been tempted to chat with him, if only to dream of companionship for a while. Luckily, she had become aware of his charismatic ways through water cooler conversations and the gossip of women who had been wronged by him. She brushed her shoulder, swiping away his residue.

"A bit jumpy today, Cynthia?" Keith jested, a charming grin gracing his face. Cynthia smiled politely in return, knowing that though he smiled often, it never quite reached his eyes. His gesture was practiced, likely honed since high school to turn girls into puddles.

"I'm afraid so, it must be all the caffeine. I've been busy as ever. So busy, in fact, that I have no time for coffee with coworkers," She paused, her smile turning apologetic. "Big case."

Keith opened his mouth to speak, but a saving grace in the form of Gerald ran up to them, Cynthia's ringing phone in hand. "Cynthia, your phone is ringing. It's an unknown number but-" Cynthia quickly cut in, thanking him and grabbing the phone out of his hand. She accepted the call, turning her back to Keith and strutting away a few steps for privacy. Eagerly, she waited for the voice she had been expecting, and breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing it. "Yes it is, good to hear from you so soon. I'm a bit swamped right now, but I can take an early break...or, if you're free I get off at five o'clock today."
