LANTERN (redux)

Golde giggled as her newfound friend squawked and nuzzled her, its combination of soft fur and feathers tickled her. She reached into her bag with one hand to acquire more berries to feed the griffin while the other petted its head. Never in her life will Golde ever dreamed of meeting a mythical creature such as a griffin face to face, much as making it her friend!

"Oh you are very wonderful and majestic indeed! I bet my brother will-", she stopped, her feeling of elation gradually turning into despair. Meeting and befriending the griffin almost replaced the blight of darkness within her. Even if Golde left her family slowly succumbing into madness, the pain and sadness that came with this decision was always in her heart.

The griffin cooed and licked a droplet of tear off of Golde's cheek. She didn't notice she was crying until the griffin did that. She looked at the griffin and almost saw empathy in its eyes, as if it can relate to Golde's pain. Golde sniffled and hugged the griffin as newly formed tears wet the creature's hide while the griffin enveloped its wings around Golde and continued to coo.

"Thaht's uh big cahtch yuh goh' there, Mhissus - shure youh cuhn handle 'im?", Ifor said.

Golde just laughed and released herself from the griffin's embrace to go back rubbing its head while it continued to coo to show its pleasure. "Yes Ifor, I am sure I can handle it. I've handled bigger creatures than this majestic fellow, and they made this griffin look well-mannered!", Golde jokingly replied.

Everything that occurred after that happened in the blink of an eye. A heavy net suddenly dropped from the sky on Golde's griffin friend, trapping it. She yelped in surprise and fell on her bum as she heard the unmistakable sound of plane engines soaring through the night sky. She recovered from the shock and desperately tried to untangle the thrashing griffin from its trap. "Don't worry friend, I won't leave you", she said as she persuaded the griffin to calm down to prevent it from being more entangled with the net. She glanced back at Ifor and Elliot, surprised by the glowing floating obelisk, two children wearing animal hide, and the other griffin. Elliot mouthed both to her and Ifor to get ready as the second griffin flied through the air, evading the falling net, and battled against the other planes. Just then, Ifor scooped up Golde in surprise and ran away, the griffin caught in the net continued to trash and cried.

Golde also trashed and struggled to be free of Ifor's strong arms. "Ifor! What are you doing?! Let me go! We can't just leave them there! Elliot! Elli-", Golde stopped. While she forcibly struggles to be free from Ifor, he accidentally dropped Golde and her head suddenly hit something hard. Her consciousness gradually fades and the last things she saw and heard were the cries of the griffins, one in defiance while one in helplessness, the engines of the planes, a shadowy mass forming and coming from the beach, and Ifor's beefy hands as he lifted her again and ran away.

It was just a normal day at the beach. People of all ages were here, enjoying the cool waves of the sea under the scorching heat of the sun. Children were laughing and building sandcastles, teenagers were playing volleyball, and adults were either relaxing under the shade of their beach umbrella, grilling meat for lunch, or having conversations with one another. All this, the young girl named Mareena had observed from afar.

All that time, she was studying how the humans behaved and interacted with each other, hoping to gain something from them and be able to blend in with them. First of all were the clothes: some loose, skimpy, showing large amounts of skin, or tight suits suitable for swimming. She looked down on her body. She wore a regular looking black swimsuit so she guessed that'll do.

Next were the skin and the hair color, and Mareena was genuinely surprised. It didn't occur to Mareena how similar the humans are to her kind. An Atlantean could easily pass as a human whenever one wants to. Honestly, she didn't even know why she's hiding behind rocks on the far reaches of the beach. From new-girl jitters, perhaps? In any case, if she wanted to live independently from now on, she came to the conclusion that she'll have to do big swims of faith and make do with what she has.

Mareena jumped in place and shook her whole body to fight off the nervousness. She paced around a bit and exhaled a few times before taking in a deep breath and walking confidently towards the humans on the beach, which made her land face-first on the sand with her first step. She grumbled and stood up to further study how the humans walked. "Okay, so right foot first, then left-woah!", Mareena exclaimed as she wobbled a bit. She looked at the humans in alarm and breathed a sigh of relief when they didn't hear her. "You can do this Mareena. Just, concentrate", she said to herself. "Just breathe in, breath out, relax-"

"What language is that?"

Mareena looked back to see a young man sitting on the rocks, watching her. He wore a red tank top and beach shorts. He also had a darker skin complexion that Mareena's because he was tanned. Like her father, the man before her had blond hair but has dark green eyes that seemed to look at her curiously and intensely. Mareena blushed and looked away.

"Oh hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you", the man said. He stood up and approached Mareena. "I'm Jonathan, by the way, but you can call me Jonah", he said with a smile as he reached out his hand.

Mareena glanced a few times at the man before looking at him completely. The man seemed to be the same age as her if not a few years older. Other than that, this man that called himself Jonah was still shrouded in mystery. She looked at his outstretched hand in confusion before putting on her hand atop of his. Jonah looked at her in bewilderment before laughing.

"You're very weird, a good kind of weird in fact", he said while looking at Mareena in amusement. Mareena, on the other hand, continued to look indifferent and confused at him. It took him seconds to realize something. "You don't understand me, do you?".

Mareena coughed before speaking. "Me understands you, but me no good speaking your languages", she said. It took a lot of effort and hand gestures for her to say that sentence and Jonah really saw how obviously Mareena struggled.

"It's okay, I understand completely", Jonah reassured her. "If that's the case, I'll speak more clearly from now on so you can catch up, alright?", to which Mareena nodded. "Awesome! Now let's start over. My name is Jona- hey wait! Where you going?".

Before Jonah was able to continue, Mareena quickly turned to look at the sea behind her and felt the cries of a sea creature calling for help. She quickly dived and swam to the source of the cries where two fishing boats encircle the poor creature in the far reaches of the sea.

Like her kind, Mareena is stronger, tougher, and faster than the average human. She can breathe underwater, swim at speeds no ordinary human can ever achieve, and is immune from deep sea pressures and temperature. She will never get lost in the vastness of the ocean because she can know where she is from the changing ocean currents, temperature, and more. As she is Aquaman's daughter, she has the ability to telepathically communicate with undersea life (including alien aquatic life forms). Like her mother Mera, she has hydrokinesis which is the ability to control water at will.

Weaknesses:
Atlanteans can still be killed in ways that can kill a human. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and being in a very dry place like the desert can kill her. Additionally, her ability to telepathically communicate with aquatic life forms make her very empathic and other aquatic villains might use it against her. An interference in the sonar waves which is mostly caused by boats and other man-made technologies might disrupt her telepathic communication with them.

Skills:
Mareena is an adventurous young girl so she knows her way through the ocean. She is also knowledgeable about the myths and legends regarding the oceans and has made many aquatic friends, because she's just friendly that way. She is very adept at speaking her people's language as she was born and raised in Atlantis. She also inherited her parents' charisma so she can be very persuasive if she wants to.

BRIEF Bio:
Mareena was born at the great kingdom of Atlantis, daughter and second child of its king and queen Aquaman and Mera respectively. Ever since she was a young girl, her people would adore her for being kind and generous as she was a trickster and a prankster, and her smiles may or may not literally light up the dark ocean floor. Nevertheless, she is beloved by everyone. As she is a princess of Atlantis, her father made it upon himself to personally train her to become a skilled warrior in the ways of Atlantis while her mother would help her in controlling her ability to control the very waters they swim. Her favorite thing to do, however, was ride on her favorite hippocampi and explore the vast ocean. Her mother was a bit reluctant as she knows the ocean contains creatures even his husband fears and they might hurt their precious ocean pearl, but her father was sure Mareena's free-spirited and courageous attitude was very important in being a wise and great ruler of their kingdom in the future. Of course, good times don't last.

It happened when she was very young. The orignal Black Manta struck the kingdom with all his might and forces, intent on destroying Atlantis once and for all. The Atlanteans were successful in defeating the forces of Black Manta but the aftermath greatly affected the kingdom. Structures were destroyed, families were broken, and many lives were lost, including her older brother's. The kingdom lamented for weeks but they need to move on in memory of those who were dead. As a result, the king and queen's marriage darkened but their love for each other was rekindled thanks to the efforts of Aquagirl and the other blood related and non-blood related members of the royal family.

Fast forward many years and Mareena has reached the age of adulthood. She however is against being queen not because of falling out of love for her people but because it will mean she will not be as free as she was before. She realized all these practicing on swimming in a regal way, how to formally address her people, and etc. made her feel restricted and trapped. So the night before her debutante ball, she sneaked out of the kingdom to the surface world to escape. She managed to live quietly and secretly these past few months, but the day her family will find and drag her back to the ocean floor will be sooner than she thinks.

Story Arcs:
Princess Duty(solo) = While near the harbor, Mareena heard a distressed call coming from the sea. A group of fishermen with an upgraded water boat managed to catch a rare, endangered species of fish and it's up to Mareena to foil their evil plans and save the day.

Daddy Issues (team up) = With the help of an informant, Aquaman finally found her hiding beneath the skirts of the Titans. He will of course force Mareena to come back to Atlantis with him and it will take all of Mareena's power to convince her father to let her stay at the surface world. And what better way to prove to him that she can live on herself than by stopping the Trench that resurfaced and is now attacking and terrorizing a city?

Game of Thrones (solo, potential team up) = Nereus the First King of Atlantis is intent on taking the kingdom back and ruling the 7 seas once more, and he starts by kidnapping Mareena's mother Mera. Atlantis, however, will not stand idly by while this happens. This is a war that will greatly disrupt the order of the oceans. By the way, what's that gigantic creature behind the First King?
