How about our Paladin, Joseph, screwed up in the recent past and he's on a quest to regain his honour. Maybe there's a legendary beast or specific item belonging to your church that needs recovering. Maybe he has a loved one who is I'll and can only be saved by powerful magic.

The important thing is that he desperately needs to acquire this thing or to do this thing.

This is where you depend on your GM to include whatever that thing is.
That works well.
Unless this is for a group this is the wrong forum for pairings.
Wrong forum.
Not particularly; The best inspiration I have is an old D&D campaign I ran that made my players rethink warriors. I set the entire campaign in a city that featured all weapons larger than a knife as illegal.

The players at first whined because most of them didn't like rogues. Then they started to figure it out. The warriors in the city learned to improvise, hiding weapons in plain sight and in a city where weapons were banned, the warrior that sneaked a powerful weapon into a battle ruled the day.

One warrior, for example pretended to be a wood cutter. That let him carry a nasty wicked looking axe across the city in a wagon the early morning so long as he was riding towards the walls. Late at night he could go n the other direction provided he loaded the wagon with the already chopped wood he purchased at the market.
Provided everyone isn't a member of S.T.A.R.S. or are police, retired military or other combative types I may be interested.
That's to be expected. It's not like D&D where you absolutely need to find an "in" for the character right away!

Wait until the proper moment.

Name: Laila the "Nightbringer"
Age: 21
Height: 157cm
Weight: 40kg
Class: Archer
Race: Human
Weapons & Equipment: Bow, Dagger, Throwing Knives
Skills and Abilities: Archery, acrobatics
Bio: Laila was born on the continent of Roh in the Royal City. The daughter of a slave, she was born a slave. The only way out of slavery was to purchase one's freedom but a palace slave had little opportunity in the making of coin. As a result she took to the arenas, barely surviving her first few engagements until she found out she was a fair hand with a bow. After that, she became renowned for her skill. While she would never be as popular as a proper gladiator she did earn the coin she needed to buy her freedom.

After that she became a mercenary, taking training wherever she could. In time she would become known for functioning both as an assassin and as a personal guardsman, guarding against assassination. She never learned the higher arts of assassination but she could be stealthy and get to areas providing vantage.

In time, however, she failed at protecting one of her charges and the extended family was not pleased with their loss. As a result she had to leave and leave in a hurry, taking a ship north to seek out new adventures.

We're over forty. Pokemon hunting is much easier with a car... Which is why I don't bother playing.

What I miss is tabletop role playing during summer vacation. You needed multiple players to take on the role of GM if you want to play eight hours a day.
