New roleplay: https://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/189457-the-eye-of-the-needle-where-fantasy-and-sci-fi-collide/ooc

Hey, I'm Catharyn! I joined the Roleplayer Guild on 2nd Feb 2011, then rejoined on the 17th Jan 2014 after Guildfall.

I was active every day until late 2015, accruing (i think) around 7k posts across dozens of roleplays. Then, I started working and had to gradually slow down my RP schedule. In 2017, I officially went on hiatus when other commitments got fully in the way of roleplaying.

This continued until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, when I suddenly realised I had a lot more free time in lockdown! So in mid-2020, I returned to the Guild with a vengeance. I also managed to get The Cradle 1x1 off the ground - a story i've had percolating for almost a decade.

My posting schedule has slowed down a bit now that the world has opened up again. I still love science fiction, fantasy and espionage themes, and generally aim for around 300 words per post.

@Aiyanna welcome back to the Guild! If you enjoy Fantasy & Sci-fi, you may love the new roleplay I've recently set up. Its about the crew of an advanced exploration vessel accidentally hopping dimensions and crashing on a Fantasy world full of magic and chaos. There is heaps of worldbuilding potential, or sci-fi survival antics depending on your character!

Gazes Fondly purred, and appeared to grin.

“Wonderful. Let's get locked in.”

Chitnarit bristled and clacked about, positively furious. There was no way she would let Gazes out of her sight, suit or no suit. “Let's make haste. The beasts will not notice either way.”

While they were talking, the Rothian vessel had dropped through Psi-Helios’ atmosphere. The crew could barely feel anything. It swept high and quiet over one of the planet’s lakes, almost completely camouflaged against the sky. Morgrawalai roots supped at the water and covered the landmass, from the shore up to the mountains behind. Large winged creatures slapped their wings against the water as they hunted for food.

The ship whirred over to a long mountain range with innumerable outcroppings and attempted to land inside a large cave, several times larger than its own profile. Morg roots crept across the roof and walls, their colour changing as they went from outside to inside.
@EliteCommander

A fair point, to save both of us any grief. I was thinking of going with my original idea. And go with a faction/race that are mostly assassins or are skilled in covert ops. I was thinking their whole culture would be based around jesters and or clowns. I'm unsure If they should be knowledgeable in magic, or are more tech focused. But they could be other professions to try and fit into being part of the crew. So my character specifically could be the bartender or maybe part of security.

Hey! Thank you for your interest. As others have said, if you're interested on being on the Jotunheim before it crosses over to Kanth Amerek's dimension, you'll need to be Human and not magic-affiliated. You could be an assassin, but one who has found themselves stowing away on the Jotunheim to avoid being slaughtered on the concourse. I don't know how the jester theme could possibly play here without seeming strange, however.

If you were happy to have no current affiliation with Humans or the Jotunheim, you could create a sect of killer jesters of whatever species you desired. However, it'd need to work within the current geo-political framework we've got. The continent is generally in disarray, but most rulers would not want a cult of assassins anywhere near them, so they'd have to be remote. Unless...one of them made a deal to host your faction in return for not being killed.

Some food for thought. I'd highly recommend you workshop any ideas with @EliteCommander to increase your chances of being accepted!
The Jotunheim Engineering department was mostly contained within one claustrophobic room. There were four main control areas including Life Support, which mostly looked out over a complicated sprawl of wires and pipes that connected the Tamerlane FTL drive in the middle with the three enormous engine pods in back. It was pretty loud, and stank of fuel.

“I can give you 7.25%, no more right now! Should be enough to activate two segments.” Zhao snapped at Vigdis while standing over the engine room’s central console. She wore a dirty navy boiler suit with Tamerlane’s horse archer logo on the back and curlers in her dark hair kept in place by netting. The other engineers had returned to their stations, where they hawkishly monitored engine and life support systems as the ship completed its final pre-flight checks.

“Let us in!” Darnell shouted, pounding on the shuttle bay's airlock door.

Looking frantically around, his eyes landed on the door’s control panel again. “How do I talk through this thing…” He muttered, pressing all the buttons at once.

Ezra kept his assault rifle levelled at a short young woman who he’d caught securing her mech suit to the floor. He knew all too well how dangerous those Javelin bots could be, even when demilitarised, so he didn't plan on letting its pilot out of his sight.

“How do we unlock this door, or talk to the crew?” Ezra asked Eva, his accent thick when speaking in English.
Zey emerged from the airlock with several of her crew into the corridor that ran down the middle of the lower forward deck. It was even loud and more uncomfortable than usual. The lighting was harsh, it smelled of chemicals and freshly fabricated metal. The engine vibrations were more pronounced, and right now there were over thirty civilians crammed into it. Some were milling around, trying to find a way out or place to sit. Others had just plonked themselves down on the boxes of supplies along the walls or the one sofa, chattering worriedly or checked themselves for bullet holes.

Vigdis and Mr Chappel the surveyor contractor stumbled away through the crowd and Zey didn’t have one moment to negotiate her own way through before she heard someone shout "Captain!". She looked and found Duncan Feng addressing her.

"You're intact right?"

“I’m fine!” Zey shouted back over the din, she unclipped an earbud from her communicator and pushed it into one ear.

“Get these people strapped or tied down, we’re leaving!” She patted the Doctor on the shoulder and made to turn toward the bridge when her XO appeared from the crowd, talking about going into orbit. She was relieved to see her second-in-command, though she didn’t show it. Having him on the bridge meant she could focus on not killing every stowaway on board.

Everyone’s voice was getting progressively louder, so Zey leaned in and placed a hand on Mallory’s shoulder so she could shout in his ear. “Negative, it's too risky! We’ll move the Jo to a TGOC ground installation to decant these civilians! Get to the bridge and plot us a flight plan out of here. Fast and low as this fat lady can go! Tell Anselm we need to break this comms blackout and make contact with HQ yesterday, get them to get an escort over here and prepare their site in Iceland or Russia for us. go go go!”

Someone from the bridge wafted into her ear.“Captain, there are two unidentified men with guns in the shuttle bay. I’ve sealed off the airlock. Edwards is still inside.”

Zey immediately spun around and looked through the viewing ports. The airlock was empty, and through the viewing port on the other side she locked eyes with Tyreese Darnell who was hammering on the door from the other side. A bulky soldier in full gear stood behind him, pointing a long gun at someone out of view - Zey presumed it was Eva as she’d have been strapping her mech in.

The man pointed at the lock, then put a sat phone with a floppy antenna to his ear and mimed talking. Zey could feel movement in her legs as the Jotunheim began moving slowly out of the hangar bay.

“They’re shooting at the jets!” Zey heard someone else call over comms.

“Bring our kinetic shielding online, direct it behind us.” The Captain ordered, still staring through the viewing port at Darnell.

Vigdis had to request access to the Engineering airlock twice before a grase-smudged face appeared and studied her at the other end, eventually opening the first door. Once she’d stepped in, the shaven head and face recognisable as Danny Varen, FTL, spotted the gun on her back. After a moment, he opened the second door. He was dressed in black flip flops, navy shorts emblazoned with the Tamerlane logo, and a plate-carrier over his bare tattooed chest. As soon as there was clearance, Danny levelled a black tactical shotgun at her body.

“What’s poppin’ Vigdis? Put the gun down and put your hands up."

Danny looked off to his left. "Search her.”

A second engineer stepped round the corner, shotgun in hand, and went to pat her down.

“Hey! What's going on back there? I need help powering up the shields.” came the stentorian voice of the Jotunheim’s formidable lead engineer, Zhào Jiāyí. Though short in stature, everyone knew this harmless-looking middle aged lady had all of her larger and younger engineers firmly in check.

"Its Vigdis!" Danny called back, not taking his eyes off her.

"Well, stop copping a feel and tell her to get her butt over to the shield console!"

Danny looked a bit sheepish, then cracked a grin.

“Sorry Vigdis. Gotta be safe. Whats happening out there?”

“You’re bleeding!” The teenage boy sitting opposite Fret called out, pointing to the blood on Mr Chappel’s hand.

“Oh my god! Is there a doctor on board?” His mum called through the open conference room doorway.
