CAPTAIN THADDEUS ANTARES

New Terra. The crown jewel of human colonization.

As his shuttle descended, Thaddeus couldn't help but be in awe of the magnificent cityscape. In some ways, returning to New Terra was an adventure for the Captain. Technically speaking, the Terran capital was his home, but it felt almost as though his home was everywhere else. Off in the distance. Among the stars.

New Terra was a city under construction. No world had been spared from the carnage of the Terra-Martian War, least of all the Terran capital. When the rebel colonies banded together to form the Martian Legion, New Terra was a major target. Thaddeus could understand why. The disproportionate resources dedicated to New Terra certainly help make the planet a wonder to behold. A true human marvel. But it was unsurprising that more distant colonies harbored resentment.

Thaddeus himself was a builder of sorts, a bridge-maker, helping to forge a bridge between the Terran Republic and Martian Legion. The War had ended ten years ago, but there was still work to be done. Thaddeus was prepared for the next stage of the project. He was prepared for the future. In truth, he was an architect of the future. He always had been.

The veteran Captain made his way through the city towards the central plaza, site of Republic capital building. His destination was near the top floor. As Thaddeus stepped inside an elevator he noticed a Republic ensign already standing there, no doubt running some tedious errand for one of the higher ranking government officers. The ensign was exhausted, but upon seeing Thaddeus he immediately adjusted his posture, standing at sharp attention for the duration of the silent elevator ride.

Rather awkward.

The ensign was relieved when Thaddeus finally arrived on his floor. As the Captain exited the elevator he could see the ensign relax again out of the corner of his eye. Thaddeus reached his destination, the Admiral's office.

"Well I'll be damned. Captain Thaddeus Antares."

The Admiral extended his hand, and Thaddeus accepted. It had been some time.

"'The Negotiator,' that's what some are calling you now. 'The Peace-Maker,' 'The Architect of Tomorrow.'"

"I still prefer Captain," replied Antares.

"I know you do," said the Admiral, as he began rummaging around his desk. "After the treaty was signed they offered you a position in the Terran High Command, but you declined. Something about scientific exploration being more important than politics."

"Something like that. Maybe I knew they'd turn around and give the position to you." Antares laughed. "Admiral Donnelly. Sounds pretty good, though it's lacking that alliterative flair. Perhaps they should've named you Director instead."

"Fuck off Antares."

Donnelly produced two glasses from his desk, along with a half-filled bottle of Irish whiskey. A favorite from their time in the War.

"You really do believe in it, don't you?" asked the Admiral as he began to pour. "The Alliance?"

"I helped found the Alliance Intiative," said Thaddeus. "At this point I'm just trying to protect my own personal reputation."

"I'm serious."

"You've known me long enough to understand my perspective, Donnelly. You served with me in the War. You saw what a nightmare it was. We can't go back to that. We've come too far as a species."

"War is human nature, Thaddeus."

"Curiosity is human nature. Exploration is human nature. Science is human nature."

"Of course. The Antares manifesto."

"The Alliance will help to inspire the scientific discoveries of tomorrow. We can't afford to fight amongst ourselves. We have work to do out there. A lot of fucking work to do. How's that for a manifesto?"

"You have work to do out there, Antares. The USS Hawking is ready to depart. Your tomorrow is almost here. The new Alliance flagship, a unified Starfleet under your vision," the Admiral paused and chose his next words carefully.

"Don't fuck it up."

He handed Antares a glass of whiskey, the Captain was one of the few who could keep up with Donnelly in this particular department.

"I've looked over your recommendations for senior officers. Your bridge crew has been approved."

"I personally vetted the candidates myself. I didn't realize that they were merely recomendations. And that they were subject to your approval, of all people."

"The Terran Republic still maintains some oversight with respect to the Alliance, Captain. And I do, in fact, outrank you. But that was your decision, not mine."

"Well I'm not in the business of making bad decisions, Admiral."

"Your choice of First Officer was rather curious though. Commander Roger River, Martian Legion. Ex-military. A bit rough around the edges. I supposed you meant it as a sign of good faith to our Martian allies that one of their own take on such a high rank. But if I were you, I'd still watch him carefully."

"Let's just say I'm hoping for the best, but prepared for... the alternative."

"I'll drink to that, Captain." Donnelly raised a glass. "And to your good health."

Thaddeus nodded, raising his own glass.

"To the unknown."

Thaddeus tossed back the whiskey in one gulp. He certainly had his fair share of experience from the War, but it had been awhile since then. He had nearly forgotten the burn of Old Terran alcohol.

Nearly.

"Old Terra's finest," said Donnelly, placing down the glass. "Well Antares, the USS Hawking is docked at The Reach, our deep space station. She's undergoing some final touches, but all should be well upon your arrival."

"The space station, or the ship?"

"Both," the Admiral replied. "I've already taken the liberty of notifying your senior officers. The bridge crew will rendezvous with you at The Reach. From there you can depart. Good luck on the frontier, Thaddeus. I know you've been waiting for this."

"I don't need your luck, Admiral. But I'll take another bottle of that Old Terran, should you be willing to part with it."
@Alan Hawke True I have no idea why I said Sloane. To be honest I liked Stoner more if only because Sloane is so similar to Xaone. Your character, your call. I'll just refer to you as Ken haha
@Alan Hawke Lieutenant would be his rank.

@Warborn123 Yeah I meant to bring that up, but glad to see the change made. To be that bald at 30 would be pretty rough...
And with that, our bridge crew has been more-or-less rounded out. ALthough a second character at the Helm could still fit it. For pilot banter purposes.

Once everyone has made the slight adjustments to their CS and posted them all in the CHars tab we'll begin. I'll make the first IC post sometime this weekend. It's THanksgiving here in Canada so I have some family obligations. Very mild obligations, it won't be a problem.
@Hannibal Engineer Hong is accepted. One small change though. It's the Martian Legion not the Martian Federation.

@Alan Hawke Science Officer Sloane is accepted.

@Warborn123 Commander Roger River is going to be our First Officer. It makes sense that a Martian Legion representative would be offered the position, as a sign of good faith in the Alliance. Roger and Thaddeus will also have a good dynamic given that one is a hard edged soldier and the other is an idyllic explorer that resents militarism. Roger being sketpical of the Alliance mission at first makes sense, somebody that violent and militaristic likely wouldn't appreciate the Captain's notion that exploration and discovery can be a means of bridging the divide.

@Gunther We still need somebody at the helm, given Glenn's skillset she's a perfect fit. She'll have to take the rank of LIeutenant since she wouldn't be a ranking bridge officer, but she's welcome abaord. Accepted under those terms.
@Warborn123 This is not literally a Star Trek RP, so feel free to play a character from some kind of warrior alien race, but they can't literally be the Klingons. You can create a new alien race like some of the other players, or be a human for a particularly war-like colony with the same personality.
@Inkarnate I'd definitely agree with this. It seems every wants to be the alien with the gimmick, like the Spock of our crew. But human characetrs are also needed. Your Chief of Security is approved by the way, she's free to take the Lt. Commander rank and double as our Second Officer.

@Alan Hawke@Hannibal Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
CAPTAIN THADDEUS ANTARES

NAME: Thaddeus Antares

SPECIES: Human

AGE: 49

AFFILIATION: Terran Republic

POSITION: Captain of the USS Hawking

SKILLSET:
A born leader, Thaddeus commands respect in seemingly every setting and knows how to effectively motivate his crew. At times his natural presence proves to be rather overwhelming and intimidating. A master negotiator, Captain Antares was among the leaders that brought about the end of the Terra-Martian War, saving countless lives.

PERSONALITY PROFILE:
At heart, Thaddeus is an explorer, fascinated by the mysteries of the universe and driven by the challenge of unravelling them. He is a big picture idealist, believing strongly in the principles of Starfleet and demanding the same level of commitment from every member of his crew. A secular humanist in every sense of the term, Thaddeus views the relentless application of scientific inquiry as our greatest means of confronting adversity. He enjoys reading scientific literature, but also has an interest in "old world" adventure stories, particularly the works of Jules Verne.

HISTORY:
Despite coming from a respected military family, Thaddeus Antares had ambitions far beyond the battlefield. As a brilliant (and somewhat arrogant) academic, Thaddeus quickly made a name for himself in the Terran Republic's Starfleet Academy. His knowledge of interstellar navigation earned him a position aboard one of the Republic's exploratory starships, where he eventually ascended the ranks to captain.

Early in his captaincy, Thaddeus led a rescue mission on one of humanity's most distant colony worlds. He was aided in the mission by Captain Rosalind Williams of the Martian Legion, a gifted explorer and starship captain in her own right. The two captains recklessly fell in love, but the romance was cut short by the outbreak of the Terra-Martian War. Thaddeus had his vessel recalled by the desperate Terran Republic, who had been forced to recommission their exploratory ships as battle ships.

Duty-bound to the Republic, Antares served honorably in battle following the example of his military father. However, as the devastating conflict escalated, and more star systems became involved, it seemed as though the Terra-Martian War would bring about the end of modern humanity. Thaddeus viewed a peaceful resolution as an absolute neccessity in preserving what mankind had accomplished over the last century. As a result, Captain Antares was among the Terran leaders that negotiated the treaty with the Martian Legion, ultimately bringing an end to the destructive war.

Soon after the ceasefire was signed, Thaddeus learned of Rosalind's fate. Her ship had been destroyed in a battle against the Terran Republic, a deadly skirmish somewhere on the other side of the galaxy. As was expected, the captain went down with her ship. Rosalind's death exemplied the cost of war, the cost of a divided humanity.

To honor her legacy, Captain Antares helped found the Alliance Intiative. The Allied Starfleet is an unparalleled collection of scientists and explorers from both the Terran Republic and Martian Legion, working together to push humanity forward into a new age of discovery. Antares believes that our human curioisty, our inate fascination with the unknown, will be a unifiying force for all of mankind.

Anatares has been named captain of the Alliance flagship, the newly minted USS Hawking, where he has assembled an elite crew to begin a new exploratory mission on the edge of known space...

FLAW:
The captain's devotion to the overarching ideals of Starfleet can cause him to lose touch with the daily lives of his crew. Cares less about individuals and more about principles, appearing callous at times. A veteran Starfleet officer and captain, Thaddeus seems almost weighed down by the heavy decisions he has been forced to make, and the consequences of those decisions. Charming and charismatic, but incapable of forming intimate personal relationships due to his past.
