"There has to be more to the world than this." Spiritual ◈ Creative ◈ Quiet ◈ Kind ◈ Passionate
Kate is soft-spoken and introverted, but is passionate about art and spirituality and wishes she had more people to talk about such things with. She supports herself doing freelance graphic design work and teaching yoga classes, but her real love is painting. She's self-taught (her parents insisted on her getting a practical degree instead of majoring in art) and doesn't have the connections, credentials, or knack for social media brand-building to turn her art into her day job, but she's sold a few paintings locally, she practices almost every day, and she's proud of her skill.
In her spare time, Kate loves to be out in nature. She's always wishing she could hike and camp more, and on nice days she can usually be found in the arboretum near her apartment, reading in the shade of the trees, painting pictures of the flowers, and walking barefoot in the grass.
Origin ◈ _________________________________________________________
Kate grew up in Wisconsin, but moved to New England to attend Boston University, and stayed in Boston after graduating. Her family didn't have much money, and she often felt alienated from her fellow college students, most of whom came from upper middle class families.
Raised without much religion or spirituality, Kate became a spiritual seeker. She found organized religion alienating, but connected with other spiritual practices such as astrology and yoga. She's heard of the concept of energy healing, and she feels like she's sometimes been able to tap into something like that. It's faint, and she's not sure herself how she does it, but she seems to be able to help the people around her heal, both physically and emotionally, and more than one of them has told her there's just something about her touch.
Throughout her life, Kate has felt like a misfit. Her pragmatic, down-to-earth upbringing didn't provide much of the wonder and beauty she craved, and seeking those things was usually a lonely pursuit. When she went away to college, she met a lot of different kinds of people, but even the artsy ones were career-focused in a way Kate couldn't be even if she wanted to. In the five years since she graduated, she's had to spend far too much of her time hustling up the next gig to keep her rent paid, instead of doing the things that make life worth living. All she wants is to make art, love people, and connect with the transcendent, and it feels to her sometimes like the whole world is set up to make those things hard.
Guardian Magic ◈ _________________________________________________________
◈ 【Magical Gift】
◈ Healing touch ◈
Kate can heal physical and spiritual wounds by putting her hands on someone who is suffering. Early in the story, she will become known as the Hands of Aceso, after the ancient Greek goddess of healing.
◈ 【Limitations and Weaknesses】 The healing process drains Kate severely. While she doesn't suffer an equivalent injury to the one she's healing, she is weakened as much as if she had suffered it. Using her power too much without enough rest in between would kill her (though at the start of the story she hasn't experimented with it enough to understand this).

◈ 【Amanda Hale】【Best Friend】 ♫
Amanda is Kate's best friend from college, an extroverted high achiever who seems to be Kate's polar opposite. But they get along well and trust each other with almost everything. Even as Amanda's career has taken off and they've been able to spend less time together, the relationship is still the most important in Kate's life.
◈ 【Justin Espinoza】【Situationship】 ⚤
Justin is a Boston-based musician whom Kate has an intermittent romantic relationship with. She wishes they could have something more defined and committed, but his band's touring schedule makes that impossible.
◈ 【Julie Lowe】【On-and-off girlfriend】 ⚤
Kate briefly dated Julie in college, and they've broken up and gotten back together many times since. Julie is a beautiful and talented writer, but is acerbic and cruel. When things are good, their relationship feels like a safe, stable place for Kate. When things are bad, Julie's behavior borders on emotionally abusive.
◈ 【William, Sarah, and Andrew Hartnett】【Family】 •இ•
Kate's parents William and Sarah still live in Madison, Wisconsin, as does her brother Andrew. After years of working in auto sales, William now owns a dealership, where Andrew works and plans to take over when his father retires.
When Kate was growing up, her father drank a lot (which is why Kate never drinks), and her mother tended to be controlling and hypercritical. Kate's relationship with her family has improved over the years, but she has always felt that they have more in common with each other than any of them do with her. Since moving to Boston, she only sees them on Christmas. |
