SALSA VERDE

▅▅▅▅austin | ♏︎ | he/him | 28 | vegan

Hi, I’m Salsa Verde, arguably the best salsa and formally known as the writer, Syn. I’m a Wildlife Biologist traveling the country looking to work with the coolest: herps, mammals, birds, and invertebrates I can get my hands on. I also like plants, trees, and fungi specifically. I’ve been writing for about 13 years now and recently decided to get back into it. I enjoy anything from casual to high roleplay, 1x1, and arena. My main genres tend to be anime, SOL, and superhero but I’m really down to participate in anything. And yeah I like all that weeb shit.

A pair of lips here, the twirl of hair there, all pieces of a puzzle still incomplete. The shards of memories scattered all in her mind as she slept and dreamed of better days from before her life was turned on a head. This dream, in particular, was especially vivid as if she were right there living in the moment with her mother again. The young Astrid cracked her bedroom door open only to revel one eye spying on her father and mother’s conversation. She couldn’t hear what they said or make out any of the words from their mouths, it was all just a bit too muffled. When she tried to reach out and call for her mother the space in between just began to stretch and stretch. The harder she tried to close the distance the further away they got. Before she was thrown awake, the silence finally broke, her mother mouthing the words

"She’ll outgrow it, dear. It’s just the age . . .It’s the age when nothing fits."

Gasping as she woke, she looked around her room in a daze, it was still and pristine having not been disturb unlike Astrid. She noticed the alarm first, 7:59 am always the same exact time she’s been waking up recently. Her sheets were soaked in sweat, this would be the fourth time this week she would have to wash them. And then she noticed the TV, she left it on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to help her fall asleep, but the most unsettling part was Rebel Without a Cause was playing. The movie itself isn’t what triggered her, but the line Judy’s mother utters in the film, “She’ll outgrow it, dear. It’s just the age . . .It’s the age when nothing fits." Was she really dreaming, or had she just been fabricating memories?

Whatever it was, it wasn’t normal. The dreams or at this point what she would call nightmares didn’t start occurring until only recently. Her fathers long list of therapists didn’t help but only to further their own narcissism and scribble out doses of medication she didn’t need. Her mind was healthy, but she just had no proof. Flicking off the TV she decided she needed to get out and if she couldn’t get out of Everbrook at least she could get out of her house. These days it was mostly her alone watching over their estate. The quarantine kept her out of school while it kept her father at the funeral home using his crematory on overdrive. That probably wasn’t politically correct of her to think, but her thoughts were her own and none to share.

Checking the mailbox before she left, she sifted through the mail, bills, bills more bills and then boom another return to sender letter meant for Boston University. While her frustration and disappoint was immeasurable it wasn’t anything new. The string of letters not reaching the universities of her choice was getting stale and wearing thin on her already razor thin sanity. Kicking her stand back and revving the throttle of her bike she took off in a tire screeching dash to their family business. A few knocks were meant with no warm welcome, well it was kind of hard to be warm in a business surrounded by cold. She let herself in with her key only to find the first floor completely devoid of any signs of life. Her dad was downstairs working within the morgue.

Still unable to face the morgue on her own she waited just outside of the door leading in.

“You okay Ast?” her fathers voice echoed out.

“…Yeah I’m fine dad.”

“More bad dreams?” there was no hiding her inflections from her dad whether he could see her or not.

“No, just another letter that didn’t get through.”

“I’m sorry hun, but I can’t get through to them either no matter how many times I call. Why don’t you try going to the library and see if they can do anything for you.”

While she welcomed the suggestion, it felt like it was futile no matter what she tried. Despite her better judgement she decided to go anyways since she hadn’t had much else in the way of plans. She touched the cold steel door once more trying to get her words out before shoving them back down and turning to leave.

“Oh and Astrid, be safe okay?”

Her lower lip was sucked into her mouth while her feet stopped short of the stairs. “Thanks, I will. See you at home.”

It wasn’t shortly after her departure from the Funeral Home that she arrived at the library. The lack of traffic and open road gave her a reprieve from her early morning start. The roads were empty, but the library was just the opposite. Bike racks and parking spots were filling up quicker than she expected, had the quarantine lift cause everyone to return their books in a hurry? Making her way to the entrance she noticed a familiar girl with looked like a deformed backpack from edges of countless textbooks pressing against the material. “Ruby isn’t it?”

Name
Astrid Evans

Age
17

Place of Residence
101 Everbrook Circle

Personality Traits
Captain Planet: Much like the anti-pollution 90’s superhero, Astrid is a child both of and for the planet. It might come off as obnoxious or just a phase to most adults, but she tries to leave the smallest carbon footprint that she can. Her behavior lends itself well to varying ecofriendly and animal right agencies and clubs around her.

Chameleon: Astrid is great at blending in with any kind of crowd, she changes her ‘skin’ aka her personality based on what people she interacts with or trying to impress. Her talent for fraud and theatre only help to bolster her eccentric behavior.

For the People: Despite being from a family line surrounded by wealth, the finer things in life never appealed to Astrid if at all. Rather than being caught at a country club or the white-collar version of a séance, Astrid most of the time found herself hanging around Courtland street with those who had nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Lock Box: If there was one flaw that stuck out the most, it was definitely how locked away she kept her actual emotions. With enough rehearsal and the perfect poker face her inner self was practically impregnable from outside hands.

Family History/Backstory
Ever since being born and raised in Everbrook she’s wanted to live elsewhere, now it wasn’t for the lack of trying that she couldn’t get out but moreso a series of unfortunate events. Having been one of the more established names in the quaint town in Maine, there was practically a massive tether attached to mind, body, and soul to young Astrid so she could keep the name and wealth going. All of this was a bit excessive for the developing mind of a young girl, so it was shelved for later down the road. Her parents, like most parents in the area were happily married and dedicated to their heir. Unlike most upper class crust her parents didn’t come with the less scrupulous traits of the haughty rich. Both of them worked for their wealth even having had the family’s wealth as a safety net (it was more akin to a safety castle, but you get the idea) In what did they work you ask? Well they were both morticians and damn good ones at that. The Evans on their own dime had set up their own funeral home in town and slowly gained traction over the years until they made it to the top.

Of course, no parent would want that intermingling with the lives of their children so like everything else it was locked away until she could face it. Little did she know, Astrid would have to face it much sooner rather than later. It wasn’t until middle school than she had found out her mother had developed breast cancer. And despite a three-year long war with the cancer in the end it won out the battle of attrition. The experience of that left a lasting impression on the impressionable Astrid, especially when facing her mom during the wake when the parlor that housed her was the same office, she spent countless hours with her mother and father while they attended their business. Astrid bided her time in Everbrook until it was finally senior year where she thought college would finally be an escape, but tour after tour and letter after letter either got cancelled or returned to sender. The grip of the other side felt like it was tightening its grip around her neck, why couldn’t she just leave?

Other Info

  • The Evans Estate and Wealth originate from a long line of fisherman turned to fish enterprise with the collection, selling, and competing of anything fish related.
  • Astrid works part-time at her parents Funeral Home when she’s not in school. While she doesn’t tend to the bodies she does tend to nicer things like floral arrangements and receiving calls.
  • Astrid drives a Honda XR600 that passed down to her from her father when he first owned it. She prefers two wheels and the vintage look over anything driven around her.
Honestly I never had a study hall in my school. If you weren't taking core classes or electives you just had a free period and most of the time kids left, played handball in the courtyard, or smoked cigs or weed by "smokers gate" (subtle I know).

For all her quirks and aloofness there was still redeemable traits she had developed enough to land her in the throws of Isshin Academy. One of these traits was being able to read peoples expressions and emotions, albeit not perfect at it she was still able to detect when something didn’t feel right. Call it empathetic mimicry or just a sixth sense, either way when she saw her roommate part through the crowd like Moses and the red sea, she was initially quite elated. For one she had never roomed with anyone that wasn’t her stuffed animals and two she had never really had girlfriends or really any friends for that matter besides the younger kids that looked up to her more than anything. The thought of it gave her goosebumps that varnished her skin. Or maybe it wasn’t the thought of rooming together that gave her chicken skin so much as her response to the upperclassmen.

She was probably looking too deep into it, but it did come off as a little too nice and not in the same vein as Haruhi’s overwhelming boisterous attitude. The girl was pretty with her short hair cut and her unique skin, she’d be perfect for an idol group if she wasn’t a hero. Haruhi would just need to find out more about Yoru on their own time, but for now the upperclassmen cat girl was moving them along to the dorms. Separating from the crowd she stopped at the girl’s section while the rest of the crowd moved on to the men’s portion and were all continuing their conversations from last. A strand of hair shot into the sky when she heard Yoru call her name. “Hm!?” was all she could muffle from the surprise invitation, “Oh! Well I think we should settle in now since the others will probably start splitting off too.”

Her eyes shot up to the tops of her eyelids and her lips formed a slight pout as she began to ponder, “I know!” snapping her fingers “Why don’t we have a girl’s night tonight. You know like one of those sleepovers! To tell you the truth I’ve never had one of those. Come on I’ll help you get your bags inside.” Haruhi didn’t have much in the way of luggage whatsoever, just a few articles of clothes and bags of nuts and screws she had stashed away in seemingly impossible areas.

Twitch twitch twitch

Haruhi couldn’t help but stare steadfastly in awe at the subtle movements the cat girls’ ears made with every change in sound surrounding the crowd. Being exposed to such variety of people in one space was enough to drive any sheltered kids’ perception into overdrive. Her hand instinctively raised in defiance ready to rush over and attack the poor girls’ ears with her coddling fingers. Feeling herself drift over as if the girl was made of metal, she dug her heels into the ground and slapped her other hand onto her extended arm trying to push it down back to her side. “Manners remember!” she yelled at herself remembering how bad of a first impression she must have left on squid girl to ask her if the people of Nara had any. While she was getting her urges underway it seemed as though the lavender haired beauty was letting hers run free when calling one of the only boys in 1-A sweaty. A strange way of addressing someone, but Haruhi saw no malicious intent since he was beginning to sweat through his undershirt.

More and more students gathered in the little huddle just in front of the upperclassmen that was ready to give room assignments. She recognized almost all of them either from having spoken to them directly before the speech and the others from her nosey spying during the speech, it was a worrying trend for our moss headed heroine. The unruly foreigner came trudging along with that already patented scowl looking for her roommate who just so happened to be the mighty blob of pink goo. If eyes could turn into rocket ships that’s what anyone would have seen when Haruhi locked her gaze onto the amorphous girl. In that moment she had wish she was her roommate instead, oh the ideas that flew into her head if they were. She could turn her into a basketball and practice her hoops or maybe turn her into a hammock so they could both soak in the sun, unless the sun melted her?

These surnames meant almost nothing to her, so her face of shock stemmed from physical appearances than fame associated with their family names. Especially that massive girl who towered over the rest of them except for maybe the sweat boy in all his sweatiness. That’s when her ears perked up and heard the sound of her name. As if she was a contestant on a game show, she made her way to the center of the group waving and smiling all the way down.

“Yup that’s me! I’m Yano Haruhi but you can call me Haruhi” she said grinning with all teeth and not much else. The question mulled over in her head, her smile quickly turning to a face of deep meditative thought. How would I describe myself? “Hmmm I’d say happy, kind of cold right now but that grandpa didn’t help, and uh a team player? Yeah! I like the sound of that. Oh, and I love it here already! I can’t wait to work with all you! Even you cranky big sis!” she said while pointing at Adrianne. Hopefully her roommate would show up soon and become her best friend.
There was almost no sign left of the monster that attacked them. Kvasir grew impatient and angry when he had nothing to crush under the weight of his foot. His senses were still heightened as he didn’t trust this was all that was left of the beast who challenged him for authority. The words in the background were inaudible to him but not the sound of tendrils smacking the marsh runner’s skull into the ground. Kvasir almost snarled in reaction until his vision was interrupted and forced to cut to underneath him. Blobs similar to that of the creature formed underneath them sprouting tendrils of their own. Had he simply stayed there the tendrils would sure enough pull him into the caustic center.

In one swift action his chest puffed out and the veins from his body expanded through the skin. A deep howl left his lungs before blood shot out from his body in what seemed to be a concession of blades. Tendrils were cut and sliced like pieces of squid. He had to put some distance between him and the blobs and closer to the monster at the center of this. Propelling himself off the goo monster he touched solid earth once more and took off behind it and the marsh runner. Whatever the dog and the red headed woman chose to do was up to them.

Hair suddenly wrapped around her wrist like vines or in Yoshiba’s case tentacles. The thought of slimy suction cups plagued her mind causing her to stick her tongue out with an audible bleh. Her sudden excitement vanished within moments and she just wanted her hand back. ”This must be the girls quirk, I shouldn’t stick my tongue out that’s rude" and as if she was a psychic too Yoshi confronted Haurhi about her manners. “They do! Maybe if we have time, I can tell you all about it what do you say?” she said with her fingers squirming around in the tangled web of hair. “Miz..hu..Yo..shi..hmmm no I don’t like that. I’ll just call you Yoshi-chan you can call me Haruhi” it was at this point she would have on instinct formed a peace sign up to her eye with it closed.

Haruhi ignored the foreigner’s remarks, she was kind of mean and very rude for a foreigner, but her parents did warn her that foreigners were very loud and inconsiderate of their culture anyways. It was just something she would have to help Adrianne correct if she ever wanted to be considered a hero. Before she could continue on there was a sudden chill that ran through her spine as if the whole room had lowered a few centigrade. A bone chilling voice commanded silence which everyone in the audience simply obliged immediately. Who was this guy? And why was he so cold? Haruhi shifted her eyes left and right to see if anyone was as lost as she was, but it didn’t seem like the case. Instead she sank down into her seat clutching her arms trying to prevent the shivers from throwing her into the arms of hypothermia. Man, she was missing the comfort of the Nara heat and the thought of dirty overalls.

His speech carried on and on, maybe he was a history teacher or who knows. She cupped her mouth with a hand asking around in a hushed whisper who he was. People didn’t seem to like that since she was met with shushes and the name snowman for some reason. He didn’t look like a snowman at least he looked more human than anything. As her attention wavered and faded amidst his speech, she turned around in her seat peering over the back rest to see the rest of the entering freshman that may or may have not been joining her class. Her gaze caught the site of a rather tall woman that kind of looked like a boy further back. Why were all the girls so tall?! The more she looked around the more she was intrigued. There was a boy with a white board wrapped around his neck, some kind of monster made out of pink goo and another girl with pretty hair in the color of blue and gold.

She turned around when the old man walked away, and the upperclassmen dispersed clapping in awe of the speech. After hearing someone call for class 1-A she sprinted off to meet her, this was definitely going to be a good first day.

When she didn’t immediately get a response, she knew something was amiss. The peace sign she made with her fingers faded just as quickly as her cheek bursting smile. Her eyes slowly opened and blinked a few times wondering where everyone had gone. Actually no one was there to begin with, and she was just exclaiming to an empty crowd or well almost empty. Everyone else only simply shifted their gaze to meet the toppling marimo headed girl before averting their gaze back to more pressing matter. However, this did not deter Haruhi from trying again, she just needed to try once more with a bit more gusto. Before she could do that however she noticed her bag full of her favorite childhood nuts and screws fell out of her small pouch. Wearing a skirt felt weird and for some godforsaken reason they lacked pockets. Where else was she supposed to keep her snacks for later?!

Anyways in a haphazard huff she quickly swarmed her arms to the ground to accumulate all her precious metals, that was until she realized she had garnered the attention of someone behind her. Quickly jumping to her feet and patting down her skirt of any dust she turned and faced the girl who introduced herself as Adrianne. “Oh, who are you?” Haruhi asked while scratching her head in a puzzled look. Just before the girl could excuse Haruhi from her presence a screw plummeted once more from her grip. Almost as if she willed it, the screw halted before reaching terminal velocity and wound itself upwards traveling up Haruhi’s body before it disappeared into her hair like some sort of insect living inside her, it was weird. “You’re a foreigner ain’t ya? How much did you pay to get in here? I thought Ishin only accepted Japanese students. Anyways nice to meet you! I’m Yano, but you can call me Haruhi or nothing at all if you want”

As jovial as she was it didn’t seem Adrianne shared the mutual feeling. Her smile went limp when she proposed other students like the tentacle haired girl could get in. That’s when she did a double take at that wild blue hair as if it had a mind of its own. Haruhi rushed over in nearly a stampede almost practically throwing herself at the girl just to play with her hair. She was probably overstepping her boundaries and most definitely infiltrating personal space, but for her she didn’t care at all. Her hands ran through Yoshi’s hair in a delicate yet inquisitive way. Careful not to tug or hurt any part of her hair she simply could not resist the thought of having so much hair and so long. After all her head was shorter than almost every girl there.

Definitely shorter than the lavender haired girl next to her spouting off more than Haruhi was, which seemed like feat in and of itself. “You have pretty hair too! I’ve never seen that color in Nara before. Are you okay? You’re talking funny and stuttering your words a lot, wait a minute…. are you a foreigner too?! Wow who knew a girl like me could run into so many foreigners so quickly. What are your guys names? Where you from? Oh, are you excited for the speech I sure hope it’s a good one.” Hopefully the girls around her had more patience than her parents, it was no wonder why she was better off alone in her own little world.
