Slightly Earlier...

“You still there, youngblood?”

A gruff man’s voice bellowed from Ray’s cellular device. The grown boy shrugged to the question, knowing well the man on the line couldn’t see him. The man on the phone only accepted honesty, and if Ray was honest, he wasn’t sure. Over the past days from his time in the hospital, everything was changing so fast.

Even in the two days since his last encounter with Kim. He was a little taller, it was hot all the time, and there was an incident when he literally crushed his custom PS4 controller in his hands. NBA 2KXX was bad, but it wasn’t that bad. What kind of changes were these? How could he explain them to the man on the phone, whose name he wore?

“Baby Ray!” Raymond barked at his son from over the phone. The voice shook him back to reality and warranted his answer.

“I’m still here, Pop.”

“Then talk to me, man. You know damn well I don’t got the minutes for all that.”

“How the fuck you want me to answer that, Pop?! I got bombed!” X-Ray bit back probably a little harder than he meant to. The burst of emotion almost sent him falling off the edge of the four-stories-high attorney office building that he was sitting on. Oh yeah, because he could fucking CLIMB walls now. But how could his father know that?

They both sighed at the exact same time. “Look, I know I don’t know the full story right now, youngblood. I just wanna make sure my son is still kickin. After all, Our--”

“--family doesn’t run from things.” Ray rolled his eyes a little with a nod at the family saying.

“That’s right…” There was another pause, and Ray rubbed the back of his neck; watching cars drive down on the street below.

“You said you were piecin down in brooklyn. How’s that--”

|”Your call has 30 seconds remaining.”|

“Well...looks like it’s gonna have to wait.”

“Yeah...I was...Gonna go to the memorial thing downtown anyway.”

“Aight. Hold it down, and keep ya head up. For you and ya Momma. I love ya kid.”

“Yeah, I know, Pop. Talk to you later.” Ray finished the conversation, hanging up the phone and staring at it for a bit. It had been a long time since he had heard that voice. Not because he didn’t call...but because he didn’t always answer it. The relationship between Baby Ray and Sugar Ray was a strained one. The reason was....complicated. Whenever the younger talked to his father, the only thing that happened were the recurrence of memories. Memories that Ray didn’t want to relive again.

So, instead of dwelling on that, he moved his thoughts elsewhere. Though, not literally. He was actually right across the road from the Oscorps Tower, simply watching as varying news crews were getting set up. X-Ray wasn’t really a fan of the high and mighties up there in Oscorps, but out of respect for the people that didn’t make it, he made sure to show up. It was ironed into him by the man he just hung up with, to make it early to important meetings. This probably wasn’t what he had in mind, but the habit stuck. He took notice of people gathering and he figured it’d be better if he went to ground level.

So, he got up and put his phone in his pocket. Making sure none of those cameras were pointed in his direction, Ray took to an edge of the roof facing an adjacent alleyway. There was a fire escape, but, instead of taking that, Ray leaned down just slightly out of reach of the thing. Hanging from the ledge by one hand, he looked down. There was a decent drop, and less conscious thinking made him want to test out this wall sticking thing some more. The average person’s senses would scream not to. But Ray was never average.

So down he fell, and as the brick started the mesh together in a blur, Ray took a deep breath in. The idea was to reach out and stick to the wall when he got low enough. The backup plan was to just reach out and grab one of the rails of the fire escape.

A few seconds in though, the fall seemed to be happening a little too fast. He jutted a hand out in front of him. Unfortunately for him, his hand only grazed the wall and only slightly slowed him down. It was something, but as he tried to pull the rest of his body closer, a loose piece of brick broke off leaving him back at a freefall.

Now his heart was pumping, because the ground was only getting closer. He tried for plan b, but found himself out of reach of both the wall and the fire escape. He had to think quick if he didn’t want to be a puddle in this back alley. It’d be a stretch, but he tried it anyway. Aiming his hand upward toward the building he jumped from, he concentrated and a stream of silver silk shot from his wrist. His teeth grit as his eyes drifted down again.

Just as the kid was prepping for the X-Ray on his brand new broken legs, he felt his wrist tug and the line coming from his arm lock. His body stopped from its downward motion, and his back slammed into the wall. Looking up, Ray saw that his on the spot thinking saved his skin. Whatever this stuff was that he shot out was strong...his eyes looked outward to the only opening from the alley. The people of New York, oblivious as always kept walking without even a glance at his plight. Grateful, he sighed in relief.

Glancing back down this time, the distance wasn’t so bad, so, relaxing his arm, the thread was released and he landed on all fours in a cat like position. A cool breath pushed out of his lips as he stood up. Surveying what he just survived, Ray merely shook his head. Seemed that he still had a lot to learn about how this stuff worked...but, enough for that for now. He pulled his hood over his head and walked out among the developing crowd of people with his hands in his pockets. Looked like he was right in time, Osborn’s loaf of bread hair having ass was gonna start talking.

Now...to endure listening to this dude…

Current Time

Kim walked toward the sea of people and then to Ray. Instead of saying hi to Ray, she just says "Boop!" when she poked his cheek. The childhood friend of hers seemed lost in thought amidst all those people. The pang in his brain to announce her presence is what broke his trance, followed by her finger. Ray looked down to Kimi and a corner of his lip turned upward.

"Hey. What's up?"

"Doing good, doing good." Kim say happily while she look around "But I feel great after what I just discovered the other day" she quietly said. Ray casually tuned out whatever Osborn was going on about and took notice of her statement. He was at least glad that she was adjusting to this better than he was, but her discovery made him curious.

"Discovery?" Ray matched her volume, as it clearly wasn't something to talk about amidst a bunch of nosy people.

"Come on, Ray. Follow me." Kim say as she grab Ray hand as they run past the crowd and into the alleyway. Ray chuckled some and followed.

When they finally made it to the alleyway, Kim pick up a empty soda can and place it on the top of a trash can "Ok, remember that glowing power that I have? Well, it turn out that is not my only ability. Check this out." Kim step away from the trash can and stand right next to Ray, her hand mimic a handgun, point at a soda can and then a little blast came out from her finger and hit the soda can, the can fly and fall to the ground.

He leaned against a wall of the alley as she began about her glowing thing, mentioning that she had something else. It honestly made him curious what her abilities would be next. They were clear as day different from his own. Though, he anticipated what it could be, he still found his expression jumping when she blasted the soda can. That right there, was something else.

"Holy shit." He interjected.

"I know right?!" Kim say excitedly and starting to pace around little bit "I wonder what another abilities I have. Can I shoot big blast from my hand? Do I make a big flash from my glowing powers? Can I make neon claws? Can I-" Kim stop on her tracks as a little idea pop in her head.

"Ray...Feel free to think about this but what if we become....superheroes?"

Ray watched on as she started to ramble about it. Clearly she had been thinking hard about all this. Much harder than he initially thought she did. Though, he stood up straighter when she talked about the possibility of becoming a superhero. In retrospect, this all seemed to be something straight out of a comic book for real. That part of it was actually kind of cool to think about initially.

While a lot of people around them did die, they survived the bombing. Not only did they survive, but with no recurring conditions...like disease or a limp. Hell, the doctors didn't even prescribe them any medicine. Then on top of that, they gained these super abilities...Though, the thought of that was kind of getting to him. Keeping it 100, superheroes typically had super problems...Super problems he didn't want for his fam to have to go through.

"I mean, this all does seem kinda cool Kimi...it's only been a few days since we got out of the hospital nd all that type of shit...We should probably figure out more about how all this works first..." Ray managed to put it lightly. Especially with the fiasco from earlier, he didn’t want to go trying to play hero out in these streets. Don’t nobody got time for that.

At least, not right now.
Don't know what I'm getting into, but...

BAMF!

A purple cloud of displaced atmosphere briefly appeared on the outside of that meeting room. Down the hall, a boy of azure skin bounced in his steps as the trumpets blared in his headphones. His eyes closed as he seemed to be simply in his own little world while the music was playing.

Finally! How long was that guy gonna go on for?! It was just school. Or well, maybe different than that. Super school, but, for Dillan, it was just like home really. A bunch of kids like him learning about how to control their powers and use them for good. It actually kinda bummed him out that Miss Kitty and Uncle Bub weren't gonna be his teachers...But his teacher would probably be cool anyway, whoever he was. Honestly, it kind of surprised him that it took the human heroes this long to come up with this idea.

If you asked him, they stole Grandmaster X's idea, but thaaaat was none of his business.

What was actually kinda crazy was that a couple of his friends from the institute were here too! He remembered all the good times they spent together. Ah the memories....that didn't exist yet. It wasn't exactly his core group of buddies that were here, but he at least saw some of them around the institute back then. Though, it'd be totally cool to meet them. After all, even though a lot had changed, not everbody liked mutants...especially if they looked like him...So, he'd need victims friends here he could go bother. Hopefully they were in his class! Though, thinking of that reminded him...didn't he say something about a keycard?

His eyes opened and he patted his khaki pant pockets, then his jacket pockets...Where was it...wait. His tail didn't quite feel right, so he brought the end of it up to eye-view. Believe it or not, there it was! Looking at it a little closer though, he noticed the dormitory said 1-D. Like the boy band? He shook his head of the horror. Like a flashback, the song repeated forever in his head...You don't kno-o-ow-- Wait, he didn't know. The "one does not simply" guy said something about bunk beds...he was sharing a room with someone? He never had to back at home....Crap. Well, he could at least beat them there and get the good side.

Just imagine a boring hallway, his name on one of the walls...and...

BAMF!

Just like that, he was just outside of the door to his room. Though, the name on the front next to his own confused him a little bit. "Kino....Meecheeruu?" Dill said it out loud to try the pronounciation...Wait, Me-Cheer-You was roomed with him? He remembered her, she was cool! She had tattoos like the markings on his skin kind of. Though...he was roomed with a girl. That was a thing? He thought only guys could room with other guys. Or did they mistake him for a girl somehow? He looked back down at his keycard, and the door. They said his name on both. This sounded like an anime...

Whatever, it couldn't be that bad. Though, something caught the corner of his eye all the way down the hall. In a slightly bigger room down there, his eyes widened on what he saw. Was that a vending machine?! BAMF! He was just as quickly in front of it, staring at all the snacks in it, eyes glazed and nearly drooling. His eyes surveyed around him to not see anyone. Perfect. No one would see, in which case...he dug a hand in his pocket and pulled out a dollar and let the machine eat it.

A digit punched in the digits E4, and to his convenience, the spiral within at the coordinates released one of packaged food items. His tail went to the flap that contained it and pulled the snack out. Short work of the wrapper later and he bit into it. A sharp-toothed grin slid to his lips. Aaaah....Hunybuns. BAMF!

Now on the inside of his room, he looked around at the basic furnishings. Looked pretty good, like a new hotel room nd stuff and there was even a bathroom on the inside of it too. He set down his bookbag in one corner. Now to get his stuff...What, you thought he brought a bag for that? Of course not! If he timed this right, he should be able to get his stuff from home in here no problem.

But, like Hank said, he had to keep his priorities in order when he came her. So, before leaving to grab his things, he made sure to push his new vending machine into the corner where there was an open outlet, and plugged it in. There, perfect.~

BAMF!

Here I am thinking I posted this already. Smh...

I feel like I have a character that could be like a big brother sort of figure for the Ranger squad. (More so in attitude/role than actual age.)

Kinda like Paul/Jesus from the Walking Dead. Just less preachy.

Ms. A watched as her daughter awkwardly walk out of the door. "My, my, she is still shy around people." Kim mom said. "So Raymond, how is your mother?"

Ray gave her question some thought and his eyes lowered a little. "She's off workin tonight. Landlord raised the rent some this month because of some repairs that had to be done to our place. We had a sorta wall corrosion problem..." He said that last bit with a somewhat uncomfortable rolling of his shoulders.

Those words were an understatement for the crazy shit he was going through lately. It wasn't like this before the crazy college crop dusting incident that left him and Kim hospitalized a while ago. It really started to set in that it really messed up his DNA. Especially with these damn holes in his wrists that had only recently stopped with all the leaking. Despite that though, he kept his forearms covered with a cerulean long sleeve shirt, with bandanas wrapped inside each over the holes. Wouldn't be a good look if those started dripping when around the girls.

Separating those thoughts from the nice moment he was having with his other fam, he elaborated on his thought: "We wanna move soon, but it ain't in the cards for us right now. Otherwise, she'd have probably been here." The young man explained, spinning a fork between his fingers.

Kim mom eyebrows saddened. "Well, if you and mother want help with the problem, me and Kim be glad to help" she says with a warm smile.

Ray just kinda nodded off Ms. A's offer. Knowing his mom, her pride wouldn't bring her to let them help even if they could. Honestly, Ray felt like he probably had to just figure this out on his own. Couldn't tell his mom, she'd want him to go to the doctor’s. Doctors led to scientists, Scientists led to the Feds, and the Feds never led to anything good.

He was going to change the subject, but a sharp pin hit the back of his head. This was immediately followed by small explosion outside that made the lights flicker a couple times. The lurch in his system made his muscles tense. Ray learned fast that one of those bandanas weren't tied tight enough when he looked at the sleeve of his shirt and it looked like a hole was burned through it. Shit.

What in the name of Grandad’s Ghost was that?

"Oh ang bait ko, what in the world was that?" After Kim mom say that, Suzy barge in through the door. "Suzy? What happened? Wait, Where's Kim?"

"I-I don't know, we were just talking and then the neon sign blew up, Kim flash a flashlight to my face and run off. I couldn't see where she was going" Suzy say in a worried tone.

There wasn't too long for an answer to walk in the front doors of the establishment. While other customers were clearly distressed, none were as much as Suzy when she made her way back in. Ray's thoughts immediately jumped to the worst when he didn't see Kim following right behind. The ebony girl's explanation of the situation was more than enough. Ray got up quick and his eyes found contact with Ms. A.

"I'm gonna go find her, Ma. Try her phone. Show me where she was, Suz.”

Ray made it about a solid block over before he noticed something strange in one alleyway. As much as he had to walk and ride through these streets, there were few that knew this city like him. There was a light coming from the shadows, like a flashlight. Glowing alleys weren't a thing; The homeless folks didn’t typically have cell phones. Sure, there'd be occasional lights of a garbage fire in the winter, but something was off here.

A strange and sharp sensation to his forehead in that general direction confirmed his suspicions. It was odd to figure, but ever since the incident, whenever he was around Kim, he got this...headache like feeling. Hard to describe but it was something like a weird kind of bond...But, deciphering that Sci-fi shit came in second to the task at hand.

"Kimi? That you?" His voice echoed down the between buildings space as he approached.

Kim face was cover by her arms and knees as she shines the attire alleyway with her blue light as she silently cry. She just need someone, anyone, to help. Help her for finding out what wrong with her. Kim head look up to see who call her name, it was Ray. As soon as she see him, she put on her hoodie to hide her face and turn away from him "N-No! Go away...Just leave me alone, Ray...."

The one who neared in question was confused by the sight he was beholding. So, it wasn't the flashlight or Kim's phone that was doing the glowing. It was Kim herself? The fuck? Well, it looked like he wasn't the only one experiencing strange effects after the gas bomb. When she turned away, Ray was quiet for a bit in thought, but instead of walking off, he stayed. He sat on the ground after making sure move any trash and other minor debris.

"Kim. Are you hurt? What happened?" His voice mellowed out, in a sort of warm coaxing manner. He used to only speak this way to Cello when he had his moments, but, whatever was going on seemed to be very stressful for her.

"I...I-I-I don't kn-know...." Kim choke up "W-We just talking a-and then that n-neon sign blew up and I starting to g-g-glow again. See?" Kim pull down her hoodie to reveal that she is indeed glowing "I-it happened at the hospital t-too..." she finally admit "A-A-And..." Kim try to say something but her voice keep on choking up from sadness.

"I-I don't know what wrong with me, Ray. I just don't feel normal anymore, I feel like a freak" she say as she feels tears falling from her eyes.

Ray kept as calm as could be as she told him what went down. So, the sign just blew up while she and Suzy were talking? The fuck kind of shit was that? Another thought sidelined because the brightness punched his eyes in the face before they could fully adjust. Shit, she really was glowing, even more than he previously thought.

Okay, so it was clear that whatever was going on in that explosion changed her too. So, this was what happened to people who lived? Ray didn't glow though, and he was pretty sure that didn't happen to him in the hospital. Maybe it just had different effects on different people. He was sure there were other people that survived aside from them, he wondered what happened to them. He placed a hand on Kim's shoulder as an offering of comfort.

"I think it's got something to do with the gas, Kimi. I don't know what the hell's going on either...but, just know you're not alone. Some really...weird stuff's been happening with me too." Ray broke his thoughts down to her, raising his burned shirt sleeve where she could see it.

Though, feeling like words weren't enough, he extended his free hand toward a garbage can. It took only a second after he clenched his fist for the muscle to tense up. Right after and out of the opening on his wrist, a silver tinge of thread fled from his forearm. It made contact with the metal dumpster, and in turn, it started making a small sizzling sound.

Kim expression was full on surprise, she guess she not the only one after all, she watch as metal dumpster starting to making sizzling sound. The glow starting to fade slowly "Do...do you think there people like us?"

Ray waited a second and relaxed his hand. With the flexing motion done, the thread unlatched from his arm, and he used the bandana on the other hand to wipe around the area. He had figured out that he could control it just yesterday. One of those issues he told Ms. A about.

It was all about finding a way to relax, that was able to make him stop, and that seemed to be the way Kim's lights worked kinda too. At least the distraction got her to turn it off inwardly. Slinging the hand that was on her shoulder to the other one, he pulled her into a half hug from the side.

"I dunno about all that yet, but I'm sure we'll figure it out soon...just...Keep this on the low for now tho." Ray suggested.

"Ok, I just want to go home right now cause I'm pretty sure I embarrass myself in front of Suzy" Kim half jokingly say as she wipe the tears off her face

Ray chuckled. "Nah, You totally did. You were like:" Ray put his hands up to his face and smushed it up to look like Kim's in the picture of the three of them in the parking lot. They laughed a little. "But I bet you Suzy didn't even notice, so don't worry about it." He mashed her hair with a smile before checking his phone when it buzzed.
It was Ms. A.

Ms. A: Ray, did you find Kim???

Yeah Ma, she's fine. The sign blowing up freaked her out. The incident made her a little jumpy. I'll walk her home…
