Her legs dangled over the crowd of people rushing from Naran's stadium, kicking back and forth. Froakie let out a croak quietly from his frequent perch: Vern's shoulders. His arms were draped over her neck, his legs around her waist, and his little blue head peeked around her head. Froakie and Vern were watching the passersby and eavesdropping on their conversations.
"Did you hear about that Alfonse Frederikton?" "Alfonse? I thought it was Alberto?" "No, no, no it doesn't matter. He went missing, Shirley!" "That's the boy who won, huh?" "Hey, what do you want to eat?" "Brucie, give me that water gun!" "Mom, he just shot me!!" "Tune it out, Froakie." "Have you heard of that Team Noble group?" "Yeah, seems like a real scary bunch of pansies! There is no Team Noble!" "No, no, my friends are saying that they were behind this. They finally came out of the dark!" "Huh? I haven't technically seen any Team Noble members..." "That's because they work in the shadows! I'm telling you, that group is kidnapping Pokemon trainers!" "You're insane, Gil. For all I know, there is no secret group of trainer kidnappers and you're making most of this shit up."
Vern turned her head to Froakie. "Team Noble kidnapping trainers? What do you think?" "Froak, froak!" "I guess we'll have to stay on our toes as usual, then, Froak. Since we need the money, we'll play along until we have enough for ourselves. Really can't trust anyone nowadays. Except you, of course!" She reached over her shoulders, grabbing Froakie in a bear hug. Vern had just gotten out of the mysterious Team Noble recruitment session, but technically, she still did not have the job. The man on the podium told all of the new recruits that their task for now was to lay low until Team Noble needed them, training and building their Pokemon teams (technically just Froakie). Vern reasoned that the best place to go was the great oasis city in the desert, Valencia. There, she would get a set of Pokegear from her friend in the Kosei Underground. After six years, it was finally time to train Froakie to become stronger.
Personality: Quiet, but always listening, Vern is usually the last to speak in a conversation, having thought through every possible response and considering every outcome. Often sticks to the shadows. She is not one for small talk.
Appearance: Slender, with tanned skin. Short, cropped black hair (pixie cut). Does not walk with confidence. Cannot be seen without her signature red and black striped scarf.
Height: 5'8"
History:
Vern has always been in the background. Even since she was little, her father had always been missing from her life, so Vern had to learn early on how to survive in an unforgiving world. She never knew her mother, so she basically raised herself doing whatever was necessary. A life in the shadows was what she had become used to, doing odd jobs and even working for the scum of the Pokemon world. She had extensive experience working through the underworld because that was usually how one got what they wanted. Vern often got the smuggling jobs because no one really noticed her. She could slip into places with contraband, and no one would bat an eye. To them, she was just another helpless orphan girl. On all of her jobs, there was a Froakie that would often lurk on top of buildings watching her. It seemed lonely, and none of the other Pokemon paid it much attention either. Vern always noticed this Froakie because she simply had an eye for those that reminded her of herself.
One rainy day, when she was fourteen, she was delivering smuggled ultra balls to her employer's warehouse when she came across a Froakie that looked battered and beaten. The bubbles that usually adorned its back were missing, and even under the falling rain, this Froakie looked like it was on death's door. It was either the job or this poor Pokemon's life. It was a simple choice. Within an instant, Vern picked up the battered Froakie and carried it back to the abandoned building that she had taken over (and now called home). She immediately brought the local "chop shop" doctor over to her home. Froakie's injuries were treatable; however, the condition where the bubbles were missing from its back was something that the doctor had never heard of or seen before. After treating the poor Pokemon of its immediate wounds and injuries, the doctor, who had always been kind to Vern, stayed with her until the Pokemon had been fully healed.
Two days later, Froakie was walking around perfectly healthy, except for the bubbles which were still missing from its back. Everything had been going well for Vern and Froakie. The two had decided to help each other out after Vern rescued the Pokemon. Suddenly, there was a loud banging on the door! Several raspy voices yelled out that they were here for the ultra balls that Vern never delivered to the warehouse the night that she had saved Froakie. Vern was frozen in fear. This was a local group of thugs that had been sent by Vern's employer to get back what was theirs. There was no way this was ending peacefully. Vern had seen what these men did to people who failed to complete her employer's assigned jobs. Eventually, the door gave way and crashed to the floor. Five of the thugs waltzed into her home with their Pokemon by their sides. Froakie walked up to her and stood in front of the girl. He would not let anyone harm Vern. Before any of the thugs could act, Froakie shot forth a continuous stream of bubbles from his mouth all around the room until all that was left was mist. This thick mist enabled the two to escape from their home once more. Before Vern leapt through the back window with Froakie, she grabbed the bag of smuggled ultra balls. She noticed at that moment that Froakie's bubbles had returned to its back. Vern eventually found a black market trader to sell her smuggled ultra balls to. Six years passed.
Vern and Froakie were now in the town of Naran. That money had given her enough to allow her and Froakie to survive for those six years. However, her cash stack was now running dry. She only had enough to eat for a few more weeks. Sitting on the curb by one of the seedier bars in Naran may have been her saving grace because it was then that a strange man walked past her and dropped a coin into her lap. Upon closer inspection, the coin was engraved with a time and a place. With nothing left to lose at this point, Vern and Froakie went to the spot only to be knocked out from behind! When they woke up, they were in a dimly-lit room with about forty other people and their Pokemon who looked like they were all as down on their luck as Vern and Froakie. The strange man who had dropped a coin into her lap was on a podium now, telling them that there was no need to worry. Everyone had only been knocked out as a measure of secrecy and safety. The man announced that this would all be the start of something new. He simply wanted to offer them all a job. Vern immediately took the offer. Little did she know that she had just joined Team Noble.
